@@lylarubenstein5661 besides the fact that the musical is fabricated and lin manuel miranda changed many facts to have his own story. the history was nothing but a weak foundation.
I’ve been to Pompeii, seen some of the body casts. I saw one of a chained dog that died trying to run away and looked like it had choked to death on its leash and the ash must've suffocated it, I saw a man curled around his child in a fetal position, There was a man laying face up with all his limbs in the air, and one guy who was clawing at his throat. Made me cry.
I just recently visited Italy for a school trip, and we went to Pompeii, and I promise guys, there is no better feeling than walking down the streets of Pompeii listening to Pompeii
Did you see the grooves in the road where people would pull up in chariots for a bowl of soup? I’ll never forget seeing that the first time and realizing how close we are to those people and how little humans have changed
Just some cool facts about the lyrics in relevance to the actual event: “If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all”- This is referring to the black smog and ash the volcano brought over the town. It was almost impossible to see with your eyes open so it wasn’t much different from having your eyes closed. “Where do we begin? The rubble or our sins?”- Many people in the town thought the volcano was erupting as a punishment for any sins they had committed. “Does it almost feel like you been here before?/In your pose as the dust settles around us.”- The eruption consumed the city so quickly that many of the people were buried stuck in the same position they were in right before they died. As mentioned a few comments below, the “Eheu” throughout isn’t just a noise. It actually means “Oh dear” in Latin.
I think the part about sinning is because Pompeii was very sex-crazed, and would paint paintings of naked children and having sex with animals and children as well, but I’m not very sure
The Pompeii Volcano erupted in 79AD "I was reading a book that had some picture of the people who got caught up in the volcanic eruption. And it’s just such a kind of dark powerful image, and it got me thinking about how boring it must have been emotionally after the event. To be sort of stuck in that same position for hundreds and hundreds of years. So, the song is sort of an imaginary conversation between these two people who are stuck next to each other in their sort of tragic death pose." Great Song
In my opinion the song refers to the feeling of having lived that experience .. I have seen places that I had dreamed of and that I felt familiar. I also believe there is an allegory of the volcano as a purifying angel of impiety
I miss hearing this on the radio in the backseat of the car at night, and letting myself drift off to sleep when I was nine, as my older sister drove us home...

I’ve been so depressed recently and haven’t smiled or laughed in ages. I would just like to say thank u to everyone in these comments. U guys have given me life. God bless u 💗
I’m writing a story about Pompeii, and listened to this and started c r y i n g 😭 I can’t even imagine those last few moments. Especially for those who died-but those who lived, who fled, looking back on their home being destroyed, knowing it was the last time they would ever see their home, their pet, the business that had been in their family for generations-and their families themselves. Imagine the people displaced by that and how drastically their lives would be changed. Jesus. It’s so hard to humanize this event because of how long ago it happened, but once you do it tears through you.
For those wondering what the deeper meaning of this song is, he’s talking about the city Pompeii, that was destroyed by a volcano. “The walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love” means that he was thinking of Pompeii walls crushing down due to the volcano. “But if you close your eyes” meaning he’s imagining a happier time, as the volcano erupts and he’s waiting for death. “I was left to my own devices” meaning that life in Pompeii was not very exciting, and everyone was left to their own things. “Great clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above” meaning the volcanic ash that cover Pompeii. With all this new information, you can truly enjoy the song and understand what’s happening
@@redisgreatYT seeing the same comment repeated 1000 times by people who think they’re being smart by knowing the meaning of a song which the meaning has been told 1000 times before kinda pisses you off when you see that one comment stating the obvious: The song called Pompeii is about Pompeii.

This song lyrics and melody are genius, it has this slow and fast pace with strong lyrics but with a calmed voice, and when it comes down to "But if you close your eyes, it feels like *nothing* changed at all" it's a metaphorical way to say "Everything's falling apart, but it's ok for now", it makes you see the really bad side as it makes you see a bit of the good side, like "there's always something good in something bad"
@@ystarlight6667 you've been through something these past few days or something? Don't cry, hard moments comes from time to time, everyone deals with something
apparently hes actually talking about how he was terrified of what happened at pompeii. they ignored the signs of the volcano and ended up getting fossilized. whatever they were doing, good or bad, was forever fossilized in a pose. he said he feels like his life goes into stasis sometimes too, and is terrified if he were to be forever fossilized doing what hes doing right now. but even if he was fossilized, he wont feel any different, because nothing changed at all.

@@ironfails2978 I think it's a reference to a girl who was caught in a mudslide after a volcano and had her legs trapped under some concrete. In a photograph taken before she died a combination of toxins in the water getting into her eyes and burst blood vessels in her eyes made them appear black
Btw, when it says "in our poses, as dust settles around us." That means that when the ash from the volcano came down to the city of Pompeii, it covered the people of the city and the last pose they were in, they stayed in. Some are still in that position today, still covered in ash. I think that is very sad, and that's why I almost started crying. This song makes me remember my times with my cousins, uncles, and aunts living in Hawaii. We unfortunately had to move to Florida due to my Dad being in the military. During this time, one of my aunts passed away due to cancer. My family in Hawaii never saw each other and didn’t do family gatherings anymore, until we came back. When I hear this song, my whole life just flashes in my eyes and makes me feel many different emotions at once. (Sorry if this was long)
No one seems to be talking about the meaning of this song that Pompeii is actually an imagined conversation between two charred corpses reflecting on the city.
While taking latin in highschool, my teacher had us read a story about this family who lived in pompeii. It was a nice, cute story that taught us the language while letting us get attached to the characters. On the final days of the class, the story ended with the volcano erupting, and everyone in the family besides the older brother died. My teacher played this song at the beginning of class, was crazy.
I think with his accent he's from the area of pompeii, and that got destroyed by a Volcano. "And the walls kept tumbling down on the city that we love"
If y’all don’t know what Pompeii it is a huge city back in 79 a.d in Roman, now in southern Italy, a huge volcano named Mount Vesuvius, still a volcano, erupted and buried Pompeii and a farmer rediscovered it in 1748 and ever since scientist have been studying the volcano and city ever since. The volcano erupted 30 times after the huge eruption.
@@trisyaristinurshadrina8157 well yea that would make sense. They have to get the samples to know how it happened and they would also clean out everything from the ash so you could walk through it
I never knew what this song was about, just really enjoyed listening. Then, a few years ago, my love of ancient history documentaries brought me to one on Pompeii. It was touching. Some months later this song happened to be playing and the lyrics clicked in my head and brought goosebumps to my skin. Coolest discovery I made that year.
Today's pagan is no different. Obsessed with trying to pick up the rubbleb of civilization instead of repenting of the sins that caused the collapse. It almost feels like nothing changed at all.
I was in history class and learned what it was about and I kind of makes this song feel sad like it never did before this song is still amazing and always popping up on my mom's playlist
@@horrificpleasantry9474 it is potential that picking up the rubble leads us to what we did wrong, as those who learn history are doomed to repeat it mindlessly repenting for sins like that is like apologising when you dont know what you did, so picking apart rubble for signs of life may very well be our understanding and acklowledgement of our wrongdoings

Now I’m crying 😢
The beauty of the novels it's the fact you can talk about every epoque, because human feelings are the same in every time

Yes sirrrr
You can tell he’s talking about Pompeii from the fact the song is called Pompeii. Thank you once again, Cpt Obvious

@a dont make me cry...
No no, it's not just a song. It's a MASTERPIECE.
Well dats a mouthful

apparently hes actually talking about how he was terrified of what happened at pompeii. they ignored the signs of the volcano and ended up getting fossilized. whatever they were doing, good or bad, was forever fossilized in a pose. he said he feels like his life goes into stasis sometimes too, and is terrified if he were to be forever fossilized doing what hes doing right now. but even if he was fossilized, he wont feel any different, because nothing changed at all.
