Not that anything matters but I’m a 37 year old straight black dude from Florida with 18 and 16 year old kids who I would hope enjoy content like yours; just wanted to say, keep it going bro! 💪
I have a professor who recently worked on a project with Netflix that wound up falling through. He has been in the industry for literal decades, and according to him, he’s never seen anyone waste more money than Netflix.
Piracy is justified if its the only way to consume something you love. Why should we allow companies and individuals dictate when a product that was previously available for the general public is or not available to the general public?
It's honestly telling that after watching Blue Eye Samurai my next thought after "this show goes hard" was "they better not cancel this". I'm still salty after Inside Job, among... countless others.
I'm still bitter about GLOW. The fourth series was literally the final one, and it was greenlit, but because of Covid instead of shelving it till later Netflix just killed it.
I didn’t watch Kaos because I was still reeling from the cancellation of the incredible Dead Boy Detectives and I was nervous to get invested in anything new. This lack of faith in stories continuing is starting to have an impact on uptake of new shows. I’m watching something and already afraid it’s going to be gone after 8 episodes. It’s really destroying enjoyment. Also you can imagine the result of expecting mainstream numbers on shows that have queer themes and characters…
the wild part is that it was in the top 10 for the month of release yet they still cancelled it. Idk what more Netflix could expect. They cancelled Kaos while it was still in the top spot for release.
I kinda hated Kaos, because I can't deal with characters doing despicable acts and totally getting away with it. But that's also the reason why I ended up seeing all 8 episodes, to see the promised justice at the end, only for the show just reaching the halfway point and then being canceled. Like, I disliked the show and even I am disappointed it didn't get a second season.
I never watched Kaos because I gave up after they cancelled Santa Clarita Diet in 2019. The reason given at the time was that if doesn't win awards you can't advertise it to bring in new subscribers, and it will get cancelled. Not just awards but certain awards like an Emmy.
Yeah the advertising did them dirty. “Hey ya wanna watch a bunch of old movie stars from yesteryear pretend to be the Roman gods?” Nah. Can’t say I do.
How can it be in top 10 and not get a lot of views remind sof everyone saying no one watched the Acoltye but when the numbers came out it was the 5th most watched show of the entire year
Even when Netflix has a good show that is shown respect, they still badly mishandle it. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. A fantastic show that they rushed out all the episodes within a few months of each other and rarely, if ever, acknowledge it today.
You're the ONLY other person I've seen mention that show. I LOOOOVED Kipo and I was so sad to find almost no community for it since I found it a while after it came out
@@FTZPLTC Oooh that cancellation made me want to fight someone! I had listened to some of the podcast before, and I was excited to see it brought to the screen. I wish these shows could at least get a 2 season minimum before being considered for cancellation.
As a lifelong lover of film I used to be the biggest proponent of seeing films in the theater but that changed a few years ago (pre pandemic but that was the nail in the coffin). My top 3 reasons for that: 1) Prices. The price to see a movie in my area skyrocketed making it so much harder to afford (and those movie club theaters are over an hour away from me so that’s not a viable option); 2) Quality. I won’t say movies aren’t as good, it’s just that with the price increases my expectations increase as well and they’re just not lining up and 3) People. In the last 6-7 years the movie going experience is a nightmare. I either sit next to the carrier of the plague who sucks up snot all movie or the couple that needs to have a relationship squabble in the middle of the movie. So that led me to Netflix which USED to be a haven for someone like me. But then they changed their prices, introduced the commercial era (which wasn’t to bad until I found out there were still movies and shows behind a paywall); and then the abrupt cancellation of shows for arbitrary reasons. It’s so frustrating because now there are less and less places to turn to for entertainment. You hit the nail on the head when you referenced Seinfeld. There are so many amazing shows that had weak first seasons, retooled the show and came back and were bangers. Netflix doesn’t allow for that and you lose a lot of hidden gems that way.
You can't say price because you can literally pay like 15 or 20 dollars for unlimited movies every month the money yu spent on subscription you could have used at the theatre
@@ashleybanks-wm4cg I can say price because a monthly subscription for unlimited movies does not equal the same price for 1 movie. From a cost perspective there is no comparison. You’re trying to compare unlimited use to a one time view. Thats apples to oranges.
@@AuntieTaco see you need to get with the times I'm saying Movie theaters have a membership now That you pay $20 or $15 and get to go to as many movies as you want like I said you can't say price it's the same thing as subscription model it's not a one time view
@ And see you need to read my full comment. The closest theater with that option is over an hour away so it’s not a viable option. Therefore if you want to be insulting you should be sure to gather all the facts.
The solution to all this is ending capitalism. Having a system that incentivizes making increasing profits year after year is unsustainable for anything, but especially for art.
As much as I love a good capitalism bashing session, this is not technically accurate. The problem is CORPORATE capitalism. Without corporations, the goal was for an individual private business to make money to keep making the things. But corporate capitalism has said those businesses now must make INCREASING profits every few months forever, or else the shareholder/owners will leave or sue. Under the corporate model, the audience isn’t the end user but the product itself. Creativity only exists to try and feed more users to shareholders. That’s all that matters now. But the problem is the underlying model or corporations is busted. You can’t have infinite growth, or infinite profit increases. It’s literally impossible and so eventually corporations have to start cannibalizing the thing they get involved with.
Ok, what are you going to replace capitalism with? You wanna abolish the system yet are unable to provide a alternative or how we would achieve that alternative
@@chaserseven2886Capitalism is just one economic system of many possibilities. Other systems are being used around the world. I think sitting closer to the opposite of capitalism: socialism, is preferable. The steps to get there would be to add new policies that cause companies to become publicly owned, instead of privately owned. As a publicly owned entity you avoid the pitfall where their main use is to make a select few individuals rich. Another thing you'd want to do is design a plan for distributing created goods amongst the people, instead of putting the product on the free market.
Wont happen, what could happen is change and regulite the type of capitalism, potentially, thats whats actually possible. Like socialism stuff existing is pragmatic as much as helping people as kinda make them better participants in the economy. Its good, its just, also pragmatic for capitalism why they are as much as they are. Whats realisticly in the near future is change it to be less dehumanizing if.
And pirate everything that's not available physically. Pirating things that were never given physical releases is saving media that would have been lost forever.
This too. I buy DVDs because sometimes you can't find a thing streaming, or it goes on and on different streaming services, etc. The rights issues can cause this to be a nightmare for certain movies and shows. Also, special features on DVDs make it worth it for me. And no commercials.
@@ConWolfDoubleO7 In my case it's that the latest laptops don't even have anything to play physical media on - I have boxsets of DVDs which I can't even play anymore. So it's piracy yoho for me.
Never fall in love with anything on Netflix because they are just going to break your heart when they cancel it on a cliffhanger. I mostly stick to shows that finished somewhere else and Netflix picked up the rights to stream it. They have really discouraged me from giving new Netflix exclusive shows a chance.
Something else that bothers me of Netflix is not only how they kill shows/movies, but how also they never bother to announce them as well and dear god it's even worse when it comes to animation in Netflix, like some shows seems to have a lot of love from Netlifx but the rest? They either end WAY too soon or worse they are on limbo since nobody knows if the show is even alive, still hurt we will never see a third season of Glitch Techs
Especially when they put the entire season immediately (Recent Lara Croft animated show). They really expect people to binche watching and then expect immediate popularity even when there is no time fandoms to form.
God, at least one of my favorite shows that was on Netflix is on that limbo stage right now. It's been literally 2 years since The Cuphead Show aired on Netflix and we have no word on if a second season is even happening at this point, and no one is allowed to say anything. Netflix, this is literally how fandoms _die_
Right? They put out a great show without bothering to promote it, then when no one watches it, they cancel it. Like, maybe more people would've watched Kaos if they knew it even existed
How do you envision a socialist communist state to produce art on a broad spectrum, while entertaining most people? Is Oblast Saint Washingtonburg supposed to commission the next "Terrifier" movie? Do you think Disney would exist today, if it wasn't for capitalism? I'm not saying Disney is a "good" company, but to say that Capitalism is killing Art, while creating companies like Disney, is nonsensical.
In some ways I get it I’m sure it was expensive and niche But at the same time surely most of the cost was up front and once puppets and sets were built would plummet
Not Netflix, but Hazbin Hotel’s first season had to be rushed due to fear of cancellation. They crammed so much into 8 episodes to have a satisfying conclusion just in case. It got renewed for another season, so hopefully that won’t be rushed, but it’s a shame that streaming services are forcing artists to condense their art to keep people’s attention spans instead of making a satisfying show
Considering the other show Vivziepop did, Helluva Boss, I am sceptical of Hazbin hotel having a good first season even if the fear of cancellation was removed.
I've had Netflix for 12 years and cancelled this year. After all of my favorite shows got either cancelled (1899, Dead Boy Detectives, Dark Crystal...and a number of others over the years) or mismanaged to the point of un-watchability (The Witcher) I got fed up.
Losing The OA still kills me. And apparently it was right around the time Netflix pivoted from taking chances on creators to just pushing cheaply made content to grow subscribers.
It's so frustrating because I was actualy very into Kaos. Legit when I found out they canceled it I canceled my netflix subscription because I am SO tired of every show I end up liking getting canceled.
My mom was watching and enjoying Kaos, and I chose not to watch it because I had a feeling it was gonna get the Netflix cancellation. It breaks my heart but I’ve watched too many seasons on Netflix that get cancelled to invest in any of their new shows, even shows that sound interesting to me. It also kills me to see media being lost (i.e. obliterated) beyond the death of art(which is deeply important to me), it’s also the erasure of a lot of hardworking people and jobs. This was a great video and I always enjoy seeing your viewpoints. Also in regards to my mom, I now have to deliver the news that Kaos is cancelled, as I’m sure she hasn’t heard… so yay for me😐
Ever heard of limitations? That's like asking any poor introverted person why don't they protect themselves from hitmen when they know they don't have anyone close to them to be assassinated by.
Excellent work. The Kaos cancellation was an insult. You could feel that the cast was blossoming and Season 2 would have been worth the wait. IMHO you are 100% right with your hypothesis and short of an Ackerman-style hostile take over of Netflix, I’m not sure how to “fix” it.
It’s hard to trust Netflix when they’re always canceling good originals and keeping obscure ones I never hear anyone talk about. I’m still upset about “I am not okay with this” being canceled and also canceling Lockwood & co a month after it came out and then launching “dead boy detective” which is basically the same show and that ones still around even tho I heard way more talk about Lockwood
Netflix is terrible overall, but I usually like and enjoy their international content. Before Netflix, I wasn’t watching foreign films or shows, but now I’ve seen great content from India, Turkey, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, Italy, Nigeria and others. It’s the AMERICAN content that sucks the most.
Pat, I know you poked a lot of fun at yourself here about, what makes a silly commentary UA-camr qualified to talk about this? But not nearly enough people are making noise about how a fully digital & streaming landscape has the potential to destroy our collective media library. As the world continues its dark flirtation with fascism I am terrified of what will happen with our access to media. When governments and the church banned books, people could secretly share them. We’ve seen the same thing with music, film, and television throughout history. We need physical media that cannot be taken from us in the blink of an eye, with no notice. We’ve seen it happen with Adult Swim shows that never had physical copies made and now the people who spent years working on those shows will never see them again. Continuing to silently accept the disappearance of physical media is something we need to confront now. If you haven’t been in a long time, go to your local library for DVDs of movies and shows. They have tons of options and you can pick something new by perusing like we used to at the video store. Also check your area for used media stores. I pick up DVDs for $5 or less all the time.
Yes! I recently got a DVD player and I feel like it's opened up a whole new world for me in terms of media (and maybe videos for the channel) but honestly owning it makes me feel like physical media is way more important than most people think. Honestly media going away saddens me
@@myfriendscallmepat I have the same feeling with the darn subcription on anything software related and pushing towards pure cloud service. In appstores for mobile devices it's worse and the subscription fees are too high and if they aren't they will surely crank them up soon enough. I don't subscribe for a program or an app. I rather happily pay a one time license and own that piece of code for usage and use it for as long as possible. Netflix cancelling any show I enjoy, Idk why I should stay subscribed to them. I don't even watch regularily and often I don't enjoy it and stop watching the show (I am not a big movie watcher). When I watched "The Glory" I was surprised how many episodes it had. Because Netflix went from giving a show 13 or so episodes and at least three seasons, to eight episodes and only one season, before they kick it. Or they shorten the last season and that the story can't be rounded up in a conclusive and satisfying manner. But yeah, go off and give us the 1000th season of some bs like Bachelor or whatever. Or the uptempth iteration of Dahmer (or any other serial killer) related content. And what enrages me since this year is, that they suggest stuff I have already watched AND rated or stuff in my watchlist. My whole feed is nothing else. Shows I watched, which are shows that were either cancelled, finished or short series to begin with. I wish I was exaggarating. Sorry, I just wanted to give a short comment but it ended in a rant.
I've been downloading and storing everything I watch and read for like 20 years now, and only delete it if it's absolute trash that I'm 100% sure I won't ever want to go back to. Whenever it comes up in conversation and I mention I have terabytes of media stored, people look at me like I'm a crazy hoarder and ask "why, you can just stream it?". This is exactly why. You can stream it _right now_ - tomorrow, who knows. The problem is especially bad with older or less mainstream content - a lot of it is difficult or impossible to find even today, let alone in another 20 years... Not to mention that I don't want to stay connected to the internet all the time just to watch videos, that just massively increases exposure to cyber attacks for no good reason.
@@kaorumugen991 Being dependent on being online is the reason I am absolutely opposed to cloud-based software. But we are at a point where they all push their services (for example MS Office) into the cloud. And then it can happen, that it won't work. Then despise the increasing cost for their "services" they quality of software and service maintenance is getting worse with more severe consequences for the user. While it may for the private user more an annoyance, for professionals it more debilitating.
I didn’t even know about Kaos-I don’t think it’s not *just* these practices, it’s the lack of marketing for these shows too. Outside of Stranger Things any original Netflix show not attached to an existing IP are fucked for marketing. I’d watch Kaos, if I KNEW about it?
i found out about kaos bcs i was searching for something to watch on netflix and it was literally in the TOP WATCHED SHOWS. genuinely had no idea they’d cancel it because i thought it was doing pretty well
I'm still salty over Netflix only ordering six episodes for the final season of Umbrella Academy. With the budget and time slashed to pieces the end result was horrendous. And yes, all the one season and that's it isn't appealing to me. Especially when the creators were hoping for more. Netflix holding the material hostage doesn't make it better. Let me buy a DVD or blueray of Glass Onion, please, I won't subscribe every time I want to watch the movie, or series, especially when you just butcher everything that isn't your next big cash cow social phenomenon. Besides all this, Pat, buddy, please iron your shirt. Or let someone iron it. I'll iron it if need be, because it is driving me up the wall.
One of the biggest issues I find with streaming is that it doesn't encourage you to watch new things. Especially with how hectic life is, you open just want a comfort show. And as you say do you really want to get into a show that could be stretched out too thin, get cancelled etc. Or just go to an old familiar. The huge issue is most people are choosing the old familiar, especially with the decision paralysis all these tv shows and movies cause when looking for things on streaming sites.
Honestly, between the password sharing hypocrisy and the cancelled shows, I ACTIVELY ENJOY not giving Netflix money. Like, every time I hear about a new Netflix thing I might like, I ask if I'd enjoy it more than I enjoyed cancelling my membership, and no, no I don't think I would. Netflix has EARNED my spiteful stubbornness, and that makes withholding my money from them an honest-to-goodness delight. To anyone on the fence, I highly recommend it!
It's like they don't care about satisfying their paying customers, they are profiting off the people that stay out of convenience (like myself, hoping they bring out a banger or a next season) or the reality show enthusiasts. They don't give a crap about art, otherwise they wouldn't cancel shows that are not fitting into the mainstream interest. Why do they even greenlight those shows to begin with? They know about the storyline. Or maybe they know it will satisfy their customers that want something not so easy digestible and they stay longer, like the clown that I am, in the hope of continuation or something similar getting released.
I was so hesitant about starting Kaos, it looked so good and I knew I was gonna be so frustrated if it got cancelled Dx They did such a good job with the casting and the remaining of the myths
Honestly, this is one of the main reasons I cancelled my subscription, every time I saw something I thought I might like it was like "but what if I love it and they cancel it"? Finding a new show that looked good became a source of angst instead of joy or excitement, I hated it!
The cancellation that really annoyed me was Mike Flanagan's "The Midnight Club." He's given Netflix nothing but successful limited series horror with a devoted fanbase (Hill House, Bly Manor, etc.) and the one time he requests a season 2 they cancel it. While Midnight Club wasn't as big as his other shows, I feel like one more season is the least Netflix could do. It really signals their lack of care for dedicated creators, audiences, and quality content.
Netflix broke my heart when it decided that "I Am Not Okay With This" deserved to die in the heart of Covid lockdowns. I don't know that I've watched more than a handful of domestic Netflix shows since then. It's hard to get invested in anything on TV anymore. Even the networks are killing decently rated shows for no clear reason.
It's obviously just a patch, not a true fix, but if nothing else, I think Netflix needs to change how it greenlights projects/presents them to the public, to give people a better time managing expectations. Like, openly label series with some new terminology that tells audiences whether "this show is so expensive, I need you to watch it within a month", "this show will get at least 2 seasons", etc. Have that be part of negotiations for shows: "If you're willing to take an X% reduction in budget, we'll lock in a second season." I think, similarly, they should put some effort into, if they don't want to break from their binge-model (which I think is a flawed choice, but so be it), they need to find another way to establish a better sense of a "schedule" for their shows. Break up the monthly content drop/shuffle over a week, with a different genre each day.
I loved The Midnight Club, then it got cancelled. I was super into Inside Job, and was excited when a second season was greenlit, then they cancelled the show 5 seconds after. Then shortly after that, Dead End Paranormal Park got cancelled. Then, when I was enjoying The Cuphead Show for being one of the most faithful video game adaptations I have seen in a while, that got put on limbo, and likely cancelled. I cancelled my subscription because there is no point anymore in getting excited for a new show if it won't even get past the first season. The anti-user practices and rising costs definitely didn't help.
Another thing that is killing modern tv is no commercials anymore. Don’t get me wrong I hate adds as much next person but they did help pay for the shows. Even if you had a vcr or another device to record shows research proved people would watch the add before there show or interesting add. More the company paid more chance their add would be played during prime time rather than 3am, which helped paid for the show. I remember being told at a convention in 2000’s the best way to get show not to be cancelled was either hand write a letter (because it took more effort than typing it) to the network or buy something that was advertised and hand write a note to them with receipt to prove their ad worked. (Don’t know if either of these methods worked but great idea for video) 😊 Now the streaming service has pay for making the show and to stream it. So if something is not an instant hit it will get axed. (Sometimes even if it is a hit.)
It’s a paradox of not wanting to watch a new series because you dont want to invest in something that will be canceled will lead it to be canceled because nobody watches it
The 28 days thing is pretty distressing, but it's good information and explains a lot, given the amount of one season wonders I have enjoyed only to say goodbye, it was nice while it lasted. Looking at you, Archive 81 (among others). Yeah, it's a puzzling phenomenon, and it definitely makes me cautious about ever starting any series on Netflix. Really enjoy your show, thanks!
Yeah, it's quite upsetting. I really enjoyed Kaos, but I didn't know anything about it until maybe two weeks before it was canceled. And I learned about it from a random UA-cam video that popped up in my feed.
I think the blame is on late stage capitalism creating a culture in which we want to be comfortable over pushing ourselves. I've often struggled to convince my friends into watching critically acclaimed films over them wanting to re-watch the same sitcom for the fifth time. It's led to a stale film and TV industry that whenever a show gets popular, 20 others try to copy it or reboots being made constantly. We're being sold nostalgia. Social media has made us used to creating our own echo chambers so we really aren't used to our opinions being criticised and being put out our comfort zones. This trickles down to traditional media doing the same thing and the stuff that is being made is boring repetitive slop that we'll happily eat up because that's what advertising over our whole lives have told us to do.
Ok, what are you going to replace capitalism with? You wanna abolish the system yet are unable to provide a alternative or how we would achieve that alternative
@@chaserseven2886 good strawman. I never said there's anything wrong with capitalism. The issue is late stage/corporate capitalism where the mega wealthy convince us that the only way to be happy is to buy loads of shit we don't need. Then when they realised they could only sell so much, they tried to repackage the same old shit to sell to the nostalgic parts of our brains. Which of course spread to the film and TV industries and they started to remake the same slop over and over again. The Wealth divide is completely unnecessary to capitalism but is only getting bigger and this is seen in the big TV and film companies, where the small film companies are struggling to stay afloat without being bought out.
Also, at what point do show runners for Netflix get the hint that they should just write shows that can be contained in one season. We know them now, and they keep gambling with cliffhangers as though one person can keep them from being cancelled.
18:30 This is where you earned my thumbs up. For real. Netflix makes documentaries on true crime stories that could be told in 40 min into 5 hr docuseries. It's pathetic
I think tons of shows that did just ok ratings at first went on to be the most popular?. Breaking bad, game of thrones, ect. Didn't peak in the first season. I don't even attempt to watch new things on Netflix because it's very likely it won't continue.
it’s genuinely crazy to me that unless a show blows up its first season they will just cancel it. i feel like that’s more of a loss of profit than just renewing it but advertising it harder??
Hey Pat love the outfit. Nonchalant af. Im living proof that the schools domt turn kids gay. I was home schooled and am still gay, it was just a lot harder journey than it needed to be. I choose to believe somwday someone will pay for the planned final three seasons of The OA to be produced. My god i love that show. The first seasons end made me weep, the seconds blew my fucking mind. Man. Its ending was criminal and tells you that these decisions have nothing to do with art; that they are the antithesis of art incarnate.
"Double-edged sword" refers to sharpness rather than structure. All flat blades have two edges but tend to have one that is sharp and one that is blunt. A "double-edged sword" refers to a weapon with two "cutting" edges.
As a classical musician, I appreciate the reference to Mozart and the newly discovered work, it's really cool when new works by long dead composers are found!
33: 22 this is exactly what I was talking about with family regarding 'Bark Skins' (a show about the Indigenous and French colonizers relationships in new territory, Canada, circa 1830ish) being removed from Amazon. In my opinion, if you have a show that it is your original IP and is tagged as an Amazon, original, or other sorts of company's original, there is no reason for it to suddenly be removed. There is no reason for the show to suddenly stop working but yet still be showcased on the platform and there is no reason for the show to be tagged as an original for your platform. If it's not going to be on your platform. I have now watched. Probably the better part of 4 to 5 'Amazon original' ip shows that are now still listed on Amazon as Amazon originals or were listed online on Amazon show as an Amazon exclusive and yet cannot be found at all. When people say that streaming platforms are not creating lost content, they are lying. They are creating lost media by hosting a show and then not having that show be available on that platform. At least that's my opinion because it it shouldn't be this way
isn't it ironic being sponsored by factor in a video that analyses the negative impact and unsustainability of that exact model? also they are famous for treating their employees like shit
As someone who also really tries to take notice of the streaming model, I’m really unsure of how Netflix in particular decides what to keep. One of my favorite directors/filmmakers is Mike Flannigan. His first series, Haunting of Hill House really caught on and since then the man has been cooking, and while horror is not everyone’s cup of tea I know that there is a significant group of people that absolutely turn out for Flannigan’s work. Here’s where it gets bonkers. Almost all of his limited series have been one season long, with the only exception being the Midnight Club, a series meant to last two seasons. When the first season wrapped up, guess what happened? Season 2 was cancelled. It’s kills me because some of these shows are inherently niche. Film can objectively be good, but it’s also a matter of taste. Some people can’t do horror and that’s ok, but the more and more time goes on I just can’t find the energy in myself to care about anything new because it feels like Netflix is siphoning filmmakers and creatives to churn out as much content as possible just to feed their stupid algorithm at the cost of giving audiences and shows the time to refine themselves.
Their algorithm(s?) aren't even able to suggest me anything but shows I already watched AND rated. And most of them are either cancelled, finished or short series, OR in my watchlist.
Well, Netflix and the subscription model in general, I'd say! Like software, you used to just buy the software and you owned it, you didn't rent it by the month! When Netflix was a new thing, I was in college. They had some hard to find DVDs in their selection, which really drew me in. I would be hunting down weird bootleg VHS Asian horror movies on Ebay in those days, and they'd have the same stuff on DVD! So I subscribed. And for a while you could only stream a few hours a week, and I watched old episodes of "Kolchak :Night Stalker" while I was working as a security assistant in the dorms. And now it just seems like slop to me and I've stopped my subscription. I thought Netflix's "Bandersnatch" (2018) was kind of fun though.
I quite enjoyed Bandersnatch but at the time I remember being kinda bummed out that they weren't doing a full season, instead releasing what was a much shorter experience. Still, props to them
@@myfriendscallmepat You make such a good point about people just not having shared experiences to talk about anymore though, too many services, everyone off in their own bubble. I've largely given up lately, I buy DVDs to watch movies without commercials and for the special features, and then I watch YT videos.
Love the video! Studios/services seem to struggle with learning the right lessons from things, I think. They don't seem to understand how much audience trust ties into watching. If you look at how many people in the comments aren't watching shows because they don't want to be stuck after it's cancelled, you can see that the powers that be are creating a vicious cycle. They cancel because "no one watches season one", but people often aren't watching because they know Netflix will cancel. As i think you're illustrating, they're letting the money people decide, and they see products, not art. The number of artists/authors/etc. who weren't popular in their time shows that this is an awful way to determine the value of art.
I don't subscribe to Netflix (or Amazon) but I do see some of the movies they bankroll when they hit theaters for 3 days. tick tick Boom should be a midnight movie staple in any town that has a college with a theater department, yet it's pretty much forgotten by now. What worries me more is the fact that they don't release their films on DVD, which means they will disappear forever when they don't get enough views - goodbye, Saltburn. I was glad to see All of Us Strangers got released on Criterion but at the usual outrageous price. It is disturbing that DVD's are dying because it is the only way many movies will survive - at least in their original form, and not sanitized (Disney classics) or reimagined versions (Star Wars). I used to be against pirating because, you know, it's illegal, but then I remembered we wouldn't have Murnau's Nosferatu if it weren't for illegal prints being around way back then.
Commenting for the algorithm 😆 Its such a pain to find new tv. Why bother emotionally investing if its only 1 season? I won't even start watching until its at least 3 or 4 nowadays.
At this point, Mike Flanagan is the only thing that excites me on Netflix. First because he makes mini-series and doesn't have to worry about getting cancelled after a major cliffhanger, second because his shows are miles above the usual interchangeable brainrot content Netflix seems to love so much. I can spend 10 minutes sifting through the catalogue without finding anything worth watching. I might as well do that on TV for free.
Things I watch you while doing: drawing, composing, shiny hunting, and EV training pokemon. The long videos 100% are best for it. Less clicking about. Amazing video as usual!
The pearl clutching freakout over Cuties is extremely weird as the movie itself was criticizing the sexualization of children. The vast majority of people who talked about it clearly didn’t even watch it.
The actual sad part, is that as the lsat scene happened at the end of the first of the only season of Kaos and it cut to black, I literally said out loud 'yep, this won't get a season 2' and it didn't. I do feel as well, that a lot of shows have multiple seasons, that really didn't need them. Killing Eve is a show that I really liked but it has five seasons and it only needed one. The first season is based on a book, the rest are just fanfiction based on the book and everything but the end scene of season 1 was great. The writers changed the ending, to make it a multi season phenomenon and the best that they could do was give it Heroes syndrome, where character motivations just bounced around without rhyme or reason. I'm glad I stopped at Season 1. Which I've watched several times over the years but always stopped at its end.
most people i see talk about killing eve say that it’s good except for the final season which has a terrible ending. do you think it would be satisfying to watch it but skip the last season?
@lilacfields my parents watched the other seasons and regretted it The show gets serious Heroes Syndrome where characters change alignment every episode and the post season 1 episodes apparently give off the impression that they were made up as they went along. I've not seen them myself, just going off what I've heard but it doesn't sound too shocking.
@@professorcurious You shouldn't base your opinion on other people's experience. But yeah, I am another one that was pissed about the very last episode. It made partially no sense how they were behaving (regarding how their characters were presented the whole show long) and the end was enraging and destroying one favourite character of mine, while killing another character. I tried to rewatch the whole show but for some reason the cruelty really bothered me out of a sudden. I think when you know what happens it takes away the suspense and you see it from a different angle. But I generally don't enjoy rewatching anything. I can't remember the season it was, but what they did to Kenny (?) was absolutely pointless for the plot and then instead introducing a sister that came out of nothing, was also a cheap plot device and a season later she was gone again, never be mentioned.
@@MsSonali1980 Yeah, sounds like a classic case of Heroes Syndrome. That final scene in the first season just felt like the actual writers left their pens unattended and then someone else sneaked an ending in, it was so bad and it just set the tone going forward. It really should have been a one and done.
@@professorcurious The show got carried by the cast, and for that reason I enjoyed it. The overall red thread, plot wise, really wasn't that well thought out. The Twelve mystery was blah, especially regarding the pointe. The cast makes it look like a piece of art, the story (besides the Villanelle + Eve one) is rather generic.
What I'm learning is the Producers is silly because the basic premise is just something that happens all the time every day and no one could mess it up.
My problem with Netflix is how many originals they have. Out of all major streaming services, they have more originals than regular shows/movies. Like you said they barely get a chance, but Netflix also does a shitty job of advertising these shows which is probably another reason most don't get a second chance. I bet I could go on Netflix rn and find a 1 season show that was released over a year ago that I never heard of.
Netflix makes decent series, decent comiedies, only thing is they make to much. Sounds like a good problem to have but its so oversaturated that it takes a half hour to find something good. And now there doing half a season then you have to wait a couple months for the other half. Jist release the whole thing. Then they NEVER have enough seasons to finish the story. It always leavea on a cliff hanger only to be cancelled. I started watching the limited series. Usually 16 episodes with a beginning, middle, and an end. OH and different languages with subtitles.
I love shows and creative media. This is so heartbreaking for me! I could list at least 15 shows that have bit the dust that I love so much but didn’t get the chance to finish or finish properly. Shows aren’t just shows. They are art that needs to be respected and taken seriously. Many people put their heart and soul into these projects and I rips out my heart to know all of these shows and more are getting canned. Wish there was something we could do that could have a lasting impact. I am aware of the animation guild protests and indie animation/live action. I have discovered so many gems that need the attention and money to be successful! We need to take a stand, no matter how small!!
I usually watch Netflix when i go donate platelets. You're in the chair for over an hour so they have screens for you to watch stuff and apparently multiple Netflix accounts for each donation center (correct me if I'm wrong on that one). Obviously you can't finish a series on that account, you aren't guaranteed the same chair when you come back. It sucks to learn that while I'm donating platelets, i might be contributing to the cancellation of a show because i watched less than half 😢
I totally agree with people needing to get out and go to the movies with your friends, I’ve been an advocate of that for years! Movies are made to be seen on the big screen, I’ve been an AMC A-lister since 2018 and I try to go to the movies every weekend. I would like to start buying more physical media, I haven’t had Netflix for almost two years now.
17:13 First time I saw the Nicole Kidman ad, I rolled my eyes and shrugged it off as dumb Tenth time, I was starting to get attached. Thirtieth time, I'm reciting it alongside her. This is a ritual now, key to starting any movie at AMC Eightieth time, I'm pissed they shortened it to play a dumb, referential Coke ad before it, ending with her saying "that's magic." It went full circle.
This is why I don't watch an shows on Netflix until after 3 or 4 months. I don't like falling in love and then being disappointed because there's no second season.
26:27- yep, the classic TV vs cable/streaming series chasm. old show's writing staff would usually find their footing by season 3. now script doctors, consultants & extra staff are brought in to make sure the first season is killer, and then the production sinks or swims in the following seasons... and the quality drops off. I think HBO pretty much started that. there's also the problem w/trying to have season long arcs & character arcs, so whatever your series bible was at the start becomes unrecognizable by the end, and (imo) that's when you get audience malaise- even tho people think they want big changes to happen to their favorite characters, they actually don't, because then it's a different show.
Movies like Dune 2 and The Substance give me hope for cinema. Two great movies; that not only were successful at the box office but also made a big cultural impact.
The 28 days to get 50% retention is probably why Netflix is so bad at making Black Mirror episodes compared to Channel 4. An anthology show cannot work in Netflix format, probably why it is very to see them unless Netflix bought the rights to a popular show.
Btw I realized last week Netflix doesn't show even all the regional shows that it has. I am a Finnish person that had N profile set as Finnish with Finnish subs. The default, as I hadn't played around with my settings. We wanted to see a show together and I was logged on my profile so we searched it. I could not find many asian shows my spouse had been watching on our joined family account. I did find all those shows but only after I changed my set language. Same region, same account, but set language removed many shows from my profile. I'm really disliking this what Netflix is starting to look like.

Hey loser, what does it say about the brains of the people that were colonized if the French had brains the size of macaroons? Sit on that , lil boy.
I have a professor who recently worked on a project with Netflix that wound up falling through. He has been in the industry for literal decades, and according to him, he’s never seen anyone waste more money than Netflix.
Oof, not exactly reassuring
And their messed up metrics, makes them cancel their own good stuff. Inside job, why, why cancel it, why?
finding out kaos got cancelled through your thumbnail is sending me spiraling
Right? It was so refreshing, it will be missed
It was such a good show and I was just about to watch the final episode.
I cant even bring myself to do it knowing it will never be finished.
I canceled Netflix after I found out. Netflix ain't gonna play with me like this no more.
This is why piraracy is important, because even when netflix deletes a product from it's servers you can still watch it.
Don’t mean to be that guy but it’s piracy
Piracy is justified if its the only way to consume something you love. Why should we allow companies and individuals dictate when a product that was previously available for the general public is or not available to the general public?
It's honestly telling that after watching Blue Eye Samurai my next thought after "this show goes hard" was "they better not cancel this". I'm still salty after Inside Job, among... countless others.
Yeppp Inside Job loomed large when I was making this video sadly :/
i still mourn the loss of I Am Not Okay With This 😭 it deserved more than one season
I'm still bitter about GLOW. The fourth series was literally the final one, and it was greenlit, but because of Covid instead of shelving it till later Netflix just killed it.
SANTA CLARITA DIETTTTTT 😢 😩!!!!!!
Yeah I was so hyped for Inside Job season 2 especially after that ending and was so mad when it got canceled
As soon as I finished Kaos I instantly knew that it will be canceled. At this point I can just feel it.
And apparently Netflix owns DBD, so they can't shop around. So close to putting on the Joker makeup.
They cancelled Kaos because it wasn't getting enough views... my brother in christ, you're the publisher, the advertising is your job...
Yeah the advertising did them dirty.
“Hey ya wanna watch a bunch of old movie stars from yesteryear pretend to be the Roman gods?”
Nah. Can’t say I do.
How can it be in top 10 and not get a lot of views remind sof everyone saying no one watched the Acoltye but when the numbers came out it was the 5th most watched show of the entire year
they advertised so badly
If a show is not successful by season 1 it is cancelled and most of the successful shows in history didn't get popular until season 3.
Some never even achieve mainstream success, but have like six seasons....
I LOOOOVED Kipo and I was so sad to find almost no community for it since I found it a while after it came out
@FowlsNest Well, here's another Kipo fan! I watched it with my family, and yeah, it's surprising how little Fandom I can find for it.
That show is so good and deserved to be as big a cultural hit as MLP and Gravity Falls.
Archive 81 - hugely popular first season, massive audience retention, probably pretty cheap to make too... immediately cancelled on a cliff-hanger.
These days I like to have a mixture of both. I love to see movies in the theater but I like seeing them at home as well. It’s all about balance.

The cancellation of Kaos killed me
I didn’t know this! That sucks.
Same I was devastated that such a entertaining and fantastic show that had awesome lgbtq+ and disability representation was cancelled so quickly :'(
What?! It’s cancelled?! 🤬 I’m so mad, yall!
really damn.i really liked it
The cancelation of Kaos got me to cancel Netflix, and I explained the reason why in the comment field.
Buy physical media. When you do. You're putting integrity back into art.
And pirate everything that's not available physically. Pirating things that were never given physical releases is saving media that would have been lost forever.
Yeah I wanted more physical media, but I've been running into a lot of issues with DVD decay. Pirating is the way to go
Art ALWAYS has integrity.
But what about shows that they DO finish and are “complete”?

I got tired of Netflix canceling shows I loved, so I canceled Netflix.
@ They may be canceled, but you can ALWAYS still watch them.
@ If you cancel Netflix, you’re just losing access to them, and is that REALLY what you want?
Netflix on their way to cancel another show that everyone loves
Something else that bothers me of Netflix is not only how they kill shows/movies, but how also they never bother to announce them as well and dear god it's even worse when it comes to animation in Netflix, like some shows seems to have a lot of love from Netlifx but the rest? They either end WAY too soon or worse they are on limbo since nobody knows if the show is even alive, still hurt we will never see a third season of Glitch Techs
Especially when they put the entire season immediately (Recent Lara Croft animated show).
They really expect people to binche watching and then expect immediate popularity even when there is no time fandoms to form.
They expect you to constantly be searching the home page for new things to watch.
Netflix isn't killing Art. Capitalism is. The Culture Industry is.

Do you think Disney would exist today, if it wasn't for capitalism? I'm not saying Disney is a "good" company, but to say that Capitalism is killing Art, while creating companies like Disney, is nonsensical.
Dark Crystal getting cancelled was a crime against humanity.
Agree! It was so good. Mindhunter was also very good too.
In some ways I get it I’m sure it was expensive and niche
But at the same time surely most of the cost was up front and once puppets and sets were built would plummet
Not Netflix, but Hazbin Hotel’s first season had to be rushed due to fear of cancellation. They crammed so much into 8 episodes to have a satisfying conclusion just in case. It got renewed for another season, so hopefully that won’t be rushed, but it’s a shame that streaming services are forcing artists to condense their art to keep people’s attention spans instead of making a satisfying show
I love Hazbin but I can't help but imagine how good S1 could've been
Considering the other show Vivziepop did, Helluva Boss, I am sceptical of Hazbin hotel having a good first season even if the fear of cancellation was removed.
Is that why that season was a mess?
@@randomtinypotatocriedwhat do you mean a mess? I personally loved it
I've had Netflix for 12 years and cancelled this year.
I’d consider this their most heinous crime!! 😭😭
Also in regards to my mom, I now have to deliver the news that Kaos is cancelled, as I’m sure she hasn’t heard… so yay for me😐
I had to break the news to my Dad who loved it! ☹️
Netflix is literally running themselves into the ground canceling everything people enjoy.

Im so bummed!! It was so good!
Yeah, there's lot of talk of Lockwood and Co as people want it back so bad.
Dead Boy Detectives got cancelled too 😭
Netflix is terrible overall, but I usually like and enjoy their international content.
Honestly media going away saddens me
Also arrr, Olan from final space said it best in his heartbreaking speach, hang on what however you can :(
he mean pirating and so.

I didn’t even know about Kaos-I don’t think it’s not *just* these practices, it’s the lack of marketing for these shows too. Outside of Stranger Things any original Netflix show not attached to an existing IP are fucked for marketing. I’d watch Kaos, if I KNEW about it?

Lmao ok noted
Same.
I was so hesitant about starting Kaos, it looked so good and I knew I was gonna be so frustrated if it got cancelled Dx
They did such a good job with the casting and the remaining of the myths
Honestly, this is one of the main reasons I cancelled my subscription, every time I saw something I thought I might like it was like "but what if I love it and they cancel it"? Finding a new show that looked good became a source of angst instead of joy or excitement, I hated it!
I literally canceled my Netflix subscription when I found out they hadn't renewed Dead Boy Detective Agency. Never again, Netlix.
They did the same to the creators of Dark, when they only got one season for their show 1899, that was intented as multi-seasonal.
It's kinda sad that a lot of genuine good shows on Netflix get canceled really quickly.
Have that be part of negotiations for shows: "If you're willing to take an X% reduction in budget, we'll lock in a second season."
I think, similarly, they should put some effort into, if they don't want to break from their binge-model (which I think is a flawed choice, but so be it), they need to find another way to establish a better sense of a "schedule" for their shows.
The anti-user practices and rising costs definitely didn't help.
as a fan of dead boy detectives... seriously Netflix? its connected to sandman! its literally a dc comic, can you not?
I hate that they didn't renew it.
(Don’t know if either of these methods worked but great idea for video) 😊
Now the streaming service has pay for making the show and to stream it. So if something is not an instant hit it will get axed. (Sometimes even if it is a hit.)
No two minute Flavor-Aid tangent AGAIN?! RIP old Pat frfr
bro changed since he popped off 🤧miss the old him
It’s a paradox of not wanting to watch a new series because you dont want to invest in something that will be canceled will lead it to be canceled because nobody watches it
The 28 days thing is pretty distressing, but it's good information and explains a lot, given the amount of one season wonders I have enjoyed only to say goodbye, it was nice while it lasted.
Thanks for watching boss!
In the words of Hank Hill, you’re not making rock n roll(cinema) better, you’re making Christianity(television) worse
Also, at what point do show runners for Netflix get the hint that they should just write shows that can be contained in one season. We know them now, and they keep gambling with cliffhangers as though one person can keep them from being cancelled.
18:30
This is where you earned my thumbs up.
Okay f _ _ _ _ _
At least that's my opinion because it it shouldn't be this way
RIP "Mindhunter" and "1899"
isn't it ironic being sponsored by factor in a video that analyses the negative impact and unsustainability of that exact model? also they are famous for treating their employees like shit
Still mad dead end was cancelled after two seasons when it literally only had one more season to go...
Huh. Guess the show lived up to its name and really *was* a dead end 😂
I'll always be mad about Warrior Nun and the Imperfects. And, heck: Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters.
Side note: Please go see Kaos. It’s pretty good and a fun twist on the Greek Mythos.
I suddenly feel a lot better about pirating anything that was released on a streaming service.
14:06 forgot to link the Uglies review btw!!
17:27 Ironically this is a single edged sword, as only one side of the blade is sharp. A double edged sword has both sides of the blade sharpened
Netflix stole me archive 81...I FELT IN LOVE WITH SEASON 1
Commenting for the algorithm 😆
Its such a pain to find new tv. Why bother emotionally investing if its only 1 season? I won't even start watching until its at least 3 or 4 nowadays.
FWIW, Kaos was good and the season as it exists was very enjoyable, would highly recommend despite its cancellation. Very happy with my time with it!
The older I get the more I say “back in the day” or “when I was a kid”!…
Used to roll my eyes when grandpa would say that while I was growing up 😂🤪
It frustrates me that so many shows get taken off streaming. Remember Willow on Disney+? Well its gone forever now.
And thats why, people-
You should support Indie all you can!!!!! (They have actual passion and soul over there)
i wish more of who i followed had the means to release physical media!
woooo baby's first (I think) sponsor we're so proud!!!
The pearl clutching freakout over Cuties is extremely weird as the movie itself was criticizing the sexualization of children. The vast majority of people who talked about it clearly didn’t even watch it.
SO GLAD U HAVE A SPONSOR!!
1:13 i’m pretty sure that was debunked? like there are no primary sources that say the audiences reacted that way 😭
The actual sad part, is that as the lsat scene happened at the end of the first of the only season of Kaos and it cut to black, I literally said out loud 'yep, this won't get a season 2' and it didn't.
@lilacfields my parents watched the other seasons and regretted it
The show gets serious Heroes Syndrome where characters change alignment every episode and the post season 1 episodes apparently give off the impression that they were made up as they went along.
Netflix has also made everyone do 8 episode seasons when a lot of shows really, really, really need more!
I loved Kaos. As a fan of Greek mythology I thought it was a wonderful reinvention.
The Mona Lisa died?! 😭
Kaos is canceled??? NOOOOO!
28:23 it's "seasons one" in the same way that the plural of attorney general is "attorneys general" (thank you maya & kamala for teaching me)
I totally agree with people needing to get out and go to the movies with your friends, I’ve been an advocate of that for years! Movies are made to be seen on the big screen, I’ve been an AMC A-lister since 2018 and I try to go to the movies every weekend.
I would like to start buying more physical media, I haven’t had Netflix for almost two years now.
17:13 First time I saw the Nicole Kidman ad, I rolled my eyes and shrugged it off as dumb
Tenth time, I was starting to get attached.
Thirtieth time, I'm reciting it alongside her. This is a ritual now, key to starting any movie at AMC
Eightieth time, I'm pissed they shortened it to play a dumb, referential Coke ad before it, ending with her saying "that's magic." It went full circle.
This is why I don't watch an shows on Netflix until after 3 or 4 months. I don't like falling in love and then being disappointed because there's no second season.
Solid overview! Commenting for engagement.
20:20 Look, if joining the ladies of Flavortown is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
Movies like Dune 2 and The Substance give me hope for cinema. Two great movies; that not only were successful at the box office but also made a big cultural impact.
Agreed!
The 28 days to get 50% retention is probably why Netflix is so bad at making Black Mirror episodes compared to Channel 4. An anthology show cannot work in Netflix format, probably why it is very to see them unless Netflix bought the rights to a popular show.
Im so happy for you that you got a sponsor ❤
Btw I realized last week Netflix doesn't show even all the regional shows that it has. I am a Finnish person that had N profile set as Finnish with Finnish subs. The default, as I hadn't played around with my settings. We wanted to see a show together and I was logged on my profile so we searched it. I could not find many asian shows my spouse had been watching on our joined family account. I did find all those shows but only after I changed my set language.
Same region, same account, but set language removed many shows from my profile. I'm really disliking this what Netflix is starting to look like.
Just found your channel from this video being featured on my homepage, subscribed when I saw the Rubina & Tucker photo!! Gotta follow anyone else out there who still watches Big Brother every season!
I am so excited for next summer already. Maybe this is the year I get cast lol (a guy can dream)
