You need to try to duel all important characters (press R button). You should hear a ding. After you attempt to duel everyone (except Rex) they walk away. Then go to the clock screen and as you leave the screen the tournament will begin. FYI, all monster cards that are orange instead of yellow have a special ability in a duel. Click on them and press "effect" to activate.
