THANK YOU! Absurd structure for a horse by itself.
"Trainer" has an obligation to the horse first. Which shouldn't involve roughing the horse up to make it tolerate unsuitable stabling. The horse will be stall walking and kicking the place apart when left without another horse.

I definitely feel the structure needs to be horse proofed. I believe she is uncomfortable with several things. 1: the hollow sound on the floor. I think if you added mats it would be less stressful and wouldn't sound so hollow. 2: The windows.. This is a potential disaster and not horse friendly. I would remove the windows, leave the window space available for her to stick her head out and see what is going on. If it's too big a space, make it smaller, but make it available for her to stick her head out and see what is going on around her. 3: Secure the front area with a solid half wall. This way she can see the other horses and she can be safe but keep her from hurting herself. 4) Remove the cart from the entrance of her stall. This is potentially another accident. I would guess she would be uncomfortable with the floor. It's like being on a bridge and needing the security of a floor that provides more security. I really believe these are her issues. It's not about her behavior, it's about feeling safe and knowing what goes on around her.

Ok, I am sure many have commented on the setup. But I cannot help myself, having wood floors will cause many problems. Just the fact the horse will urinate on them, and it will soak in causing terrible ammonia smell and it will cause the floor to rot. The horse is being closed into a dark ventless room with hard floors, which will also cause joint and muscle issues. Just a suggestion to add mats and shavings, remove the glass windows and replace with wooden shutters and I would even put a window in the door. Not trying to offend anyone, just my opinion.

Why lock horses up at night? There’s a problem being created where there doesn’t need to be one. Just leave them out at night. They’re fine.
Leave the door open and let the horses decide if they want to go in if the weather is bad.
Also you’re leading her in and out from the brightness of outside to the darkness inside and vice versa. Horses eyes can’t adjust to sudden changes like that. They become temporarily blinded. That’s one reason why she’s nervous and flinging her head at the door opening.
Another reason is that door is way too narrow, she feels trapped with no escape. That makes any prey animal nervous. And that door opening is also too low. She already racked her head on it. That can cause long term injury.

Me too. I have non rescues who are calm and would go "2 X 4, who cares?". Stall fronts or dividers have much more than a few 2 x 4's that far apart. It must as least appear to be a solid wall or she will continue to try and go under, over, around, and through holes as any horse would to be with the other horses. The framing is also what the horse is up against and I would be putting in kick boards ASAP or even finishing the interior (depends on personal choice), but kick boards are a must imo. I also can't clearly see what the floor is so I don't want to make any comments about it so I will simply say "Stall mats". If she will be expected to be in there overnight and be walking in/out she needs traction and even with quality solid flooring stall mats make it so I can put down bedding and the horse can have bio needs met and I can easily poop scoop or whatever is needed. It's not negative, just not finished yet and needs some additional touches. Having the framing open right now makes it easy to put a good divider/stall door in the middle there.
I do really like the women's fencing. The white high tensile fencing is very nice. The size is nice where the horse can walk in with a person and fully move around and the person can be off to the side and the horse can walk back out. The height is nice as well. I agree it would just be a "work in progress" if at my home and needs a few things to make it SAFE enough for a horse. I know those things cost less than a vet bill for a horse who would not care about a 2 X 4 however.

One thing, the 'barn's is a cold barren space. It needs to be floor covered with puffy nice-to- play-in straw, she needs a trough that holds sweet smelling hay that's yummy to eat, a grain bucket and a water bowl at chest height - as she drinks it fills with fresh like the pet water stations. That is her home, but it's set up inside with nothing at all, no wonder she wants to jump the rail to be with the other horses, where there's at least company and body warmth. She was isolated before and alone with her fears and she is now. She needs to be able to see the other horses, but not enough to leave her comfort and food. A salt grain lard fruit biscuit nightly will give her something to look forward to going in her space.

I have to add a comment about “hitting the horse with the rope.” Just as he mentioned, horses are very rough with one another. This is possibly an 1800 pound animal and trust me that little rope didn’t hurt this horse. The action might have scared her, or made her uncomfortable(which was the point) but it didn’t hurt her. They are big tough animals that have carried humans on their backs into battle. They have been rode over miles of terrain, and hauled heavy loads in wagons, etc. The list could go on and on. I guess I’m just saying we need to stop looking at them with human emotions and remember throughout history what these animals have done for us and with us. They survive in the wild, and they manage without our help. They thrive as a matter of fact. I think he has a great understanding of this and it’s another reason why I am fast becoming his number one fan!😊 i will definitely continue to watch because I really miss training horses, and just being around them in general.

It is not Rose's job to berate the owner for her choice in shelter, design, or ownership in this instance. The shelter itself is not an issue if the horse that sleeps in it is calm and collected. Rose is teaching the horse that her life will not be over when she is housed. He's showing her that her owner will protect her, and that closed doors won't kill her.
Teaching a horse how to be calm and trusting and relaxed in new environments and when experiencing new things makes a horse's life much less frightening. The door is small, but it won't kill her. There is no reason for her to feel claustrophobic - since her prey animal brain is wired to think the small spaces will make her susceptible to predators that, in this shed, do not exist - so she is being taught to trust this space despite its size. It's better to have a horse that is trusting in EVERY environment possible, familiarizing the horse to as many stimuli as possible.
Whether or not you approve of her life with this owner is irrelevant. This is her life. And she needs to figure out how to feel safe and comfortable here for her to be happy. That just means teaching her that her instincts in regard to this shed aren't protecting her, they're hindering her.

The fact is though, horses can't be "happy" or "comfortable" in suboptimal environments (such as stables without other horses next to them). Horses can learn to cope with being stabled, and being alone... they can learn to put up with it because there's no choice . But they will never be comfortable or happy, because horses need space and freedom to roam, and herd mates, to be happy

The horse has freedom and has a herd.

Horses evolved on the Eurasian Steepes. My horses spend the entire winter outside. In the California Sierras temperatures drop to the low teens and single digits nightly. No blankets. They have shelter if they choose. The only problem that I have observed is if it rains at 40 degrees. That makes them cold. The rain mats down the protective qualities of their winter coat. Then a shelter is much appreciated.
However, wild horses do not have access to “shelter,” they seem to thrive with gusto as long as there is feed and water.

And, a horse that is very thin, running a temp, or that has some other underlying medical issue, those numbers won't hold. The bigger and stockier the animal, the better it handles cold. The leaner and lighter built the horse, the better they handle heat. Simple physics.

If you are, and you certainly need to be or you are going to be run over and never have respect, going to be the leader you have to establish yourself that way. A lone grazer is a dead grazer. If she were in a stall immediately adjacent to the geldings would probably be calming for her.
But, I found that shelter to be an invitation for injury. A horse can find ways to injure themselves if left alone in a padded cell. Those windows with just cattle panels over them look, to me, as if she would try to bust out through them if she gets spooked, which she does. The widely spaced 2x4's were also an invitation to make a prison break.

Can't write a simple comment without some random implying you're dumb or ignorant. What a world.
I only have a general idea of what feng shui is, I said that tongue in cheek. Everywhere I have been and seen had higher ceilings, for one. I am aware not everywhere will have higher ceilings or be like the original horse barns and sheds I have seen and visited. You can't imagine the horse kicking through one of the spaces between the bars, breaking a window, and getting their lacerated leg trapped through the bars? Why, I don't know, but I have seen pictures of dead horses with their halters caught on improbable things, horses who tried to jump a gate/panel and their highquarters are hung up on the other side of the panel - point of saying that is, they do get themselves in a pickle sometimes. It is our job to provide the safest place we can, and I see she tried to do that. The lightbulb has a cage, the bars on the window, sliding door, a way to see other horses. He did suggest adding more boards, so she did overlook that safety issue. Still, the FEEL which is what I'm talking about, is weird. And I'm talking about my feel, not your feel. You can't imagine her rearing and beaning herself on the lumber? One instructor had us watch a short training session and the whole class witnessed the horse break their neck against a wall. I haven't seen alot of small, home farms so I am uncomfortable with this space. And I've seen enough for that to be a valid opinion.

It was a new boarder that wouldn't stand tied. I don't like my old instructors method for dealing with that. There are better ways than tying to the barn and letting them resist the rope until they give up. It wasn't the first time she flung herself down and threw her neck around while lunging back to her feet. But this time the wall was in the way. With the right circumstances, disasters happen. So. I can see the owner is trying and put thought into it. I'm just a viewer saying what I see. Is the horse going to rear into a ceiling beam or kick through a space between the window bars? Probably not, but I don't wear a seatbelt because I _expect_ to get hit that day, and that lightbulb isn't covered because they expect her to rear into it.

Maybe leave the shelter available for her when it gets cold, and let her choose when she goes in and out.
Get her a blanket for when it’s really cold and windy. Build a half door and let her stick her head out the windows.

this is nothing more than a slightly modified shed from Lowes. I would think the horse would feel claustrophobic.

I have horses too for years and I would secure so she can't jump over but at night I just would leave her free to go in or out maybe make a smaller outside paddock to lock her unlike stall size from the door to the wheel barrow put rubber matts and some shavings in the stall and keep her food and water inside but not trap her in , she is terrified of being confined

Tha's not a barn. That's a shed. Who puts GLASS windows in a barn that a horse can kick through?

A very helpful video, thank you, Ryan! 👍
Many comments here are about that stall and its (un)suitability for horses. Some of the points raised concerning the risk of accidents and the challenge such a stall represents to a horse's instincts are valid but take no account of the fact that we know nothing of the circumstances and that it is rather presumptious to tell another horse owner she HAS to do things our way!
I had a horse who also felt very uncomfortable in small enclosed spaces but had learned to at least accept them with previous owners and I was thankful for this because at one time (bad colic) it saved his life. All Ryan is doing here is encouraging the mare to stop and think (which generally poses much less danger to a horse in a human environment than reacting only from instincts) and realize that while she would not choose this stall for her favourite spot, it still offers no threat and can even provide shelter and feed. Perhaps the stall has some necessity for being closed I don't see, as I do not even know where in the US this is taking place (blizzards in winter, predators...?). I live in a moderate climate and have been able to leave the choice of whether he stays inside or out largely up to my horse, protecting him by a weatherproof rug if the weather was truly nasty, but I needed time to find solutions because I was inexperienced at first like everyone is at one time.
This owner certainly has my respect for taking in rescues and trying to make sure that they have a good life and by being ready to learn by turning to a good trainer for help. I hope you will have many good years with this mare and your other horses! 👍

If there were a blizzard outside the horse would appreciate refuge .... so make the outside a blizzard..
