Brother, I just wanted to thank you and let you know that I'm gonna go out tomorrow and wire up my 81 xv750 because of how easy you made all this. Thank you so much! It's been sitting in my garage for years because I was too scared to start taking out the 42 year old harness but now , I'm gonna get that fiery woman roadworthy!
ok, so I have a fuse block but I'm confused as to where I should attach the brown wire from the main switch(not the tap to the regulator/rectifier) onto the fuse block...to clarify, I do not know whether to connect it at the +,-, or to the side positive output terminals, or the ground input terminals... I think 90% of everything else is correct with uncertainty resting in the fuseblock connections and whether I have the two wires connecting the starter and solenoid attached the proper wires "the aftermarket solenoid uses two completely different colored wires than the stock wires. Any further help you can give me or if you explained it in the videos and I missed it maybe some time stamps? Thanks!
Very good video. I am getting ready to completely rewire an old bike and this was the most helpful so far. I feel it is possible finally.
Dude im wiring a 85 yamaha virago and you have helped me so much and you are a beast keep it up bro thx again from chi-town
Good job. This stuff is what stops a lot of bike builders in their tracks, I'm sure the video will be a big help to many people.
😮
Video was made 4 years ago and still helping people.. thank you!
Killer videos man! These are really helpful in demystifying bike wiring. Its much easier as a new builder to break down these steps into individual components. This way the project doesn't seem so daunting and over complicated. Once the bike fires up, everything else just seems less complicated.
You also mentioned Antigravity batteries in one of your other posts, can you be a little more specific?
I feel so much more confident on my bobber build. I'm chugging away mocking up parts as I can afford em. The whole time watching videos dreading the wiring. I'm looking forward to it now... thanks!
Thank you Chief Pep. Good video like the first. It’s helping me put some of the fundamentals together. I think I’ll fully “get it” soon. Thanks!
Can't thank you enough man. Got my 84 virago 750 to fire up straight away for the first time last night
Thank you so much! This really demistifies the wiring system. Thank you, it really gave me the courage to redo the wiring on my TW 😄
You solved all my problems I've been dealing with for a month now thank you
Great job with this video. Taking it step by step, paciently, is very helpful! TKS
Best video I’ve seen yet about this subject great job
Thanks you made me understand fully how the wiring system works.
Good videos straight forward and easy to understand. I am learning a lot from watching your videos, well done!
Clearly explained. Thanks, mate.
Hi there bud, just want to say thanx alot your video helped alot, got my bike to run. Regards from South Africa
Well done as a Aircraft avionics Tech i say great video and explanation. Top Notch
I am not yet in this part, but watching your videos is help to not be afraid when It comes.
I've just picked up a bobber project and the wiring is like a bird's nest but this video has broke it down nice a simple, I look at the wiring diagram and it's to busy looking for me to follow but this makes it look a lot easier thank you very much.
Good luck with the re-wiring!
Awesome video, saved my life. I have an 82 XV750 I need to fabricate a new wire system for.
Take it step by step and definitely start with video part 1 of 2!
Amazing going to help me wire my bike up today been putting it off for months
Very enlightened. Thank you very much.
Awesome video I’m trying to get my gpz750 up an running this is really helpful
Excellent!... very informative. Thank you :)
Actually, you didn't help me a little bit, you helped me a great deal. Thanks you so very much, keep up the good work.
I studied part 1 and 2 of starting ignition systems of motorcycle. It's very helpful to me. I'm a retired Warrant Officer 1 Sri Lanka Army Signals Corps. Now I'm a elderly person. Your explaining in this regard very keen interest to any person. God bless you. I'm Tharick.... Wish you a happy future...!
Great video, Mate!
Thanks so much! I'm wiring a 'bare bones' electrical system for a 1978 Yamaha XS750 Triple! Basically it ends up being identical to your bike, except my bike has 1 more cylinder than yours.
I have a xs triple aswell i dont understand everytime i get to key switch part sparks fly
I am completely new to this, wiring has scared me since the beginning, with your step by step, I’m slowly getting more familiar and confident in understanding! Thank you!!
Thank had the same thought myself. Still good video I still learned somethings from this, keep up the good work mate, bike was amazing you should have won something just for that....
very well explained. Thank you
Helped so much thank you!!!
Great step by step I am going to use this next bike I rebuild!
Super ! fantastic video
Thank you, extremely educational, thank you.
That is a detailed videos which helpful in wiring 👍👍
thank god i found this. thank you!!
Thank you 2014 softail knowing about ground from run start switch is gold.god bless your soul army core of engineers
Good job, thanks for explaining
Excellent. Very helpful.
You really made a wonderful job making these videos ! I learned a lot and it helps me with my build you are answering all my interrogations thank you very much keep going !
Thanks man I appreciate it
really good video
Great video
Very nice idea for producing a “blank diagram to draw on.”
Fabulous, because of this my xj900 is soon to run:)
Good explanation thanks
thank you and bless you. easy to understand. worth to sub
You are the best!
thanks again, hop to see more...
You mean headlights and stuff? That's the easy part. You will see that in my regular series.
Worth GOLD!
Thanks alot. I'll try fixing my Honda 600 f4i, it's been down for 2yrs checked by so many people.
It looses voltage 8volts to nothing from the icu when cranking.
Hey man I appreciate you I don't know how to work this phone hardly but I'd I really appreciate your videos I'm time to wire up a 1988 250
Thanks for video
Hi! Great videos:) helps me alot👍🏻 i have a question about rectifier. I bought a new aftermarkert rectifier and i wonder how i connect the cables when i just have the black, red and yellow cable? I use the same fusebox and try doing the same set up like you:)
That's what I explain exactly in the video. Aftermarket R/R' s only have three wires. The yellow is for the ignition switch. Red black positive negative. Just follow/listen to that part of the video.
Hi thanks for this! I'm cafe-ing my 81 virago 750 and am re-doing the wiring. Im wondering what kind of battery you went with? It looks like an 8 cell? I'd appreciate any info. I'm not really sure how many cold cranking amps I need.
A 12 Cell Life Lipo. But the brand doesn't exhist anymore. You can go for Antigravity that's a good brand. You will need 360cca. I tell everything about it in the starter problem solve video. Make sure to watch that.
hello @chiefpep which battery did you use? I want a lightweight smallest battery available, yours seen perfect for what I am looking for
Evo 12 cell Ballistic
Thank you 🙏
Hey great video I built a gpz600 into cafe racer built to harness followed everything you said everything works but I can't seem to get spark bike use to get spark before on the old harness where can I look thanks Jason
Measure the wires step by step starting with the alternator. Is the only way to find the fault...
Im going to re wire my starter setup (xv750) What size cables should i use to make sure that they are Big enough?
Peter Sahlberg 10 gauge. Or even 8 if you want.
Hi chief
Will this bare bones system do away with the side stand and clutch leaver safety system because I dont need them.
Many thanks
Merv
Yes, I left them both out too.
Ok if you have a bike A Kawasaki GPZ 600R that came without a wiring harness, one that had been cooped up so much that I had nothing to go on or no Patton to follow what do you do? terminals 5 at the bottom 5 at the top, but
Thanks and kindness regards Terry…..
The same as all the other questions below with different bikes. First find the wiring diagram. Then, just draw the wires like I did in this video. Pick a color which you like for each. If you want to make it easy, pick my colors.
This was a great explanation and Dan made an awesome job with the diagrams.i know that you work on a xv750 but its possible to use this as a base for a xv250?cause i got my hands on 1 and the wiring is a mess and needs to be reworked and cant find any bare bone for that model.
For sure!
which fuseblock did you get? the link in the description just directs to a general page, none of which really look right...
Motorbreath - Nathan It's the 6 circuit with negative bus. www.bluesea.com/products/5025/ST_Blade_Fuse_Block_-_6_Circuits_with_Negative_Bus_and_Cover
I have an 81 xv750 came in a lot of boxes... long story. I have assembled it... finally harness all hooked up, connect battery... nothing apart from one relay under the seat clicking. Dissapointed... I'll say! This has given me new hope.
What about the little block of diodes either in the headlight or (as mine are) under the seat, are they also no longer needed?
Where does the nuetral detect wire that is on the connector to the rectifier connect?
Yes. Ditch all the diodes if you follow my sceme. The neutral wire goes to the speedometer.
Nice 👍
this is great man ! so good for rookies. there aint that much content like this for us ;)
Hi there, I love your videos. They're very helpful. I was wondering what the thickness (16mm2 or 25mm2 or less?) of the ground wire and the 12V wire are, wich lead to the starter motor?
At 21:55 I explain the thicknesses. But, the ground wire and 12 Volts are way thicker. I guess 8 or 10 Gauge. But I can't be sure. Just choose nice and thick ones for those like 4mm.
Chiefpep Thanx for replying!
That's hilarious! Were you up all night? Holding the solenoid in your hand and repeatedly calling it a coil.
Really interesting videos, good job mate.
Do you have a conversion table for the wires sizes? I am from Belgium and, like you in Holland, I use the metric terms for the cables. Here, you’re talking about gauges, I know that is the imperial terms but I don’t know what 16g means in mm for exemple.
Thanks in advance if you can help me bro
Here you go! www.firemountaingems.com/resources/encyclobeadia/charts/6404
Love your videos. They have helped me with a lot of my questions and build ideas with my 81 virago build. I am having one issue, and I hope you can point me in the right direction. I was removing the starter to replace it because the gear was broken off into the case. After removing the shift lever and case, the shift mechanism pulled off of the shift cylinder (not sure what to call it). I've tried putting back into the right orientation several times thinkin I was putting it back wrong but, once it's put together, it will only shift into first and neutral. Is it because I have to put the case back together and fill it with fluids? I know some older bikes have a hydro lock system but I don't want to waste new fluids and have to dump it back out if that's not it. Just trying to save money and time. I've watched so many videos on UA-cam, especially yours, and you have a super firm grasp on a lot of Virago issues and workings. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Mike McDermott Thank you so much! Are you trying to shift it static? Because that won't work. You only can shift up further then second gear when you spin your wheel or shaft. Rather with the wheel on so you make big turns. Or roll the bike if you can't lift the wheel. The shafts and all won't find their way static... Have you found my video where I install the shift mechanism? You can pause the video and compare your installation. Just to make sure.
Thanks for getting back to me. I will definitely have to go back to that video and study it a little further. I will definitely try it out. The bike is looking fantastic. Keep making videos, you have a life long fan. Thanks again.
Great videos, very helpful. what type of ratchet crimpers do you use?
This type www.allekabels.nl/tang/98/1069091/tang-krimptang.html
Will the same principle work with a 1200 bandit I was told all japanese bikes have pretty much the same layout, there just seems to be a hell of a lot more wire's in my bandit n I'm confused
If it has no fuel injection; yes it's pretty much the same. And the basics are the same always.
@@chiefpepdesign ta
I tried you're method but im not doing something right, would you know where do find 2000 Yamaha xt225 wiring Diagram?
Yes, in the workshop manual. I think Haynes is the best
Hi, you install relays ?? Is necessary or just fuses are good ? Thanks !!
Felipe Iturra fuses. And later 1 blinker relais
Would this apply to an 08 Yamaha vstar 1100? I know virtually nothing electrical but need my harness to shrink asap! Was hoping this would be a decent set of guidelines to follow? Thanks for any help
Yes. Every motorbike works with the same components. The only difference is that your Vstar has fuel injection. That needs power to and I have to be honost that I never dove into that...
@@chiefpepdesign actually the 08' still has carbs, so just got a fuel pump! Thanks a ton for your videos an help, I'm gonna get to working asap!
awesome video this will help a lot lol i found a 1970 to 1980 first gen Honda Odyssey go cart atv and someone put a Yamaha xj 400 engine from the bike in it and lot of the wires aren't hooked up and the spark plug wires are cut and nothing is hooked to the cgi box and they made there own control box with the key and push buttons and fuses and switches and that but from the key both blue wire goes out of the box somewhere lol and an orange comes back into the box i'm guessing cause its to the start button so there's no spark at all its a mess
For you to wire it up properly! 👍
This is my first project Maxim 650, I e watched the video couple times and still it’s hard for me to work electrical stuff. Maybe if I get those diagrams will be easier. How can I get them please? 🙏🏼
I explain that in the video and the description.
Hi love the video. Really informative considering I don't know much when it comes to electricity. I was curious though, does it matter the brand or type of my regulator/rectifier? I have a 1981 xs400, but i don't know what I need. Can I just use one from the same bike as mine but a newer year? Sorry I'm just kind of lost here. Thanks.
I find that always hard to answer. What the thing does is make ac current to dc current. In a certain amount to charge the battery. Since a 1985 R/R doesn't work on a '81 XV I guess it comes pretty narrow. So I darn't tell...
Brad lay follow me on instagram, xs_1981, I am building my xs for a scrambler
I was wondering if you can do a video with fuel injection along with the bare wiring your information
Is great well put
I don't have a bike right now. Perhaps in the future I could do something like that.
Thanks ,But you never covered how to test cdi box. Do you have anytricks to check cdi. I'm getting continuty on some teminals.
No I'm sorry...
Great video - thanks Chief. I just bought a part finished VX750 cafe racer. Most mechanics and framework complete to a very high standard. I just have to do the wiring. I'm trying to decide between the wiring approach you outlined versus using a Motogadget mo.unit blue. Would the mo.unit simplify or complicate the wiring do you think?
No, it won't make it easier at all.
@@chiefpepdesign Thanks Chief, I'll save my hard earned money then :-)
Great Video, thankyou. However, that explains the component mystery, but i am still mystified on how the accessories like lights, etc, come into the mix and where they source their main power. Is it just a secondary positive line from the battery or are they sourced from the rectifier, or a junction block somewhere connected to the positive source?
You are 100% right and wondering exactly the right tings and in the right direction. I suggest you sit back, grab a beer and/or some popcorn and watcht this episode where all your answers will be given. And please watch it all the way so you don't accidentally miss a part. ua-cam.com/video/uUIFEQswCOM/v-deo.html
Where does the black/white stripe wire for the kick stand relay go?
I don't know. You would have to follow the original wire scheme. I don't have that handy. You can act the sidestandswitch the same as the killswitch. It just cuts off power. It's nothing special.
Thanks
You are a good instructor now when you Gunnar come and fix my klr 250. Lol
You don't wanna know how many of these requests I had! 😅
Hey Chief! thanks for your videos! i just discovered your channel as I'm in the process of rewiring my XV750 from 1982. any chance you could share the link to the PDF document?
Much appreciated! cheers!
In the discription
The link is dead for me :( does it work for you?
Great series of vids. Question: On Kickstarter bikes - instead of a battery - if you use a Battery Eliminator - is it just a matter of direct swap of batter for Eliminator? Meaning: everything stays the same wiring wise? Thanks.
I am sorry. I have no experience with this...
Hi, I tried to download the pdf and looks like is no available , can you please share it with me?
No sorry. Best is just to pause the video. But did you registrate yourself to the forum? Otherwise it doesn't work.
Did you use the stock regulator rectifier with your new lithium-ion battery?
Yes. Works great
What is the difference between wiring a tci vs a cdi? I am re-wiring a 93' xv1100 that came with a cdi. The wiring on this bike is complete cobb-job.
All components test out ok thanks to your first bare bones video. I Re-grounded frame, starter, etc. with thick wire as suggested. I need to know how to go from the small wire on the 3post solenoid to the starter relay if even needed? The cdi, to the coils, kill switch, start switch, etc.. I am using a Toggle switch instead of a keyed ignition. Any advise could save this bikes life. cheers!
Should be the same... I can't make more out of it sorry... 😔
When will you come out w/video 3 on the wiring? Ie:wire harness, horn... the relays (all 4) how do you check if they are good or not? When starting, it kicks out b4 engaging... I’m thinking starter relay???🥴 plz help!
I have five more video's. Please check my channel. Here is part one of the sequence: ua-cam.com/video/JuuIr4zOgoM/v-deo.html
Thank you for your reply & your videos!!!😊 we will anxiously await more...👍😁
@@sherriwaymire7435 but all the video's are online? Future video's will be about other bikes.
@@chiefpepdesign that’s ok, that’s where we watch them.😉
Hello, do you have the ignition connection diagram of my yamaha virago xv 535 motorcycle? My motorcycle turns on from the ignition switch, but does not turn off. Even if I turn the key off, the motorcycle continues to run. There is an error in the link. Can you help?
You need a diagram which can be found in any workshop manual.
@@chiefpepdesign It opens with the key. But it doesn't cut the power back. It won't turn off even if I remove the key It is closed with the start/stop button on the handlebar. I couldn't find the schematic, I don't know. I cannot use my motorcycle 🤔🙂
@@emrahsahan5287 I have made these video tutorials to help people with these problems. There isn't more I can do. Buy a workshop manual for the diagrams.
thanks alot alot
I wired my 79 xs1100 like this and still can't get it to start it seems like its not getting enough power to crank starter and hints on what it mite be
Pay good attention at this video ua-cam.com/video/FJs1IAaEWVo/v-deo.html start at 5 minutes and listen carefully.
Very well
Can bad ground and or bad cdi cause bogging similar to blocked jets ?
Yes it could.
Great video! I didn't see you hook up a relay for the starter solenoid. The factory harness includes one. Is this unnecessary or did I just miss it in the video?
No absolutely not. That's how you get rid of 32 wires....
so instead of the starter button could i have a 3 way key switch so i can turn over my bike like you do with a car? just turn key
Offcourse you can! Then the last turn of the starterkey switch would be exactly the same as pressing a button. It's just a ground cable that is interupted. It needs somebody or something that puts those wires together. Like an on and off switch. Closed/open line as I tried to explain at 17:42 but also a few other times in this video like the kill switch part at 14:42.
@@chiefpepdesign sweet i imagined so since, like u say, its just a switch. thank you!
