Brother, I just wanted to thank you and let you know that I'm gonna go out tomorrow and wire up my 81 xv750 because of how easy you made all this. Thank you so much! It's been sitting in my garage for years because I was too scared to start taking out the 42 year old harness but now , I'm gonna get that fiery woman roadworthy!
ok, so I have a fuse block but I'm confused as to where I should attach the brown wire from the main switch(not the tap to the regulator/rectifier) onto the fuse block...to clarify, I do not know whether to connect it at the +,-, or to the side positive output terminals, or the ground input terminals... I think 90% of everything else is correct with uncertainty resting in the fuseblock connections and whether I have the two wires connecting the starter and solenoid attached the proper wires "the aftermarket solenoid uses two completely different colored wires than the stock wires. Any further help you can give me or if you explained it in the videos and I missed it maybe some time stamps? Thanks!

Hi love the video. Really informative considering I don't know much when it comes to electricity. I was curious though, does it matter the brand or type of my regulator/rectifier? I have a 1981 xs400, but i don't know what I need. Can I just use one from the same bike as mine but a newer year? Sorry I'm just kind of lost here. Thanks.
I find that always hard to answer. What the thing does is make ac current to dc current. In a certain amount to charge the battery. Since a 1985 R/R doesn't work on a '81 XV I guess it comes pretty narrow. So I darn't tell...
Love your videos. They have helped me with a lot of my questions and build ideas with my 81 virago build. I am having one issue, and I hope you can point me in the right direction. I was removing the starter to replace it because the gear was broken off into the case. After removing the shift lever and case, the shift mechanism pulled off of the shift cylinder (not sure what to call it). I've tried putting back into the right orientation several times thinkin I was putting it back wrong but, once it's put together, it will only shift into first and neutral. Is it because I have to put the case back together and fill it with fluids? I know some older bikes have a hydro lock system but I don't want to waste new fluids and have to dump it back out if that's not it. Just trying to save money and time. I've watched so many videos on UA-cam, especially yours, and you have a super firm grasp on a lot of Virago issues and workings. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Mike McDermott Thank you so much! Are you trying to shift it static? Because that won't work. You only can shift up further then second gear when you spin your wheel or shaft. Rather with the wheel on so you make big turns. Or roll the bike if you can't lift the wheel. The shafts and all won't find their way static... Have you found my video where I install the shift mechanism? You can pause the video and compare your installation. Just to make sure.
Thanks for getting back to me. I will definitely have to go back to that video and study it a little further. I will definitely try it out. The bike is looking fantastic. Keep making videos, you have a life long fan. Thanks again.
This is my first project Maxim 650, I e watched the video couple times and still it’s hard for me to work electrical stuff. Maybe if I get those diagrams will be easier. How can I get them please? 🙏🏼
I don't know. You would have to follow the original wire scheme. I don't have that handy. You can act the sidestandswitch the same as the killswitch. It just cuts off power. It's nothing special.
Hi Chief Sorry to keep asking questions , i'm really enjoying watching all your videos. i cant get the wire diagrams you are using , i don't think the site is working where you got them from and notice other people are having trouble to. just wondering if you can include them as i don't have a Yamaha, i have a Honda ST1100 and i am trying to follow you by matching like for like but without your diagrams i'm having a bit of trouble keeping up. Merv
You first have to create an account. Then wait untill it's made. Then you need to log in and you can find them. I don't share the diagram. Besides that, it's for a XV 750 so you will not be able to use them for your Pan European. But the basics are the same. Most people pause the video and make a screendump. That's easy to do.
@@mervshepherd2459 on the right upper part of your keyboard you find the key 'screenshot'. Then the computer makes a picture of your screen. Then you can 'paste' it in any program you like as a picture.
you don't used a R/R for your lithium battery diferent right? I got my antigravity lithium battery in my project xv920 1982 and I don't know if I can use my original R/R or I need to buy a new one.
@@chiefpepdesign Thank you so much, I was concerned because there is a sticker that said "Do not use this battery in pre 1990s motorcycles without updating your Voltage Regulator" but I see that your bike don't use a new one.
Great video - thanks Chief. I just bought a part finished VX750 cafe racer. Most mechanics and framework complete to a very high standard. I just have to do the wiring. I'm trying to decide between the wiring approach you outlined versus using a Motogadget mo.unit blue. Would the mo.unit simplify or complicate the wiring do you think?
Offcourse you can! Then the last turn of the starterkey switch would be exactly the same as pressing a button. It's just a ground cable that is interupted. It needs somebody or something that puts those wires together. Like an on and off switch. Closed/open line as I tried to explain at 17:42 but also a few other times in this video like the kill switch part at 14:42.
Hi thanks for this! I'm cafe-ing my 81 virago 750 and am re-doing the wiring. Im wondering what kind of battery you went with? It looks like an 8 cell? I'd appreciate any info. I'm not really sure how many cold cranking amps I need.
A 12 Cell Life Lipo. But the brand doesn't exhist anymore. You can go for Antigravity that's a good brand. You will need 360cca. I tell everything about it in the starter problem solve video. Make sure to watch that.
I've placed the link and mentioned in the videos how to get them. They are not mine so... But it's just a matter of erasing most of them from the original diagram in the workshop manual.
Would this apply to an 08 Yamaha vstar 1100? I know virtually nothing electrical but need my harness to shrink asap! Was hoping this would be a decent set of guidelines to follow? Thanks for any help
Yes. Every motorbike works with the same components. The only difference is that your Vstar has fuel injection. That needs power to and I have to be honost that I never dove into that...
Hey chiefpep, can I get the wiring diagram please.? When I followed your link in the description, the website says I don't have permission to see the files
Hi there, I love your videos. They're very helpful. I was wondering what the thickness (16mm2 or 25mm2 or less?) of the ground wire and the 12V wire are, wich lead to the starter motor?
At 21:55 I explain the thicknesses. But, the ground wire and 12 Volts are way thicker. I guess 8 or 10 Gauge. But I can't be sure. Just choose nice and thick ones for those like 4mm.
This was a great explanation and Dan made an awesome job with the diagrams.i know that you work on a xv750 but its possible to use this as a base for a xv250?cause i got my hands on 1 and the wiring is a mess and needs to be reworked and cant find any bare bone for that model.
I wired my 79 xs1100 like this and still can't get it to start it seems like its not getting enough power to crank starter and hints on what it mite be
Really interesting videos, good job mate. Do you have a conversion table for the wires sizes? I am from Belgium and, like you in Holland, I use the metric terms for the cables. Here, you’re talking about gauges, I know that is the imperial terms but I don’t know what 16g means in mm for exemple. Thanks in advance if you can help me bro
Should there be current in the red white wire from the solinoid? I am wiring mine and I think the solinoid is faulty as there is no power on that red white wire.
I have tested the solinoid as you did and it seems ok. But when I wire it in should I get current on the red/white wire because I don't get anything. And when I hit the starter I get nothing.

I am using a Toggle switch instead of a keyed ignition. Any advise could save this bikes life. cheers!
Should be the same... I can't make more out of it sorry... 😔
Thanks ,But you never covered how to test cdi box. Do you have anytricks to check cdi. I'm getting continuty on some teminals.
No I'm sorry...
You are the best!
very well explained. Thank you
Hi love the video.
Brad lay follow me on instagram, xs_1981, I am building my xs for a scrambler
I explain that in the video and the description.
Where does the black/white stripe wire for the kick stand relay go?
I don't know. You would have to follow the original wire scheme. I don't have that handy. You can act the sidestandswitch the same as the killswitch. It just cuts off power. It's nothing special.
You are a good instructor now when you Gunnar come and fix my klr 250. Lol
You don't wanna know how many of these requests I had! 😅
Worth GOLD!
Hi Chief
Sorry to keep asking questions , i'm really enjoying watching all your videos.
i cant get the wire diagrams you are using , i don't think the site is working where you got them from and notice other people are having trouble to. just wondering if you can include them as i don't have a Yamaha, i have a Honda ST1100 and i am trying to follow you by matching like for like but without your diagrams i'm having a bit of trouble keeping up.
Merv
You first have to create an account. Then wait untill it's made. Then you need to log in and you can find them. I don't share the diagram. Besides that, it's for a XV 750 so you will not be able to use them for your Pan European. But the basics are the same. Most people pause the video and make a screendump. That's easy to do.
@@chiefpepdesign never herd of a screen dump
how do you go about doing it
@@mervshepherd2459 on the right upper part of your keyboard you find the key 'screenshot'. Then the computer makes a picture of your screen. Then you can 'paste' it in any program you like as a picture.
Did you use the stock regulator rectifier with your new lithium-ion battery?
Yes. Works great
you don't used a R/R for your lithium battery diferent right? I got my antigravity lithium battery in my project xv920 1982 and I don't know if I can use my original R/R or I need to buy a new one.
Original is no problem at all!
@@chiefpepdesign Thank you so much, I was concerned because there is a sticker that said "Do not use this battery in pre 1990s motorcycles without updating your Voltage Regulator"
but I see that your bike don't use a new one.
Hi chief
Will this bare bones system do away with the side stand and clutch leaver safety system because I dont need them.
Many thanks
Merv
Yes, I left them both out too.
No, it won't make it easier at all.
@@chiefpepdesign Thanks Chief, I'll save my hard earned money then :-)
Nice 👍
Excellent!... very informative. Thank you :)
Hi, I tried to download the pdf and looks like is no available , can you please share it with me?
No sorry. Best is just to pause the video. But did you registrate yourself to the forum? Otherwise it doesn't work.
Is this the whole schematic for the bare bones setup?
Yes it is
Amazing Chiefpep , you’re very helpful 🙌🏻
Very helpful but what did you do with all of your relays?
Didn't use any op them. You don't need them. Only the turnsignal relais. But I use the Kellerman relais.
Are you serious? So using this method I dont need any relays other than turn signals
@@VeneerSlinger indeed. Just follow the 'programme' step by step. It get's rid of 38 wires and all of the relays. That's why it's called barebones
Thank you I've been kicking myself in the ass since the first time I watched this video.
That's an aftermarket tci correct? Which one are you using?
so instead of the starter button could i have a 3 way key switch so i can turn over my bike like you do with a car? just turn key
@@chiefpepdesign sweet i imagined so since, like u say, its just a switch. thank you!
Could you please send me diagrams which use in this video.
@@chiefpepdesign actually the 08' still has carbs, so just got a fuel pump! Thanks a ton for your videos an help, I'm gonna get to working asap!
Hey chiefpep, can I get the wiring diagram please.?
When I followed your link in the description, the website says I don't have permission to see the files
Yes you have but first need to register.

Chiefpep Thanx for replying!
This was a great explanation and Dan made an awesome job with the diagrams.i know that you work on a xv750 but its possible to use this as a base for a xv250?cause i got my hands on 1 and the wiring is a mess and needs to be reworked and cant find any bare bone for that model.
For sure!
I wired my 79 xs1100 like this and still can't get it to start it seems like its not getting enough power to crank starter and hints on what it mite be
Pay good attention at this video ua-cam.com/video/FJs1IAaEWVo/v-deo.html start at 5 minutes and listen carefully.
Did you order the fuse block from the blue sea website?
Rchard Salie No at a local watershop website. An official dealer of the brand.
Do you have a website of the shop? Having problems finding a website in the Netherlands to buy the Fuse Block. I Live in the Netherlands :)
Rchard Salie offcourse: Landreiziger shop. Succes!
Btw. I see it's a car/modification shop. But watersport dealers often have them as well
Dank je wel. Leuke en interessante kanaal leer veel :-)
thank god i found this. thank you!!
Great video
Really interesting videos, good job mate.
Do you have a conversion table for the wires sizes? I am from Belgium and, like you in Holland, I use the metric terms for the cables. Here, you’re talking about gauges, I know that is the imperial terms but I don’t know what 16g means in mm for exemple.
Thanks in advance if you can help me bro

Great step by step I am going to use this next bike I rebuild!
Hi. is it possible to use one motorcycle electricity to another one?
Offcourse. A wire is a wire 😊
Should there be current in the red white wire from the solinoid? I am wiring mine and I think the solinoid is faulty as there is no power on that red white wire.
You can check the solenoid stand alone. See my first wire video for that
I have tested the solinoid as you did and it seems ok. But when I wire it in should I get current on the red/white wire because I don't get anything. And when I hit the starter I get nothing.
@@Shed_Heeran Follow above video from 12:30 Otherwise I am trying to explain in text what I am saying in de the video. That doesn't feel logical. I made these video's because I get these questions so often. I am sorry I can not help you in another way.
Hi, thanks for the replies. I found d the fault my ignition switch doesnt take ground from the handlebars it has it's own ground. I was being stupid and hadn't wired that in. Keep up the great work on the vids. They are seriously helpful
@@Shed_Heeran I thought and hoped you would find out with a little help of the vids. By figuring it out by yourself you will get better and better in finding flaws. Good luck!
Will the same principle work with a 1200 bandit I was told all japanese bikes have pretty much the same layout, there just seems to be a hell of a lot more wire's in my bandit n I'm confused
If it has no fuel injection; yes it's pretty much the same. And the basics are the same always.

Great video! I didn't see you hook up a relay for the starter solenoid. The factory harness includes one. Is this unnecessary or did I just miss it in the video?
No absolutely not. That's how you get rid of 32 wires....
Helped so much thank you!!!
Hi, you install relays ?? Is necessary or just fuses are good ? Thanks !!
Felipe Iturra fuses. And later 1 blinker relais
Hello chiefpep your videos are excellent I just discover your channel, I am building my virago xv750 cafe with your videos, I will use the stock ignition switch it has a blue cable, what is the function of it? thank you
Ricardo Gonzalez Nuñez That will be parking light. If you don't use it, leave it. Test the other two by making a 'loom' with your voltmeter and switching it on and off to secure yourself you are using the right wires.
ok I see, thank you for your reply!
