The track itself isn't on Sol Niger Within, but there certainly are major influences present in this song. I hope Fredrik does another Special Defects album!
Luke Hultgren influenced by the Most underrated musician, Allan Holdsworth who sadly died broke, Eddie Van Halen was influenced by Holdsworth and even played with him in 85' and was devoured whole by Holdsworth lol I wish EVH could have paid for his funeral. Whatevs, and the world keeps turning.
I don't see the problem with how similar this sounds to Holdsworth material. After all, when you are learning any musical genre, it's necessary to make your own works in the style of others. Look at classical composers for example and see how they learned. Do you think that they just sprout forth with masterpieces like Clair de Lune without having learned other masters works? Holdsworth is a master, he deserves to be studied rigorously. I'm tired of Eric Clapton clones, give me Allan and Fredrik
@BooBobly So hard that to date nobody has ever genuinely done so. The very best examples are just providing a likeness and no more. Allan was a one off with his own chord and scale system, and he took the knowledge of that with him to the next world. We can only stand and marvel at what he created.
I don't think most people care either. I think most people who make a big deal out of it are just desperate to show other people that they know who Houldsworth is.
You broke the cipher! Nine years ago, Mr @z s, by imagining the lead guitar sounds coming out of Fred's mouth you figured out that Fredrik Thordendal's solos on Secrets of the Unknown demo were an ALIEN LANGUAGE!!!! Fredrik was giving us clues, or using subliminal messages through the lead lines that made you think about the sound coming from his mouth. The language of Thordendal's guitar string worshiping species, from the planet... uh, I don't know some far off alien planet, or some exotic moon somewhere. Fred comes from a species who speak with their guitars, he's actually considered a shitty speaker by his fellow aliens standards, he sucks at guitar compared to them, they'd blow you the fuck away if you ever heard their great-and-poweful species' equivalent of say, Buckethead. I know this whole thing i'm doing here is not that funny but I wanted to keep it going more, I just ran out of ideas so I can't. I'm baked and sleep deprived, that's my excuse.
I was gonna say that on Fredrik's home planet they grow another guitar string every decade or so, and fred is still a youngun, and he's a lady, on his planet. Lol IDK, I was also gonna ask if in the 9 years since you discovered the Thordendal alien conspiracy by OPing this comment if aliens had contacted you and like, you know, probed you with a guitar... anally?
@@williamcozart8158 bruh that comment was from like 9 years ago. Im sure I was high then but i forgot this track existed until now. Thanks for the reminder.
Fredrik would be a fool not to do another solo album! This may be just a demo, but imagine more of this gold meticulously written out for a full album!
Allan Holdsworth and Fredrik Thordendal needs to do a collab together, it'd be out of this world For those who'd doubt, i know it accounts for nothing, but i once saw on Ron Jarzombek's site a pic of him(Ron) along with Allan I know it could turn to reality AND IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN!
i love that this video is bringing together all the fusion/metal nerds, and lacks the negativity and ignorance that we all know is so rampant on youtube. thumbs up to all you guys!
Most of this (notes and sound) sound like it was inspired by Holdsworth's Metal Fatigue-are prog rock. We all know (from FT himself, that AH is a major influence, in terms of style - more than a coincidental nod... Its great of course, but frankly, I miss the implied chaos of SNW - which was mind-blowing... This just seems like Frederik phoning in a circa 90's prog album...
Theres been a few times in my life where music came out, and no one ever matched it again. Fred Thordendal's solo career is like that, even Meshuggah somehow pales in comparison. I cant name a single of the big "progressive metal" bands on tour right now who take you this far outside of planet earth. Im referring to bands like Periphery, Born of OSiris, etc not classic prog acts that are still going
This is just one reason why I love the metal scene, the people aren't so closeminded and make music they like, not music that follows the rules. There are no rules.
@EB1089 Yeah I read in Guitar World (i think it was) of an interview with him that he said he was brought up with jazz because his dad listened to it. A lot of people try to over analyze Meshuggah's music by saying they use weird meters and stuff but really their music isn't exactly "musical". They really break the rules of music and do their own thing, its just crazy how it all works out in the end. In my opinion that is true uniqueness, where most bands really suffer from copycat techniques
@Purkinje90 Actually, Fredrik Thordendal is working on a new solo album. If you search for Fredrik Thordendal on youtube, you will find a channel that has this name : it is his. You'll see that he's in the recording process. What a good news ! Is'nt it ?
@mvunit3 Lucky for you, and everyone else, he is releasing another solo album! He's recording it right now. I can't wait!!!!!! It can't get here soon enough.
+Nightmaroid I'd also say that Fredrik tends to be a bit more "polished" in his writing, if that makes sense. As in Allan tends to go really crazy for extended periods of time, seemingly leaving all boundaries behind, which is great in and of itself but with Fredrik's writing I think it fits better into whatever overall concept a song might have. I found a couple guys here and there emulating his style and felt like this about some of them. It's a bit like Allan was the pioneer, the guy who had the ideas and went to new places and now others pick that up and keep refining it.
luketube you should listen to Allan Holdsworth's song "Low Levels, High Stakes" his solo is very "in" the lines, very emotional and showcasing how much he really did know about theory. I feel when Allan would play "out" he was really speaking his own language at that point, like real jazz musicians;) RIP the Master. Thordendal is my all time Holdsworth influenced guitar player besides Nico Stufano. But No one has brought the Heavy like Meshuggah
This is really nicely done. Please continue the legacy (side project?) with some great guys like Anthony Crawford, Skulli or Jimmy Johnson and Husband, Coliaiuta or Wackerman.
DAMN cool indeed, one of the best live as well with Meshuggah. Anyone heard the solo album by Tosin Abasi? He calls himself Animals as Leaders, pretty awesome stuff
@mvunit3 No problem, always glad to turn a fellow fan onto good music, new artists, etc. I think he is recording it with 2 different drummers as well. Dirk Verbeuren from Soilwork and I wanna say Morgan Agren again too. I may be wrong, but I think that's right. You can actually read some studio updates from Verbeuren somewhere (google it), where he talks about how he and Fredrik jammed out for hours, just doing improv drum patterns for Fredrik to play on top of. Should be badass. Can't wait!
Not true, they can feel it vibrationally through their hands and body. I have played guitar for deaf people and have seen them smile ear to ear when they placed their hands on my acoustic guitar and felt it. Badass shit man!
yeah, I mean I'm sure he's studied holdsworth's work extensively. Also holdsworth openly describes the sorts of scales and chords he prefers, and I bet fredrik understands exactly how to recreate his technique. at the same time I find it strange that sometimes fredrik has incredibly simplistic solos, that are like 1 or two notes repeated (especially live) despite that, they still work with meshuggah stuff hehe.
@suspect157 Chris Poland is no different. He was also hugely influenced by Holdsworth. Chris is an amazing musician when it comes to guitar, especially jazz fusion guitar. So if a guy like Chris Poland with such a distinctive style tone and diversity can't understand theory, I understand why someone equally talented ( like Fredrik ) by all rights would not be able to either. His ears make the sense he is a learner by ear, as am I, as is chris poland. It's a wonderful gift really.
@needlearmor Hell yeah! War Damn Eagle right back at ya! I can't believe theres another Auburn guy that likes Fredrik. My all time favorite band is Meshuggah hands down, and there's not even close 2nd. You dont find many people with such good music taste down on the Plains. Its mostly crappy radio rock and country. Cam 4 Heisman ;-)
@LokiLasher hey, you are no poser at all no one's saying that! Yngwie isn't a bad word either, but in this era, using Yng, is like....like using the word Thou, hahaha...very dated and old...I'm glad you're trying to expand your view and hopefully, leave those old fellas in the back part of our guitar music museum, hehehe....Some Names you'd love to check are Greg Howe, Guthrie Govan, Fabrizio Leo, Prashant Aswani...fusion is today's standard pretty much...cheers! The track itself isn't on Sol Niger Within, but there certainly are major influences present in this song.
I hope Fredrik does another Special Defects album!
He’s now built a studio and he’s working on a new solo album.
What's so amazing is that fredrik is so consistent in the quality of his music. He is such a talented guitarist!
that face is just the perfect accompaniment for this
It's a classic Meshuggah face, lol. You see their singer do it all the time on stage too :D
schpleeb it’s like the pained look of being possessed haha
Lol 👍👍😂
🗿
fredrik totally nailed the holdsworth tone.. awesome!
Arguably one of the greatest and underrated musicians of our time... Thank you so very much for this upload.
Peace..

Literally one of his biggest influences lol
Incredible! Fredrik has a very unique style. Really good guitarist as musician.
this is a stunning piece of music, fred's solo work should be made a bigger deal of!
I mean😅he is tho
@@zakgrigerek1530no BIGGER lol
i just like to imagine that the sound of the lead guitar is coming from his mouth in the photo
considering he used a frequently used a midi breath controller it basically was

Thanks for reading.
@@williamcozart8158 bruh that comment was from like 9 years ago. Im sure I was high then but i forgot this track existed until now. Thanks for the reminder.
Fredrik is definitely a Holdsworth and and a fusion influenced guitar player for sure ....sounds fantastic!
On the picture he looks exactly like Terry Gilliam from Monty Pythons.
Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!
Fredrik used to have a pretty amazing tone back in the days, kinda miss it.
I love his solos
that unknown was the living Legend Allan Holdsworth 💪
+jumborat12 Was just going to post a comment to this effect, but you beat me to the punch. :)
Allan Holdsworth abducted by aliens = Fredrik thordendal
LOL Alien Holdsworth!!
Still a legend, not living anymore though...
Maybe look up "Zarabeth" from the album "Wardenclyffe Tower".
The ending melody is clearly from Tathagata, the final part of Sol Niger Within. Don't know if anyone said this already though.
one of the best guitar tones ever. perfection
it would be cool to listen this man and holdsworth on a fantastic jam
he solos beautifully
some of his solos in meshugahh kinda sound metal and jazzy. and its awesome
Fredrik would be a fool not to do another solo album! This may be just a demo, but imagine more of this gold meticulously written out for a full album!
Ive been waiting almost 10 years to hear this... !!!this is great, awesome chords, holdsworth infuence FO SHO
That's some smooth joyriding music.
This sounds like a Mats/Morgan piece with Fredrik shreddin' the 8 string! Beautiful brutality!!
Allan Holdsworth and Fredrik Thordendal needs to do a collab together, it'd be out of this world

Update: listening to it again since it's so eargasm inducing... Even the drum parts sounds like Chad Wackerman haha
Chris Pouliot, Those Drums sound Wackermanish to me as well.
Chris Pouliot Allan Holdsworth is one of Frederik's influences so that would be cool.
Now it's not possible... :(
Rest in Peace Allan Holdsworth
It's a damn shame it never will now. Fredrik has one hell of a tasteful lead voice, and really carries on the legacy.
Great playing
This was the sound of the late 70's
Fan of Allan Holdsworth
Try to find the song 4.15 Bradford Executive, I think its on the Album called "SAND" by ALLAN HOLDSWORTH
i love that this video is bringing together all the fusion/metal nerds, and lacks the negativity and ignorance that we all know is so rampant on youtube. thumbs up to all you guys!
Love this sound absolutly Holdworth influence truely magic

awesome song, so atmospheric and epic
The beauty of this Fusional Endeavor never ceases to amaze me, every time I Freaking HEAR IT!
Happy Birthday! Gratulerer med dagen Fredrik! :)
im loving this thordendal fusion work,, its very holdsworth ,bill connors esque....im loving the fuck out of this
this is effing amazing
Never heard this tune before... It is really really Holdsworth-ish, even the synth sounds. Cool.
Excellent post
Reminds me of snes era JRPG game soundtracks. Excellent stuff.
Totally agree - sure it sounds like him but dude had his thing and it is most certainly beautiful
amazing! still waiting to hear something from marten?
This kicks ass!! I'm mad I didn't discover this sooner! \m/

You can really hear that Fredrik is inspired by Allan Holdsworth in this one
I loved ChimpSpanner!! Great melodies and skill. Thanks for the referral friend
Can it get any better? I just can't stop listening to it over and over again. This is what I'd call complete musicianship...

Holdsworthy! I actually like this a little more too... My apologies Allan...
+luketube Me too! Has this "Holdsworth's evil twin from hell" vibe I just can't get enough. Fredrik's so much more than a riff writer and performer.

9:06 Sublevels
Hahaha yes!
Which again is from the outro of Allan Holdsworth's Material Real!
Oskar Oh really?! Damn, I'm searching it right now!
not only Sublevels and this...that's his signature melody :D
It also sounds like Tathagata (the ending of Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects' Sol Niger Within album).

This guy is amazing. I wish I knew what this was from.
Amazing demo. Ending kind of sounds like the ending of Sub Levels from Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve.
The chord sequence is exactly the same used in that song. Makes me remember to the ending of Allan Holdsworth's "Material Real".
