Good evening from Brittany; That's just to inform you that I've finished my own pond with a cascade this week. I've found (of course) a lot of inspiration from your excellent and beautiful work; Yesterday, i've tested the cascade; it looks good and nice; My daughter Maïwenn is so happy and she told me to to thank you I need for this pond a pump and a filter because Maï wants to see fishes in next april (3 maxi); For my part, I started to put aquatics and edges plants have a good continuation!
OMG having just finished my own pond did I come across this video. What we built is so identical it is spooky. I didn't do videos but I did take numerous photos so I will try to do a photo/vid to show you. Excellent work and excellent video.
hi pondguru, absolutely superb been looking and looking for an above pond for the house we rent in as we cant build a brick one as if owner sells we cant remove this is spot on within my capabilities as a di wyer {sorry pet had to put that in } as always explained and videoed superbly cant wait to show the wife been on to me for ages to build one ,keep up the work what a job bet it feels you never work a day in your life you are so lucky cant wait for the update with the fish in ,ian
If I am passing I will get an update but that will be in the Spring. Glad you found the video useful and are looking to build something similar. I'm not sure about it not feeling like I do a days work - getting wet and cold every day for 6 months of the year soon gets wearing - lol. I put my back out on the first day of this build and had to do the rest in pain. Its either do that or don't get paid which is the main drawback of working for yourself - what a bummer.
Nice video, very informative. I enjoy watching someone explain what they are doing, at least someone who actually knows what they are talking about. So many videos are from folks who haven't a clue. I don't even "have" an aquarium or pond but I find it interesting how you construct them, each installation being custom to the surroundings. Again, thanks for some great videos. peace
I'm new to pond ownership and looking to make improvements to my raised pond. I really enjoyed your explanations. Your attention to detail and methodical approach clearly led to a great finished result. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Beautiful work! To hide the jubilee clips (and protect small hands from cuts), wrap them with a strip of the Firestone liner 4" wide and 8" long, and secure with a black nylon zip-tie on either end around the tube. You can remove them by snipping the zip-ties. And the rubber strips are reusable. Cheers!
Hello, I've just seen your last video about the raised wooden pond. il feel really impressed by your skillness. I listened to your explanations and, as far as possible, tried to understand them (I'm not from England). This pond looks like a mirror and, sure, will be very appreciated by his owner. You are an artist!
Beautiful, well thought out, quality work! Especially liked the way you incorporated leftover materials into the new build. I'm sure your clients appreciated that, as well! Also, you are very good at explaining your reasoning and techniques and materials used. Very good video! Cheers from the US!
Yes we normally keep bricks on the folds while the pond is filling and that allows the water to press them down, than the bricks can be removed. Tension on the upright folds can keep them flat, no worries. Its just trial and error and if you're not used to laying liner you may need to drain and refill to get it right. We never glue the liner but it can be done if the liner is clean and dry.
I really like your videos. Your attention to detail is exemplary. I assume - because I live in Arizona - that your insulation of the above deck pond framing is to account for the cooler temperatures. Interestingly, the subsurface in Arizona encourages a minimal depth of 4 feet in order to benefit from the soil - caliche - in moderating the extreme temperature changes over a 24hr period. I will look closer at insulation as many pond owners loose fish here assuming the day time highs are year round, which they are not. I am a backyard enthusiast only, but your videos are top shelf!
+Jim Cameron Thanks very much for enjoying the videos. Yes the insulation prevents wild swings in temperature as raised ponds can get very cold in winter or very warm in summer. In the UK our days can be very warm and nights can be cold much like Arizona so if we can level out those extremes it is much better for the fish. Ultimately a large volume of water will be less subjected to fluctuations than a small body of water but insulating definitely helps.
What a wonderful idea for a pond!! I really like the inlay look. This gives me the idea for a wrap around pond for my deck. Thank you for posting! T. Reid
Great video, you explained it really well, I'm looking at building almost exactly the same pond as in your video accept it won't be on top of decking. Really impressed that 2 foot high walls made of wood are strong enough to support that volume of water. I'm planning my pond same as yours but 2.4 x 1.4 x 1.2 meters deep and you've just given me some great ideas, Thanks :)
Brilliant videos and very informative. I'm almost ready to tackle my own pond restoration project. It needs a new underlay and liner, along with a pump and filter. I've decided to use the Auto Cleaning Pressurised Pond Filter PFC-75000 With Built-In 55w from ALL POND SOLUTIONS. Might even have a bash at making my own gravity shower. Keep up the good work and take care. Cheers, John
I've done a few jobs in Jesmond. This one was just over the river at Gateshead. Plants don't need any oxygenation in the pond but if you intend to have fish in there too it would be beneficial for them to have water movement. A pump and filter which runs 24/7 is always better than a temporary fountain so if there's any way of getting electricity to the pond it would be advantageous. Most solar fountains / pumps are very unreliable just like the English 'summer'. Thanks for the sub, man.
That sounds like a very practical way of covering them up. I'd honestly never thought of doing that but maybe there are situations where it would be required so that's a great tip, thanks, man.
That´s neat I thought the decking was hardwood (bangkiri or Massaranduba) but it looks like its pine with grooves. I assume you treat it with some sort of oil to get that brown color. Looks really good.
Hi, lady with the small pond. Thanks to your advise my son is now building me a 3x3x3 metre pond the same as your raised decking koi pond .what a result , thank you so much.

No worries. Provided the carpet is acrylic (not natural fibres) it should be OK but if it is hessian backed or woolen you may have a problem with it rotting and producing gas which can cause the pond liner in the base to rise up like a bubble. Seen this on a few occasions when the gas has nowhere to go. One was raised above water level in a huge bubble and looked awesome. luckily it had been put in by someone else, lol Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.
If they are left running over the winter they should not freeze but if they are to be turned off it's always best to drain them of water to prevent any ice damage,
Thank you. I'm glad you have used some of the information in my videos to make your pond. It is good that the cascade works well as that is sometimes the most difficult part to get right. Best wishes, Richard
So I've been watching your videos for hours over the last few days, I love this one really want to do it myself, shame your in Newcastle els I'd have you come to bristol can't fault your designs and expertise
Provided there is a current in the water there will be decent gaseous exchange between water and atmosphere. The outlet can be twisted to create a visible current on the water surface if desired but one of the main purposes of this pool was to have a reflection of the sky which would be ruined by surface movement.
Wow, you are amazing. Well talented. Normally I just watch you're metal detecting video's, but these video's are also amazing. Great job keep up the good work.
If I ever have enough money to get a bigger house and land I would ask you to build me a pond. As you do a great job. I've followed you on UA-cam for ages and am always impressed. I even re watch videos
Looks great! I’m hoping to build a much smaller raised pond than this, approx 2m x 1m x 70cm deep. How long would you expect a structure like this to last?
Putting the sleepers on a concrete foundation just below ground level ensures a good solid starting point and then it's easy to get a nice clean edge when digging out the hole. Bear in mind that if you build up all the sleepers you'll have to lift the muck way up out of the hole. Only add bottom layer or two until hole is dug then build up rest of sleepers.
Hi Pondguru, this was an awesome video - we've just put a similar pond into our decking. One problem we're still trying to work out is that we want to put in a small water feature (simply one stream of water coming out of an urn into the pond), does the water feature have to be at the opposite end to the pump (so near to the filter end of the pond) or can the water feature be anywhere?
hi your pond looks brilliant i thougt the plywood would rot after so long. i have a pond but i am takein my pond out to make it deeper and think of usein wood now so how long will it last mate.
I missed that bit out but by looking at it the supports went from side to side then the uprights were banged down and secured to the outer edge. Supports for the shelf went back to surrounding 2" x 2" and also had pegs resting on top of concrete. Then top was screwed on.
+Andrew Tompkins Of pond construction? no. I gave up installing ponds a couple of years ago to concentrate on my shop then closed that early last year to concentrate on the online shop I have. The aquatic shop had been going for around 20 years but I only filmed the work in the last few years unfortunately.
The wood is pressure treated so it will last for ages. It is not sitting in wet conditions or soil so it should give at least 10-15 years (if not much longer) before rot starts.
Can you do an electro fishing video please loving your pond building though you also had some nice Rudd you should introduce some tench bream chub and perch even carp but your videos are great anyway as it is
I used to do this as a job so had to learn all methods of building ponds. Unfortunately as my online sales business took off I has to stop making ponds, close my shop and concentrate on working from home online. It's great as I can get out into the garden and grow / harvest all sorts of vegetables and fruit all year round.
@@jasonobrien1989 (my other channel) That is great to hear as being less reliant on the institutions coaxing people into all sorts of bad decisions has never been more important.
I'm just doing my research so I can plan one , one thing that gets me is building something string enough to cope with the water, was thinking of digging 2ft down and having it 2ft above, I like the idea of a wooden frame but ofcourse has to be done rite or will fold
Thats great to hear and best of luck with your pond keeping. I always like to get feedback when people have used something I've had in a video. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.
It is different from my normal style of ponds but it works quite well and was certainly very strong. Shame I had to make the two shelves but no way was I going to risk going through drainage.
thanks for the video and the ideas, I really enjoyed it, I have a small pond in my backyard and plan on building a 3x8x2 in my existing deck. I like the filter system but I'll be building a bog filter system at one end above the pond that will trickle into the pond to add some decretive plants that will clean the water and return it to the pond.
dank donkerson Sounds good to me and if you can get nature to help with filtration (especially the nitrate) then definitely go for it.Thanks for watching and appreciating the video.
Search for 'Oase Tradux' on Google and they will show up. We generally don't stock them as they are a bit obscure but I have used them in jobs a few times.
The aquamax 4000 eco premium pump is £199.99 and I can't remember how much the filtoclear 15000 is since I'm answering this from home. We always match internet prices. A pond with fish will invariably need a filter to keep the water clear but the pump and filter size will depend on what volume the pond is, how much sunlight it takes and what the fish stock is / will be.
This looks amazing. I'm very new to the pond life. Was hoping to do this exact thing inside the house in our basement. Would you know the wood sizes or have a layout plan that I could bring somewhere and have someone make the box for me if so that would be amazing
Hi, Enjoy watching all your videos, great job. I am building a 9ftx7ft x4ft fish pond. 2ft in the ground and 2ft above. Can you use carprt as an underlay?and would advise insulating the sides of the above ground part as you did i one of your videos? Thanks Andrew
Great help watching you tutorials. Question Have you ever used a brushable rubberized paint to a wooden patio pond? I see products on the market but don't really see much being used. I don't like the idea of the wrinkles and would like the use of paint. I'm building a 8'x4'x 3'deep pond out of 4"x4" thank you for your expertise
If it is 8' x 8' surface area there will be muck more pressure pushing out than in the pond here so I'd maybe be inclined to revisit the sleeper method for better strength.

I'd never considered changing the pump position in summer / winter, but that makes a great deal of sense. Every day's a school day!
I'm still a newbie with this pond stuff mate. You learn something new everyday lol. Cheers

@ the 7.30 mark, that structure would look superb if glass panes could be fitted. Probably a nightmare in practice. Awesome watching you work.

Definitely, yes. Its full of nitrates and organic matter which is an awesome fertiliser especially for vegetables. You're spot on there.

Enjoyed the clips pal..Looking to sort a pond sometime next year when i got the garden straight , used to have a large koi pond at me old place
I would go for a nexus but add extra hel-x to top up the K1. UV filter would be 110 watt and pump would depend on waterfall / cascade etc.

This was a great pond to build so thanks for watching and appreciating the video.
It is going down quite well with viewers.
Chuck some zeolite in the filter, add a heater and that pond just turned into a spa.

good job man needing to get my koi into the garage b4 its far to late. they are alreadi starting to rest
Beautiful! You make this look so simple. Thank you for sharing this simple, concise, easy to follow video:)

I'm glad you enjoy the videos but I gave up installing ponds a few years ago. I wish I made more videos but the ones I did cover most types of ponds.
Looks great! I’m hoping to build a much smaller raised pond than this, approx 2m x 1m x 70cm deep. How long would you expect a structure like this to last?

No worries, man. Glad you enjoyed the video. I wish I had more tome to make instructional videos as they are always quite popular.
Probably my own which is 30m x 26m x 5m deep and clay lined. Largest lined pond was probably one in Durham which was approx. 20m x 12m x 1.5m deep.
Another great job you make it look so easy to do...
If I hadn't have had plenty of practice building ponds I'd say that I edit out all the mistakes, lol
Hi Pondguru, this was an awesome video - we've just put a similar pond into our decking. One problem we're still trying to work out is that we want to put in a small water feature (simply one stream of water coming out of an urn into the pond), does the water feature have to be at the opposite end to the pump (so near to the filter end of the pond) or can the water feature be anywhere?
how do you hide power cables from the pump?
good self filming and doing the job and all good . all over a nicely done job.
Very nice pond, looks great. Have you ever done one with a viewing window on the side?
Brill. Thank you! Is it ok if we want to attach the water feature to the actual filter outlet pipe?
By using the thick marine ply on the internals that acts as an extra brace. If in doubt, use sleepers - they aint going anywhere.
hi your pond looks brilliant i thougt the plywood would rot after so long.
i have a pond but i am takein my pond out to make it deeper and think of usein wood now so how long will it last mate.
I missed that bit out but by looking at it the supports went from side to side then the uprights were banged down and secured to the outer edge. Supports for the shelf went back to surrounding 2" x 2" and also had pegs resting on top of concrete. Then top was screwed on.
Sensational :) i would like to know a litter more about having the inlet/outlet attachments through the liner

+Pondguru Outdoors Have you got any new videos ? These are fantastic :)
+Andrew Tompkins Of pond construction? no. I gave up installing ponds a couple of years ago to concentrate on my shop then closed that early last year to concentrate on the online shop I have. The aquatic shop had been going for around 20 years but I only filmed the work in the last few years unfortunately.
Great video mate good explanations. How much do the filters and pumps cost? I would love my own garden pond, do you have to have pumps and filters?
What happens when you get days of heavy rain, what is stopping it from overflowing
The wood is pressure treated so it will last for ages. It is not sitting in wet conditions or soil so it should give at least 10-15 years (if not much longer) before rot starts.

@@pondguru Yes years ago you got me in to ponds and that led me to Veg growing too. Important to try and be a little more self sufficient.
@@jasonobrien1989 (my other channel) That is great to hear as being less reliant on the institutions coaxing people into all sorts of bad decisions has never been more important.
@@ThousandYardStare Good man on them channels.
@@jasonobrien1989 Best of luck for the next few years - we should all be working on self-reliance to some degree.
Shame I had to make the two shelves but no way was I going to risk going through drainage.
hi do i need to have a consumer unit for pond or can i just use Blagdon 5 Way Switch Box for pump and uv
?
Beautiful Job very well explained. Congratulations !
thanks for the video and the ideas, I really enjoyed it, I have a small pond in my backyard and plan on building a 3x8x2 in my existing deck.
I have only one pond now but it is more like a lake. It shows up in plenty of my videos including 'fish rehoming pond' and 'garden update 2012'
Unfortunately I just made this one up as I went along and didn't take any notes of wood sizes or dimensions other than what is mentioned in the video.
used your tips to help build my raised pond in my vids thanks
+Steven Mould It looks great and at night the light effect down into the water is very nice.
Hi, Enjoy watching all your videos, great job. I am building a 9ftx7ft x4ft fish pond. 2ft in the ground and 2ft above. Can you use carprt as an underlay?and would advise insulating the sides of the above ground part as you did i one of your videos?
Thanks
Andrew
It varies and I price every job as a separately. Some of the earlier comments may have a figure on but I can't remember how much it was.
thank you for your help, your pond it amazine. great video, keep up the good work.do you have any water wall video?
I like this video nice pond, thought the filter system was very interesting looks extremely easy to clean.
A pressurised filter for a pond is different than for an aquarium in that it needs an external pump to supply it with water.
Yes, that would work. I suppose there isn't any need to go with foundation as a first stage so whatever you are happiest doing.
what do you call the fittings used for the return and feed for the pond liner? thankyou, and also where is your power cable from pump routed?
If it is 8' x 8' surface area there will be muck more pressure pushing out than in the pond here so I'd maybe be inclined to revisit the sleeper method for better strength.
