patricia stellanova thank you so much for such a lovely comment! I'm so touched! I'm so glad someone feels this way! It's such a beautiful piece i couldn't help but share it and spread the serenity and joy it brought me..
I used to own a cd by The Amaryllis Consort. The most perfect way (for me, at any rate.) to drift off to sleep. I must find it or obtain a new copy! Many thanks for reminding me what a pleasure this genre of music can be. On reflection, a bit of a guilty pleasure for a hairy bloke who listens to Devo, The Stranglers, Sisters of Mercy, etc, etc!

Also a lovely recording by the Princeton Singers. Here are stanzas 1, 3, and 4, which turn from the lament for Herod's slaughter of the innocents to the victorious Christ. Be still, my blessed Babe, though cause Thou hast to mourn, Whose blood most innocent to shed the cruel king has sworn; And lo, alas! behold what slaughter he doth make, Shedding the blood of infants all, sweet Saviour, for Thy sake. A King, a King is born, they say, which King this king would kill. Refrain: O woe and woeful heavy day when wretches have their will! Lulla, la-lulla, lulla, lullaby. Lo, lo, my little Babe, be still, lament no more: From fury Thou shalt step aside, help have we still instore; We heavenly warning have some other soil to seek; From death must fly the Lord of life, as lamb both mild and meek; Thus must my Babe obey the king that would Him kill. Refrain. But thou shalt live and reign, as sibyls [prophets] hath foresaid, As all the prophets prophesy, whose mother, yet a maid And perfect virgin pure, with her breasts shall upbread Both God and man that all hath made, the Son of heavenly seed, Whom caitiffs none can 'tray, whom tyrants none can kill. Refrain.
Magnificent Photos of the Church Interior ! Simply Grandiose . I Love Byrd's Lullaby Even Though it is I Believe the Saddest and Most Heartbreaking Choral Piece Ever Written -- And Lo, Alas Behold-- What Slaughter He is Making -- Shedding the Blood of Infants -- For Thy Sake . Thank You for Uploading This . They Sing It Beautifully .

Thank you for your lovely comment! I'm glad you like it, one of my favourites!
Byrd wrote a lovely setting for keyboard also - gorgeous.
Would you know where the keyboard version of this piece was published? I'd love to play this on my spinet.
Presumably in Musica Britannica (see if you legally photocopy from your reference library). No sign at Petrucci yet - but I'm still looking!
I've got this by the Tallis Scholars on CD . always great. Thank you

William had the knack / because words / were

them / this meant / he could do / any emotion
in the gamut / he could be happy / he could
be sad / and anything in between / and
on the sad side / he could really / dwell
into / the very many shades / and extremes

just makes / a colossal difference / forget / lose

This is from Peter and Charles's conversation in the documentary Playing Elizabeth's Tune

IMHO Tompkin's setting of When David Heard is pretty high up in the sad stakes too.
thank you for the exquisite music but which church is depicted in the picture ?
rupert sackville thank you so much for the comment. I'm afraid i don't know which Churches these are. They're just images i googled and saved :)
First two images - Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon.Third image - Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. No idea as to the third one.
I believe the final image is from the Cathedral in Burgos, Spain.
coro sinistro, mas gostei.
Getting sleepy here
