@Chase Anderson Sorry Chase, we get 100s of emails per day and a bit hard to keep track. Surely Brian didn’t exclude you on purpose, that’s for sure. Thanks a ton for watching! Send us an email and we'd be more than happy to send you a little care package 🤙
I agree with Dave ! I been listening Brian . And flyfishing for 20 yrs. Ive done ok and caught some serious bass and crappie . But WOW ! ALL your tutorials have upped my game tremendously ! Thanks much !
Thanks foe answering my Son in Laws question, he is just on fire about flyfishing! And I (being a seasoned fly guy) have been learning and advancing my skills thanks to your videos also. Thanks again, Spurge.
As a newbie I'm wearing out the replay. Play, rewind, repeat. Sometimes I have to just hit pause and absorb what you say. Then I watch and listen again. These videos are excellent! Thank you again for doing such a great job getting the point across. Even if I have to rewatch time and time again. 👍👍
7:05 " Its not Rocket surgery ." I never new that was a job. lmao I hope that rocket is still alive. You are an amazing teacher BRIAN. Thnx for helping me with my new hobby. Happy Fishing All :)
I love watching your videos. As a retired English teacher, I want to help you by pointing out the word reiterate. No n in the word. It's re it er ate. You do such a good job, I want you to be better because you explain things very well. ❤
He assures us that he didn't insert an n in the word. Just his Missouri inflection. Thanks for caring though. We appreciate it and thanks for watching.
Seeing all these questions being submitted from far away areas makes me realize how fortunate I am to live within a few miles of the store! Thanks for all the great content and info. Also, to all those watching, if you get a chance to attend any of MRO classes, do so. You will not regret it. (believe me, I am NOT being compensated for this comment! )
I’ve been using just straight up 4lb mono. I’m a newb and catch a lot of trees and bushes. I keep 3 or 4 looped up already. Tapered leaders do seem to cast better, when I learn to cast better I’ll start using them. The old guy that instructed me last year has been using the same leader for like a year. I go thru 2 or 3 a day.
Thanks for your videos. I've been wanting to start with fly fishing, am used to spinning and bait casting setups. FF is not very popular here in the Philippines but there are certain groups that are into it. I have watched your "how to videos" up to Ep. 14 and have learned a lot. I already have a FF gear and will try it in the coming weeks. Hope you keep on uploading videos. =-)
Brian is actually wrapping up his book as I type this, set to be released in August all about leaders. Should have some helpful videos to go right along with it. So stay tuned!
I would also add that, if using a heavy bead headed fly, the weight of the bead can mean stepping up the tippet, they put a lot of stress on the knot. Once when I made the error of not bothering to change tippet thickness, just to rub it in I found myself with a salmon of about 10 lbs on a 5X tippet.
Morning Brian, I’m late to the game here but I do have a question regarding size. I do have the general idea of choosing the size with the formula but what about those flies with 1/0, 2/0 or even trailers? Hope my question makes sense.
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly to Brian at the shop and he’ll be happy to help. You can call him or email him. He doesn’t monitor the comments here.
Could the math changed based solely on the weight of the fly? Meaning, if I have a size 12 dry fly, and a size 12 weighted wooly bugger streamer... would they both use the same ~4x tippet? I recently casted a weighted streamer for the first time, and really disliked the experience. It felt like the physics were wrong, and my line was fighting the weight of the fly, no matter how I changed my mechanics to try to smooth things out. I did the divide by 3 method (probably casting a 4x leader with a 15 wooly bugger). Perhaps my mistake was not using a heavier leader?
@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks, maybe that was the mistake, as I was just guessing at size - but then did divide by 3. I bought one of the hook charts for my sling pack, I'll use that next time. Good to know the math still works - thank you.
Can I just use conventional fishing Mono or Fluor for Tippett and Leaders? they are very expensive for someone just starting out with not a lot of cash.
We do it every day here in the shop and Brian has a whole book coming out based on the subject. He talks about it alot in videos. Our website also lists the butt diameters of each leader there. We are all in. Let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned, we've got a lot of educational content coming THIS WEEK! Is this equation helpful for you? Comment below!
Mad River Outfitters great vid, but very disappointed. I am positive I’ve asked this question in an email before...

The art of dry humour and a grasp of the English language. " It's not rocket surgery or brain science." Marvelous!
Thanks for being here. More to come.
You guys are not only funny but very educational especially for a newbie like myself.
We take ourselves far less seriously than the sport! You'll be a veteran in no time, Bruce. Send us your catches! 🤙

Great vid!
In conclusion, all tackles should be decided by yourself. However, a guide is needed. That's why this video is awesome👍
Thanks for watching.
Loving the videos! Can't wait to get out and fish. Just got myself a rod.
Let us know how we can help further.
im new to fly fishing Brian and gang, you guys do an awesome job

Using a properly tapered leader WILL help you learn to cast better. It's basic physics. ua-cam.com/video/AtXPJszdW9s/v-deo.html
the best as always n thanks
Thanks for being here.
New to Fly Fishing. Love the Content! I've got a 100 page spiral notebook dedicated to your Video Series and Kelly Galloup is in there too! THANKS!

I love your videos. Could you consider doing a video on how to make your own leaders?

@@Madriveroutfitters I'll make sure to purchase the book as well.
Love your videos
Thanks for watching, Mr. Crumpton!
Thank you for very excellent info and presentation. Can you clarify when to divide by 3 vs 4. For example with a size 12, why use a 4X vs a 3X leader?
Thanks for watching. He explains further here:

Pretty straight forward and clear, cheers for the tip!(pet).
How would you go about selecting tippet size for casting multiple flies out?
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions over to Brian via e-mail or give him a call and he’ll be happy to help!

@@Madriveroutfitters Will do

Russian5 Divide by 3 or 4. Size 15 Wooly Bugger makes no sense. It was probably much bigger and yes, your tippet was WAY too thin.
Watch episode 9 of the Getting Started in Fly Fishing program as well and it will make sense.
@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks, maybe that was the mistake, as I was just guessing at size - but then did divide by 3.
I bought one of the hook charts for my sling pack, I'll use that next time.
Good to know the math still works - thank you.
So...if I have a 4x leader and want to change to a new tippet, say 6x do I need to change the leader as well?
SpaklesDr Not necessarily. Can cut back a bit and add some 6x. We have a few videos here tha address this exactly.
How do I send in questions I'm from McMinnville TN just got back into fly fishing. I'm actually going today.
As he says in the video......admin@madriveroutfitters.com or give the shop a call. 614-451-0363. Thanks.
Maybe a basic question, but can ANY tippet go onto ANY leader? IE: what if you have a 4x leader and want to put 5x tippet on, does that work?
Please send your questions over to the shop via email and they will be happy to help/answer. Thanks.
Can I just use conventional fishing Mono or Fluor for Tippett and Leaders? they are very expensive for someone just starting out with not a lot of cash.
No, you cannot. A leader MUST be tapered. Watch this:
ua-cam.com/video/AtXPJszdW9s/v-deo.html
Great video. It certainly isn't Rocket surgery or Brain science!! :) Was that deliberate?
Al the ex carper Moz Rocket surgery is serious stuff.
So for a light fly I want 0-2x?
Sounds opposite? A light fly/small fly would want 5X, 6X.
No body ever talks about the butt section on a knot less leader if changing up or down flys a lot of knot less leaders won't turn over larger flys
We do it every day here in the shop and Brian has a whole book coming out based on the subject. He talks about it alot in videos. Our website also lists the butt diameters of each leader there. We are all in. Let us know if you have any questions.
