  • "The Making Of" with pianist Anna Fedorova's Rachmaninoff Recording.
Piano Concerto No. 1, Preludes, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Anna Fedorova (piano), Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen, Modestas Pitrenas (conductor)
Anna Fedorova (booklet liner notes, excerpt): "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini was the last big work Rachmaninoff wrote for piano. He wrote it in 1934 at his summer residence “Senar” which is located on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Shortly before recording this album, I was extremely fortunate to visit this special place which is now overseen by the Rachmaninoff Foundation. It was so special to visit Rachmaninoff’s home - everything is left just as if he was still living there. All the furniture, silverware…even sheets and towels are authentic. Of course, the biggest treat for me was to try Rachmaninoff’s piano which he bought in 1930 and which is kept in absolutely perfect shape! In fact, it is the very piano he composed Paganini Rhapsody on. Being in his studio, sitting at his table, playing on his piano, and diving into the atmosphere of his life - all this was the greatest inspiration I could imagine for recording his music."

I have an enormous respect for musicians who put energy and enthusiasm in getting close to the composer and feel and understand the soul of the composer. I read many biographies on Rachmaninoff and always found that he is a modest composer and musician with a deep, passionate soul. A soul that produces music that brings tears to the eyes and that reflects eternal beauty.
Ms Fedorova, my respect to you for sharing this experience and bringing peace to the world with your music and smile! Thank you. Family Van Couwenberghe, Belgium.

Wow what a charmer and brilliant pianist! I love the way you convey the emotions in Rachmaninov's works. It doesn't hurt that you have such a winning smile. You are by far my favorite Rachmaninov pianist and I have a large collection of his works. I first discovered your performance of his 3rd concerto yesterday and I can't wait to study your performances of his other works. I am so excited that these are available to me.
It is a frustration to me that I cannot find your performances on Blu-ray!! I hope that changes in the future. I will need to settle for your gorgeous UA-cam performances. The video recording of you and the orchestra and the video editing on them are superb. It is great to have the audio of your amazing performances but to add video adds SO much to my appreciation of Rachmaninov's masterpieces and of your piano magic.
I used to take care of a moderate number of famous Russian ice skaters when they came to train in Colorado Springs with Carlo Fassi and I have always been so amazed that so many amazing people have come from Russia over the decades. I have always been obsessed with the works of Shostakovich and with his relationship with Stalin. Recently I have begun an intensive study of Rachmaninov's works and what a joy that has become. I discovered you just in time to magnify my amazement of and deep appreciation for Rachmaninov. Thank you so much for making these performances available.
I try not to think how exciting it would be to have a face to face conversation with you as it was with the ice skaters but alas and alack....... Definitely consider me one of your most ardent fans and one regularly looking for your performances in video format.

I agree with you, Anna. Rach Opus 1 is my favorite concerto of his. And written when he was only a teenager. Amazing. The second movement is especially compelling. I can listen over and over.
