In addition to Doctors licensed in other states, there are many qualified Nurses and some Doctors from other countries, who can not get licensed here, and end up working at a lower level. Several years ago, I met an EMT working on an ambulance, and it turned out he had been a practicing thoracic surgeon in the Philippines.

Good point, I'm sure there are plenty of folks with the proper skills, but not allowed.

When it comes to licensing those from other countries there is no way to verify the level of education and requirements for skilled jobs such as nurses and doctors. They should and currently need to pass the local medical board exams just like US-trained professionals

The buck stops at Governor Green.
He campaigned on eliminating GET on food and drugs. Now no more. Hawaii has a surplus of tax revenues, why not eliminating GET on health care?

Another thing they should consider is loan forgiveness for med school grads that what to practice in Hawaii. My sons is a perfect example. Attended UH Hilo and fell in love with the island and community. He also worked at the Hilo medical center while in college. He is currently in 3rd year of med school and would LOVE to return to Hilo once he’s a doctor. Unfortunately, with cost of living, pay, student loans, and taxes, he would never be able to do that.

I didn't know GET applied to medical services as well. That's just ridiculous. Hawaii has very effectively discouraged skilled medical services from coming here. Hawaii already is among the highest cost of living in the country. Add to that shipping costs for equipment and supplies, and GET and it becomes cost prohibitive. Unfortunately, as we know it'll take time to change the laws. In the meantime our health care services will remain lacking in quality and accessibility.

These are good short term solutions. Long term, universal health care is the answer.
