God I don't know what draws me to this album, it just is so raw in form and it just gives me chills. Every time I try to show someone this album, they dismiss it as terrible singing... I just don't understand why they could think that. It just goes to show that we don't need the best, most edited vocals to make moving, and excellent music.

I went to her Seattle show... My sister listens to kinda mainstream alternative rock and is a popular musician herself among her people... She came with me --- she was a little worried I was so excited mwahahahaha... We were in the second row and she was absolutely MESMERIZING to watch. I found my mind wandering and then just going black from the sheer visual nirvana generated by the movements of her fingers and the standing waves generated by her strings and her costume and attractiveness and guitar / everything player and her whole family on stage with her and her voice and married to Andy Sandberg-ness. I cried during several songs for absolutely no reason except that in pure beauty in art there is a quality that makes the heart ache simply because it makes the heart feel as though it has been understood... It was probably the best concert of my life and one of the best moments. My sister was SURPRISED, to say the least.. Next, to BABYMETAL!

Walnut Whales is the self-distributed debut EP by Joanna Newsom. It was released on CD-R in 2002. Though the majority of the tracks were re-recorded, with very slightly altered lyrics, for her debut full length album The Milk-Eyed Mender, three of the songs - "Erin", "Flying a Kite", and "The Fray" - are otherwise unreleased. Being a limited edition release, it is now unavailable outside of file-sharing networks and second-hand exchanges.
    Track listing[edit]
All songs written by Joanna Newsom.
    "Erin" - 3:38
    "Cassiopeia" - 4:00
    "Peach, Plum, Pear" - 3:27
"Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie" - 3:52
    "Flying a Kite" - 6:34
    "The Fray" - 3:22
"En Gallop!" (Spelled without an "!" on The Milk-Eyed Mender) - 6:26
    "The Book of Right-On" - 4:40

My understanding from what I've read and heard in her interviews is that calling Walnut Whales and Yarn and Glue "EPs" that were "released" is a bit of an overstatement. She said there was very little forethought into their recording - that it didn't involve much more than pressing the record button on a laptop. She didn't think of them as EPs or even intend to distribute them at first, they were just meant to be personal documents of the songs she'd written. Eventually, when she started playing shows, she made CD copies to give to a few friends and also just to have something to sell at the merch table, and that's when they spread around and eventually got her her first record deal.

  • @fosterlee6719

In my opinion, It's not that this is any "better" or "worse" than her studio work, it's that I respond to the youth and freedom in her spirit. This isn't going to sell more than a few thousand copies in this form, so I suppose over time her edges have been worn down. I'm maybe over-thinking this. But. It's astounding as-is, easily one of my favorite records just for the complete statement it makes.

    Erin lyrics:
    Erin, Erin, Erin!
    Errin' across America
    Do now cheer me on
Can you hear the song for you?
    Quick, now, caramel dip
Give it up to the runaway ship
Hail, now, hail to the bitch
The hairy literary with the nervous, nervous twitch
    Shy, your light pops out
    And we stand there astounded
And we pound our heads and shout
    We shout 'alleluia'
Well, look what it did to ya
    Oh, a horrible mess
And we're eatin' by the river in the sunday dress
    Oh, serenade me
    Eatin' the biscuits and gravy
    You are missin' from me
As you juggle with your uncle in the red, red sea
    I will wait, or will
Knock my knees and talk, you oh so still
    Oh, Shenandoah
We just crossed the wide Missouri
    You are so...
    Bonny, shhhhhh, do not worry
    Quick, now, caramel dip
Give it up to the runaway ship
Life's so sweet and so low
Buried in the water, yeah, buried in the snow
So dear, deep and so dark
Sleepin' under papers in the central park
Twentieth floor balcony houses what is home to me
Twentieth floor balcony houses what is home to me

I think the version of "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" on this EP is softer, gentler, and much more melancholy and intimate than the version on The Milk-Eyed Mender. I prefer the EP version to the album version, but it's good to have both.

No one captivates like Joanna. This seminal work is fantastic and comes across as a demo for her masterwork, Milk Eyed Mender. Apparently she was only singing and composing for a few weeks when these recordings were made. Surprised that Flying a Kite didn't get re-recorded. That song is perhaps the most accessible in the lot and she may have considered it too linear.

Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past ..

An actual good comparison for this. Hate when people compare to bjork. Barely any similarities apart from a “weird” singing voice

anyone know how to get a hold of a legit copy of this? I found one for sale online for $75 but am not sure how to tell if it's legitimate. I would gladly pay that if I can verify it's authenticity. because I believe the original is just burned cds sold at early shows which would be very easy to fake.

WHY is this called EP - surely this is a little more than just EXTENDED PLAY?????
The Ramones did albums that were shorter than this EP.

The Ramones did whole albums shorter than her longer songs.
