Hi, so thankful to you.... I have an XC90 (2013), I found myself unable to refuel as the cap would not open... went to Vovlo, they sorted it and told me i should book the car in for them to look at it and fixed it... Estimated cost £500.... MOT due so have to have it fixed.... Lucky for me I found your video, and went to put some oil on the mechanism.... didn't even need to open the white casing. It is all fixed now.... And I have cancelled my visit to the garage.... You just saved me £500.... Thank you!!! I am so grateful!
A spare noname part i found was 60 bucks. 500 pounds for fixing that is so unethical but that is supply and demand for you. They'll take any chances they can to rob you when they think you don't know better.
6 years on & this video is still of great help!! My XC90 had the same problem & after watching this yesterday I stripped mine out this morning & covered the screw gear with white grease ( lasts longer than any other grease ) put it back together & hey presto SUCCESS!!! The only thing that’s different is the delay time before the plunger activates. For some reason the delay on mine is close to 20 minutes before it kicks in & locks the fuel flap. Apart from that I couldn’t be happier especially with arseholes stealing fuel from cars during the shortage right now!!
This is a real world simple fix for a known problem. All Simons videos are excellent and address everyday problems that appear on high mileage cars. The S60 is an excellent car, but when the miles pile up things start to go wrong, these videos really do help keep our ageing s60s not only get through MOTs but restore power and ride quality. Thank you Simon, don't bin your car any time soon!
I've had my Volvo S60 (2004) for about 5 years. The lock for the fuel cap has never worked. HOWEVER!!! Following the instructions of this video I made it work for the first time ever! Thank you sir!
Yeah! Congratulations. I just bought a 2004 XC90 that has the pin closed causing the door to be ajar. This video will be a great help when I get around to trouble-shooting the problem. Thanks!
Just used this video to recondition the fuel flap solenoid on my XC90. Worked like a charm, though like one of the other commenters I thought at first it hadn't worked because the delay time is about 20 minutes. Thank you for doing this video, it's saved me simply paying to replace the part.
Well done - I replaced a faulty one with another faulty one - having viewed this realised they were both fine - but the old grease had become congealed on the thread. Thanks SiRobb
I didn't have grease on hand, and thought I'd try this with WD 40 while waiting for the wife to come out of work. Result, 4 minutes and a working fuel filler lock. Wouldn't have tried it without you. Thank you so much.
Just repaired my 850's fuel flap lock this way. It works perfectly now! There seems to be no delay on my 850 as the fuel flap locks instantly when I lock the doors.
Got all fixed and new hinge for a fiver off eBay all working perfectly mate thanks so much for great how to videos! you'll save me £££ fortune over time. And are one the best UA-camrs on all things Volvo S60.
Great video and explanation. In my case, the failure was the white bushing that inserts into the mounting plate/housing came loose (it is tight to the plate/housing in your video) and I believe it was preventing locking from happening. The detailed disassembled video was very helpful. The innards of my unit were clean and like new, after 18 years. Another benefit of your video is that a small bumper piece that slides into half the housing that lessens the impact on unlocking fell out when disassembling - in your video I can see it in its proper place.
Great video, thanks. Judging by the number of views, this is a common problem! My flap refused to open when I pulled up at a petrol station and I've got a temporary fix (?!) of plugging the hole in the flap. Will have to do it properly. Very easy access.
Well that was great not only did you help me with the electrical issue but I also noticed the two bolts holding the flap spring that was also broken on mine and easily fixed by watching your video thanks a lot
Thank you so much. Fixed mine following the instructions. I think the problem is obstruction between the black moving part and the white casing. Cleaned it and put some oil and it works!
Thanks to your video, my tank is safely lockable again. I took the motor off, then I found out that two teeth were broken off the gear. I repaired and re-assembled these and then everything worked again. Thanks again!
Superglue was my first idea, but that broke again. Then I took a piece of aluminum, in the shape of a little pizza slice. With a file I made two teeth at the rounded end of the 'pizza slice'. Then I roughly cut the shape of the piece of aluminum from the plastic gear with a little saw (not to the centre of the gear, roughly halfway), heating the aluminum, and fusing it into place in the plastic. Two drops of super glue for the security on each side. At last I filed the sides flush and the lock still works after a few months.
I had the same problem, 3 teeth were broken on my 2004 S60. I used smth similar to JB Weld, mixed the two compounds together and slap them onto the missing teeth, then I filed them after it has cured, which was around 5 to 10 mins. Now it works like a charm. Thanks to SiRobb for showing the internal workings of the locking mechanism, it's not so difficult to fix after all.
Thanks for this video , ive just bought a Volvo s60 d5 and thought the flap was damaged , didn't know about the 10 minute delay, just gone out to the car and checked it and its locked , thanks for a very informative video
From korea. I really poor at english but your video clip how to fix fuel flap on old volvos works well. I am pleased to know you and your other videos. In my country, old type volvo xc90 (made in 2013 year) is quite rare stuff and only big cities have a service center. Of course their are a lot of waiting line on them. Thanos simon you make me save a lots of money and time. Hope your good luck!
Good suggestion and excellent video, but I didn't fancy screwing into a metal body, near a fuel cap. I sourced a replacement (new) bracket & spring from a well known auction site for £6.99 and it took me 1/2 to fit. It was an aftermarket part rather than a Volvo main-stealer priced part; but on a 14 year old V70 (with only 55k on the clock) it was worth the price and the time. Thanks for your video's; I do find them easy to follow!
Simon king, did you watch this video or a different one? Si didn't comment on the hinge spring? & For information- the screws are only a few mm long once they screw into the plastic insert theirs just a void so no danger of screwing into the fuel filler pipe.
@@gasgiant7122 yeah I must have commented on the wrong video. Six years ago so really can't remember. Usefully have far too many tabs open and don't know where the music is coming from! What I do remember is buying and replacing the spring/bracket and all good. Also followed the refurb of the locking device, cleaned and lubed. All good. Really rate the videos SiRobb provides.
Lol petrol flaps joke was brilliantly slipped in their 🤣🤣 but I'm definitely going to be able to get my fuel fix with this video thanks again buddy very informative as always your my S60 D5 owner go to guru guy👌👍😉
Thanks a bunch for this video. Just recently I actually found this wire hanging loose, disconnected from the socket and I had no idea where it was supposed to go. Turns out the fuel door never locks on my car. The previous owner of the car probably disconnected it after a problem with the mechanism. Gonna look into it now. Thnx again!
Thanks Si. My (V70 2005 Mk2, 130k) would not unlock at fuel station. Hit the wing next to the lock and it unlocked. Have found the way in like you suggested and will be doing the strip down and lubricate with Silicone grease, not sure about petroleum based grease on plastic. Potentially motor brushes have worn and are losing their pressure and sticking !!
Had my fuel cap stolen so after buying a new one I looked into why my fuel door lock wasn't working. Re-seated the connector contacts and tested it in both directions with the 12V auxiliary outlet located on that panel. Got it working nice in both directions but still couldn't figure out why it wouldn't lock. Watched your video and voila!
Hi. I did almost the same troubleshooting procedure like you, but after I took the electrical lock I used 12V DC power supply in order to test it and it was OK.
Brilliant and you made me laugh can’t beat a bit of Vaseline My fuel flap won’t open anless I disconnect the electrical connection I will have a try as per your video when it’s slighty warmer Was a worry at the pump today especially as they do drink fuel and I was nearly empty , Many thanks J .
Thank you - my motor / solenoid just needed a squirt of WD40 and it is as good as new - but without your video, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get it out
I think the only reason you did this video was so you could tell the flaps joke....But I'm so glad you did 'coz now I can fix my flaps just by greasing them !
Thank you for a comprehensive, easily understandable video and explanation. I am not a mechanic, but little more than an adequate DIY'r, so with your video instructions on my mobile phone in one hand and a screwdriver in the other, I gave it a go. Brilliant! Success immediately and exactly as you described, so I really am most grateful.
Thank you for this. This whole system is stupid. There’s nothing wrong with a simple flap that you press on the outside of the car. More technical wizardry that can go wrong. How many times have I gotten out of the car and forgot to press the stupid button and then I had to go back around and push it.
I've went through 4 of these locking mechanisms, in span of 1 year. 2 times the motor gave up, 2 times the cog broke teeth(s). Ive just come to conclusion its best to manually lock and open the fuel door everytime lol
On a 2004 US version of the XC90 this solenoid will stay retracted until the car travels at least once over 10 MPH. Mine did the same thing and responded well to WD40 lubricant.
with my volvo V70 i got vida and i turned off the fuel door locking delay i set it to 0 Minutes it was set to 10 minutes So for me it was easy i just locked the car and the fuel door locked instantly And unlocked instantly if you have access to vida you can turn off the locking delay i hope this helps take care
That is an option you could put 12 volts to the fuel door but after I fixed my fuel door I went on vida and I turned the fuel door locking delay back on as I prefer to lock the car and still be able to put the fuel in I had the locking delay off temporarily so I could see if it's working but now I know it works I have turned the delay back on and I hope this helps and take care
Its the same unit on the XC90, I found the contacts to the D.C. motor (it's not a solenoid) were loose and intermittant, usually only failed at the garage forecourt ! fitted a nylon fishing line to the locking pin for emergency operation too :)
Brilliant, thank you sir. My flap hinge spring thing just broke. I was wondering if there was a quick fix! And your other vid showed how. Mine only stayed closed because of the filler cap springy thingy, hardly a solution... Plus the flap locking mechanism in this vid - I'm on it! It didn't really work reliably when I bought the car, but wasn't too worried about that. Now, a 10 minute fiddle might do the job, with luck. Mind you, there are loads of pattern bits available out there. £5 for a complete hinge assembly (which might break really soon after fitting). My last job was the rear wiper. The nylon gear wheel was eroded by the worm screw, so repair wasn't really straight forward. A rebuilt complete motor assembly cost £25 delivered, and was a half hour job to fit, tops. Works as it should now. But does anyone have an answer to this - the rear wiper blade really won't bend to reach the top of the rear screen. And it hits the 'spoiler' (stupid thing, but not removable, realistically) too, the cause of the gear wheel failure over time. I bought a new arm and blade assembly, and the same problem occurred. So I have sawn part of the blade cover away. Not ideal, and shouldn't happen - any ideas out there? I'm sure it worked properly when I bought the car as an 8 year old... But don't despair, all you Volvo owners of ageing vehicles, there is usually a way. Like with 'cloudy' headlamps - either an afternoon's work with emery paper and elbow grease + laquer (literally £3, plus £5 postage from China!). Or £40 a pop for pattern headlamp units and an afternoon working out how to re-fit the bumper. Keep up all the good work SiRobb, from Sir Bob o' the far North (-:)
It worked for me too. The manual release flap broke off as I fiddled with it which is typical of old plastic. Hope it doesn't cause me trouble one day. 60 bucks for a replacement so I think I'll take my chances. Worst case it can be disassembled and pulled out.
@@Dennis-ud2nh Try a breakers yard for a working spare. Nothing ends up in a breakers yard because of a non working fuel flap so there's good chance of success. 👍🏾
Sorry, I think I used the wrong word. The thing that broke is the plastic protrusion that you pull to undo the lock from the inside of the car in case the lock is jammed. I think I'll manage anyway. And the lock still works about a month later just from lubrication.
Quite important to make sure the car thinks the latch is unlocked, before plugging it back in place. On some cars, you'll need to press the 'fuel cap unlock' button on the dash for 2-3 seconds, before plugging the connector on the latch. Otherwise, if the car thinks the latch is locked while the pin remains unlocked, next time you try to unlock it it will break the plastic wheel inside trying to force it open further more.
I am not sure that it would have broken the wheel - but this is good advice. I hit the button a few times while in the unlocked position without thinking, and I heard it trying to actuate, but don't think it did any damage.
What if my connector works only halfway, when i press unlock it multimeter shows bout 10amps but no voltage when i lock it? Is there problem in the cable(i dont think so bcuz it would not be functioning at all, right?). Is there any fuse/relay assigned for this?
Great help, in my case the electro-motor was sticking. Spayed it down with WD40 under constant battery power. Could here rpm increase as the shaft got lubricated.👍
Hi Si - same as below. I have had a 2005 V70 for the past 7 years & the fuel flap mech as never worked. The bonnet/hood will not release and whilst researching that issue I came across your video. I had a quick look and found the power source to the flap lock mech was disconnected?? I followed the advice in your video and "hey presto" it now woks. Many Thanks. You don't know how to release the bonnet/hood latches do you? :)
My xc90 2003 has lock problem, no problem for unlock. Followed video, not fix the issue. Who triggers the pin pull out to lock the door when close door? is there any sensor or something else?
I do also have the same issue, but unfortunately it looks like mine does not get power. Is there any fuse for this door I need to check or exchange? Is there any other part of the car I need to check to have power for this door? I hope someone can help me out with this. Thank you
I had ALARM SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED on the MFI and flap stuck locked. Takes 10 minutes to repair (redistribute grease) if you have TX25, TX20 and TX15 to hand. Indication cleared after 10 mins of driving.
It is so that you can fill your car up with fuel with the rest of the car locked for obvious reasons, there is always logic behind Volvo's design features!
Hi, I have a multimeter buying guide here ua-cam.com/video/USbS9porVXU/v-deo.html and if you check the amazon shop link in the video description there's a couple of recommended ones in the Car and DIY section.
Hello Does anyone know how to reprogram the transmitter to Lock/Unlock a Volvo XC70 2002-2003? It is like the FOB / one in this video @ when multimeter testing was taking place :-) I have 2 transmitters with the same serial numbers on back of transmitter.

Great trick. Fixed my brother in law XC90. He was quoted $550 Aus to fix it. I only charged him a bottle of red.

A new hinge is the right way to go. Less than $20 US, and a half hour of work. Using self tapping screws is an inferior solution.
very nice. the question is what to do when there is no power to the motor. mine will unlock, but not lock (no voltage for 'lock' polarity).
Thx. I resolved mine flap problem same way following your clip. Great.
Good video.I'll try that on mine. This was much better than reading a manual...Thanks!
Brilliant. Sorted my 06 V70 R. Thanks!
Lube those flaps! 😂
2022 and it will help! Spare part ordered, on the weekend I will replace mine
Hi.
Used your tip at My XC70 (2002),and now It's good as new;)
Thanks for brilliant info/video.
Happy Newyear sir.
Best regards from Sweden
/Hans.
Does that work on a 2014 v40 r design by any chance.
Great video, clear fotage, cut to the case and well put explenations! Thank you!
Thanks for the great instruction and tips
Hi Si - same as below. I have had a 2005 V70 for the past 7 years & the fuel flap mech as never worked. The bonnet/hood will not release and whilst researching that issue I came across your video. I had a quick look and found the power source to the flap lock mech was disconnected?? I followed the advice in your video and "hey presto" it now woks. Many Thanks. You don't know how to release the bonnet/hood latches do you? :)
Not needed to mess with the bonnet cables other than the odd clean and grease so can't help there unfortunately.
Perfect! Thanks for lending a helping hand.
How did you get access to the solenoid? I can remove the back felt panel, but there is a felt covering over the solenoid that doesn't seem to pop out.
My xc90 2003 has lock problem, no problem for unlock. Followed video, not fix the issue. Who triggers the pin pull out to lock the door when close door? is there any sensor or something else?
Hi .Great video,I’m A novice, what would you call the inside part ,if looking on eBay,or online . I have A Xc90. Thanks
Type in *XC90 fuel flap hinge.*
@@sirobb Thanks so much .
Mine is loose ,it comes up on the message display. Does that mean I need another hinge. Thanks again for your videos.
@@jalebjaba1487 What is the exact wording of the message?
Also what is loose? The flap door to the hinge or the hinge to the car's body?
@@sirobb The door doesn’t close flush , therefore I get A message that it’s open. Thanks
I do also have the same issue, but unfortunately it looks like mine does not get power. Is there any fuse for this door I need to check or exchange? Is there any other part of the car I need to check to have power for this door? I hope someone can help me out with this. Thank you
Thanks, great video and very helpful for my S-60!
i used a silicone lube spray to spray the mechanism inside the fuel door and also the locking mechanism inside the trunk under the carpet...works fine
I dont have enough power to lock, unlock work prfct. What can be problem?
Great video,i will try it out on my son's 2001 volvo s60 i was all ready to buy a new solenoid, but will try this first, looked pretty simple.
I had ALARM SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED on the MFI and flap stuck locked. Takes 10 minutes to repair (redistribute grease) if you have TX25, TX20 and TX15 to hand. Indication cleared after 10 mins of driving.
Thanks SiRobb this saved me $200

Thx for the video, my -02 V70 wont lock, just noisy as hell! Hoping that no plastic is broken....
si... have you done a mod on the flap hinge?
i have same problem on my s60 2006 , i will try your tip tomorrow mate
Excellent video, I solved in the same way the gas cap of my Xc70 thanks.
Thank you so much, it help me.
The question is why volvo put a delay in the lock mechanism? Very Unnecessary
It is so that you can fill your car up with fuel with the rest of the car locked for obvious reasons, there is always logic behind Volvo's design features!
@@nickclark6001 Logic, really. Why not just have a button inside the car like other cars and make life easier.
Thanks so much for your video, exactly what I was looking for.
Hi mate you go a link to the multimeter you have
Hi, I have a multimeter buying guide here ua-cam.com/video/USbS9porVXU/v-deo.html and if you check the amazon shop link in the video description there's a couple of recommended ones in the Car and DIY section.
Thanks for the vas & flaps! Made my week :)
Hello
Does anyone know how to reprogram the transmitter to Lock/Unlock a Volvo XC70 2002-2003?
It is like the FOB / one in this video @ when multimeter testing was taking place :-)
I have 2 transmitters with the same serial numbers on back of transmitter.
Fixed this! Tanks for the video! Peace of cake 🙂
Never thought to try Vaseline on the flaps. Do you think it is age related?
I think so. 😊
Good job. I just bought a used '06 S80 and need to check this solenoid. You may well save me $100.
I think I'm going to buy some velcro for now buddy. 😁
But thank you very much for making this video.
