The greatness of Vickers is often underappreciated because his voice is not the preferred romantic Italian tenor. I have studied and enjoyed all the great tenors since 1974, and over the years my appreciation of Vickers' art has grown to the point where he has become one of the top 3 tenors of all time to me. There is a uniqueness to his voice, no other tenor even sounds remotely like Vickers. On stage he was a force of power, since his acting ability matched his great voice. He was a difficult personality I know, yet he has to be remembered for his great giftings as an opera tenor, acting, stage presence and the voice of a god!

I think his voice was more beautiful than many favorite tenors. I consider him significantly better than del Monaco, for example, and I even think at his best his voice was more beautiful than Pavarotti's.

Vickers was a great Florestan for Klemperer and Karajan, and the best Otello. I rate him as one of the 5 greatest tenors ever!

It's all about the show on stage- Great drama presented by great singing and great singers. Performing artists create a universe when on stage and no one did this better than Vickers.

A dear friend of mine who worked with him said he was frightening back- and onstage, but that he was the best of the best. Rock-n-Roll!

Its quite extraordinary hearing Vickers sing. As despite his clearly having worked for years to create a perfect technique, as with every truly great artist, he gives the impression of giving us blessed listeners a natural outpouring of emotion. One that comes unaffectedly from the extraordinary combination of the text and Beethovens divine score. Divine!

What? If Vickers isn't a dramatic tenor, who is?

@@falkfink Francesco Merli, Mario Del Monaco, Kurt Baum, Franco Zanelli and Thomas Lomonaco, These all had a baritonal timbre and the passaggio zone in C4, Vickers didn't have those things

Vickers is the very definition of a Heldentenor.
