Everything arrived in a timely manner, all the lights worked and the included vellum is what sold me. The seller was also quite responsive, so I appreciate that.
If you have a vintage Marantz, Sansui, Kenwood, Pioneer receiver with lamps that have burned out, consider doing this LED conversion.

Cool.man. Still have my 46 year old 2270. Its on my shelf for display only, lights out. So pretty next to all the black boxes. BTW, the Phillips head screws are original, bolt heads are aftermarket. I bought mine brand new in "72 with the wood cabinet. That day still warms my heart.

Yes, still have the (1974 bought new) Marantz 2270, that came with the wood cabinet. About a year ago, It was sent it to a local “old school” HiFi repair shop .
Use it or sell it so someone else can enjoy it what a waste of fine audio smh
Early Marantz 22xx receivers made in Sun Valley California had the small phillips screws while the later Chatsworth California units had the hex bolts. Check the back of your receivers. My early serial 2270 has Phillips head screws and is an early run based on serial #. My 2230, 2245, 2265 and my 2265B all have hex bolts from the factory.
Looks so cool! Dang, when I was 15 I scoffed at gear like that. "Silver? Knobs? Faux wood panels? No concert-hall mode? Sooo '70s. Black and buttons and amber LCDs are the future!" Now I'd love to have a receiver like that, especially with the new lights. I love that this one has a midrange knob.

@@joentell Ah yes, gosh, I haven't heard Old Skool Pro logic in about 15 years. I wonder what that would even sound like now. Where's my copy of Top Gun on VHS?
People didn’t throw ‘70’s vintage HI Fi away due to the high quality. You can find them on eBay ( shipping costs can be high) or find locally on Craig’s List, Facebook Marketplace as well as garage sales and estate sales. Marantz is very collectible as well as Pioneer. There are some second tier items like Kenwood and Sansui and lower tier like Lafayette, Sherwood and Realistic which still work well and costs less.
Those old Marantz receivers sound great paired with the original Elac Debut series speakers. Very smooth mellow sound and they really showcase the bass those speakers are capable of. One of my systems is a 2226b running some B5's in my basement and the sound is sublime. They just don't build receivers like that anymore, unfortunately. I'm even running a fully rebuilt 2285b as my main stereo system due to liking the sound so much.
I know what you mean. As long as the speakers are relatively efficient (these amps can't handle the 4 ohm ELAC UB5's) these amps have some magic. I use mine with some old Pioneer FS52 towers from Andrew Jones.
@@joentell Yeah, the lower wattage 22xx receivers don't do all that well with 4 ohm speakers, but 6 ohm seem to be a nice sweet spot for them. You have to move up to the more powerful vintage Marantz's to be able to run a 4 ohm speaker well.
You thought about a test of vintage receiver vs new? Not sure how it could be done "scientifically", but it'd be a fun video nonetheless. ..especially compared to some small 20x2 class D amps vs your 2220b.
I see about the higher end Marantz models handling 4 ohm loads.
On my SMSL AD18 video, I did a quick and basic relative frequency response measurement and sound comparison between numerous amps including this Marantz. It has a certain sound signature that I find appealing.
The hex head bolts and the Phillips screws used to hold the faceplate on to various Marantz models are very different, the Phillips screws are a much smaller diameter and finer thread then the hex head bolts and they are not interchangeable. Note that those hex bolts are aluminum and quite soft, easily damaged. The Phillips screws are unique, if you lose one you'll probably end up replacing all four with something that looks similar, because despite having jars and jars full of miscellaneous old screws in our 40 year old audio repair shop, I've never randomly found or come across another screw that matches those Marantz Philips-head screws. When you go to take the faceplate off, be sure to use a fresh clean Phillips screwdriver of the right size so that you can get those screws out without chewing up the heads. They are plated brass or something similarly soft, non-magnetic stainless steel perhaps. Use of a cordless screwdriver to remove or reinstall the Phillips screws is most definitely not recommended! [Very small Philips head, it's a #0 or #1, I forget which).
Hey, there ya go Joe! Old is gold! I have a Marantz 2238b that was given to me. It still works and has not been recapped yet. I did however, replace the lights and the vellum on the meters. Big difference! It is showing its age though and while it sounds great as Marantz always has and still does, it will need some work eventually of the kind I can not do myself. I will decide then if I am going to keep it.
They knew how to make stuff back then. Real good high-end gear today is based on gear such as this. It is the foundation. I also have a Sansui 8080db and a Yamaha CR2020 I swap in and out on occasion. Both of those have had work done. The power board was rebuilt on the Yamaha which is more beastly now than it ever was and the Sansui (my prized piece sound-wise) has been re-capped. One thing to consider is re-capping a piece properly will generally buy 15 to 20 years more service, maybe longer.
I have been told by a few high-end amp makers that to get the same sound today as my Sansui has I would need to spend at least $10k on an amp! Yikes!
It is hard to beat hand-made in Japan with stellar quality control.

Joe. The stereo led lamp can be sanded to roughen the surface. It will spread the light out and tone down its brightness.
Hello Joe, I am so glad that I found the great resource from your channel. I inheritated Marantz 1530 from Aunt few years ago, haven't got time to enjoy it. But recently when I push the power button, no blue lamp came on, only red Stereo light on it. Discouraged first but decided to repair it and enjoy with the loving memory with my aunt. So, I am wonder if I could get your intelligence while I endeaver to fix it. Thank you very much for your time and video.

Yes, I do but I still like detail. I don't like muddy and I like clear vocals. My wife actually said something interesting; she likes a system that separates the vocals from the instruments well. Hmm. I think she's on to something. I like that too!
@@joentell Ya, for sure. I also like that. For me, I also gravitate towards a system or components that can separate not only voices, but also individual instruments within the performance/recording. When I'm listening to gear that I may consider buying, I always appreciate when I can hear new details in music that I know well. At the same time tho, I prefer gear that presents the music naturally...detailed, but not hyper detailed, bright, or too forward. I'm the type of person who likes to listen to music for at least 2 to 4 hours at a time, so I don't like gear that causes me listener fatigue after less than an hour or so.

I just found a 2230 and a Thorens TD145 on the curb. Good times. Both need a little work, but nothing major.
I found a 2270 at the dump ... works fine. I'm amazed at what they fetch on eBay.
Wholly sh*t, $10 a piece for those 4 face plate screws. Glad I have all 4 there. Your velum was not that bad considering all bulbs burned out from use.
you need to use red led for stereo, not warm white. the color will be more deep and perfect for fading display.
I put Blue LEDs in my 2275 . Nice look.
Curious what you had sitting next to your Marantz ? An equalizer ? If so what brand?

Nice Brah! I'm using a 2252 right now. Got it hooked up to a Mac mini, using a pair of cheap Insignia speakers, not bad sounding...

Also, these old Marantz receivers sound way more powerful than their wattage suggests.
@@joentell Read the back, B211's Coaxial (older model) . They are big, power hungry! I agree! Speaker is rated at 120W 8ohm, This Marantz can easily destroy it! Old school receivers have massive bass, they must have took power measurements at 24 ohms! hehehe!
I tweaked the performance, by adding a bit of my patented tech. Made this Marantz sound better than a Macintosh within its power limits.
I heard that Insignia is quite a decent speaker when modified. Also, I'm curious about your "patented tech." 😉

They have their mechanical limits and vibration issues, specially when rattled by the Marantz! hehehe! I'm hoping to reveal my technology to you, I'm out of the country at the moment but planning a trip back around Feb 2019. That's the reason I was asking you about Andrew, I would like to contact him and see if he would like to license my patented speaker technology.
So my technology deals with enhancing any speaker to sound "More stable" at the same time adding some very natural coloration not "EQ enhancement" So its a different natural sound reproduction. Sound signatures can be whatever you like, for example, E.T. can make the overall sound from a speaker sound like you are driving it with a Tube amplifier, or you are driving your system with a turntable etc... Another way of looking at it, your CD's or mp3's can sound like LP's with these small devices! More of an Analog sound!

You should probably get all your patents done and then create some videos to show what you've made and get an idea how interested people are. You can't put the horse before the carriage. Right now, all I know is patented technology and the name "Elementus Technology". Nothing more.

I put led lights in my marantz and not long after one went bad. I'm thinking about putting 8v 200ma fuse lamps back in because led lights seem to be too bright and uneven. I'm having a hard time making up my mind.

No, I just used the holes that were there.

It was a while back so I don't remember the details. I remember just taking out the old ones and placing the banana terminals in its place. It was a tight fit, but it worked.
Joe N Tell, after I saw your video, I searched on UA-cam who else mentioned the flimsiness of these terminal. Only you and another channel mentioned it. Only you had upgraded it for the better.

LED Conversion my ass! Do not use this as a reference to replace the 8v LED FUSE LAMPS. I listened to this example went through the front of my pristine out of the box Marantz and destroyed the front to get to the laps totally unnecessary. This example should be deleted and not the way to replace. To access just remove the two (2) screws in the rear housing the FUSE LAMPs they pop in close up and done. What took me 2 hours of destroying should have only took 25 min max. Thanks allot !
Stop placing blame on others. I documented what worked for me because there were no instructions that I found. I didn't destroy my front panel. If I had, then I would've documented that so you could learn from it. Do everyone a favor and make a video yourself.
@@joentell Sorry that video needs renamed or removed. The title is LED Conversion? more like face destruction =) and not the proper ray to restore lamps in a 2220. I meant no harm and place blame on no one. You need to inform this is not the right way. I have been working to restore my mint out of the box marantz since yesterday and still have problems. I wonder how many other receivers were needlessly defaced. Would you rather I say nothing?
Say what you want. I've actually done this procedure twice as I've changed the LED's to the traditional fuse bulbs. No problems on my end. So I don't know what's happening on yours. So yes, it seems like you are placing blame.
If you can do it better, go ahead and put yourself out there. Make a video.
