My issue with the Pizza ranking is that in my eyes there are 2 major sub categories of takeaway pizza. There is your standard takeaway pizza like dominoes, Papa johns, and other takeaways with pizza ovens which all tend to be greasey etc but then there are more artisanal pizza places which do wood fired pizza which also tend to have more adventurous toppings compared to standard pizza places
Yeah, but there are different quality places in all categories. You can get great gourmet kebabs, or utter filth. I think lumping all pizza into one is fair.
@@RobbieKnox Talking of artisanal elephant legs, have you tried Döner Bei Tante Anne near the Ribs of Beef (great pub on the river to wash it down after, if you weren't already aware of that either)? Vegan kebabs if you can imagine such a thing, served in an authentic German döner style. I've just seen a pic of her potato gyros on her website and want to order again...
Infinite respect for putting Indian way way ahead of Chinese, this is a solid fact and needs to be recognised as such. So much Chinese takeaway food now in the UK is just meat/veg in a vaguely Chinese flavoured gravy, just nothing special to set it apart. Even an average curry really hits the spot, a good one is an experience out of this world. This isn't to dunk on Chinese food generally, it is amazing, but I think in the context of this video (UK takeaway options) you've got it right. I remember seeing a tweet or a video a while back noting the decline of UK Chinese food, possibly something to do with a lot of them having been proper family-run businesses that haven't continued being so - a lot of the children of owners who came to the UK in the latter half of the 20th Century have now grown up and moved on to other careers, and these establishments have been sold to larger corporations that haven't maintained the original ethos. There are almost certainly other factors, and I could be wrong entirely, but it's an interesting trend
In my city in Norway we have something very similar to what you described Bobby Chef’s as; polystyrene tray with fried rice and you pick and chose between different fried foods and chips
The only Thai place I like, is Rosa's there's not many outlets/restaurants but I'd throughly recommend giving them a go. I agree with you though regarding the lacklustre of British Thai experience.
My takeaways rated: 1. Indian (no explanation needed, Robbie said it all, although my favourite is definitely a lamb dupiaza, and one tiny criticism would be that the starters are varied enough) 2. Kebab (always get a naan so it's similar to Indian in my opinion) 3. Chinese (Opposite to Indian, starters are incredible like duck and pancakes, spring rolls, salt and pepper chicken, ribs etc., Yet the mains are a bit weaker and I'll always end up with a sweet and sour, chow mein or Chinese chicken curry) 4. Pizza (specifically a dominos/pizza hut place, not a fan of these kebab shops that do pizza on the side) 5. Burgers (if done right they're amazing, but some can be dry and literal shit put on a bun) 6. Fried Chicken (Gotta be in the mood for it, sometimes it can be gristly as anything, but sometimes it's incredible) 7. Thai (only ever had green curry so need to try more) 8. Mexican (never really had it as a takeaway, only home made food) 9. Fish and Chips. (Yes, it's going below something I've never had before. Not really a fan of fish, except salmon, therefore don't like the fish so would normally have a sausage or even a pie. And then I don't really like chips because they're just way too dry many times, even with salt and vinegar.)
@@markdavies5068 I'll only agree with Chinese curry sauce instead of English, don't like them bits you get in the English. Then it basically becomes a Chinese so it doesn't count. You Me Sushi was my favourite takeaway when I lived in London. Shame they haven't spread. Indian food is awesome, although I'm a softy who enjoys a Tikka Masala. Maybe a Madras at most.
I’m just at home recovering after an operation. Too poorly for today but you can bet your sweet arse this has given me the starvers and I’m excited to scoff tomorrow!!
Wrong, Robbie. I'd say Kebabs are the best takeaway (i.e. post pub stumbling food), Fish & Chips are the best takeout (nip down to the shop and take home, then go to pub), and Indian is the best sit-down (late night post-pub if no kebabs).
I like the differentiation here. I tried to balance eating at all different times of the evening to make the list but it’s definitely true that some foods cater better to different stages of the night.
Indian and Chinese are incredible. My local Chinese does amazing “salted chilli chips” they are god tier and go with anything! But for me the best food in the world is Italian. You have pizza which is perhaps the greatest food in the world and then you have a so so many amazing pasta dishes. I would just finally like to add that people that say kebabs are only good when you are drunk are full of shit! They are amazing when sober as well :) but I agree you need a good quality kebab shop as some are very poor and there is nothing worse than an awful kebab.
Italian genuinely is the best cuisine! Technically China invented the earliest form of ice cream but I would still count the modern day equivalent as Italian. And you have wine, disarrono, limoncello etc. Italian is miles beyond everyone
I think it's important to consider the post night out aspect of a takeaway. Are we really having fish at 3 or even 4am? This list is probably more geared towards to either the pre night out, or after a couple of beers or the night in. Drunk you may also have different tastes to the sober you too. I would say Indian food is better than Chinese food for sure, purely on the likelihood of 'fuck it, I'll give this bash'.
