@SurvivalComms Hi Brett. A great idea with the shock cords especially as they eliminate the bungee danger. One just has to take so much care when handling bungees. I tell my lot use both hands and do not have bungees at head hight - ever! ATB. Nigel
Hi Andy. Great to hear from you I was getting worried as i got no reply to my e-mails. Anyway thank you for watching and commenting. stay safe. ATB. Nigel
Bravo Nigel... First Rate ! Two little items I tried and they worked well A) an aluminum expandable photographers Monopod (this is not a hiking pole).Twist to open & lock in place (from one or two feet to 6 feet - or anywhere in between). B) Tarp clips - attach to the edge of the tarp and provide you with extra points for staking or tying (they are like spring metal binder clips for paper but use a thumb twist for tension).

Hi Harry. Thank you for watching and commenting. The marine's knot is great and so easy and quick to use and one can use cheap cordage too instead of proper paracord. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
top tips ... while bungees are useful and i still carry and use some now and then, i am cautious having almost lost an eye once from the hook flying back. Somebody else i know had a similar experience so took some pliers and reshaped the hooks into almost eyelets, which seemed like a good idea.
Hi Neil. Bungees are good but they are, as you say, dangerous especially when one is tired, wet or wearing gloves. good idea about closing the hooks but I think I stay with the jungle knots. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
I use small loops of shock cord tied at the edges personally. It works good to give that extra bit of tension without the bungee hook danger you mentioned.
Thank you for watching and commenting and those kind words. The Y shaped piece came from a really old tent that had rotted away in an old store. I beleive it was part of a mountain tent with an external frame. The tent may have been made by a firm called Vango. Try "teknopaul.weebly.com/" they do something similar with a 3D printer. I hope this helps. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel

Hi Aaron. You are perfectly correct especially in 'cleg' ridden Scotland. Thank goodness most of the time in North East England we do not have a big problem with biting bugs. In your area I would have to do a rethink. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
@@pnyarrow its a simple task. Either a good tent. Or mosquito netting for your shelter. If a lavues then make a canvassed bottom or have mosquito net. Actually if its not going to rain you could get away with just the netting. But we have so many trees you could get away with hammock camping. We have many public sites and dispersed camping here. The boundary waters is the best place to go. Lots of fishing hunting camping swimming canoeing and so on. If ever in these parts? I promise you will be able to be left to your self and not have other campers on top of your site. Plenty of wild edibles. And all the fat wood you can carry. Its probably worth the trip if you can afford it. No poisonous snake or spider or any other critters. Wood ticks and thats about it. Um 99percent deet is a good thing to have as well as mosquito netting . We do get lots of rain . We do have cold winter. The ice gets three or four feet thick. About a meter think by the end of December. So if your a out doors man? You would probably enjoy it here. No bugs in the spring and less in the fall. Hot in the summer and winter you need the right clothes.
Very much like the “ locking knots’ solution to tension paracord and can’t remember seeing that tip before

Them type shelters are fine where there is no mosquito. Here you need a bug net at the very least.
