  • Dual classic winner California Chrome successfully debuted over turf in the $300,000 Hollywood Derby (gr. IT) Nov. 29 before the biggest crowd of the season at Del Mar, when he defeated Queen's Plate winner Lexie Lou by two lengths in a sterling performance.
    Victor Espinoza was once again aboard the versatile California Chrome for trainer Art Sherman and owner/breeders Perry Martin and Steve Coburn. Displaying the form he showed in winning six straight races before finishing fourth in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), California Chrome completed the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:47.88 over firm ground.

    The energy the crowd gave Chrome when he came onto the turf was absolutely amazing. Almost the same as the breeders cup. I'm glad to have seen both live. Amazing race, amazing horse, amazing story.

    I was seated in the syretch area and, got to watch California Chrome win this race. He was amazing, with plenry of energy left
    Such a beautiful horse, and a true champion. We Chromies had a blast! Lexie Lou just couldn't compete. I am still in awe of Chrome and just how great a thoroughbred he truly is. HOTY!!!

      He got BOTH.......won Horse of the Year and Champion 3 Year old! woot woot. AND he won NTRA's Moment of the year taking the Kentucky Derby which is a hard race to win.......AND he was voted number one horse for the Secretariat award by Mrs. Chenery Vox Populi. Was a great year for Chrome. What a ride he gave us, huh? AND we got to watch it all because they shared his work out video's and "around the barn" pictures and video's and Kat wrote the Chrome Diary's with lots of pictures. Taught us ALOT by seeing all this. What's involved with an Athletic race horse. WOW. Amazing. He sure paid his way in 2014, that's for sure.

    Short of if he'd won the Belmont Stakes and completed the Triple Crown or won the Breeders Cup Classic, California Chrome probably just did more to increase his future stallion fee by winning the G1 Hollywood Derby on turf than he could've done by winning any other G1 race on conventional dirt because breeders are very keen on breeding to horses who are proven G1 winners on multiple surfaces. Looked to me like Chrome skipped over the grass about as easily as he handles conventional dirt. He won this race for fun.

    I love this horse,bcuz Everytime time I see him run win or loose it reminds me that u can come from nothing and make it big in life.If you look at his mama and pappa this horse shouldn't be in this stage and the fact that he has done so much is inspiring....

    I love this horse. This was his third time on turf but the first time competing with other horses on turf and he overtook them all! He looks fabulous!

    Seeing him race on grass and WIN is such a thrill and Chrome loved it. Chrome is amazing. Now that he's finally gotten a good rest and turn out at Taylor Made, I hope he comes back blazing. He always puts his whole heart into every race he's been in. GO CHROME!

      Art's a darn good trainer. AND he still believes if he put Chrome in one more race before the Breeders Cup Classic....he would have won it easy. Needed one more race before. Even Victor said that. They should listen to the Trainers more. oh well. He took Third and I'll tell ya....that was an awesome race. AND I was glad Chrome started way out in gate 12 somewhere.....wasn't in any of that Bumper mess by Bayern. That's all he'd need.........get his leg/foot slaughtered again. And listen to people's remarks about "geez, Chrome hasn't even raced in four months"....well, wtf......I wonder why. LOL he was healing. Gotta pay attention and follow the whole story people. geezuz. That BBC was a thrilling race boy.

      California chrome deserved to win

    • @Rimfaxe96
      @Rimfaxe96 9 років тому +2

      G.D. I If he did he would have won, simple as that. He didn't have enough strength to run a racetrack the length of the Belmont Stakes so he wasn't worthy of the Triple Crown. There's no "deserving", it's the performance that matters.

    • @GaryDIdiot
      @GaryDIdiot 9 років тому +5

      Rimfaxe96 He was injured during the race.

      G.D. I Then he wasn't fit enough for the Triple Crown, simple as that.
