I hate most algorithms. I wish we just had the most recent posts on top and we could just see everything from people we already follow.
Hank Green had a good video about the differences in monetising UA-cam/Insta/TikTok, saying that UA-cam gave you a better share, but they also force shorts to be shorter than two minutes, which is really fun for some content, but overall isn't going to be great as a replacement. Also, the interface on shorts really is terrible. IDK, friend. I'll stay here.
If the government is stupid enough to ban Tiktok, people will adapt. New apps will be made, old websites and apps will be utilized, etc. I just imagine it will be very hard for a lot of people to transition and build up an audience on a whole other platform again. It sucks. I think booktok needs a bit of revamp anyway lmao some of the babes aren’t even reading!!!
Good, I’m glad a TikTok ban will affect publishing. That app along with a few others have ruined what books become popular and how readers find book suggestions. Now if someone could just take the self publishing button away from all these authors with zero depth, maybe we could actually get a good story.
With more creators also comes more viewers and more people in the community overall is good for everyone I think. That may even expose tiktokers to a wider range of books and readers/creators--hopefully diversifying the books that are getting read. Tiktok has helped foster lots of new passionate readers, but it also uplifts *a very specific type of book.* That, however, also feeds into those books getting more of the resources from publishing. If we assume publishing has a limited amount of resources, it could be for the better if more of these resources go towards making and advertising better books.
Kinda wish we could get rid of all short-form content for the sake of everyone's attention spans. I say this and do not have atiktok but I have fallen into watching short videos on fb, insta and youtube. And I wish we could just get away from that.

I'm sorry all the US booktokers are losing their platform and I'm quite curious to see how this impacts the publishing industry. Will publishers look to see what the next largest book community is? I'm also lowkey interested to see how that impacts all us on booktube., cause a lot of us have been "TikTok made me read it!" or "Latest tiktok drama" and the algo seems to be eating that content up. So besides possibly bring new creators and viewers to booktube, we'll probably get some new trends in what people want to watch. Very excited for that as often it felt like people were rushing to hate on booktok or praise it when it was often like "why we even care?"

I'm an oldie (i guess) that just never got into tiktok. Didn't understand how to use it for content or for just viewing, but again while I rely on my phone for a lot? I'm old school with a lot of other things in needing a proper computer, like to make content and edit and post content. It would be nice if Google/UA-cam would make the Shorts interface better and all as a result of this. But yeah, it's not going to affect me really. Even as I plan to launch my book channel, I wasn't going to touch tiktok, just maybe get a bookstagram. I mostly find new recs through youtube and twitter/blusky. I am curious about these new book focused social media places, but no energy to check them out myself atm. XD
This is exactly why I have been backing up my youtube content since day 1 *knock on wood cause we don't need that energy here* but the reality is that apps and platforms come and go depending on what going on in the world. I will be upset about it for sure but booktube has always been here.

I agree with everything you say. Right now, it's on Justice Roberts's desk. He can vote by himself if he wants the court to hear this. It's one of the perks, I guess, of being the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. I also think that the publishing companies will have to go back to how they use to publish. And that will be a bad thing for those that want to publish more diverse books. Publishing houses won't have the guarantee that the book will sell like they had with tiktok. However, if the court does rule that the ban does violate the first amendment, or Trump tells his Attorney general to not proscute, if the Google and Apple stores don't take it down. Then that will make the law very hard to prosecute.
