What one thing people forget about the original deal is that Tampa Bay area hasn't seen a Major Hurricane in 100 years. On top of Milton, this was a 1 in 1000 year rainfall event. There is a metric for this. That event is quantified as 8 inches of rain in 3 hour. St. Pete got 9 inches in 3 hours, 5 of those inches they received in single hour prior to the roof falling. This wasn't just a hurricane, this was a hurricane Tampa never seen before in the modern era.
Exactly. Milton was the first direct hit to Tampa Bay in over 100 years and actually was predicted to be a little stronger when it made landfall. The timing of the hurricane, plus new St Pete council members, makes for a tough situation for the Rays to be in.
This is like buildings only being rated for 7.0/8.0 or below earthquakes in California. Even though it's only a question of "when" not "if" an earthquake above 8.0 will happen. It's much cheaper to not plan for worst-case scenarios. And that's what they did here.
@astropunk972 That was ALWAYS a foolish assumption on their part, because it relied on data related to THAT particular city, not the fact that Florida as a state is hurricane ground zero on the planet. Complete idiocy to think a major hurricane could never happen there.
Unfortunately, thanks to climate change, 100 and 1000 year storms are now annual occurrences… But don’t worry, the fossil fuel companies are working hard to pay off US politicians to continue to ignore the obvious problem!
This is really so sad to see and I feel really sorry for the fans of the Rays. I've been following the updates from a UA-cam channel by the name of Brody Brazil, if you want to stay updated on this they are a great resource to get a solid understanding of what the details are and what Brody thinks all of it means.
Announcement any day now: The Rays have been sold to Bell Canada and being moved to Montreal where the team will play 3 seasons at Olympic Stadium while a new ballpark is constructed. Team will be renamed ‘The Expos’ and all games can be seen on TSN in Canada.
The Sutter Health logo behind Kavel’s shoulder as he spoke about staying in Oakland is just priceless. Like Sacramento was just looming in the background
It's not their responsibility. Contractually it's the county's. Who's refusing because they have bigger priorities which is Hurricane Helene & Milton recovery.
I just came from your video about players not wanting to play in Sacramento. Well I really would have preferred to play in literally any other park than Stienbrenner feild after the Ray's battled this constant reputation for being the AL East farm team.
I think MLB in Florida to date has been a failure. Neither Miami nor Tampa Bay has ever been able to get decent attendance. One could argue the issue in Miami is the on field product, but the Rays attendance isn’t good even when the team is playing well.
Except when they brought in the Marlins that team won 2 world series pretty quick, plus a ton of teams have spring training down in FL so I don't think they plan on removing baseball from the state
They should of kept the area in Ybor City open for a stadium. The Marlins stadium issues and financing is the real reason why Florida, it's counties and municipalities want no part of the funding. IMO, moving the Rays to either Charlotte ( and ending the blackout between Atlanta and DC) or Nashville seem feasible. Moving the team to Montreal 30 years after the last strike and the attendance issues they had might make them be cautious
6:58 why not? The Jays played playoff games in their minor league park in 2020. The question would be, what would happen if they play the Yankees in the playoffs?
Tampa needs to build a stadium in Tampa or at least close by. The commute is too far for those who live in Tampa. The crazy thing is that George Steinbrenner field is in a great location for local to come support. At this point, they might as well move to Orlando if they don't figure it out.
I literally drive from downtown st. Pete to go to buccaneer and lighting games and happier sit in the “far commute” Tampa Folk need to stfu tbh it’s literally not bad at all
@gibing108 congratulations to you but are you the exception or the rule? Also, keep in mind that location matters to any business and St Pete is not a good location for a major sports team
@@IAm_DrLoveJones there 941,000 exceptions unfortunately that want a team that has a owner and leadership who actually gives a fuck about them, Tampa Bay is a community that I’ve been born in and have lived in for my entire life, I’m not from Tampa, I’m from Tampa Bay, Seminole loves the rays just as much as my 80 year old uncle in plant city, St. Pete having the Rays is just how it is and how it should Be, with an owner like Jeff Vinik who actually cares about the community of Tampa Bay none of this bullshit would be happening
I grew up in the trop I was going to games since 2003 when I was a kid. Ive always loved it and never understood the hate... It has AC and it does what its supposed to do? I genuinely don't see the problem with it or why people need to have a multi billion dollar stadium to watch a baseball game. But that's just my opinion a native Floridian who's been going to games almost since they started playing
“Not even in Tampa Bay” it’s literally in Tampa Bay, also, I happily drive 45 minutes to an hour and a half to go to buccaneer and Lightning games from St. Pete because of traffic without traffic, it takes about half an hour to get from downtown st. Pete to downtown Tampa, Tampa Bay is a combination of multiple cities and towns, The Tampa Bay Rays Play in Tampa Bay, they have always been in Tampa Bay and I hope they continue to be.
It's completely fair to clown on the place the Rays play but saying they should leave which is what I have heard a ton of people say not really sympthatic to the fans who would just lose a recently good baseball team all because of a once in a lifetime storm and a corrupt ownership and political commission party to cry at each other about money and mistreatment. It just feels like two people having a pissing match while the fans (not to mention all the jobs that will be lost) are in the middle of it
If a tree falls in Tropicana Field and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? That was always a joke I liked to crack about the Trop's abysmal history of attendance, playing off on the old philosophical paradox a bit (just with a Baseball twist). But if the Rays did move, and Tropicana doesn't have Baseball anymore, I guess I lose my running joke. That makes me a touch sad I must say. Still, would have happened eventually. Tropicana days were numbered anyway in any scenario. Ah, the Trop. It reminds of a Urinal stand. Servicable, but still damn ugly.
Tampa bay is an incredible market that can still make the team lots of money but they NEED TO MAKE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE 🤦♂️ if they don't get their ish💩 together they might lose their team just like the poor A's

FYI "Tampa Bay" isn't a city. Tampa is. The Tampa Bay refers to the water and surrounding region. Tropicana Field is much closer to the actual Tampa Bay than Raymond James stadium, even if it's in the city of St. Petersburg.
Here's my fever dream fantasy...the Rays do indeed move...to Montreal. And in a marketing bid to ingratiate themselves with the locals, they rename themselves the Expos (and that sort of thing has actually happened before in Baseball history; refer to the Senators). Speaking of Washington, in a creative moment of brilliance the MLB owners then decide to approve a League swap of franchises. The Washington Nationals move to the American League and the new Montreal Expos move to the National League. Baseball gets the B-W Parkway rivalry between the Orioles & Nats that fits like a glove, and Expos renew familiar rivalries with old NL East foes. And the answer to your question is, yes, mushrooms & LCD are the drugs I'm on.
Oh, and let me add for those rolling their eyes about franchises swapping Leagues, let me remind you of the Astros & Brewers swapping leagues just little over a decade ago. Crazy can happen.
The Expos being in the AL East makes too much sense to then swap them to the NL. They’re geographically closer to all AL East teams which reduces travel costs and also they’d have natural divisional rivals in Toronto, Boston and NY who they’d play much more often which sells more tickets.
