I don't think Dr. Umar is inherently against progressive ideas and politics. It's just that his ideologies are based on black empowerment. I think people who see it as being prejudice or racist don't really understand the heavy plight that black people have faced and continue to face in real life, as how Dr. Umar has studied it
To better understand, imagine you have a child who is really behind in school. If you want your child to excel in school, you're going to have to give them less time on friends and games, and allot more time to read and study. Imagine the parents of excelling children then coming to you and saying, "You're abusing your child, let your child play and have friends, you're wrong". If they don't understand your child's academic situation, don't care or are just malevolent, it'll make sense for them to sound that way. Otherwise, they'd be supportive to get your child good grades
That's the idea with the black community. There's no strong economy for the average black person, no role models, fatherless/single parent homes, abortion and planned parenthood, gang violence, radical feminism, mass incarceration, police brutality, more severe sentencing in court etc. The playing field is not equal at all for the black community.
So Dr. Umar comes in and suggests that if black people are to level the playing field with whites, Asians, Jews or any other prospering community, black people are going to have to be selfish with each other. No interracial marriage, build businesses and schools just for blacks, real education that's not whitewashed, 2 parent households, learning to build a community, heterosexual relationships etc. In other words, for the black family to prosper into a prosperous black community, there are some progressive ideas which they cannot afford and have to sacrifice. And if you're really concerned with the plight of your own people, you'd make the necessary sacrifices for your people.

Most people are actually socially liberal according to polling. They're liberal on gay marriage, marijuana legalization, protecting the environment, criminal justice and police reform, immigration, gun reform and other issues. Maybe trans issues and operations the jury is still out on. That's despite all the complaints you hear in right wing media, Dem were able to survive midterms with few losses (also facing an extreme GOP). That's why studios like Marvel can withstand being accused of woke and still make money on Marvel projects because they know where they're audience is. Having traditional values makes you more likely to be conservative but you have many people raised with traditional values that aren't reactionaries like Umar Johnson. Hes popular because hes speaking to a reactionary minority that's scared of the change happening in society
