I just read that paper straws have “forever chemicals” PFAS (like Teflon) to make them water-resistant, so now that’s supposed to set up this big dilemma between paper straws and plastic straws. Why not waxed (non-petroleum wax, preferably) paper? Waxed paper used to be in all kinds of packaging, and for many things, it was fine. Yes, your ice cream sandwiches might not be so great if you kept them for half a year in the freezer, but would it kill you to just put them in a ziplock bag (which could be reused in most cases) when you got them home?
Kudos to you for this amazing discovery. I hate plastic! It causes so much damage to everything. Hope there will be many more alternatives besides using seaweed as there isn’t enough to replace plastic entirely I do believe.
Amazing video, yet again. Great to see that plastic can be replaced by an edible substitute, and very interesting to see that only plastic types 1 and 2 are widely recycled. We really need to hold plastic manufacturers accountable. Thank you Sam.

The first concern that my mind jumps to is the energy cost and money cost of producing this seaweed-based plastic replacement. You must take into account the total amount of energy it costs to produce a product, from the growing and harvesting of the seaweed, all the way to the transportation to actually get it onto the shelves. There's no point for major companies to adopt something such as this unless the cost to grow, harvest, produce, and transport it is lower than the current standard. At 9:34 , you mention how ease of recyclability is especially important for lower income countries. This is true. It is also true that those very same countries are tasked with producing the world's majority of products including plastic as a whole and aluminum. This requires energy to produce all these products. Energy requires money. And without money, your energy production (and therefore production as a whole) is severely reduced. In short, *money and energy are directly correlated.* These lower-income countries are exactly that, they have less money as a whole. Therefore, they turn to cheaper energy production methods for their typically much larger populations (China and India), which usually ends up being coal. This is why "green" energy methods are so hard to switch over to. Think about how much more money and energy itself it takes to mine, refine, and build batteries for all the solar and wind plants and electric vehicles than it costs to simply mine, transport, and burn coal. Wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear power all have much higher costs to produce the same output than the current coal standard these countries have become so dependent on. It's not sustainable, not as they are now. (This is also why I put "green" in quotations) Wind and solar are simply not as energy dense as natural gas or oil. I wish it weren't true, but it is. Until advancements in better battery technology, lower cost for material production, or general output of solar, wind, and other green energy methods are made to be more efficient and cheaper than the currently already cheap methods of using coal, natural gas, and oil, these megacorporations are never going to switch to "green" energy methods and plastic replacements anytime soon. All in all though, I enjoy watching your vids about all this new tech that is coming out. It's very informative and important to bring these otherwise brushed over tech and the people behind it to light. I hope to see it one day become a common replacement for the current standard.

This is amazing!! I use seaweed in my gardening all the time. Love seeing new products from seaweed! Hemp is also another product that can be used has a plastic alternative and can be composted. My only concern is that they respect the ocean and do not strip seaweed from that ecosystem. Thank you for sharing!
Yess I asked that question too, I have an extended version of the interview I was going to post on my Patreon which is just the raw interview so i'll do that soon!
Another way to help change the system is to invest in companies like this. Unfortunately, very few videos mention this or give links to companies that can be invested in. I would really have loved to see that mentioned in this video and seen a link to contact the company about any investment opportunities that may be available. Possibly, an idea for a future video? Green investing would help us further projects like this. It's just a thought. All in all, I truly love your videos and look forward to more in the future!
Great video, a great concept (which for the edible water / juice has been tried before by a company called "Ooho"), hopefully advancements can be made and it can go mainstream, but the answer regarding the hygiene of the product wasn't of satisfaction for me, didn't really answer how it can be safe to consume Edit : wow, actually, this company was actually Ooho before they rebranded as Notpla, glad they kept doing it
A Mexican company makes cutlery made from Avocado pits and in Indian plates and cutlery is being produced from sugar cane waste. It's a start in reducing plastic trash. Thanks for your videos!
Can't wait to talk to talk with our students about these improvements. Shocking after a few weeks this is not more popular! Come on UA-cam. Do your thing!
God that is so cool! I had no idea this solution existed and this video inspired me to make a game about how ineffective plastic recycle can be. But I also have a question about solutions in Canada. I do buy bulk foods with my own containers and such but are there any resources for Canadians you can recommend?
Incredible content! I absolutely love your way of introducing brilliant innovations that are helping our home planet 🌎 💖. I’ve been looking forward to your book for quite a while now!. I’m all about climate change and I just know this book is going hold so much about it.. especially written by an author that I very well connect with! ❤❤❤
This gives me hope 😊 I wish more and more companies would use alternative packages if necessary to use them, and that gov would help too, for example by regulating one time use plastic by putting tax on it? 🤔
whenever i dump stuff into the recycle bin, i keep thinking most of it won't be recycled. That's why if i can i try to reuse everything and will always try and buy stuff in glass jars if i can. our system is broken.
Looks good... holds liquids but instantly dissolves in mouth. How does that work? What if they get wet before going in mouth? Do they stick together when packaged together, and then tear? Is humidity a problem? rain? How strong are these packets? Do they bite open to release contents? Need LOTS more information about practicality.
The outside material is a little different to the inside, and it requires heat as well as liquid to dissolve. You can actually store the pods in water and they won't dissolve - so long as it's kept cool as well!
I’m left with a question. Production aside, Costs wise how competitive is this with plastics now? Could say a waterbottle company replace plastics with this in their production at around the same cost? Or will it be up to new companies heading for the niche markets?
Yess I actually asked this question too, I didn't make the final cut but if you're interested I posted the full uncut interview with Pierre on my Patreon page which shows a few of the other Q&As including this one that weren't included in the final video 🙏🏼
@sambentley It's great to see this fantastic packaging solution is being scaled up, with seaweed grown in an eco responsible way that benefits sealife, and their continued push for innovation to create other types of sustainable packaging. It would be great to see companies starting to use these packaging options for their products. What are NOTPLA doing with the waste seaweed after extracting the gelatinous material, so that they close the loop and have a circular business? Is it usable as a natural seaweed fertiliser/soil enricher? Thanks.
OOOOOoooo this is so Solarpunk I love it! Comment for the algo! Bamboo and hemp are great solutions to sustainable alternatives to tree made paper products as well. They are like the three sisters of sustainability. Kelp, Hemp and Bamboo call save the world. Oh I forgot, I own a Lomi kitchen composter and I highly recommend as It can turn bioplastics like NOTPla into garden compost along with other kitchen scraps. I'm not affiliated with the company. Just a very happy customer. lol
Wow! What an amazing company with a fantastic idea! And the gelatine is not made from animals - hooray! If I was starting out or even mid-career now, instead of 71 and retired, this is the company I would want to work for. It deserves to expand worldwide, and all plastic production should be stopped now.
Teysha Technologies is another cool company that are battling single use plastics with their biopolymers that are made out of animal feed stock! Their bioplastic can be tuned to degrade at different rates
The frustrating thing about platsic bottles is that 99% of the time - outside of disaster relief - you dont even need to consume those things. They are either sodas and artificial juices that are terrible for your health or water that you can just carry in your own bottle. The whole problem shouldnt even exist!
Its excellent for all fast food packaging, food trucks, delivered food, cafeteria to go on and on. This alone is huge. However plastic creates a food-safe barrier for food shoppers in grocery stores. Plastics freezes so you can buy frozen goods that you can see the.. quality of. You remove the plastic wrap from items you bought because of all the handling it had before you brought it home. These are important safety and health issues. I could see mayors and councils requiring biodegradable non-plastics for temporary packages. It would reduce alot of plastics for takeout containers. I would invest in this one for that purpose...go big with that!!

Must keep growing unlimited amounts....unlimited renewable seaweed products....
Aloe vera can also be used for the same things.
Great video, a great concept (which for the edible water / juice has been tried before by a company called "Ooho"), hopefully advancements can be made and it can go mainstream, but the answer regarding the hygiene of the product wasn't of satisfaction for me, didn't really answer how it can be safe to consume
Edit : wow, actually, this company was actually Ooho before they rebranded as Notpla, glad they kept doing it
A Mexican company makes cutlery made from Avocado pits and in Indian plates and cutlery is being produced from sugar cane waste. It's a start in reducing plastic trash. Thanks for your videos!
Awesome to see you on here! Great video 👏
Thanks Julius! Happy to be here!
I came from tiktok! You are the most positive person I've seen in a lot of social media platforms. Thank you for sharing these news ❤
Aww thanks Anna great to see you here!
Such an amazing invention! I always enjoy your videos. It's nice to see the positive side towards the environment. Thank you for your video 😊
Thanks Danielle!
Can't wait to talk to talk with our students about these improvements. Shocking after a few weeks this is not more popular! Come on UA-cam. Do your thing!
I looove your video, Sam!! It is so inspiring. Keep shining as you do and thank you for your content! We appreciate you!!
You are so welcome!
God that is so cool! I had no idea this solution existed and this video inspired me to make a game about how ineffective plastic recycle can be.
But I also have a question about solutions in Canada. I do buy bulk foods with my own containers and such but are there any resources for Canadians you can recommend?
Congratulations to go from Instagram to You Tube!!! Great to have longer time to see all the good stuff happening!!
My phone knows me so well. Showed me this video then I saw yours on tiktok after
Haha wow your phone knows you too well!
Ah amazing I appreciate that!

This gives me hope 😊 I wish more and more companies would use alternative packages if necessary to use them, and that gov would help too, for example by regulating one time use plastic by putting tax on it? 🤔
Love all the good news! Love the innovation! Just love it all!
Im glad you love it!
This is awesome and has been a long time coming! Thank you all for your discoveries! 💙
whenever i dump stuff into the recycle bin, i keep thinking most of it won't be recycled. That's why if i can i try to reuse everything and will always try and buy stuff in glass jars if i can. our system is broken.
yesss reusing is key!
Fantastic product, looks like it could be used to replace a lot of plastic wrap as well
I wonder about that!
Plastic manufacturers should pay for all this!!
The fossil fuel industry would likely join in to block this.
FANTASTIC bro! Love it.
Here he is! Thanks Derek!!
Fantastic video! Great company with wonderful ideas and values. ❤
Super friendly on the shoot too!
Sounds like such a Winning idea !!!.. Every country Should be looking into this technology !!
So Glad it showed up in my video feed .. 😊
Love this and all your videos. Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much Sam for sharing some good news, which seems like these days is very scarce.
Amen amen amen!!!!! This is 100% necessary for the world!!!!
Thank you, Sam! Love u! ❤
Thanks.
After extracting the gelatinous material they make products like paper with it, check out 4.35 in the video 🙏🏼
Just a very happy customer. lol
This is so amazing!!! Super insightful and interesting, thanks for sharing, Sam!! 💚
I appreciate what you are doing! Keep up the good work. Let's spread good habits to the world and save our planet.✊😊
So awesome! Thanks for sharing about this awesome innovation!
Wow! What an amazing company with a fantastic idea! And the gelatine is not made from animals - hooray! If I was starting out or even mid-career now, instead of 71 and retired, this is the company I would want to work for. It deserves to expand worldwide, and all plastic production should be stopped now.
You'd be a great addition to Notpla Linda!
@@itsSamBentley Thank you! 😊❤️
Absolutely brilliant and absolutely about time 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Diane!
That table display reminded me of a tide pod, yumm
What a great video! Thanks for sharing this amazing solution!!
You are so welcome!
Impressive! Looking forward to it! Wondering what type of gelatin they’re using for now?
Teysha Technologies is another cool company that are battling single use plastics with their biopolymers that are made out of animal feed stock! Their bioplastic can be tuned to degrade at different rates
Will check them out thanks for sharing!
Amazing!! Love all of your videos, thankyou for what you do, you’ve really helped me a lot!☺️
Thanks Tessa glad you liked it!
Absolutely great discovery!… nature will love it! ❤
I think so too!
How is that different from the gelatin covering garlic oil, in so-called garlic pearls, and other such medicines?
The frustrating thing about platsic bottles is that 99% of the time - outside of disaster relief - you dont even need to consume those things. They are either sodas and artificial juices that are terrible for your health or water that you can just carry in your own bottle. The whole problem shouldnt even exist!
100%
Amazing! Thanks for sharing this wonderful new invention!
You’re welcome!
Thank you. such a wonderful post to view and share and use inn the future.
Soooo goood.Thank you for giving these informations.God bless you.
