Not sure how true this story is, but I do remember hearing that at the Premiere of First Contact, Avery Brooks leaned over to Micheal Dorn and said something along the lines of “I don’t remember giving you permission to take MY ship into battle without me” with a contrite Micheal offering a “Sorry Sir.” In return. Just one of my own fav out of Universe Defiant moments that I heard of that I just had to share.
The original script of First Contact had a scene where Sisko orders Worf to take the Defiant to engage the Borg while he was going to put together a small task force in case the Dominion “take advantage of the situation” Instead they lifted most of that conversation to Picard and Riker in reference to The Romulans.

That said the DS9 tech manual is dubious...it isn't as solid as the TNG one and has a lot of conflicting information from what i understand.

Lack of connection between DS9 and First Contact is unfortunate. Even though FC premiered in Nov 1996, its stated Stardate, and FC uniforms, places it firmly in, say May, 1997, giving DS9 six months to come up with a kick-butt story of how Worf and the Defiant held off a Borg Cube singlehandedly, to allow Starfleet to e mass a defense in Sectir 001.
Yay, promotions all around 106k subscribers, Sing in Wembley Stadium, it'll be amazing :) Great video, some parts I did not know about the class, nice one Lt.Cmdr Adam.
Something glossed over, in the tech manual. The bridge is not deck one, but recessed in a bowl in deck 2. To make it a much harder target to hit. Also the defiant top speed was 9.5. It would fly apart if it went faster. It’s top speed was comparable to a nebula class.
Well done again with your 100k. I love this 'little' ship. If memory serves the class 7 Warp Core was actually designed to be installed on a ship 3-4 times the size of the Defiant. Also I thought the Defiant could only go to Warp 9.6ish but i could be wrong. Also the Borg attack in First Contact must have occurred in or after season 5 as the new FC uniforms did not arrive to ds9 till episode 10 of season 5. So the Defiant would have been around since the start of season 3.

The Defiant is a tough little ship. It makes me fantasize about Star Fleet designing and fielding a full sized balls to the wall battlewagon designed to go up against, the biggest and baddest warships of the Federation's enemies
I had the Original Series technical schematics set that had blueprints for both on screen and referenced ships and technology. From day one there were more dedicated fighting vessels including the Dreadnaught Class which is what JJ Abrams based the giant ship in Into Darkness on. While the Defiant may have been the first purpose built warship as she lacked the typical dedicated science labs, she was not the first ship to focus on combat. The Constitution class (the Original Series Enterprise) was heavily armed and manned but due to limits in film technology and studio issues we rarely saw the Enterprise use it’s capabilities as the class was designed to hold its own on long duration exploration missions without nearby support and to rapidly interdict if the Klingons should move to engage the Federation or its allies. In Undiscovered Country it is implied that the Starbases and Space Stations served as bases for dedicated defense and combat vessels or a dedicated war fleet. We also see ships like those used for the Jupiter Defense Perimeter in Best of Both Worlds Part 2 and in several episodes of Enterprise that show ships that appear to be purely for defending the Sol System. Also in the technical schematics set was a ship very similar to the USS Kelvin except it had a HUGE phaser emitter similar to what was later seen on the Enterprise D Galaxy Dreadnaught seen in All Good Things and a reinforced forward saucer for RAMMING just like Picard did with the Enterprise E in Nemesis except as a tactical design similar to how the Jem’Hadar attacked the Klingons during the later parts of the Dominion War- but with the goal of surviving the ramming attack. Essentially a single nacelle with a reinforced saucer module using a massive phaser to knock out the shields of a Klingon D7 cruiser and then finishing them off with a ramming attack through the neck that connects bridge and engineering sections.
First Starfleet Ship modelled after they shot Gene Roddenberry's ashes into space. Of course all the ST ships in the early series and movies were warships except the Grissom. Buuuut we're a peaceful service that shoot at lots of stuff and are packing pistols as well. Ablative shields are surfaces that wear away to protect the main hull material. Ablative heat shields IRL were sometimes made of wood. IOW ablative shields might work once or twice. The ship violated several of Jeffries and GRs rules. One: Nacelles are not in line of sight as nacelles build a warp field from the field built between them in open space. For that 3 nacelle and 1 nacelle ships in the post TOS book were fun drafting exercises for the author, but violated rules the boss had written.
The Defiant was assigned to DS9 in 2371 (The Search aired in September 1994). The battle of sector 001 took place in 2373 (First Contact was released in November 1996). By what definition is that "just after the ship is assigned to Deep Space Nine in the first place"?
While not cannon there is also the U.S.S. Monitor from the Star Trek books an all black ship with a special warp drive that didn't have the normal blue lights for the warp drive plus a trans warp drive a cloaking device and more weapons basically an amped up version the Defiant
There should have been a whole fleet of Defiants, but that would have been too similar to that concurrent scifi series about a space station situated near a galactic transit point featuring a small overpowered prototype starship.😉
Jellico was a different type of Captain than we've seen before in Star Trek. That doesn't make him a bad Captain. He didn't collaborate as much with his command staff as Picard did and that rubbed them the wrong way. They better chew harder, because that's tough. He's more cofident in his decisions and/or arrogant, and didn't feel he needed to open it up to the rest of the command staff. A four shift duty rotation sounds easier than a three. Theoretically that means less time on duty.

Might be too early, but I want to see you cover that weird Section 31 variant of the Defiant from the most recent Lower Decks episode if there's more info on that
There seems to be the implication that Sisko at some point managed to pull a few favors with the people at the shipyard and had the Defiant equipped with Ablative Armor off the books, something even Starfleet Operations didn't know about.
The Defiant's very existence is a testament to the adage of "Don't Fuck with The Sisko."
