The first soldier that got killed in the Yugoslavian wars was a Macedonian. Without all of the states in the Federation, Macedonia didn't wanted to be part of "Serboslavia" as one polititian called it.
Also, interesting that you mentioned the 2001 armed conflict, as all of the western countries, USA included (which were also involved in it) refuse to let the people know about it.

@@MisterJovke Actually, the number of Albanians in Macedonia increased only when they become refugees from Kosovo. Macedonia was forced by the west to accept them and they decided not to leave. And when they decided to work in wester countries, they still kept the documents with double citizenship. The problem when their wives give birth to 16 children didn't made the things easyer as most of them later did not had legal jobs.

Good video, just to add few things.
Yugoslav army wasn’t ready to fight on another front. They also fear that Macedonia might get backed up by Bulgaria, So Milosevic and Gligorov negotiated peaceful solution but Macedonia had to agree to hand over entire weaponry that was on Macedonian territory which was very sizable even in today’s comparison.
Also low key Belgrade hopes were Macedonia would not be able to establish itself as a sovereign country and will crawl back.
The actual problem that Macedonia have had since its independence is the Albanian minority that shows no loyalty towards the country even today but that’s another topic

One comment about Slovenia. When the conflict in Slovenia started, the army was still the Titoist/Yugoslav/"unionist" factor in Yugoslavia. Serbia wasn't very willing to fight that war for the reason you said - there aren't that many Serbs in Slovenia. With their withdrawal, the army lost its unionist character. When Macedonia declared independence, the army was now acting in the interests of Serbia, it lost its Yugoslav character, and since there weren't many Serbs there, a reason to fight was non-existent.

I have a friend from Greece who is actually Macedonian. There are some inside of Greece, mainly up against the border on the Greek side. Needless to say they are not very well tolerated in Greece. His grandfather was actually the priest in the village between the wars. The Greek government would not allow Macedonian in the schools and not even in the church. The village had to employ a Greek police man whose only job was to come to church, sit on a chair in the back and make sure that the priest did not preach in Macedonian and no part of the Divine Liturgy was allowed to be in Slavonic, only in medieval or liturgical Greek (which Greeks can barely understand). Otherwise he had nothing to do. He was apparently a big, fat guy and sometimes he would fall asleep in church and start to snore. Everyone else had to stand as there was only one chair and it was for him. Possibly confessions were heard in Macedonian or possibly prayers for the sick in private homes, but that was it. As soon as the Second World War ended or even before that point, the civil war started. The partisans came down from the mountains, drove out the priest and his family and made the church a communist club. My friend was a little boy and his mother, the priest's married daughter, hid him under a stack of wood. Otherwise he would have been taken for "education" in a communist country. His sister was bigger and could not be hidden. She was taken off to Czechoslovakia and was only united with her brother in 1968 during the Prague Spring. My friend thought that there was no future for him in Greece once the communists were driven out as the royalists were not much better when it came to Macedonians, so he immigrated to Canada. I think that some people did return to the village, but very few.

One of the recurring mistakes in politics and war is to underestimate the opponent/s.
Back in 1989 I was travelling in (still intact) Yugoslavia and I saw what was unfolding. I warned people against the power of outside divide-and-rule.
Do you know what the most common answers were?
    - Don't worry, these are different times and we are civilized people.
    - Croats are married to Serbs, and Muslims are now friends with Christians
    - Can't happen here, we are sooooo economically connected on different levels
    - We've been culturally together so long, we can't be divided
_Russia wanted Yugoslavia to remain intact,_ *and the USA/EU/NATO wanted to break it up into smaller, less powerful pieces/states it could use as extensions of the own power, access economically and militarily into the Balkans and the adjacent Black Sea, and squeeze Russian influence out.*
    Guess who "won"?

The Macedonians did not violate the rights of the minorities living there, especially the Serbs. Furthermore, Serbian civilians in Macedonia were not attacked, which cannot be said of the Croats and Bosniaks.
The civil war in Bosnia was caused by violence against Serbian civilians in Sarajevo. Furthermore, the then "president" of Croatia, Franjo Tudjman, withdrew all voting rights from the Serbs who had lived there for centuries. This meant that they could not choose from the very beginning whether they wanted to remain in Yugoslavia or not. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what triggered the civil war. There was a war in Croatia because Croatia wanted an ethnicity homogenous country and in order to do that, they started expelling and murdering Serbs, they were hoping JNA would not do anything like in Slovenia but after the open attacks on military barracks in Vukovar JNA had to do something, so they did a demonstration of force. As JNA was a multiethnic army this action wasn't really popular as other ethnicities didn't care about the Serb pogroms, so they did a half ass job and given that Croatian jna brass was giving information and working with the Croatian Army it was a mess. But still Croatia had no chance to win the war, so the western organizers ordered that JNA leave Croatia. After the UN disarmed the remaining Serb population Croatia was ethnically cleansed. Emboldened by the West declaring that Serbs are OK to kill Muslims tried to do the same thing when JNA left its territory, but this time the Serbs don't fall for the same disarmament trick and continue to fight until the Western powers are forced to intervene when the Muslim forces prove unable to destroy the local Serbs.

See East Germany for example: the divide between West and East Germany still exists, and the two regions require different policies. Implementing policies specific to Vardar Macedonia and gradually getting it up to speed with Bulgaria is much better than administering it directly. After all, the goal would be to have RNM as a member state of EU - so that Bulgaria would get double the influence on EU level.

I remember that time, yes, although I was a kid, we were so happy about having Macedonia independent from Yugoslavia and Serbia. We were thought that Macedonians and Bulgarians are same people and speak same language and we were expecting a similar warm feeling from our Macedonian brothers. We though experienced the interaction with people that were thought that we are from a different race - Mongols, from a different ethnicity - Tatars, from a different political side - fascists, with a different language - slavicised and macedonisiced Turk, close to Russian AND that we were the people and country that was and is the biggest enemy of Macedonia. Yugoslavia had made from these people real bulgarophobs and haters and also pure serbophils and schauvinists. 32 years passed and this is still valid, with the exception that many Bulgarians started reflecting the hate and the culmination was the EU Veto. The hate speech is growing on their side now with the pro-serbian government and I suspect this will reflect in Bulgaria again. This is exactly what it aims this hate speech, right - geopolitical close to Serbia, Russia and Hungary, and far from Bulgaria, Greece and the EU.

You can watch the interviews of the Greek Prime Minister then, who immediately rejected the plan. The reason was straightforward. The broader territory of Macedonia suffered a lot of conflicts before its liberation from the Ottomans, mainly because of conflicting ethnicities. Basically, after the 2nd world War, Greek Macedonia was 100% Greek because of the population movements, and there were no Greeks in the Yugoslavian Macedonia. Annexing the Yugoslavian part would be a huge problem for Greece, as they speak a different language, have separate churches, and have different historical roots. For Skopje, it made sense from a financial perspective; it would also give them access to the sea. The Prime Minister of Greece correctly decided that the best thing for that area was to be an independent state and join the EU to have stability. With the latest treaty, Greece opened the door for North Macedonia to become a member of the EU, but it is up to them now to enter.

"Therefore a deserved country was vulnerable to outside attacks" Right there it is clear these are all Western talking points. Are you not aware that at that time Macedonia was just a republic who is a part of Yugoslavia?! What outside attacks from an army who is already present in Macedonia from 1945? And how they were vulnerable when YPA was present in Macedonia?! Yes TD did lost the weapons. But why the YPA took them? Because in Slovenia separatist forces took TD arms, created their paramilitary and armed police and started attaching YPA barracks and coloumns. Macedonia wanted to stay in Yugoslavia to the very end, but they didn't want to participate in a civil war, especially in a war far from their administrative borders. They made an agreement with YPA about the withdrawal of the forces, YPA left without a fight, and all Macedonian soldiers and officers came back in Macedonia peacefully. UN forces were deployed on a border with Serbia and Albania.
Another false claim is that the war didn't happen because there was no significant Serbian population. Well what do you know, in Slovenia there was also no significant Serbian population, yet that didn't stop the war right? Because Slovenians attacked the YPA who was already in Slovenia from 1945. The truth was that Macedonians didn't attack the YPA. They didn't import arms illegally like Slovenia and Croatia. They didn't create their paramilitary. And the most important think they didn't want a war, contrary to Slovenia and Croatia.
It is clear that when you say Belgrade you think Serbia. But that is another false claim because Belgrade was a capital of whole Yugoslavia. And who was in charge of Yugoslavia at that time? It was presidency - composed of members of all republic, federal executive council - composed of representatives of all republics and YPA - composed of the people from all republics. When you mentioned Šešelj or Arkan it is indicative that you portrait only Serbians as extreme nationalists. But such marginal people were present in all republics who were in charge of their paramilitary or volunteers, but you didn't bother to mention them.
All and all, very one-sided and biased documentary. Hope you will do better in the future.

Greece occupied Egeian Macedonia 1913, but one day they have to give it back. Greece is a newly created balkan state of 1831, by Otto, they have no connection to the hellenic tribes from ancient times, they just strive to connect themsleves with the hellenic tribes so that they can brag about some madeup history. Also, the hellens NEVER had a state, they were just some small cities, in war with each other. Hellens should not be confused with Macedonians, who were part of the MAcedonian Kingdom! The hellens hated the Macedonians and called them barbarians, didn't let them join the olympic games! Macedonia grew very strong under the rule of Filip 2nd and his son Alexander, they conquered the hellenic tribes with ease and enslaved them. Today, greece falsly claim that the hellens and the Macedonians were releated, which cannot be further from the truth, they were seperate people, Macedonians were barbaric warlike nation with a strong Kingdom that eventually ruled the world, while the hellens were small, divided tribes that NEVER formed a Kingdom, cause they were too stupid and greedy. And finally 1832 Greece has absolutelly no claim on the weak hellenic tribes from 2300 years ago, this is just some stolen identity and wishful thinking of an artificial new nation.

@vasilmirmidonski2740 Yes this is true, I call myself Bulgarian and yes we speak the Slavic language. Old Bulgarians spoke the Turk language, but the same is the case with Russians. They speak Slavic language but Russo is Scandinavian who made the first kingdom KyevRus in the very same way Bulgar made the first kingdom. However people in North Macedonia are not Greek and they speak the Slavic language, not like Alexander the Great who (and his family) were Greeks and spoke Greek….. Slavic come to the Balkans between 3 and 6 century A.D.
I also live in Thracia (area) but I am not Thracian :) You may check information about the “Odrysian kingdom” 431-424 B.C (the same time frame as old Macedonia ) and compare the area of the Kingdom with the area of modern Bulgarian 1:1 mapping, but we do not call ourselves Thracian!

    • @andonrangelov8844
      @andonrangelov8844 2 місяці тому

@vasilmirmidonski2740 OK look, bela + zora is also the same in Bulgarian (бела зора) so for this I do not need translation : )
Slavic languages are Indo-European languages like Greece so they have a comment root. Some words may be the same but it does not mean it is the same people… It would be the same statement if you say that ancient Rome is English because some words are the same. Which is a wrong statement!!! For Thracian, it is even high speculative because they do not have a written language and they use Greek to write. Some historians say that Thracians are Slavs, but this is just pure speculation. I will be glad if Thracians are Slavs because they were living in modern-day Bulgaria, and then i can say they are old Bulgarians (but I do not think they are Slavs)…
I will give you another example the word “Буда“ (English spelling Buda) means wake up in Bulgarian (probably the same meaning in Macedonian) and in Hindi (also Sanskrit) it is “buddha” which has the same meaning, thus Bulgarian and probably Macedonian are Indians?
Of course, there are many other examples like this, but I am not an expert in languages.
So one need to specify when one language is different from the other, and normally it is when the two nations speak and do not understand each other (or they understand some percentage 90,80, 70 ..50 whatever). But there is no doubt that Alexander the Great was Greek, simply his teacher was Aristotle ; ) so they speak the same language (100% or 99% understand each other ….)

ANYWAY, if you go back 1-2 million years ago we all come from Africa and we have the same language : )
By the way, there are many Greek and Turkish words in Bulgarian language, I guess this is also true for Macedonian language. For example “Хиляда” in Bulgarian mean thousand and in other Slavic languages it is “тысяча” while in Greek it is “χίλια” . So are we Greeks?
Please don’t judge me for that. :)

@vasilmirmidonski2740 In correct written Bulgarian yes it is “Бяло” but in some parts of Bulgaria it is pronouns “Бело”. It is often that Я becomes Е Like “Мляко” (the correct written Bulgarian for milk) in many parts of Bulgaria is said like “Млеко” So if the stress is not on Я then it becomes Е. Dialects …. I think because our ruler during the communist time, Todor Jivkov used this dialect Млеко and Бело not to make him look bad the communist party allow as second official to be possible spelling.
The old Glagolitic alphabet is basically what Cyrillic and Methodius introduced as alphabet and the Cyrillic alphabet that you and I use nowadays is invention of Saint Kliment Ohridski. It is a kind of propaganda that Cyrillic and Methodius are the main characters where indeed the Cyrillic is thanks to Kliment Ohridski. This is a known fact but somehow the accent is still for Cyrillic and Methodius (not only in Macedonia but also in Bulgaria and in the rest of the Slavic world).
By the way the Bogomils movement is still present in Bulgaria nowadays, and I have some friends that are part of this movement. During that time of the year, Bogomils go high in the Rila mountain dress in white, and dance in circles.
I have been in Greece at the grave of Alexander the Great, of course the body of Alexander is not there thus difficult to say it is his grave, but there is such a tourist destination in Greece.
In Macedonia, I have been two times, in Ohrid and in Skopie. In Ohrid was very easy to understand the local people (especially the elderly population) in Skopie is not so easy to understand the local people (at least for me). I like Ohride very much and would like to come again in Macedonia, but I will wait till politics come down and Macediona is in European Union. But I see and speak with Macedonians every summer when I go to the Greece sea, basically in the north part of Greece there are a lot of Macedonians, Serbs, Bulgarians and Romanians.

“[FYRO]Macedonian nationalism, as distinct from other South Slavic peoples is, moreover, a relatively new concept, introduced and encouraged by dictator Josip Tito, upon the creation of a separate Macedonian Republic within the Yugoslav federation in 1946. Prior to this, the area generally known as Vardarska banovina (the district of the Vardar river) was considered simply an extension of its southern Slavic neighbors, either Serbians to the north, or Bulgarians to the east. Slavs arrived in the Balkan Peninsula only in the 6th century AD, and therefore have nothing to do with the well-known classical kingdom of Macedonia, which dominated the rest of Greece, the Near East, Egypt and Persia under Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE.”

The answer is simple. YPA (Yugoslav People's Army) wasn't attacked, nor their barracks were surrounded and attacked. Macedonians never stiked on the other minorities in their republic...no one had anything against. There was constitution from '70s saying that any Republic may get out of Yugoslavia if other republics agree to it. Which wasn't the case with Slovenia for example. In Croatia on the other hand Croats and Serbs were equal constitutional nations and both had to agree so independence could go without problems..which wasn't the case because newly formed Croatian authorities put out immediately Serbs out of constitution and made them minority, Cyrillic alphabet was expelled and many Serbs in towns were expelled from their jobs or homes...like Zagreb (Zec family) or Zadar (Zadar's crystal night). In Bosnia and Herzegovina on the other hand, three nations were constitutional (which means non of them could be called minority) and by their referendum, Bosnian Muslims and Croats were for independence while Serbs were against. Those two decided to ignore the constitution, following Croatian example...and decided to over vote Serbs...which was against the constitution...and we know how tragically it all ended for all of them. Macedonia was lucky...until the Albanian started their armed rebellion in 2000s..

Macedonians were wise, unlike Slovenians who chose to leave first, they waited a little. Actually Slovenia had a very short war, in fact, it wasn't really a war. The JNA didn't really attack Slovenia, it was rather a state of tension for about 10 days, with some people dead especially in Jugoslav army. Slovenia, like Macedonia and Montenegro were the republics free of Serbs(or with very small minority), so normally, they were allowed to exit Yugoslavia. Montenegro did it in 2006, it was close to do it too, during the Jugoslav wars, like other republics, but the president of Montenegro was a very good friend of Milosevic (who on its turn was actually Montenegrin not Serb). In Croatia and especially Bosnia, there were many Serbs, and wasn't really this the problem, it was the special status the Serbs had it in both Croatia and Bosnia, unlike in other republics, in these 2 republics the Serbs were considered a Sovereign nation (not a minority), even if in Croatia the Serbs counted to less than 15% of the population. Montenegrins are actually Serbs, no difference between them, Macedonians are a mix of Bulgarians and Serbs, and Slovenians are some sort of Moravians (a Czech variation).

Not only that, but Serbia and Greece offered to Bulgaria to partition and divide Macedonia between the 3 countries, yet Bulgaria declined.
In the end all we got is blame and mockerong fr[m the "nikogash" Macedonians of Skopje and at best in most case videos like this one which doesn't even bother to mention any of these facts.

Well, that "mini federation" part in the question was why the referendum was a success in the first place wasn't it? Referendum questions in other republics didn't have that ambiguous part. They cheated on the population of Macedonia which is until this day very Yugo-nostalgic. Together with 20-30% population boycotting Macedonia referendum would never be "successful", especially not with "95% voting in favor". Both Macedonian and Albanian parts of the population lived very well during Yugoslavia. Also, Bulgaria IS mentioned for doing very nasty things in Macedonia doing WWII and a lot of modern day Macedonians remember stories from their elders.

Yes, bcs North Macedonia still blasts state anti-Bulgarian propaganda and hatred in it's schools to this day.
Much like North Korea does towards South Korea, despite in both cases the refugees fleeing towards the "evil brethrens" and not away.
Anyone can check and verify this, ever since the start of the liberation efforts all the way to the end of WWII the vast majority of Macedonians fled to Bulgaria the most. You can hate us all you want, but that fact won't ever change.
The aim of Bulgaria for Macedonia has always been freedom and sovereignty for it's ppl, even at the cost of their Bulgarian identity.
And today you have that, it's up to you how you use.

Whine all you want, but you wouldn't be a sovereign country if it wasn't for Bulgaria.
Greece and Serbia were ready to partition your territory. All Bulgaria had to do was say yes or stand idle.
As for the "history, language and ethnic identity" you know (or at least you should by now) very well that this isn't just a matter of simply acknowledging "your language", given N. Macedonia is serving as Russia's proxy in their attempts to lay claim over the Slavonic languages. Their attempt to brand it as "Ancient Russian" was reject by any respected linguist and scholar, then they shifted to the "it's actually Macedonian", despite literally every single author, even and especially the earliest ones explicitly stating that their "Macedonian dialect" which they wrote in was indeed part of the "Bulgarian language".
"Mirror" or "Огледало" is 1 of the many examples of this.
As for the history, if you mean the stereotypical examples like King Samuel or Goce, the Bulgarian historians told yours "Give us a single source, where Samuel is described as a Macedonian king and we'll accept your claims" and they couldn't provide even a single source, bcs there is none.
The claim has no basis and relies entirely on Yugoslav and Comintern propaganda and made up fictional history, like the non-existent "Komit Nikola inscription" where it's claimed that "the Macedonians were thanking him for fighting the evil Bulgars". This is only made more absurd by the fact that Samuel died of a stroke from the sight of the blinded soldiers HIS Bulgarian army by Basil II (nicknamed the Bulgar Slayer) who was of the (Roman, NOT the Ancient) Macedonian dynasty, started by a half Greek, half Armenian guy.
As for Goce, he wrote himself by his own hand and free will "си сме българи", which in N. Macedonia is claimed to be "him joking" (how and why exactly, it is never explained, just stated). It is yet another example of how your allergy and hatred toward anything Bulgarian, which you;'re are taught since the day you're born, prevents you to acknowledge even basic facts. Even the Macedonian historians don't deny that Goce was a Bulgarian. Your former president also stated it.
      And last, but not least.
We are not "denying your identity", as I've mentioned, Bulgaria was the first to make the crucial step toward your recognition as a sovereign and a SEPARATE nation. And we still haven't changed our stance, even if we may have arguments about the language and history, your identity and right to self-determination is not being argued or denied.
At least we can agree on 1 thing, that you don't need to look back at the present, bcs you should be more concerned about your future given your current President statement that she "sees Serbs and both sides of the border... if there even is a border". Yet, you remain blinded by your hatred towards Bulgaria which is the only thing you see.
As the Bulgarian saying goes, "каквото сам си направиш, друг не може да ти го направи (причини)".

You omitted likely the most influential factor: the UN peacekeeping mission Operation Able Sentry which placed US boots on the Macedonian border that essentially meant any Serbian attack would constitute an attack on US/UN soldiers and escalate the conflict. It was a major roadblock to Serbian military movement.
