    So interesting. I spent some time in Greece many years ago, as a poor young backpacker, and absolutely loved it. Spent most time in Athens and Crete. There were so many wonderful aspects to Greece but my most favorite were the people. They were the nicest, most generous and most welcoming of any of the European countries. I have nothing but fond memories of the Greek people. The Greek people are wonderful!!

    The BIGGEST problem with living in Cambodia, is that just about everywhere else is insanely expensive by comparison. When I first arrived, I stayed in a wonderfully-appointed hotel with richly-furnished rooms and a gorgeous swimming pool area in a lush tropical setting, across the street from the famous Pub Street area of town. The cost per night? $20. Same cost as the last time I was in Siem Reap, Cambodia in 2016. Now, 9 years later and the price has not changed. To stay an entire month, the charge would be $500. An ice-cold beer at a restaurant is 50 cents to $1.00 and a Gin & Tonic is $2.00. Meals are equally inexpensive at around $1.50-$5.00. My fully-furnished, newly-built 1-bedroom apartment is only $200. on a 6-month lease. Internet and water are free. A washing machine is provided as well as a 47-inch Smart TV. If I go back to live in the Philippines, everything by comparison will be 2 to 3 times more expensive. Cambodia has spoiled me. Thailand is cheaper than the Philippines, but the terms of their retirement visa is ridiculously complicated and expensive. After Cambodia, I don’t think I could handle the cost of Europe! 😬

      @@ianstuart5660 Very much so. Cambodia is full of very friendly, laid back people who gladly welcome foreigners.

      How long can a foreigner stay in Cambodia?

    • @wesgraham2262
      @wesgraham2262 2 місяці тому +1

      As a 55-year old foreigner, one can stay in Cambodia forever, 1 year at a time. Just renew the 12-month, “ER retirement visa” from within the country at the end of every year. No need to ever leave! But as a regular traveler, a foreigner can only stay in Cambodia on a tourist or a business/regular visa for 30 days.

      One has to ask oneself how Cambodia can be so inexpensive while everything everywhere else costs so much.

      @@amywalker7515 It’s definately out of balance, but no one here (including me) is complaining, not even the locals. Other countries could be more like Cambodia but choose not to… be more affordable and sensible that is.

    Amelia's perfect smile and beautiful teeth light up all of your videos. JP's comon sense approach to all things travel and living abroad, (and of course Amelia's input too), make this one of my favorite UA-cam channels. My day is always complete when I get to watch my "friends" discuss their incredible, (and sometimes daring), travel adventures!
    We loved Greece too! Some of my highlights: Beautiful and well-maintained freeways, kind people. Crete, Santorini, Delphi, and Meteora are must sees. Athens is so very drab looking compared to Paris. The Bread Factory is an incredible place for pastries and good food.

    We spent two weeks exploring Crete from west to east and really enjoyed it. Neither of us enjoyed Athens at all, we really appreciate smaller centres or rural areas where we feel we have more authentic experiences, and where the prices are more affordable.Just our preference. We rented a motorcycle and took a memorable trip to the north coast of Crete through a hilly rural area, stopped at a small village for lunch. We were searching for an archeological site which turned out to be a few stones in the ground, but there was a german restaurant right there playing oom pha pha music. Crete was occupied in ww2. We also had an accident when we swerved to avoid being hit by a car, bit the dust, and landed in the parking lot of a great restaurant in Hania. The owner took us in and fed us well. We were okay just scratched. I would check the fire situation if you are planning any travel to Greece at all. It is very bad right now and close to Athens. Cheers from western Canada where we have a serious fire situation as well.

    Ouch! I know we're on a hyper-reduced budget, but we're shooting for $35/night for lodging. Which pretty much has put Western Europe out of our price range. So we've been hunting around Albania, etc and finding equally as wonderful towns.

      Buenos Aires is ridiculously inexpensive right now with their monetary issues. We stayed in an entire furnished apartment in Palermo for about $22 a night back in 2022. By now it is even cheaper if you do AirBnB. If you stay in the "better" parts of BA, you are safe, it's gorgeous like Paris and you will never run out of things to do. If you are on a super tight budget, consider Argentina. I'm sure living in other places in Argentina it would be even cheaper.

    As a semi retired person I don't see how $3700 a month is considered affordable unless you've got a pretty good SS and retirement income combination. Yes, it's cheaper than the US, but for people like myself on low or moderate fixed incomes, this is way out of my price range.

      Hi. I'm a Greek. Where did you get that information ? What do you mean "affordable " ? "3,700" dollars 😂. With that money in Greece you are rich and nothing else. If you don't live in Athens a house of 80 squares can be around 300/400$ average or in some cases less (it depends where you live and there is many "unknown" hidden city-treasures in Greece that are cheap) . In my city and general place, with 800/1000$ you can find even a house with a pool (not kidding) (. (If you mean that you want to live in a house with a pool, for "affordable ") Anything above 1500$ you are just fine in Greece. Greece is not much affordable only for Greeks that our average income is around 800 to 1200 euros (and in many cases less) some times 1400/1500 euros but most ppl is in that range. 800 to 1500.

    • @Trophonius
      @Trophonius Місяць тому

      Greece is not affordable only for Greeks (but this also depends the lower economic classes are not in better situation in USA from Greece, from that perspective Greece has "better" economy ) not foreigners from West, USA or some European countries. Lately the houses only have gone up, cause they come foreigners from West (or other places) and we don't have to pay the rents that go up, and for other reasons of course, but this is the main) In the end you will not find any Greek here, all will have leave and only foreigners will live here. Greeks will be a minority

    I think you would like Athens more if you stay there during warmer months. We , my husband and I, spent 4 days in Athens this May. It was really great. The weather was amazing. It was our third visit to this city. Previous two were in July, so it was too hot to really explore the city.
    We visited Greece many times (mostly the islands) as this is my husband’s favourite country, due to its food :). This time after spending 4 days in Athens, we went for a week to Zakynthos Island. It was beautiful and very affordable too.
    FYI - We are going to Cuenca soon to spend there again (third time) a month 😄
    I really enjoy your videos on YT. We travel a lot too (a few months during a year) but always go back home. We returned home at the end of June after a long 4 month trip to a few countries (The Emirates, Oman, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Maldives, Greece, Egypt and Poland). It was intense travelling, definitely not a slow :) Looking forward to seeing Cuenca again 😀

I have been traveling Albania for two or three months, having just left less than a week ago, and had been actually working in a restaurant in Saranda. Thanks for the great report on Athens, Greece.
    $4,000 a month is not affordable to me, but I suspect it's easier to control costs for a single traveler compared to a couple.
    In Ecuador during the same holidays (Dec '23 and Jan '24) staying in Guyaquil and Cuenca hotels and in ocean view condos in Salinas cost me about $33 a night for 5 weeks and my longest stay in one place was a week, so mostly charged daily rates. Food (eating out almost the entire time) was about $15 a day for one (including alcoholic drinks every day.) It also didn't hurt that I saved over $5,000 on dental services compared to the USA. I can see why you chose Ecuador, and I'm looking forward to seeing your reports from SE Asia, especially Malaysia.

    Athens is in many ways great. Athenias do not appreciate how great it is. It is understandable when you are caught in the daily grind. Athens by itself has of course bad areas, good areas that look bad (due to construction in the 70s etc) but it also has great areas that are in reality rather cheap. Even Glyfada and Vouliagmeni are cheap compared to other European capitals and they offer access to great beaches and scenery. And you are always 1h away from the Saronic Gulf islands or the mountains, whatever floats your boat.

I'm always trying to stay long term, really missing that content as it is a much more complicated process than slow travel (with basically no process at all) I want to know about taxes, residency, investments, real estate etc. I feel like I learned so much about Ecuador because of the amount of time and experiences that you had there, these other locations not so much. You can't truly experience a place going through in a tour bus being driven like cattle down the main tourist streets and then buffet dinner in some hotel included in the package deal. Our best adventures are the ones where we just get tickets and go on our own with AirBnB, Uber and so good guide books. Interacting with the actual people of a country, eating in the smaller places and merely walking places, even if you don't spend a penny on extras have given us some of our best memories.

    thessaloniki is definetly worth a trip. sorry to tell you but you must have gotten a bad tip vis a vis athens. where you stay is very important and can make all the difference. and btw our friends moved to montenegrp because it was lower cost than greece. specifically from athens riviera to kotor bay. thank you for your videos.

      Wow. I guess they should just pull up a rocking chair. 😂 Age is a number. This lifestyle actually provides so much activity. It’s in part of why we are choosing it. We walk and move way more when we are traveling than being in one country. Plus, they already lived abroad full time. They didn’t leave from the US. Why would they return to the US?

    Greece will not stay an affordable country for much longer. Tik Tokkers and people who post their holiday are posting how cheap it is. The more people go there, the less beds available. The less beds available, the more expensive it will become. The more expensive it becomes, the less amount of tourists. Think about that.

    After 65 years in Australia i took a pilgrimage back home to greece. I realised the food in Australia is plastic. One can eat so much less in greece and be fully satisfied because its real. The flavour of vegetables and all things is beyond belief. Back in Australia now, struggling to eat anything. Its all artificial rubbish.
