I love Carreras's voice on this and other arias, yet I have to go with Neil Schicoff here. Powerful, powerful full of artistry, and what a crystal clean fine fine timbre of tenor! Very Best, Bravo!!
Age 30 and already a real artist, in one of his great roles. I heard him first 4 years later, as Edgardo/LUCIA in 1983 in Boston -- the Met's spring tour had begun. At that point he was singing with total confidence, his beautiful lyric tones draped over a squillo framework that was there whenever and however he wanted: A perfect example of "The free voice as an expressive instrument," this was Albert Innaurato's phrase that I first heard applied to Björling (with examples from JB's live Met broadcasts of 1941 Trov, '45 Rig, '47 Romeo, '48 Boheme, '50 Faust), but that phrase applied just as well to Neil then and throughout his career.
One of the most underrated Tenors...many great Tenors were overshadowed by the big 3
