    Maiden flight of this delightful ultra light motorised thermal glider.
    I used a 500mAH 3S Lipo and that worked well but it could also use a lighter 2S Lipo. Flies just like a DLG and would be a great alternative for thermal hunters who are unable to afford or launch a traditional DLG. It's a tricky build and could benefit from some mods - stay tuned.

    Looks like a great little bird. I'm glad someone has made this style glider as a foamie. I have a Great Planes Kunai which is cool but fast, heavy and not near as floaty. I'm going over to Banggood now.

    I modded mine heavily.. Put on proper dlg rudder and tail I had lying around, Glassed the front of the wing, cut a new hatch and changed all the servos.. 2 servos in the wing..
    Awg was bang on 300g with a 2s 500.... Thermals like a hot snot, but its so skinny that almost every flight I almost loose it, It goes up so quickly in Thermals that its quite difficult to see it and get it down out of the lift... I have put black tape stripes underneath the wing but it didn't help much, the profile is just too skinny to have it at height... I've set a ceiling now at 300 feet with it, that's about the limit of my visibility with it.. Good fun but a scary plane in lift...

      It'll glide even better once that's fixed as a freewheeling prop acts as a mild air brake.

    I thought you could set the esc from the tx on the beeps? set the throttle to max then plug in the esc and then count the beeps (past the normal throttle calibration) drop the throttle and it's set. I'm not sure how many beeps to the esc brake on or off though.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому +2

      Beeps are no different past the throttle calibration beeps, so I guess it's not programmable. I'm changing to a Plush so I can program it.

    vary nice glider

  • @krang07
    @krang07 7 років тому

    really neat, that one. only thing, for me anyway, is it becomes invisible sometimes because its so thin and flat. I might want to put long streamers on the wing tips just to make it a bit more easy to see from the ground. of course no one but me would probably do that but, that's just me. :-) to add: maybe just some bright LEDs would be better for LOS flying..

    What does this U-Glider weigh by the weigh?
    Caught my first ever thermals last Sunday. Hope to find a few more this weekend.
    I'm guessing that a dihedral glider would do better, but all I have at the mo is my flat winged 2.5mtr one. Heh, as soon as I showed up at a club meeting last year I was advised to cut the wings apart and angle 'em a bit. But I didn't. They don't flex at all and I like that. They've been super tough through the winter.
    Now I have a 1.5mtr, bought off some guy on Ebay, classic dihedral balsa wing, in hand to add to the next fuselage. Probably be a non powered 2 channel job. I'm hoping to keep the all up weight to around 350 grams. :¬P

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому

      I wouldn't worry about adding dihedral for your 2.5m, all of my big gliders are straight. Thermals are thrilling eh? Don't recall the U-Glider weight, it must be in the video somewhere.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому +2

  • @rmirov

    I've been flying a U-Glider now for a few weeks (incorporates all the mods and then some). I have a full INAV configuration and it flies very nicely. I have noticed however that when it picks up airspeed, for example after turning back into the wind after a downwind leg on a windy day, it sort of wags its tail. I think the issue is that the very long carbon fiber tail boom (square) is simply flexing. The control surface linkages seem very stiff. Anyone else see this?

    • @rmirov
      @rmirov 3 роки тому

      Actually it may be more that the fuselage / wing saddle itself is flexing so much that the wings can "wobble" some relative to the tail boom...

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  3 роки тому

      If it's just after the downing turn it's probably close to stall for a moment

    • @rmirov
      @rmirov 3 роки тому

      I've been trying not to make really sharp turns, so I don't think that's the primary issue. I took the wing off tonight and I think that the two hold down screws just have too much foam to go through before they get to bite into the blocks around the tail boom, so the wing mounting has way more play than it should. I'll 3D print some new wing plates that may be able to slide over the tail boom blocks and make it more ridgid. My kit arrived with the fuse severely crushed and twisted, and the wing just never has mated up very well even after a lot of work with a hot air gun to straighten it out - so that surely isn't helping. But with all that it has flown circuits around the field giving me 10.5 miles on less than 50% of a 2S 18650 pack, and sure has a gentle stall.

    do i have to angle the motor to the right or just straight up?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому

      Michael, my motor looks like it's mounted straight. But I would give it a tiny bit of down thrust because it pulls up a lot under power.
