    The Volantex Phoenix 2000 is one of the truly great foam aircraft. I've been flying the version 1 for years. I got it as the kit version and installed the Turnigy L3010B-1300kv motor which gives almost vertical climb. I usually fly it with a 1300 mAh 3S, This gives me 5 bursts up to altitude (until it's a speck) with enough reserve for landing go-arounds if necessary. I can quite often get 30+ minutes per flight on a warm summer's day. Fantastic plane. PS - because the 2M version is so good I thought the ASW 2.8M glider would be even better but I never enjoyed flying it as much as the Phoenix and sold it off fairly quickly.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  8 місяців тому +1

      I agree totally. The Phoenix 2K is better than it should be and the ASW28 is worse than it could be.

    Hi Andrew, I'm completely new to the RC glider hobby.
    I'm a little confused about one thing.
    I was under the impression that you have to launch into the wind and then track down wind to source thermals as the breeze passing you is directing you towards a close thermal.
    You stayed upwind in this video searching?.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  4 роки тому +1

      Practical reasons, down wind is a busy road. Thermals can be anywhere, just that they end up downwind after they pass by. Some areas of lift are stationary over a ground feature.

  • @steve97384

    Hi, great video, I'm looking at this thinking it might be a good return to RC after spending many hours doing this hobby as a teenager. Could you tell me what the variometer system is that you used with the glider. You need a bi directional transmitter? Or is it a separate system. Thanks

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  Рік тому

      Yes it would be a good choice for your return to RC flight. I'm using the FrSKY Variometer which needs a receiver that supports S-Port telemetry sensors. I have done a few videos on FrSKY telemetry sensors. They also make receivers with a vario built in.

    I still want glider, but having some new "thrills".
    The Phoenix 2000 has an amazing wingspan, while the skysurfer x8 seems to be more funny and sporty addicted.

    I cant find the perfect cg with a 2200mAh. On full throttle she climbs almost in a loop without elevator. But she glides very good. If i put the battery for more nose heavy, she dont glides good but climbs normal without almost looping on full throttle....what should i do?
    Also landing is a bit of problem because she is very fast even with flaps, but i dont clip it like you do for more degrees of flaps

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  3 роки тому

      Not a CG problem. Pitching up under power is normal for many gliders. Ideally you would tilt the motor down a bit more, but you can mix in some down elevator with throttle to stop it pitching up.

    I just got one of these gliders, it’s the first aircraft I had to put my own receiver in ( no safe or as3x etc) and it was a handful for me, it didn’t help though that the 2200 3s battery I had in it moved all the way forward! I safely landed it but a little afraid to try it again yet! I have a dx6 radio and other than naming the model and binding it I have no dual rates set up and I can’t get the flaps to work right. I have the flaps on a 3 position switch with the switch in the zero position the flaps actually go up a little, the middle position they are level and in position 3 they go down about 30 degrees. I just retired and well as you can tell I’m a rookie, if you have any tips etc I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

    • @AndrewNewton

      I would also suggest using velcro (fluffy to the battery, hooks to the plane) to keep the battery from sliding! The straps that are included only stop it from lifting and moving left and right, NOT backward and forward. I always give the battery a good jiggle to make sure there is good contact between the hooks and loops and turn the plane nose down and shake it once or twice to see if its stuck in well.
      Do your testing on the ground. Not the air ;)

    Bought the v2 after seeing your original review a year ago. Loved flying it but was using with 2200 3s to balance out a camera on the tail. Flying aerobatics and scenic stuff over the sea. Never got to thermalling or soaring. My bro in law wrote it off when I was teaching him on it unfortunately. I then went to a 1.7 fms cub and then a 3m fms fox which I'm selling as too big for the spaces I fly in. Really want another smaller glider but torn between phoenix V2 or the phoenix 2400 as would like the fact the 2400 is easier to see but with the smallest battery to get cg is the 2400 still worse at ridge lift or thermalling than the v2? Have watched your vids again on both but still can't decide. I really want a floaty glider that I can ridge fly (small cliff for me really in UK) that won't just stall without warning. Any further thoughts on either model much appreciated

    • @AndrewNewton

      Yes it is a beauty. Obvious differences are fuselage material, this is stiffer and shiny, addition of landing wheel, servos moved down back, larger cockpit area, wing mounting, empennage shape, and maybe wing area but I'll have to confirm that.

    I hope you see this! I was inspired to get this sailplane! Unfortunately I have only been rc flying since November 2020 and didn't think to look to UA-cam for help. My mistake was putting all Spektrum crap in it. Oh well. I went with a AR637T and a 6 channel transmitter. DX6e. UGH!!!!
    Even with a crap setup this plane flies an eagle soaring over it's prey! Once in awhile ill flip it upside down just to see if i can get it to drop all the crap electronics lol. now that I've watched a few of your videos im going to change the setup all together. Im not sure if I want to go full house yet though. Im still a rookie pilot wannabe. The though of gps and fpv are a little scarey to me but I think my best bet would be to get it set up for the future. Any thoughts?
    I have a couple easy flying videos. I live in Oregon and the couple times I flew on the beach, the wind was pushing south to north and made things a little weird. The following day the winds were literally 0 so i had to motor around to find lifts. I really want to get into ole school home built DLG. I get a rush watching some of the videos and imagine myself up there piloting around in a 300km circle lol

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  6 років тому

      That's normal for a lot of motor gliders, gliding properly and pitching up when you power up. You can tilt the motor down a little by adding some thin spacers behind the upper motor mount holes, or you can mix in some down elevator with throttle, or you can just control the pitch-up with elevator until you attain the height where you throttle down.

    There is no point buying this plane. Its not an upgrade, the fuselage is from an fpv model, not a "better" design from the original.
    The V2 is heavier, a silly wheel, w a Ranger body. Not streamlined, but well its the new thing so who does not like a new toy.
    V1 flies w a 3S
    V2 w a 4S (definitely heavier)
    In fact now more than ever I should buy a second V1 to have as spare before it is discontinued.
