The story of the video game revolves around a young woman named Gris, who wakes up in the palm of a crumbling statue of a woman. She tries to sing, but quickly chokes, and the statue's hands crumble, dropping it to the colorless earth below. After landing, continue walking forward and discover a series of strange structures that appear to be powered by mysterious points of light that resemble stars. The young woman can collect these lights to gain new abilities, such as turning into a stone block, and creating new paths made of constellations.
After reaching a central tower, the girl can travel to four new locations to collect lights and restore color to her world by means of statues that resemble the broken one in the beginning of the story. These areas include a desert filled with windmills, a lush forest, underwater caverns, and a world with buildings made of light. Along the way she encounters various living things, some of which help her on her journey, as well as shadowy creatures in the form of birds that manifest as larger monsters that threaten to consume her. The ultimate power the girl gains is the ability to sing again, bringing various mechanical plants and animals to life.
The young woman eventually collects enough stars to form a constellation path to the heavens, but the final path is blocked by the creature, which transforms into a monstrous form of herself and swallows her. She wakes up in an ocean of toxic black mud and swims to the surface. While climbing a tower rising out of the ocean, the creature tries to pull it back. However, the protagonist begins to sing and the statue begins to reform through the power of her voice. Just before the black oil completely consumes it, the statue comes to life and begins to sing as well, banishing the creature and the sea of ​​despair. The girl and the statue embrace through tears and she climbs the final path of the constellation while showing that the world has been restored in color and light.

Gris received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.
EGMNow wrote that "with a dazzling art style and an admirable commitment to minimalist video game design, Gris succeeds in turning a straightforward, often derivative platformer game into something that feels much more special and important."
