Get Smart parodied the secret agent genre made popular by the James Bond series of films. The series was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry and aired on NBC from 1965 to 1969. The final season aired on CBS in 1970.

Don Adams plays Maxwell Smart AKA Agent 86. Barbara Feldon is Agent 99 and Edward Platt plays Thaddeus The Chief - members of the secret US government counterintelligence agency known as CONTROL KAOS, the nefarious international organization of evil, is constantly trying to foil CONTROL's plans.
This video is meant to pay homage to the show that just recently celebrated its 55th anniversary. Whenever my wife did something good, I would say "good one 99." She would respond by saying"don't get Smart". To that, I would respond by saying, "ok Chief". Get Smart is the funniest spy sitcom ever. Rowan Atkinson does a good job as Johnny English.

"Craw, not craw!" That line alone stands out in my mind all of these years.

@@linsterlin9185 No, "Craw, not craw!" is the play on words as there is no "L" in the Chinese language. The "L" is pronounced as an "R" thus the play on words. When Max pronounces it as "craw" the Chinaman gets angry because of the translation error.
My favourite catch phase was "Why that's the second [fill in smallest/largest/fastest] I've ever seen" - Max could never admit that he was impressed or surprised by something and always had to be one better. So transparent! It became a catchphrase in our family too. I always giggle when I use it and someone asks "what was the smallest/largest?"
Don't forget, "And loving it"!
When I was a little boy in the early 90s, this show was on Nick at Nite every weeknight at 8PM and since my parents grew up in the 60s, I got quite a healthy dose of it.
In the '70s, once it was in syndication, it would play on one of our local stations four times a day.

I have very fond memories of this show when it first aired. I think it, for the most part, still holds up well. Very clever acting and good casting with great writing made it a stand out.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention Don's association with the game "skittles." He stared in a number of commercials for it. Skittles was a pub game adapted for home.
Don Adams was also the voice of one of my favorite cartoon characters, Tennessee Tuxedo!!!
He was also the voice of inspector gadget.

I was 14 when this show aired and I thought it was the funniest show on tv. I just saw a binge re run of the show on the decades channel and enjoyed it all over again. His catch phrases were so funny and I was trying to remember them all, would you believe, missed it by that much, I asked you not to tell me that,
"And loving it"!
I was in grade school in the 60s. The mid to late 60s was a great time to be a kid watching TV!

Get Smart was one of my favorite TV shows, along with Batman, Star Trek, Adams Family and the Munsters. I don't remember the comic books, but I do remember the novels.Max, 99 and Siegfried were my favorite characters. I believe the Smart catch phrases were taken from Adam's stand up routines. There was also a 12 inch record album of the show as well, that I played over and over.
I DEFINITELY like the original series the best. You can't beat Buck Henry and Mel Brooks!

All of Don Adams trademark catchphrases were part of his standup act before GET SMART, and were written by his
friend Bill Dana (Jose Jimenez) from the Steve Allen show.

As soon as the setup for the cone of silence starts I start laughing. You never know what's going to go wrong with it but you know it's going to be hilarious. My favourite is the Portable Cone of Silence!

Should have made a mention of the cartoon series "Inspector Gadget" for which Don Adams provided the voice. It borrowed a lot of elements from "Get Smart".
I was just about to mention "Inspector Gadget" when I saw your comment. It was basically Get Smart for 10-year-olds. Loved it and even introduced it to my children. When my kids were older we watched all seasons of 'Get Smart' with them too. Though not the reboot thankfully.
@@craigthacker Inspector Gadget was great - in addition to the obvious connection to Get Smart, it also borrowed elements from Inspector Clouseau, James Bond, Mission Impossible, and perhaps others.

This catch phrase routine was popular and done many times throughout the series, even with Siegfried. 😎
That's a Leonard Stern joke. It was originally used on "The Monkees" in a few episodes such as "I was a Teenage Monster" with Richard Kiel starring as the monster. Leonard was a writer for the Monkees before joining Get Smart. Some of his other jokes were recycled too.
Unlike everybody else commenting here, I loved the 2008 movie with Steve Carrell as Max and Anne Hathaway as 99, and I wanted to see a sequel to it.
This show was before my time, but I saw it in reruns. Get Smart is a hilarious show! I still love watching it.

@@FactsVerse I think my favorite scene is Max and the Chief were in a warehouse and Chief had secret info to tell Max. But before Chief could tell Max, Max insisted they use the Portable Cone Of Silence first. (The Portable Cone Of Silence was two clear spheres they put on their heads attached by a tube.) So they both put it on and Chief starts telling Max the secret info, but Chaos agents show up. Max got out of his side quickly and started running after them and shooting. But Chief couldn't undo his side to get his off. He was running around with the Portable Cone Of Silence stuck on his head. Oh man I was dying laughing! It still cracks me up every time I think about it.

The Sunbeam was a Sunbeam Tiger, designed in part by Carol Shelby who received a royalty for every one built. The Sunbeam 4-cylinder drivetrain was replaced with a Ford 260 V8 (later a 289), Ford aluminum case 4-speed, and a Dana 44 rear axle assembly with a pinon gear limited-slip differential. Radiator, brakes, suspension were all appropriately modified. It weighed less than the original Sunbeam. Note the mustang emblem on the front grill.
Yes, when Sunbeam (part of the Rootes group) was taken over by Chrysler the Sunbeam Tiger production was ceased (obviously).
During the 1980's Adams starred in a Canadian sitcom called "Check it out!" It only ran for three seasons and barely anybody remembers it. However according to Adams, he made more money on "Check it out!" then he made on "Get Smart". He didn't make much money off "Get Smart" which is probably true of most sitcom actors of the 1960s.
Fun Fact - the term "Good Thinking 99" is actually a common phrase in Australia to recognise someone with a good idea.

I never miss an opportunity to boast that my father who was employed at HSV 7 as programme manager was responsible for bringing Get Smart to Australia back in the 60's. The General Manager was outraged by my father's purchase, not believing that Australians would appreciate the humour. Dad was threatened with the sack on the spot but was given the benefit of having the viewing audience and the advertisers pass judgement on his decision. The rest was history. My father left the station on good terms several years later.
I say that to my daughter at one time and she looked at me like I had old timers decease and gone to live on plant America with the rest off the looney tunes!

Yes, but only amongst mid and late Baby Boomers, we were brought up on a diet of US sitcoms and BBC comedies, Get Smart was universally watched and quoted at school and more generally. It was quite American to us Aussie kids but not so much that we didn't get the humour. In comparison to what the Brits were producing at the time it was corny and slapstick but we still enjoyed it.

The "secret" to good parody is to play it straight. If you just read the scripts, other than the puns and wordplay it is a well-written show. The laughs come from the presentation and not written gags. Smart is actually a competent agent who solves the mysteries. Most parody attempts have the main character a buffoon. and thus the show fails (as you pointed out with the sequel).
My favorite commercial years after 'Get Smart' was off the air, was a 'fan' meeting Don Adams (who is on a date) in a bar. The fan annoys the hell out of Don Adams, rehashing his old Agent 86 lines ... and Don tries to be polite, but is obviously annoyed. Finally Don pauses, having taken enough ... asks if he can pour the fan a beer ... which of course, he accepts, and Don Adams pours the beer into the fans lap ..... Yep, he says it .... "Missed it by that much!" I rolled on the floor, and did every time the commercial was aired.
Back in the eighties there was an electronic game that randomly set up a murder mystery and you had to "interrogate" suspects until you worked out who dunnit. It came with instructions presented in the form of a vinyl record voiced by Don Adams. Long after I worked out how to play the game I kept listening to the record... 'cause it was Don Adams!

Actually, in the pilot, KAOS stole the Inthermo Ray and kidnapped its creator Dr. Dante (Dante's Inthermo-get it?) My favorite moment from the original series, hands down, is in the episode The Impossible Mission, when Max finally admits that he loves 99 and proposes (but, boy did they give 99 a godawful wedding dress!).

Max and 99 marrying killed the series. The sexual tension was part of the architecture, and it fell down once that was done. My favorite episode might be the Groovy Guru.

Have you done a treatment on Don Adams earlier roles? Particularly the Bill Dana show where he was featured alongside Jonathan Harris (of Lost In Space fame), and arguably where he created his "Maxwell Smart" character playing as a hotel detective.

My college alma mater's basketball team's alumni fan group sits in Section K, and at its zenith was a vocal group in what was often a not very noisy gym. It was said that some of the other alumni thought we should tone it down a bit. There were a few T-shirts produced for/by the group, and the best was Section Kaos, with the vulture in the original Kaos logo holding a basketball in its claws, and on the back it said, "Ve don't shush here!"
Max's shoe phone is in the International Spy Museum in DC.
The original series is in my memory as hilarious with F Troop the Adams family and the Munsters .. all classic TV for my black and white 70's TV

The original GET SMART Series was a great fun when I grew up in the Sixties and Seventies. My favorite was that opening scene with the shutting doors. I could not get enough of the classical show, so I watched all the reruns on German TV as well.
But the more modern Reboot was not so bad either.
BECAUSE YOU HAVE ASKED: AGENT 99 - it is based on the saying DRESSED UP TO THE NINES - so in reference Barbara Feldon was theoretically OVERDRESSED . nowdays that would be seen as a somewhat chauvinistic joke.
ANIMALS acting ACTORS on TV: Back in thoses yeaars the training metoods became developed and refined to male costs acceptable.
Kvan Tors (1916-1983 ) became here the groundbraker with shows like Flipper, Daktari, Ben the Bear or Skippy.
I always liked it when they used the 'cone of silence' which was anything but silent.
I still have a Bumper Sticker with Don on his shoe phone - "It's time to Get Smart. Wear your seat belt !" (A public service message of the Division of motor vehicles, department of transportation).

Get Smart was a great, funny show and the cast was really great.The theme song is really memorable just like all the others. The catch phrases were really funny and the plots were funny and clean

All those “doors” opening and closing during the opening and closing of the show induced an incredible amount of anxiety.... I don’t think I am claustrophobic.... I wonder what type of anxiety inducing phobia was triggered by those moments....

@@chaelwyper1729 Viewers were led to believe this but before the episode ended, she revealed that it WASN'T her real name after all, so the mystery continued, if I recall correctly. May've been the final-show of series, not sure about that.
Another interesting fact:-
Back then, there were no residuals for syndication. You got paid for your performance, and when it aired originally, and that was it.
The cast were given an option of being paid in one of two ways:- Take more money, and be paid per episode, or take less money, and take an executive producer credit.
Barbra Feldon and Ed Platt took the first choice, but Don Adams took the executive producer option, making him an executive producer along with Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.
Adams did this because he wanted to direct some episodes, and have some creative input into the show.
It also meant that, as a result, he was actually being paid less than the others, despite being the main star.
However, unbeknown to him, he hit the jackpot years later when the DVDs came out, as his estate got a cut of the DVD sales, since he was an executive producer of the show.
You are quite correct. But I'd like to point out that there were residuals for syndication back then - they've been available since 1960, and were automatically applied in actor's contracts. However, they weren't available as long as they are now - which is pretty much for life. As a result, the actors would be paid for the running of a specific number of episodes, but once that expired, there would be no more money.
Adams was a gambler, and had the foresight to realize the show had a tremendous amount of potential. According to what I've read, he never regretted taking lesser initial salary, because it entitled him to residuals in perpetuity when the show went into syndication, plus other income, such as the DVD sales, as you pointed out. This made him a wealthy man from the show with which he will always be identified.

FYI - in one of the near last episodes, 99 does reveal her name as 'Christine'. However even her husband Max continues to call her 99 even in the privacy of their apartment, or in subsequent iterations of the show & TV movies.

Mom and dad were the real deal. Overseas, super secret, clandestine spies. Mom on and off for ten years. Dad for 34. Dad loved the gadgets they would come out of "Get Smart". His gadgets were a heavy, two way radio and once a single shot pen gun. If he wasn't doing spy craft he was training and leading native special gurilla units in several of the little wars many don't even know ever happened. It was an interesting childhood for me.

Don Adams all the way. Corel could not play Smart with the same amount of being the " straight man " ie. unaware of his short comings. Which gave the show its humor.

Fans of the original may be upset with me, but I like both the original and the Steve Carrell-Anne Hathaway remake. The remake is more up to date and a lot more risque, but even that is nothing without the original.
Very sad to read that Ed Platt self deleted in 1974, but that's way too depressing for a list like this.
I was a huge fan of the original series, but I did enjoy the Steve Carell movie version. It was fun seeing how they tied it to the series.
I loved the Steve Carrell movie too; in fact, I like it a lot better than the movie he became known for, _The 40-Year Old Virgin_ .

The character was never referred to as “Max Smart”. He was “Secret Agent Maxwell Smart”, “Max, to his friends. Hearing some announcer who knows nothing about the show or the character, except what is in his script is really grating. Do a little research next time, writers!

i find it hard to believe that Barbara Feldon didnt like Don Adams from the start. They had great chemistry together right from the first episode.
That surprised me, too. Of course, one has to realize that most participants in a new series have no idea whether it's going to be a hit or not. In the beginning, the primary cast-members may view it as just-another, likely-temporary job, so no need to develop any serious-relationships. Chemistry can only develop over time. I agree, though--I thought Adams & Feldon had chemistry from the get-go. Perhaps if I go back & look at the very-early episodes, I may detect a workmanlike or businesslike lack of chemistry between them. All shows, whether comedy or drama, start-out far-differently than how they end-up, much-later in their run, if successful. "Green Acres" is a good-example. The early-shows & characters were light-years apart from where they ultimately-evolved, and what we remember.
Wasn't she mostly a model before "Get Smart"? Not really considered an actor? But she turned out to be so natural an actor, with great nuance and feeling, always organic and, really, the glue that holds everything together.
Yes, but it was so nice to hear her say that they eventually became very good friends right up to his death. She actually spoke at his memorial service and it was very nice.

Excellent presentation. I'd like to point out a few more pieces of trivia, if you don't mind.
You mentioned some of the commercials Adams did, and there were others that he did in the 70s that were very memorable. Who can forget the ads he did for Skittle Bowl, which were essentially a take-off on the movie "The Hustler." Although it didn't say he was Maxwell Smart, Adams was definitely using that personna to when he made those commercials.
But the best was a beer commercial he made several years later. He was sitting in a bar, as Don Adams, when a "customer" came over and said "Hey, your Don Adams."
The "customer" is rude and intrusive, using all the old catchphrases from Get Smart. From Adams' reaction, you could tell he was not pleased to be listening to this creep. Finally, he picks up a pitcher of beer, dumps it in the guy's lap, turns to the camera and says "Missed it by that much."
It turns out to be a lost cause because the creep fan just laughs and is delighted that Adams did it to him.
I get the feeling Adams hated taking the money for that commercial because - given the obnoxious fans he no doubt had to deal with through years - it was his way of saying to them "piss off!"
