  • Cooked some dried beans in one thermos, and rice in another thermos. I used about 20 cents worth of electricity, and about ten cents worth of beans and rice. This amount would have fed 4 people on a budget.

Back in 1996, the morning after Hurricane Fran came through that night, I swore that I'd have every way known to man to make a cup of coffee. That was in the days when we still had an electric stove along with an electric coffee maker. In doing our routine storm preps, I forgot to prepare to make a cup of coffee, FIRST THING, when I got out of bed. All the outdoor cooking stuff was crammed into a shed, along with our camping gear. Wood for the fireplace was sopping wet. Needless to say I was pretty frustrated at being deprived of caffeine for the time it took to take a sip of that nectar. I coulda made a Thermos of coffee before the power failed.
Thumbs up on another successful application of the haybale cooking concept. 👍👍 Good to know it works fine with beans and rice. I've never tried beans in a Thermos. Especially that bean mix, as some of them would take a long time to cook. Add beef or chicken broth to each in place of water. Flavor boost. (Or use powder/cubed bouillon.)
Looking forward to seeing more of your alternatives to an electric stove. Is your challenge having every way known to mankind to cook bacon? 🙂
Hope your back is better this morn. As always, hope you and Charly have a blessed day. Godspeed.

I may cook a stew in the thermos, or chicken in the solar oven. I haven’t made up my mind yet.

I don't normally eat beans and rice anymore. I store them as a last ditch survival food if I am starving to death though. My family like beans once in a while. The way to make them quick with minimal power is to pressure can them. You can do a large bath and the will stay good in the jars for years. I also have a good pressure cooker that I can make the quickly in if I am not going to store them

The only thing that I can think of to save energy would be to use extra water when boiling the beans so that you can measure out 2 cups to add to the rice.
Though that might add a bean flavour to the rice.
Also, you poured out a nice start to a soup when you strained the beans.

I’m sure that in times of duress, nothing would go to waste, including the bean water.

Oh buddy! Beans in the drain. One winter, some large lima beans got away from me when washing them and down the drain.
They swelled up and the drain froze. After a wet frozen cussing fest, I was amazed at the amount of limas that got away. There was a serving of beans in there. Sneaky legumes! I’ve vowed not to allow that again.
So, today. Your full of bean?😁

Good meal, but soak your beans overnight and dump water to get rid of the lectins because they are terrible on your tummy. At least you know you can have beans and rice.
Oh and Charly is right, 2 to 1 ratio on the rice, probably won’t be mushy then.
    Have a blessed day everyone!

Usually the beans need more cook time than the rice. I think you would have to use the boiling water because since they are thermos even though black I think they would insulate from the heat if the food wasn't already started with the hot water it would take a very long time, if they end up cooking at all, in just sun. Though I do wonder could you make bean soup like you make sun tea.

    • @bctruck
      @bctruck  Місяць тому +1

In 7 hours in the sun, the internal temp went from boiling, to 160. That’s not a bad loss. I may try a stew next time.

@@bctruck Those are good thermoses. I have one like that but not the same brand and it will keep ice icy for about a day. I haven't tried keeping hot hot in it but cooking in it was a good idea and I might try that. I do like the multi bean packages. Whether they are or not they seem like they would be better for you with all the different kinds.
