    What a delight to watch ! THANK you for sharing ! Carol Matthau was one of Oona Chaplin's best friends. They had known each other since they were youngsters. The long happy marriage of Charlie and Oona is incredibly heartwarming. This is from 1975....Mr Chaplin would pass away two years later.

    The part where Charlie grabs Oona's hand and she grabs it firmly and recoils self consciously, guts me. Just by their body language you can see how much they adored each other. Then ending with the old man with the cane, reminding us of his beloved little tramp walking off into the sunset, only now the cane is real and he's doing the best he knows how.
    Bless you Charlie Chaplin. As depraved and war like as the world and the human race feels too often, I think things would be worse if you hadn't given us the Little Tramp. The little guy, no matter how bad things got, always sought to do the right thing, and made us laugh through the struggle.

      Older Fathers tend to create children with lifelong heart health - that is a fact. If a man of 50+ years has the income to provide for children until they can provide for themselves, why shouldn't he make a houseful of kiddies? Charlie's record proved to be especially sunny, in that respect.
      Best thing that could have happened to Charlie and his family was to be "kicked out" (by the moronic McCarthy-ist retards of the USA) ; his final home proved to be his Heaven on Earth, surrounded by the love of his adoring Oona and their children.

    This film was so touching! I loved this! Two people who were so in love with each other. I like Attenborough 1992 bio film, but it was lacking. I long to see another bio film on him and one on Oona. She deserves a film too. I think she was the great love of J.D. Salinger's life and that he never got over her. She was the daughter of Eugene O'Neill who treated her and her brother Shane badly. Her friends have said that she could have been a talented writer. She could have been anything she wanted, yet she chose Charlie Chaplin. Good for her and him. If anyone knows of a new film coming about him or herr please post it.

    I wonder how Chaplin would have reacted to the portrayal of him by Robert Downey Jr. in Attenborough's biographical film in 1992. In many respects Downey's performance was uncanny, although the film was lacking in many respects. Chaplin was a true creative artist and a genius in terms of his physical comedic abilities. His work in The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator and Limelight will live forever.

    • @ladycham9775
      @ladycham9775 9 років тому +9

      MrImiller07 The original movie was 4 hours long. Attenborough was upset he had to cut out 147 minutes so it could be shown in cinemas [time is $$$$]. He said it severely altered the film and wasn't complete. I'm unsure if you could find the director's cut, but if you could, it would be worth it.

    The Chaplin's guests in this video are Walter Matthau and his wife, Carole Marcus Matthau, who was a dedicated friend to Oona O'neill Chaplin from the age of 14 to the end of Oona's life in 1991 at the age of 66.

    Growing up I didn't even know he was British. But his accent sounds so sophisticated, it's hard to match with the antic-like characters he portrayed. I can't imagine that voice coming out of the Tramp. No wonder he did silent films :)

    I so agree. Charlie Chaplin is always with us, in our hearts and memories. He gave so much, brought us to smiles and tears too. He was a character made of strong stuff, yet he also had a heart which reached out to so many of us and this dear gentleman had a wonderful way to communicate. I know that the world will never see such a remarkable actor again who brought so much joy, laughter and nostalgia to us. RIP Charlie.

    I bought the Gentleman Tramp on DVD and was not disappointed. My favorite footage is extra video of Chaplin's 1972 Oscar appearance when we see the celebrities gather around Chaplin (Jane Fonda and Jack Nicholson even shaking hands with him) the closest thing is was disappointed with was there was no other footage of Chaplin in 1975 in Vevey other than this scene (and a brief 3 second moment when he looks to camera and says "I lived a hell of a life") but from what I have read, his mental health was slipping by this time (even at the Oscars, you can see that great mind struggling to find words to say thank you) he was two years away from meeting his end on Christmas 1977.

    This is Richard Pattersons excellent A GENTLEMAN TRAMP documentary. Mr Patterson has pressed and published it himself on DVD (very professionally done, with a fab booklet) and you can find it by searching GENTLEMAN TRAMP on the USA Amazon site (cant seem to find it on UK Amazon) you will notice the seller is the man himself, Mr Patterson, so any questions about buying can be asked directly via Amazon. Ive got this in my DVD collection, excellent item.

      When you view a life closer to its sunset than its sunrise, it's easy to lament the twilight of their place on earth. A vibrant soul now seen in struggle against the ravages of time can seem tragic and too short. Yet our passing, no matter when it comes, brings us into the light of knowledge and reason. And all we have ever wondered is answered and all who were ever loved are returned. I would not hasten my life's end but I will not mourn its passing either. A person pressing further into the other end of life comes to know that the game, well done or foul, is best played in laughter and passed on in joy. Charlie Chaplin played in laughter not sadness. Sadness is not for those who die. Sadness is for those who never lived. Charlie Chaplin lived. And for a time, watching him on a screen, either long ago or yet to come, those lucky souls remain, laughing and in love. What greater joy than a life so lived. So, live life, Eileen. And give more than you're given. Then you will know the joy of life, even at it's passing.
