I love this scene. I think it also shows Clarice getting to understand her advantages as a woman and learning to use them. She was very cold to Chilton from the start, which makes their relationship icy when she needs it to be smooth. I feel like she flirts back with bug guy in part because it builds rapport. You also see her lean on her femininity to get the men to leave, and she calls Crawford out. There are so many moments that remind you she is a woman in a predominately man's world, but never makes her feel weak or incapable. "Everyone trying to take her out" - yeah, and she works with it!

The movie does it so well too. It's not the modern bs of "anything men can do women can do better" stuff. She simply uses her intelligence and femininity in good and respectful way to get things done.

How did Hannibal escape the country? This is pre-911, pre-internet, it was much easier to take shit with you on a plane, and get away with fake id’s. It was a different time. Cell phones existed since the 80’s but hardly anyone had one. But car phones were more popular around this time on the consumer level. My dad had one in his Mercury Cougar. 😂

The role of Clarice was originally offered to Michelle Pfeiffer- she turned it down because it was too dark... Jody Foster leapt at the chance and knocked it out of the park- winning her 2nd Oscar for this performance. Hopkins took classes before the film on not blinking- he wanted Lector's stare to be menacing/terrifying. The year it swept the Oscars- Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay, Billy Crystal was hosting the show- to open the show, he had himself wheeled out like Lector- with the face mask and straight jacket- the audience, including Hopkins, loved it.

1991 was a different time. Cell phones, the internet and really hardcore security standards at airports were in the future. Cell phones were luxury items. The internet was being called the Information Superhighway. Airport security was relatively lax. They still tried to keep you from carrying guns onto the plane, but you could go right into the airport section without checking through things and you could meet people just coming off the plane.

He only knew the first girl. It took them a while to figure it out because she was the third one found and they had to figure out she was the first killed, which made her the obvious subject of Lecter’s hint.

Unfortunately, now that there's true crime availbale for watching and listening to 24/7, I've become desensitized. The next movie, Hannibal, is pretty good and worth watching. Also, Gary Oldman is in it. Need I say more?

  • @lordwalker71
    @lordwalker71 Місяць тому +5

The story was partially inspired by the time that the FBI asked serial killer Ted Bundy to create a profile of the green river killer, when they eventually arrested him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where Catherine is kidnapped is also inspired by Bundy because he would pretend to have a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something into his car so a woman would offer to help and then he would hit her over the head and push her into the car.
Buffalo bill was Inspired by several killers but mostly Ed Gein who besides killing a few people he would dig up recently buried bodies and then use their parts to make things like a pair of gloves and a lampshade made from skin and furniture made from bones and skulls.
I read a few months ago that the actors who played Buffalo bill and Catherine actually dated during the filming of the movie.
Jodie foster said that Anthony Hopkins improvised the line where he insulted her shoes and her accent, his insult about the accent hurt her because she said worked hard to perfect a West Virginia accent.
Everyone makes a big deal about her getting too close to the glass of his cell but it would be very thick plexiglass not regular glass. They also get bothered by her telling him too much about herself but her being open to Hannibal is what made him want to help her.

In case you missed how "Multiple" Miggs died (criminal in cell next to Hannibal), Hannibal actually talked him into swallowing his own tongue and commit $ui$ide. This is just how good he is at getting into others heads, and why Jack Crawford told Clarice NOT to tell him anything personal about her, "That last thing you want is Hannibal Lectre in your head"
P.S. I believe "Multiple" was a nickname for Miggs because he most likely had multiple personalities.

It’s intimidating as heck to be the only woman in a room full of men. With guns. Just…doesn’t feel good. No matter how tough we are - men are usually stronger. It’s a sucky feeling. It’s why women(this one) are drawn to true crime - we’re always looking for signs and/or to prepare ourselves for the worst. What to do if u’re attacked, kidnapped, etc. It’s weird. Givin’ u boys a peek behind the (scaredy) curtain.😉

I think you would be interested in an excellent book about avoiding being the victim of a crime then. It’s called “The Gift Of Fear” by Gavin de Becker. He has given advice to celebrities (among other people) on how to deal with stalkers. One of the most important points he makes is that being charming is not, at all, the same as being good. Many people mistake the two when interacting with others. They mix up acting nice with actually being nice and get trapped as a result. I highly recommend the book to anyone, especially women.

But he got denied when he applied for sex reassignment surgery because he wasn’t really a transexual. So he decided to make himself a skin suit that he could wear, to pretend to be a woman. He knew the first victim but the rest of the victims were chosen because they were size 14’s which is what he needed for his skin suit. All of this was explained in the film!

Sometimes people's wondering how Hannibal get the pencil. I think we can guess it by the line of Lector talking to Dr. Chilton during their conversation. He said ".... I have my own condition "
That line tells us he had some chance to steal it even though it is not shown in the movie.

Haha, it was a hoot watching you guys react to this. I watched this in the theater and it made me really jump in places. Brilliant book, brilliant film! Btw, Clarice didn't know Buffalo Bill had no way out of the basement. It was her first time at his house. She had expected to find the seamstress Mrs. Lippman there. She stumbled on to BB instead. And she was still in training with no field experience, so she couldn't react quickly to him getting out of the kitchen with his hands up. I found the whole thing quite realistic. Jonathan Demme sure was a great director. RIP to a real talent.

Anthony Hopkins gave one of the greatest and unforgettable performances in cinema history.
The crazy thing is that although he’s a cannibalistic psychopath we the audience secretly are on his side and want to him to escape to freedom and it’s down to Leckter’s sinister but seductive charm.

This movie and the Texas chainsaw massacre is kind of based off of this grave robber/killer Ed Gein, he was like a psychopath that collected human skin and made furniture off of it.

Buffalo Bill is also based on Ted Bundy since he used to lure in his victims (also women) in the same way by pretending to be injured and needing help loading or unloading something in his car, then knocking them unconscious.

I really hope that you'll react to Michael Mann's "Manhunter." "Silence of the Lambs" is the sequel to "Manhunter." "Manhunter" is based on the novel "Red Dragon." "Red Dragon" was adapted into as a film a second time but kept the novel's original title. Hands down, "Manhunter" is the superior version. I definitely watch that BEFORE watching "Red Dragon." While "Red Dragon" has Anthony Hopkins, it's a weaker adaption of the novel.

Didn't watch this particular reaction. I saw this movie when it first came out and it freaked me out to the point where I could not watch it again. My husband used to work nights and he would call me up (I was home alone) and he would imitate Anthony Hopkins by saying "hello Clarice" as he thought it was funny to scare me. I got even though. I jumped out at him while he was taking a shower and scared him pretty good. At any rate good for you for taking on such a creepy movie. In the meantime, I am anxiously awaiting for you to finish Harry Potter. Love your channel/reactions! 😀

There is a correct order, so watch these. In order. Dressed to Kill by the great Brian DePalma! U will see many of the themes in this movie ur watching, in Dressed to Kill. There's also a almost missable mention of Lector, as a footnote on a brilliant pyschiatrist who figures out a problem with a person, near the end of that movie. Next is Manhunter, by the genius Micheal Mann! It's look ,sound, camera work, music, all very 80s! Also it stars my favorite Lecktor! Brian Cox!. Many of the actors from Manhunter, are also in this movie ur watching. Then u have this movie now, then Hannibal, which is directed by Ridley Scott, and Gary Oldman should have won an Oscar for his part! Last is Red Dragon but u can skip that one, it's more of a Manhunter reboot, but it does say at the end, how he meets Clarice! Another irony here is, the guy who plays buffalo Bill and the guy who plays The Tooth Fairy, are both in Micheal Mann movie, Heat! and Barney is in this, Manhunter, and Hannibal! Also if u watch Clerks and Clerks 2, Jay does a perfect cover of Buffalo Bill! Also Dr Lecktor add-libbed his analysis of Clarice about her being west Virginia, poor white trash, etc. And it was also their first scene together. He said he completely avoided Starling, before their first scene. She said he truly terrified her! That she could barely make it on set, to act with him! The reason Lecktor likes Starling is because he trusts her, and also she's a real person with real psychological problems, nothing like his normal rich city folk patients. She has no duality or guile or false intentions, about her.

Good instincts. FBI agents do not approach suspects and witnesses alone. It's policy and has been since a bad incident many years ago. On a few occasions, I've had one agent come to talk about one of my cases, but for anything operational, it's always a pair. Of course, that would have spoiled the story here.

P.S. It was very lax security at airports (compared to today) pre-911. Since this movie came out in 1991, he definitely could've made it out of the US. Also, he is a master at manipulation. So he wouldn't have much problems talking others into helping him, unwittingly.
