Let’s give credit to KEVIN COSTNER for selecting the I Will Always Love You song. He, Clive Davis, her Mother, God, and her vocal tone, range, and talent made her one of THE GREATEST SINGERS OF ALL GENERATIONS.

Whitney chose him under a strict record deal that she will only work directly with him and no one else. Other record company were just going to have her work with producers that are probably not known. Whitney had the foresight to make sure if she will be on top she has to work with people already there. She wants direct access to top management not lower tier. She knew what she was worth even then and Clive ran with it

Outstanding interview! Mr Davis is correct! He is a business man and the entire reason she was a Star was her vocal ability! And most of the Biopics, Movies and Documentaries focus on her the environment and culture surrounding her and not on her vocal abilities!
I would love to have seen more of studio life! Her rehearsal! Training sessions! The real! The parts about her vocal growth.
Her voice on the Mervin Griffin show as she sang “Home” vs the Peak and Maturity of Voice over the years would have been interesting to watch!
Her voice on the show was great! She had all the mechanics down (vocal control, pitch, tone, stage presence etc…). But after that show her voice grew into a massive powerhouse! Her chest and head voice became so strong and animated it was overwhelming!

Yea I want to ask him, why he only offered her to a 3 song deal, initially? The black guy standing beside him in that movie clip is Gerry Griffith. He was AR for Arista Records and he has given interviews over the years about how Clive didn't see her potential as much as he likes to portray it. It took multiple showcases until Clive decided to take a gamble. After offering her a 3 song deal and then seeing her performance improvements Clive decided to give her a multi-album deal.

@@jameswilson4207 well I'm sure it was a business move. She was young, raw, I'm sure it was a big investment as well as a risk being a founder for a record label. She was also a black artist. I'm sure he took that into consideration as far as marketing and not know how the mass audience was going to receive her. She has a huge voice and lots of star quality but even today very few black artists that have great talent make it in the business in the scale that Whitney did. I'm sure he loved her talent but from a business point of view he had to te see the waters with her and then go big

Whitney in her prime sung the big notes effortlessly, better than anyone around and obviously ever since. I think there was a time when she played around with the vocal gymnastics, just because she could and to have some fun. She is probably a once in 50 year singer. Nobody had the range and the power combined that she had. I'm glad Costner recommended the song, he knew what she and only she could do with it.

Whitney will forever be like an aunt to me. The very first time I was mesmerized and said “WOW. THIS is what a STAR is, what it is to be a CELEBRITY! This is what TALENT is! Grace, poise, elegance!” was seeing Whitney on TV as a very young kid. My very first musical memory EVER was my mom holding me and dancing to I will always love you. I couldn’t have been over 1 year old. I grew up with her music as my mom always listened to her,and she is THE only celebrity I ever cried for. She’s the only one that can make me cry with the power of her voice and the emotion she carried ,the only voice that touches that one wire to my heart and I feel profoundly. She was so much more than a singer, she was a vessel of emotions. She was a damn good story teller. She was real. Quick. Witty. Funny. And I gather all that without ever meeting her. I can only imagine what the ones privileged to have known her felt. I never got to tell her just how much she means to me,just how much she’s touched me and so many others. Rest in peace and you are forever missed, loved and appreciated Whitney.

Kevin Costner said he received major push back from Clive in regards to Whitney starting the song in Acapella. He could be on Jimmy Fallon but couldn't be there for his biggest artist whom he made a boatload of money off of. Whitney said in 2002 that 10 years later she wanted to be somewhere chilling and no one looking and seeing what she was doing. It's ironic 10 years later (2012) she'd be dead and gone.

That is not true. Whitney got a $1.2 million dollar loan from Clive to get clean and pay her debts. He was one of her biggest supporters and was in her corner. The people around her are the ones who ultimately destroyed her. Not only that, but he helped in the estate revenue to get $20 million dollars for Bobbi Kristina. Something she unfortunately wasn’t able to enjoy.
