I taped it at an ASCAP Foundation Awards ceremony where some young people were getting grants for their artistry as composers. I believe the writers of Grey Gardens were also awarded something. Her appearance was a surprise to us and we hadn't yet seen Grey Gardens. That I held that camera steady was a sheer act of will. All I wanted to do was swoon like a little girl. It's impossible to state how she made me feel, hearing it live. I was stunned.
I am so sick about how Christine has been taking second string to Lupone in this War Paint ordeal. I love Lupone, but we can not forget this brilliance for a long belt.
Vince, I agree with you. My daughter and I saw War Paint, and I was astonished at how the audience erupted into applause for Patti LuPone, but rarely gave the deserved enthusiasm to Ms. Ebersole, who, to my mind, has a far superior voice and a much greater versatility and nuance to her delivery of song.
Ms ebersole’s performances are always so emotional, the song “after all” is the first one i listened to, i wish i had a chance to see her show in person
When I heard this song at the Walter Kerr Theatre I cried and cried so much I couldn't put my glasses back on for the whole song. Christine Ebersole is magic.
Yes, I agree, and technically, singing with no vibrato (especially her ending note) is VERY difficult to do if one's voice has a lot of natural vibrato in it, as does hers. Gorgeous!
The first time I saw this lady perform "Grey Gardens" changed my life. I ended up seeing the show five times. It was the greatest thing I've ever seen in the theater: specifically, her performance. Absolute genius.
She might be the most extrordinary talent we have today.Simply stunning. Absolutely breathtaking. And too many people on Broadway today have no idea how to do this ... perform like a star and move an audience to tears..simply by standing still and singing with her whole heart. How lucky were those of us who got to see this once in a lifetime performer perform. I know I will never forget it. Thanks Chris!!
One of the best and most convincing performances. Little Edie would be elated to be presented in such gusto mingled with beautiful and sad sentiment. Great job Christine!!
Of the 215,000 views this video has, I may account for nearly half of them. Perhaps one of the greatest musical theatre performances ever and I saw her in the original production. Here though, you almost forget she is singing even though her voice is otherworldly, because the performance is so devastating and nuanced. Just masterful. Oh and if any fan of hers has not seen The Kominsky Method you should, she walks away with every scene she’s in.
Her total concentration is what's so magnificent about this performance. It's not just a person singing a song and trying to sound pretty. This is an immersive performance. She's not acting. She is just being that character. It's astonishing.
Christine truly is remarkable, as well as being a wonderful person. At the last Saturday matinee, she came outside and signed autographs and posed for photos, she didn't turn anyone away and had a big smile for everyone who approached her. Extremely rare she really appreciated everyone who came to see her, I wish her all the best she deserves it!
I saw the show, but I had gotten tickets for the thursday performance rather than the saturday performance. It was amazing! She truly gave the most incredible performance I have ever seen and is the most genuinely nice person I have ever met.
A friend of mine who knew both Edies and who visited Grey Gardens abck then believes that Little Edie was bi-polar. This song and Christine's sensitive understanding of those mood swings poignantly captures it all in this beuatifully crafted song which displays rage suddenly turned to the gentle nostalgia of memorablia
Magnificent. I saw it twice on Broadway. There may be a handful of people still alive who can claim to have seen Laurette Taylor in The Glass Menagerie; I’m not one of them. I hope that in the coming years those who saw Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens will see to it that her name is similarly revered.
Seeing her in this show on Broadway is one of my great memories of the past 40 years of going to theatre. So beautifully acted and sung, in that stunningly beautiful voice. My friend and I left and just could barely talk after the heartbreaking final scene.
Isn't it great that we have both, though? I'm just so happy that I was there. If I hadn't turned on my camera, this incredibly powerful performance would be lost to us. What amazes me is that I still feel the same jolt of electricity, seeing it here, that I did seeing it live. This is the essence of a true world class performer meeting the perfect material and role.
My early favorite number from the show was "Revolutionary Costume for Today," but the more I revisit this number and the original film I'm now convinced that this is the moment where Christine best captures Little Edie.
I cannot believe how truly accurate they adapted the anecdotes from the documentary into this number. When Edie talks about not having time to hang the birdcage, I shudder because it is too incredibly touching--- what with all the mementos!
The genius of how she delves so incredibly deeply into this character, capturing her completely, body and soul, is what makes this performance a towering achievement in musical theater. It will go down as one of the greatest performances in history. A perfect marriage of singer, song and character.
One of the amazing things about genius is that, unlike when it's portrayed in movies, it doesn't announce itself with dramatic music or camera angles. She was just there on the stage -- so completely immersed in the character that you didn't see "acting." You only saw the character. And that's really amazing considering the fact that Little Edie is, well, insane. So, I'm not surprised that the realization of her accomplishment is something you begin to truly value in retrospect.
OK all I can say is where the hell have I been, I have not seen this and OMG I was mesmerized watching this I could not take my eyes off her Amazing woman, Made me cry just listening to this Thanks for posting! :)
+Aaron Smallets So wrong - while Act 1 had serious flaws, Act 2 was nearly flawless. And songs like "The Revolutionary Costume" and "Another Winter in a Summer Town" were outstanding, as was "Will You"?
Truly phenomenal performance by Christine Ebersole and pain of little Edie's life is so sad. I am so glad I went to see this. I almost didn't because the commercials weren't very indicative of what the show actually was. I wish it wasn't closing.
I was there that night. The room had a dazzling view of Manhattan through a wall of windows behind the stage. When Christine Ebersole and Scott Frankel performed "Around The World" it was beautiful, powerful, and deeply moving. Thank you so much for putting it up here. Also that evening Marvin Hamlisch & Alan Bergman performed "The Way We Were". That was really special. My brother Jeff winning the Rudolf Nissim Prize was cool too. Go Bro!
I keep doing that, too. Watching it and watching it. Singing it and singing it. My partner couldn't sleep the other night because he just kept singing to himself in bed. It's really an extraordinary performance. She's just absolute perfection. I'm so glad I was there to get this. Otherwise, it would have been lost to the ages.
Amazing. On repeat. And knowing the documentary ( enthralling) this distillation in this particular performance is gotcha by golly wow for the ages. No, truly. Playwright and song writers delivered such good product. Thank you so very much for capturing and sharing.
Better? Are you kidding me? When I heard the show was going to be closing I booked a ticket from Las Vegas to New York City to catch the final performance. I had been wanting to see it and there was no way I was going to let it close without me seeing it. I was not disappointed in the least. Christine Ebersole (and the rest of the cast) was simply AMAZING! It was worth every penny and more. I would love to see it in London when it opens there.
Perhaps if you saw the documentary "Grey Gardens" you would understand the brilliance of Ebersole's performance. It is an enthralling documentary and I think Ebersole's performance as Little Edie is MAGICAL. I do think you need to have seen the original documentary to "get" it, though.
Omg, i can't believe you got out your camera and captured this timeless moment in musical theater history. For someone like me who would have killed to see the show live but lives in Israel, this video is an incredible compensation. A million thank you's! May you take that magic camera of yours wherever you go!
Christine Ebersole will go down as one of the all-time greats. But I must all, Scott Frankel's music AND his magnificent piano playing here takes my breath away.
That whole musical is pure genious. It's a shame it couldn't stay on but I can see how it wouldn't appeal enough to those who don't know the documentary. Christine's impersonation is dead and her performance is amazing. Not just the singing. When she says "Fine" at the end of the song "Mother Darling" she's conveys so much with just the inflection and the tone of her voice! 1000 Tony awards wouldn't have been enough.
Amazing perforformance, saw the Muscical last week and screamed and cried for more at the end. I am so glad Christine won the Tony she and all the cast are extroadinary. See the show and tell everyone, it's a must see!!
I just saw it (GG) today. It was amazing. The second act truly is worth every penny spent. Both Ebersole and Wilson are remarkable, totally unmatched in performance I've seen in recent years. Sad that this show is ending this week.
Please feel free to share this video anywhere you wish. I didn't know anything about this song before this night. It was all I could do to hold the camera steady, I was so overwhelmed by her performance.
I just now saw your comments on this video and I totally agree. It's a great composition, and the delicacy with which she tackles every micro-moment of the song is the thing most composers can only dream of.
The line "around the world with stones and shells the nicest one I lost " is so heartbreaking for no reason and at the same time for lots of reasons Thats when you know the text is genius
My friend wants me to sing this for a competition, but I'd be too scared to do it because I could never measure up to Christine. She's absolutely amazing.
I so agree about Scott's brilliant piano. I love this recording WAY more than the orchestrated version, and that's no disrespect to the orchestrations. It's just the power of this piano combined with that voice, it's stripped down to its most powerful edge.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! MAGNIFICENT! I'm so disappointed that I may never be able to see Ms. Ebersole in perform this song or this role in person, but every bit I see brings me such joy. Oh PLEASE won't someone bring this show BACK???
This is so beautiful. Im at work, vacuuming and cleaning up and all of a sudden, this just pops in my head after hearing it on spottily, Ive heard it and had it in my head EVERY DAY since...that was 2 months ago and its still magical -both artistic and enchanting. thanks so much Steve, and to the lady of talent herself, Christine Ebersole
@steveshack I have to watch this every few weeks. It comforts me to know there is still this kind of talent in the world. You don't get to witness it too often. We should send you cash for capturing this.
LOVE it. like everyone else i cant get enough of this one. so good, i love how most of the song is all quotes from the movie. i watch it at least 3 times a week, that and the sequal which is equally hillarious. i love the fire scene. "Mother! the house is on fire! help ill do anything you tell me to do." "i always do the blanket trick" lol. so funny. thanks for posting this. i love her.
She could return to Broadway and do this show for the remainder of her career and it would be sold out until she didn't want to do it anymore. I believe that. Amazing story, incredibly beautiful and effortless performance. It all came together in ... Grey Gardens.
I absolutely LOVED Act One. It never occurred to me that Big Edie was the cause of Little Edie's mental breakdown. To see what Big Edie used to be made her later condition that much more vivid.
Very good observation. It's in these tiny details that you feel the full character fleshed out. And for the singer, what a great line to get to sing. You don't have to act it at all because the emotional content is already present.
This is one of the greatest performances I've ever seen, my God she's breathtaking
This is a master class.
I taped it at an ASCAP Foundation Awards ceremony where some young people were getting grants for their artistry as composers. I believe the writers of Grey Gardens were also awarded something. This song is so sad and addictive! One of the great moments from Broadway
Haunting, absolutely haunting. Such a fantastic singer, I felt every line.
Yes, I agree, and technically, singing with no vibrato (especially her ending note) is VERY difficult to do if one's voice has a lot of natural vibrato in it, as does hers. Gorgeous!
I could not agree more..I have been going to the theatre for over 50 years!! Her performance in Grey Gardens was absolutely SPELLBINDING!!!!!
Yes, "the nicest one, I lost" is a real tear-jerker!
That's the line that really wrecks me
This is one of my all time favorite performances, she is so brilliant in this role and this song
The first time I saw this lady perform "Grey Gardens" changed my life. I ended up seeing the show five times. It was the greatest thing I've ever seen in the theater: specifically, her performance. Absolute genius.

I think Edie would have loved the musical. And I think she would have wept hearing this song. So beautiful.

You watch this and you never want it to end . Pure Brilliance
She completely and totally inhabits this character. It's impossible to imagine a more magnificent performance.
I saw the show, but I had gotten tickets for the thursday performance rather than the saturday performance. It was amazing! She truly gave the most incredible performance I have ever seen and is the most genuinely nice person I have ever met.

Loved this brilliant show. One of the last great Broadway musicals. Was able to go backstage .
She has one of THE most beautiful emotive voices.
Absolutely FABULOUS Christine !!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Christine Ebersole is one of the most refined, talented and powerful performers on the stage today. Amazing!
Seeing her in this show on Broadway is one of my great memories of the past 40 years of going to theatre. So beautifully acted and sung, in that stunningly beautiful voice. My friend and I left and just could barely talk after the heartbreaking final scene.

You're right Steve. I am addicted to this song! Christine is fabulous.
I saw her do this show in New York when it came out, it was the BEST show I have ever seen!
She's incredible.
i cant even remember when i first loved Chiristine. A singular talent.
I can see why it would change your life. This is the kind of performance that illuminates a life that is really beyond explanation.
Oh my God... is it sad that I cry every time I watch this? I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
The genius of how she delves so incredibly deeply into this character, capturing her completely, body and soul, is what makes this performance a towering achievement in musical theater. It will go down as one of the greatest performances in history. A perfect marriage of singer, song and character.
I thanked you for this a year ago or more - and all I can do again is say THANK YOU. Breaks my heart - I come back often......
Yeah, I've had this song stuck in my head all this week.
Year after year, I come back to this as a reminder of what great talent sounds like. Thank you again for posting.
One of the amazing things about genius is that, unlike when it's portrayed in movies, it doesn't announce itself with dramatic music or camera angles.

You are very welcome. She's amazing, isn't she?
it was a very short lived musical. For good reason. This song, however, was definitely a stand-out. It was the the only good part of the show.
Jim Atwood LOL Jim I just read this! I think I showed you this once a LOOOONNNGG time ago! ;) BRILLIANT!
+Aaron Smallets So wrong - while Act 1 had serious flaws, Act 2 was nearly flawless. And songs like "The Revolutionary Costume" and "Another Winter in a Summer Town" were outstanding, as was "Will You"?
Broadway Classics I remember when I saw it off Broadway, we almost left at the end of Act 1 but we ended up staying. So glad we did!
This number effects my on an extremely deep level. So deep I can scarcely begin to talk about it.
Still brilliant as the years go by.
I've only seen the show once (I wish I could see it over and over), but as of right now this is my favorite song from the show. Gorgeous.
Truly phenomenal performance by Christine Ebersole and pain of little Edie's life is so sad. I am so glad I went to see this. I almost didn't because the commercials weren't very indicative of what the show actually was. I wish it wasn't closing.
Oh god! I didn't get to see Grey Gardens, but I am totally enchanted with the story. It really hits home...it makes me cry!

bravo, sniff, tear, smile..encore christine:)encore:)
absolutely entrancing. that desperation and hopelessness, such heartbreak on such a beautiful face. and the voice!
The show is a masterpiece. A true work of art.
One of the very best Broadway stars!
Omg, i can't believe you got out your camera and captured this timeless moment in musical theater history. This performance is so powerful that it weakened my immunity after watching it. Oh yeah, it also took couple buckets of tears.
Shared this with another friend last week. Years and chills even after my 100th viewing. Heartbreaking, powerful, sublime.

ABSOLUTELY amazing !!❤❤❤

Thank you for posting she is amazing a true talent. My favourite Broadway actress by far I can't watch enough of her
Love beyond belief !!!❤❤❤
She is so spectacular in this role. I completely agree with you.
Wow, I love Christine's vibrato. This looks like a great show!
she is so great!!!! thank you william sledd for recomending this awesome singer!!

FABULOUS !!❤❤❤
i just saw a local production of this play. this song is awesome. the gal in the one i saw was really good, but this was even better
OMG I just watched this video for the 2nd time and I am literally extatic from her performance. I am definitely going to see this show!
@steveshack you did a great job recording it - I would have been shaking like a leaf!!
Thanks so much!!
You were one of the lucky few who realized what they were seeing. She is almost unparalleled in talent.
She's much better here than on the CD. I can't wait to see what it's like live.
I absolutely LOVED Act One. It never occurred to me that Big Edie was the cause of Little Edie's mental breakdown. To see what Big Edie used to be made her later condition that much more vivid.

feckin amazin' , I've told everyone I know... she is THE BEST !!!!! This clip is even better than clips fromthe show .... THANK YOU so much
Sheer genius. This is it.
This is my new favorite song! :]
I can't stop watching this.
I'm not generally a fan of her work, but WOW...she really nailed this one.
This material is awe-inspiring.
