how many other people realized how dark this song is, for however sweet the melody is, the character the singer is portraying is implying that the only or at least the main reason she loves her child is because she needs to leech off their success to become somebody, and she is practically comparing her child to a stepping stone for her own personal gain :| still, nice song
It may seem like that, but it's more along the lines of the joys of being a mother, and having that relationship. She raises them to be great and hopes they'll be great, yeah, but what mother doesn't.(As she did care if her daughters married the prince.) She sings about the bond between mother and child and how amazing it is, how deep, and severing it is horrible. She, the step mother, sings it to Cinderella to be cruel because she lost hers, hence the line "Ah, but how would you know."
I think its more of "the love and bond between mother and child" is so deep and so achingly strong that she would trow all of her thoughts and life away just to see this child succeed. And after sacrificing (willingly and without thought) all her youth and life to this child she hopes that when the child grows up her life might be saved by seeing her child thrive and smile back at her "thank you mother" and then comes the dark past and the dark toughts that once haunted her and "finally leaving this hell whole" she's free to realize she's the one who's been depending on her as much as her child of her. And when she remembers all her pain she truly believes it was all done to see her child be extraordinary in life. Idk something like that. I guess its more of "how unfair is it a mother sacrifices all of her life to her child without thought hoping all of her dark thoughts are forgiven some day when her child thrives"
IIRC, isn't Ever After an adaptation of Cinderella? I'm assuming, as a result, that this is the Wicked Stepmother's song, so that context certainly fits.
yes bc it’s from the musical Ever After lol. It’s basically a villain song giving context to her motivations to make her daughter marry the prince instead of Cinderella, and that’s why that last line hits so hard

Okay but can we appreciate how haunting the way she describes her daughter when she’s directly referring to her- “screaming little stranger” “feed your little future” and “the past you knew would haunt you”-and how impersonal it is. You don’t think of a mother with her newborn child thinking of the baby in her arms as a stranger or just a future for you. Out of a song supposedly about her daughter, it’s the only time she speaks about her daughter in terms that aren’t general like when she talks about a mother and her child. This isn’t a mother’s love, this is pure greed and narcissism

This is truly beautiful, she expressed so much emotion throughout the song, showing no body movements or gestures but you can tell all of that in her singing.
For any of you who are steven universe fans, it has been confirmed that Christine Ebersole is the voice actor of white diamond it has been said so by Patti La pou who is the voice actor of yellow diamond. In a interview someone asked Patti if she knew who's white diamonds voice actor, then she replyed that her good friend christine ebersole is playing that part. If thats not enough to convince you, heres another fact: in a interview with christine ebersole someone asked if the rumors of her being white diamond is true, she replyed that they are not rumors, meaning that its true that she indeed is white diamonds voice actor.
Patti somehow knew that christine was voice actor, because epsiodes are recorded in a year, so in a possiblty last year both patti and christine recorded lines for both yellow and white diamond, since it takes 9 months or even about a year to get epsiodes done also they record lines for epsiodes about every wednesday.
Also big news, it has been said that rebecca is voicing a character on the show, and thats a character we have never seen. Probably in season 5 or maybe 6 we'll see the presence of white diamond if sooner in the show white diamond is mentioned like when they did in the episode of "the trail", pink diamond's pearl was name dropped by blue zircon.

Same, from what I have found is that this song was only in the 2015 PaperMill Playhouse production. It isn’t included in any other versions that have been made.

I absolutely love the emotion in her voice.
So we all see the tragic "WD singing mournfully/angrily to Steven about PD" and that last line, the "There's a bond that exists between mother and child, ah, but then again, how would you know?" is perfect for SU because it would perfectly express WD's anger.
HOWEVER
I looked up the original matterial, and (from what I gather from Wikipedia), the play was a Cinderella story, and Chrisine's character, the Stepmother, is a baroness whose estate has fallen into disrepair (presumably due to years without an actual income). Her goal is to convince the prince to marry the eldest of her two daughters (well, a specific one of the two), I guess so that the royal wealth will 'save her' financially. And it seems that this song is directed at Danielle (aka Cinderella), so THAT LAST LINE- "There's a bond that exists between mother and child, ah, but then again, how would you know?"- THAT WAS A DIG AT DANIELLE'S MOTHER'S DEATH

The song is from the musical Ever After made from the movie with Drew Barrymore and Angelica Houston. Christine played the stepmother. She sings this to Danielle, the Cinderella character.
Her voice is so beautiful and she really sells the emotion in the song. My heart aches
