5:16 I'd heard how chill Weddell seals are about human researchers, but it's wild, watching a man scoop a pup into a bag, and the mom doesn't immediately freak out and attack him.
Maybe for their first few pups they're more confused and possibly defensive, but after say a mom has had over ten pups, she may see it as normal to have her pups weighed.
@@fulldangle Most animal mothers have a strong defensive instinct even if they've never seen a human before. But these seals seem to have no natural predators and are very accepting of humans by default.
I think she maybe didn't realise he was in the bag once he was in it, it seemed like she was looking for him, I guess she didn't understand that he was in the bag.
Hi Lloyd, thank you for your question! There are male adult Weddell Seals at the pupping colonies, establishing and defending their underwater breeding territories. There are younger males that may be hanging around the pupping colonies watching how seals interact in the colonies, and learning from what they experience. Of course, the male Weddell pups are about half the pup population during the pupping season. When the ice starts to break up, after the pupping season is over, most of the seals-Both male and female-will head out of Erebus Bay to look for food, and into McMurdo Sound and the Ross Sea. The Weddell male and female pups will take what they’ve learned from their moms, and all that weight they’ve gained from nursing, and fend for themselves. The Weddell Seals that survive the Antarctica Summer and Winter will return in the Springtime to the pupping colony areas where they were born. This is because Weddell Seals have very strong birth site fidelity, and return to the area they were born year after year.
wow!! they seem to be such peaceful animals!! it would be so interesting to study how social they are and if interactions between non-familial seals affect their behaviour at all. they are just so precious!!
It's so amazing how the seals are so unafraid of humans cuz they have no natural predators on the ice, even when the scientists put them in body bags to weigh them and at 4:44 scientist: checks tail weddel mom: scientist: leaves weddel mom: LOL
@Matix 777 i used to love sea lions....since i first saw harbor seals, elephant seals and weddell seals,i started to fall in love with them cuz thy seems soo thick, round, derp, and chubby and while sea lions seems 2 b least cute
Excellent and professional video as compared to so many others. Also, the narration and interviews from the project researchers was extremely helpful to understand what was going on in the video. So many other videos don't have any narration and it can be difficult to interpret what is haappening to and with the animals. I prefer narrarated flms when I do not know much about the subject matter. It is difficult to truly learn someting from an un-narrated video.
Nice video. I miss those places. Next season We'll start a project in Terra Nova Bay, close to the Italian station "MZS". Good luck with your studies. Roberto
Can't believe they let you get that Close to them and touch them like that. They don't try to fight if they feel you putting on a tag or picking up there young? Also how come they make the sounds they do? There probably the coolest sounding animals on the planet
When i first heard the lady say the word 'Weddell' I thought she randomly started talking baby talk at first then it was like oh that's what the seal is called! LOL
if i remember correctly, there are no predators for these seals that attack on top of the ice! that makes the seals more likely to be friendlier and curious about humans instead of being wary towards us :^) how precious!!
Hi and thanks for this, I made a PowerPoint presentation for my studies and it was on Weddell seals. I really appreciate your work ! I have a question, as you say in the comments, seals are loyal to their birthplace. Have you ever seen pups left alone after 7 weeks come back the next year to meet again their mother?
It’s probably no different to them than getting an ear piercing is to us. Plus, it’s so cold, especially in the water, that they probably don’t feel it very much at all.
You needed to do this to learn and realize that these little ones are all different. Yes you are doing a great job. But we are all different........ Even those who look alike.
How awful that this scientists still use such ancient methods to weight the species. We have AI now...We should not touch the species to get this insights
@@therecentlyundeceased Well, I'm not a marine biologist, but I do know seals have to catch very fast swimming fish, so a stream-lined body surface working at full capacity is surely a must to out-maneuver the fish.

Those are the only humans they have ever known so they arent afraid of them.

so cute I wish I could visit Antarctica and meet the Weddell seal
Sadly you can’t touch seals it’s illegal

These seals are unbelievably cute. Where do all the male seals go?

That intro is giving off some serious mid 90's VHS educational video vibes.
My bucket list: go to Antarctica and see all the seals, penguins and whales. I love Antarctic wildlife so much!
these seals are so chill lmao. humans walk up right next to them and they barely budge

Just watching seals in quarantine don't mind me
you have my attention . this is very interesting.
So the mothers allow humans to attach tags to their babies flippers?????? How did the get that level of trust?

Mika Bunny They are one of the main food sources for polar bears.
@@cocainecarl7814 Polar bears live in the Arctic, so they can't be predators of the Weddell seal.
Hope those tags don't make the seals uncomfortable.
the puppies are so fucking cute

seals are indeed, very cute
So cute. I could hold them for hours
sacred flesh tubes
maybe some of the seals just don't want to have pups :(
I'm afraid, I hope it will be able to live in the future 🙂
doesn't putting the clips on the pup's flipper hurt them???

The narrator sounds like hollyhock from bojack horseman t
What do the seals say about this do they want people watching them 24/7 and experimenting on them or whatever the hell they do
its not 24/7 tho. and you ca clearly see especially the mothers are very realxeda round the scientists, as they gained their trust over time

they just picked a mentally handicapped seal to monitor, whole lot of weird swimming going on there..
Rocky Barrera I think it’s just playing around :)
WONDER IF THOSE BULKY TAGS THEY PUT ON THE SEALS' FINS DIMINISH THE SEALS' SWIMMING ABILITY AND CONTRIBUTE TO/CAUSE THE 80% DEATH RATE.
I think you're substantially underestimating these creatures. They're very powerful in the water. Those tags are probably a few grams at most.

more time means more seal footage though!
