The reason why you need a map to the Grand Line is because it is bordered on both sides by what are called Calm Belts. There is no wind so a ship can't move and it is filled with giant sea beasts. Venturing into a Calm Belt is essentially a death sentence. It's something they really should have explained in the show because the Calm Belts are why the Grand Line is how it is. You just can't go a direction and get to it. There are specific points it has to be entered. I'm hoping they go into this in Season 2 with Loguetown and Reverse Mountain. But yeah, in the live action it is a plot hole because they left out the information on the Calm Belts.
@@skywardsword2804 You may be right, but also the map to the Grand Line wasn't as big as a plot point either if I'm remembering correctly. It was something that they just kind of grabbed. But since they made it the primary MacGuffin of the series, they should have stuck in the Calm Betl explanation to let the audience know why it was so important. Also, cutting out Krieg while understandable, does lose the arc that shows how dangerous and insane the Grand Line is.
@@StrongStyleFiction i mean they did include gin telling luffy how dangerous it was and that his fleet was destroyed in a day, but they left out the fact that just one man did it, which was weird.
The map in the manga wasn’t even a grand line map it was a treasure map Buggy had. The grand line map was just the plot device they use in the live action to make the story cohesive. The manga and anime was really more villain of the week with little connecting the arcs with the exception of luffy recruiting new crew members and moving through the east blue. Also it’s an adventure story and luffy doesn’t care where he goes as long as at the end he becomes the king of the pirates so adding something they needed to move forward was probably a good thing.
Also the reason why Fishman Karate works against devil fruit users is explained later on with Jinbe. Its not so much the sea water that hurt luffy but the way fishman karate works. (Matt Owens definitely took a creative liberty with this interaction)
@@MuscleboundKage But Arlong doesn't know Fishmen Karate like Jimbei does which is to be hurt people from the inside. That's why in the anime he had to resolve to sharp attacks like his teeth, nose, swords and water darts.
It's not really explained in the show, but when Arlong splashes Luffy it's meant to feel like a shotgun blast, because Arlong can manipulate water to such an extent. So a viewer who isn't familiar with the source material would guess it's because of Luffy's weakness.
Been a while but I thought I remember Arlong throwing Luffy into one of those pools, not just splashing him. Could be confusing it with another time though. 🤷♂️
It's true, Luffy gets his feet caught in the ground while using his new pin wheel attack and Arlong scoops him out and throws him in the water while the ground is still around his feet. @@Lonn715
@@Lonn715 Arlong indeed uses water as a weapon, I don't remember anymore if he used it against Luffy but I know he used it against Sanji and Zoro and knocked both of them down "only" by throwing water at them. Yosaku and Johnny even commented how Zoro and Sanji started coughing up blood bc of it, and Sanji felt it was as strong as a shotgun blast.
@@Lothiril oh 100% he uses water as a weapon. But in regards to water and devil fruit powers, I didn't think that would be enough. That he had to be submerged.
About Garp and Mihawk there is another power system in One Piece that basically allow non devil fruit users to fight devil fruit users on the same ground. But it remains a mystery for a long time and is not explored/explained before like the 400th episode of the anime. So be patient (or watch the anime) because the world of One piece is insanely complexe and deep thanks to more than 25 years of writing.
Yea and they sprinkled hints in season 1 of the live action that weren’t there in the anime or manga. Literally the only thing is shanks turning away the lord of the coast.
@@ryanalt9219 I think its fine they did, since Oda threw it in later to explain alot of things and put the fighters on more equal ground later lol. More LA only viewers where confused by 1 how did shanks get to where luffy was2, oh shanks must have a DF because he scared away the seaking! cuz as we know in the manga/anime shanks is flouting in the water holding luffy while fending off the seaking so at the time he couldnt have eaten one. Same with Kuro many thought he had a DF power.
@@gregowen2022 throughout one piece you get froeshadowed of the other power system. in season 1 its been shown 3 times already but audience dont get it confirmed
For the magic system: the sea water did affect buggy, but the show didn't do a good enough job showing it, so to me, I let it slide. As for Mihawk and Garp, it is a case of not explaining the power system well, but I took it as a prelude of what to expect when the straw hats get to the grand line.
It’s because it’s not explained until way later. While having garp throwing cannonballs is cool that didn’t actually happen in the manga until way later. I look at it more like this the story is told through luffy for the most part and he’s young and doesn’t know much of the world. So you learn a lot about the world especially pre time skip through luffy witnessing things along his journey.
@@gregowen2022 i think the best way to explain sea water weakness is like this: when submerged, they will lose strength and become exhausted super fast so even if they know how to swim they will sink in exhaustion like immediatly, they will recover when outside the water, there is another related weakness shown later, that will make it more visible. ARLONG power was not well explained, he didnt sprink water to luffy, he was suppoused to use his hands to throw water so fast and wich such pressure than it would have knocked anyone below his power level, it was unrelated to the devil fruit weakness.
The power system other than devil fruit is not revealed in the manga and hundreds of chapters as well. Granted, we as a fan didnt know about it as well until we reached that point. But we still can kinda guess that there are other powers other than devil fruit that make them powerful like that.
I actually watched another reactor complaining about Buggy going for the map in all fours being goofy. I did get he was weakened, but yeah, I think most people didn't get it XD
6:39 “slightly” is an understatement 😂 imagine the most obnoxious drooling over women you can and then turn it up to 11. He’s still a great character, but live action Sanji is so much better in regard to flirting.
I was wondering how they were going to handle Sanji in the show because he'd definitly be Me-Too-ed if they let him speak and act like he does in the anime.
I have to admit, I much prefer the live action Sanji over the manga. That's one of the benefits of the live action gearing towards an older audience. While I love the level of goofiness in the manga Sanji's simping is a little too much.
I’m usually for things staying close to source, but this seems like a good change. Sanji is excellent and I can’t imagine him being an obnoxious simp, it definitely would have detracted from the show I think
I agree with you on the devil fruit rules, but NOT the other superhuman abilities rules. The show plants little easter eggs throughout the season to make you more and more curious about how the world operates: the warlords, the snails, baroque works, the fish men, even the grand line...it's not really meant to be explained right off the bat, but to invoke your curiosity and make you continuously question what you think you know. SPOILER ALERT: There is indeed a whole other "magic system" apart from the devil fruits, but it doesn't really get explained until much later in the story. Unlike devil fruits, this particular system is actually achievable by anyone through hard work and training; it's the same one that allows Garp to beat up Luffy, Mihawk to slice ships in half, and Shanks to make sea monsters go away with a stare. It's important because it establishes that devil fruit users, despite being legitimate threats, are not invincible or all-powerful. In fact, those devil fruit users that become overly arrogant with their abilities are often the first ones to get annihilated in the grand line for that reason!
Yeah a good rule of thumb for One Piece, it a human in our world does not equate to a human in the one piece world. Their range of strength is much wider and has higher peaks than what exists on earth.
SPOILER ALERT!! The fun part is that there are other possible magic system or martial techniques or ways to get stronger in One Piece as well. Don Chinjao Vibration ability.,CP9 abilities and others. The fun thing is that these abilities are rare and isolated and not spread around. This is one of the realistic parts of One Piece. If you made/discovered an awesome power and abilities. You or me would not share it with the world. The same is for One Piece. Only Haki and DeVil fruit is wide spread because anyone can get stronger from it or just stumble upon the ability.
@@theanimeunderworld8338 not gonna lie, this is a concern of mine too. BUT, the fact that this season turned out good AT ALL is nothing short of a miracle, so you never know...
@erubin100 the east blue was kind of normal for a fantasy but the grandline is where trouble will be. Can't always be inside pubs like season 1 Giants, strange animals, new fruits, wild islands, new species, it's going to be tough
At this point in the show Zoro is like lvl 5 and Mohawk is lvl 75. Also, the power/magic system really hasn't been explained yet. Although I would say sometimes in the anime it isn't always consistent.
Honestly there should just be a LV. ??? above Mihawks head because we have no idea what him going all out looks like. Especially considering he is Shanks Rival.
I don't think that's even close. If we were to bring bounties into this, assume Zoro is about as strong as Luffy at the end of season one, and Zoro is level 5, Mihawk would be level 600 😂
Not sure if it was a pro youtuber move or not but i'm having to watch the video twice because I would get so engrossed at the cooking scenes that I wouldn't notice what you said about the show. Well played sir...
Greg, you are killing it. Can't heap enough praise on your review insights, organization, enthusiasm, etc etc. Please keep doing what you do. And I cannot wait for you to finish eviscerating WoT season 2 (no matter how painful it is for you). Also, ditto your overall take on Ome Piece. My sons got me into it, and I ended up enjoying it more than I expected.
I appreciate the kind words so much! I love doing it, hopefully one day full time! I’m working on that WoT script, but I find myself avoiding watching, lol. It’s just sooooo bad, but I have to get it out
My son had seen all of the original mangas and the whole S1 of the live action series. He was very excited to re-watch S1 with his parents, which is like gold to parents of a teenager like us. We all enjoyed the first season and will probably rewatch it before S2 comes out.
I've started watching the anime before the LA came out and I'm now 3 episodes into the Thriller Bark Arc at episode 339. I'm enjoying this massive journey a lot, so I hope you will too!
You'll find out about the reason sailing south doesn't work in the next season. About devil fruits, it feels like the directors didn't really understand the water thing. In the source material, getting splashed does nothing, it's getting submerged in any water that takes away the power user's strength.
The only thing that goes against that is when arlong splashes luffy. Don’t forget arlong is a fishman and they do have the ability to control the flow of water so it would have more power than if regular person were to splash you. The bigger issue tbh is that luffy takes a quite a bit of beatings when he’s suppose to be basically immune to impact attacks because of his devil fruit but I get why they went with what they did because luffy was pretty clearly stronger than anyone he faced in the east blue.
@@ryanalt9219 there's also the buggy tank. With the water being ankle deep at the start, Luffy should've been able to just punch through the glass, no problem
The magic systems and the world is unraveled slowly. There is a reason why the manga is almost 1100 chapters. What you got in the manga is a bit less than a 100 chapters. The way they did the world and magic in the show is completely consistent with the manga. The "inconsistencies" or plot holes are there for you to theorise on and you will get the answers eventually
I honestly don’t know how they’re going to adapt the rest of the manga. The powers and characters get even stranger and the action scenes more extravagant. How are they going to adapt that without ballooning the budget to unsustainable levels.
@@erubin100 Perhaps their point is money isn't the answer anymore, because it can only get you so far. Many ridiculous things happen later on in many fight scenes, which would look ridiculous in any live action setting. I'm thinking of Sykpiea Arc for instance... Or CP9 Although I thoroughly enjoyed the live action, the fight scenes in general were already much more subdued compared to the anime equivalent making them seem way less grand in scale (and importance). So how could you successfully adapt even bigger fights without reducing the wow factor? Thinking about it you might be able to draw comparisons of the powers in One Piece to a show like Doom Patrol or Heroes or even Marvel. Doom Patrol has Jane, "The Blob" and girl who manifests her dreams or whatever. Heroes has Hiro, the woman with the ice powers Jessica I think, earthquake guy, and so on. But there's always the difference in scope of the battles that will only get bigger over time.
@@officialnoonon your doom patrol comment brings up a good point: you look back on the history of book and comic adaptations, I feel the key is focusing on the characters more than the spectacle. Not that spectacle isn't important, but live action just can't compare to animation or comics in that regard because there are too many restrictions. I have seen many live action shows and movies with borderline terrible effects, but the character writing more than made up for it, so I was never really disappointed.
It would be interesting to see Netflix invest heavily in this. It’s kind of their style to throw anything at the wall and see what sticks. Stranger things got more money as time went on. Now, I don’t know what kinds of things they’ll have to re-create, but I know anime can get crazy, the medium lends itself well to crazy. Sadly, it’s just one of the drawbacks of live action. I would be interested to hear if this Eiichiro Oda has plans for it or how he envisions the live changes of the more fantastical elements
As a long time fan I absolutely loved it and the access it gives to people who don't have time/ want for the manga/anime. It's an amazing story and I just want as many people to know that as possible. As for some of the "plot-holes", a lot of explanation was cut out for time or will be explained in future seasons. A reason why One Piece is so great is because the story builds on itself over a long period of time and results in great and greater pay-offs down the line. Thanks for the review!
In episode 2 after the tank broke buggy was indeed affected by the sea water… it’s just that he recovered faster than Luffy cause Luffy was in it for a longer period of time. Buggy was on the floor and crawling towards the map after the tank broke
Sanji is my favorite character too! I'm SO happy the direction they took his character in this show rather than his over the top womanizer personality he has in the manga and show. I'm glad he's more of a suave speaker and can easily solve problems with a friendly conversation or homemade meal. I'm so excited to see where they take this show and I couldn't be happier they did One Piece justice! You can tell Oda was heavily involved to make sure of it.
I’m glad he isn’t a womanizer as well. I know things should stay true to source, but that would have been so annoying. He’s the perfect amount of flirt without being eyeroll inducing
For the Map, it'll get clarified during Season 2. But for geographical reasons that have yet to be explained (it was teased very subtly though), you physically can't just go to the grandline. You'll die immediately. The map shows you where the entrance is, and how to navigate it. Once we get to season 2 and you see how they get into the grandline you'll be like ahhhhh It see why you needed a map.
Ngl the map thing wasn't that prevalent in the anime/manga it was a little side story for Nami's introduction and that's it.. About the rest of the power systems build up in the world (Mihawk and Garp), we follow the ride of a kids group of starter area pirates that don't know how the real world works, in the anime these things are all explained but slowly and drop by drop as the series progresses so later in hindsight you go 'oww damn that was that!' sometimes Oda's payoff would be hundreds of chapters later. One Piece is a slow burn, not a high octane flame.
The map to the Grand Line is not a big deal in the original if I remember right. But seems like they wanted a plot element that would streamline things plotwise. In the original every island had multiple chapters/episodes to build up what was going on there so the map plot seemed to be a convenient way to put the ball rolling. Also the devil fruit powers don't instantly disappear from splashes of water, you need to be submerged. The author has said something like "the water needs to be waist deep" or something for it to sap your energy. When Arlong splashed water to Luffy I think it was supposed to be that the strength of the fast and thereby sharp water droplets actally made some damage on impact. Though in live action it seems that it actually took his energy. In the original the fishmen shoot water like that but they're a bit more like sharp projectiles.
the map is necessary but they didn't explain the geography of the world very well..maybe in season 2.. you can't access the grand line by sailing to the ecuator , but by only travelling through a specific point
There IS no map in the anime. (Okay fine there's a brief scene when Nami's looking or one and finds a note foreshadowing Buggy instead and never mentions it again.) The grand line map is what is called a MacGuffin, it's a narrative tool to tie events together and explain why characters move from A to B if you start thinking about it for sec, but it barely even matters for the story.
"How does Mihawk have superhuman reflexes and strength, how does Garp have superhuman reflexes and strength?" They don't. It's just the nature of this world that the upper limits of human potential are much greater. Still very difficult to reach, but not a superpower in itself. That said, more things may still be explained later, potentially much later. Thing about One Piece is set ups and pay offs can be separated by more than a decade sometimes.
I feel like just a couple lines would have made that clear and would have resolved a lot of confusion, but I still really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for season 2!
People will get this answer at episode 1 or 2 next season, they will not be lost There is a lot lot of things in one piece Same with politics (but i'm not talking about today US politics obviously and fortunatly)
I’m hoping to get into manga, it sounds interesting. Picked up vol 1 of My Hero Academia the other day, since it’s one of the few I’ve even heard of. I was a little confused that it was backward at first, haha
The devil fruit rules were explained a little messy. Basically the deeper you are in STANDING water the weaker you will be. Up to your ankles you can feel it, knees you are getting real weak, anything past the waist and most of your energy is taken from you. This does not mean you cant use your devil fruit, it just means you cant move. This can be any liquid too i believe. Lemonade, pool water, hot springs. The splash that arlong tossed at luffy was supposed to show a fishman karate technique where a few drops of water become powerful projectiles. It doesnt weaken luffy, Probably just surprises him. That scene was a bit odd with how things happened though it did look like that, ill just chock it up to luffy not being all that there because he was still in shock from zoro. But could've definitely been written a little better to explain those things.
Ah, that makes more sense. I think Nami added to the confusion when she refers to him as a “devil fruit eater” right after the splash and Luffy is disoriented. It really drew focus on the whole devil fruit idea.
@Greg Owen When the water tank broke and the sea water splashes on buggy, it did weaken buggy which is why he was crawling to the grand line map when luffy was also crawling to his straw hat.
The Explanation as to why Mihawk and Garp have Superhuman Strength and Reflexes and why Shanks is able to shoo away the Sea Beast in the beginning is not on the first season. It happens way later.
As for mihawk and garp, yes there is another "magic system" it's called haki, it can be learned by anyone, and it is the one thing that can hurt devil fruit users, like luffy who is made of rubber, he can't feel normal hits, but when it's infused with haki, you can hurt him, unfortunately it will take time until it is explained in the story, but the instances where it was shown in the show are these : when garp manages to beat luffy and throw a canon ball at him, when mihawk was able to see bullets and cut them as well as cutting a ship from distance, and the one that everyone missed, when shanks managed to scare away the sea beast by a certain scary look those were all instances of using haki, but it unfortunately it will only be explained late in the show
In anime, super strength moves (other than devil fruit) aren't begun to be explained until DEEP into the series. Early on, they just are what they are and those are the rules--no real rules.
Some clarification of a few of your questions: It’s less a map to the Grand Line and more a map to the *entrance* of the Grand Line. Yes it circles the globe, but it can’t be entered from the side because it’s sandwiched between the “Calm Belts” which are strips of still sea where wind doesn’t blow and a nest for the Sea Beasts. That mountain Nami pointed out at the end where the river flows upward is the only entrance to the Grand Line, it’s where they need to go. How much a Devil Fruit user is weakened by water depends on how much water they’re submerged in. They’re not significantly weakened until the water gets up to their knees. It’s also not explained but important to note that only standing water weakens them, not moving water like rain or waves, so despite how it looks, splashing them doesn’t actually do anything. That thing with Arlong was one of his moves from the manga “Water Shot” where he flings water from his hand with the force of a bullet, which is why Luffy flew back like that. And at this point in the story, you don’t know how non-Devil Fruit users can do what they do, but there is more than one power system in this world. For the sake of spoilers I won’t go into one of them, but it explain things like Shanks’s glare and Garp’s strength. Another power system is swordsmanship, which in the world of one piece is a lot more than swinging around blades. Skilled swordsman can send “flying slashes” like the one Mihawk used to cut Krieg’s ship in half. There’s also another power system that involves training the body to achieve superhuman feats, it’s normally taught to marines but characters like Kuro seem to have taken advantage of it, which is where his speed comes from. You’ll also learn about that one later on in the story. Sorry for the long read.
I see you've responded to someone else who explains why you can't sail straight to the Grand Line, when we get to the Grand Line itself though we'll get into additional reasons why it's not well charted. Suffice to say it's very, very, VERY hard to navigate.
So, the seawater issue is not a huge thing in the anime/manga. One little splash does not weaken the DF user. They have to be exposed to a lot of sea water for it to weaken them. The other power issue, well, One Piece is a 1000+ episode anime/manga. The second power system is hinted at quite early, but isn't fully introduced until around episode 400 of the anime, and I'm not sure what chapter that is in the manga. I'll tell you if you want to know, but be warned for spoilers. SPOILERS BELOW!!! The second power system is called Haki, and it doesn't become prevalent until much later on, but for the most part it's purpose is to give non DF users a way to keep up with DF users. It makes them much stronger, increases awareness, can negate some DF powers.
When buggy was splashed it did effect him. Thats why he was breathing heavily. Just getting wet will make you realy tired but it won't actuapy stop you from doing things. It also dosent last that long once your just damp your mostly fine.
One thing that may help to explain the devil fruit + water things is that moving water (and splatter/spray) has **less** of an effect on fruit-users, and that fishmen have a kind of hydrokinesis, though the live-action didn't really go into that much
So happy you enjoyed it! Did you tear up with the Nami reveal, when she's stabbing herself and Luffy steps in? The things you thought were inconsistent are explained and the anime progresses, so expect it will as the show does, too. The Grand Line (equator) is awash in their planets magnetic field so navigating it is impossible without both a map and a Log Pose (the plot of the next season). If you enter the Grand Line in the wrong place, the currents will destroy your ship. Also, around the meridian of the planet is a circular land mass, so to find entry to the other seas, you need the map to cross it. (Hence you get to see rivers flowing up mountains, as Nami hinted at.) We'll also find out in Season Two that the other characters are using, in effect, what is Chi (Haki in the story). They can do some crazy shit with it, you got a taste with Mihawk. You should look up Toni Toni Chopper and Nico Robin (my personal favorite character) as they'll drive season two. :)
The Nami moment was definitely emotional, but Sanji’s goodbye really got me. I can understand them following the manga and not revealing everything, but it would have been nice to get just a couple lines letting the audience know that there is a mystery but we’re not there yet so sit tight. But they already fit so much into 8 hours, it’s impressive enough. Can’t wait for season 2, but it’s going to be so far away! Might just have to start plugging away at to 350 hours of anime….
@@gregowen2022 Well, Chopper's story was so popular here in Japan that they turned the anime into a major motion picture here, which was enjoyed by all -- you will definitely cry. And Nico Robin's backstory will drive several seasons of the show and will introduce The World Government, politically ripe for these times. You know, Netflix has it. You should give a couple of episodes a watch. Just remember, the animation is 20 years old and changes with the times. :)
@@gregowen2022 The anime has a ton of very poor quality filler arcs and latter padding, so either skip those or get a digital Viz subscription and start on the manga archive that comes with it. They put every One Piece chapter in there as a selling point.
It’s important to keep in mind is that Oda, the creator of one piece, likes to keep the fans in the dark. The idea is that you are basically on this journey with the strawhats so if they are unaware of something then as the reader or viewer so will you. This is why venturing the world is so important because every island will unlock a portion of knowledge. The fandom loves engaging in theories of what things could be and their meaning. Creating your own head-canon is part of what makes one piece so fun and engaging.
I have read a couple of one piece mangas (like 30) and I really enjoyed watching the show. There was so much to enjoy, the music was really good, like you said how every episode felt like it’s own story felt really satisfying, I really like how whenever we see someone’s wanted poster the person that is wanted gets rid of it somehow. I think it works really well compared to the mangas and I would say work really well if you have or haven’t read them (or seen the manga, and of course don’t know for sure but it seemed like that). And yeah most of my complains were just with the devil fruit system and how it works with the ocean, in the manga I’m pretty sure the rules are: You lose the powers of the devil fruit while being wet You sink like a rock in the ocean (and thereby you can’t swim) (it was a while ago I read mangas so might not be 100% correct with the rules, but they are something like that) Great show, really recommended for both anime/manga fans and those who has seen nothing of it :D
The water doesn’t actually take away/negate the devil fruit ability it really just drains your stamina so the more water (not just seawater) you are exposed to the faster and more steep the drain is. You sink because when totally submerged you basically instantly lose all your strength and can’t move and either be saved by someone else or die.
The wanted poster reveals were very cool, I agree. Hopefully the next season will see another dialog where we get a little clarification on the devil fruit stuff
I'm so glad you liked it! Its awesome for me to see One Piece get this much attention! It's hilarious that you also made onigiri considering that's one of Zoro's signature moves. and using the leftovers to make it was very Sanji of you (Shoutout G8). So about the Grand Line map just know any knowledge that allows you to travel freely especially the Grand Line is highly restricted by the world government, so much so that you actually get their approval to travel there. also maps aren't super common in the One Piece world the sea is extremely dangerous, an average person is going to live their entire life on one island so pretty much only the Marines are going to have them since the Strawhat crew is the only pirate crew that I can think of that has a cartographer (Nami). Don't get me wrong every crew has a navigator, but once you get to the grand line you don't really use maps to travel island to island (this will be explained in season 2). About Garp and Mihawk there is another "magic system" so don't worry it didn't break any in universe rules it was just meant to be a mystery for new viewer just like in the source material where it didn't get explained for hundreds of chapters/episodes, and get ready for more mysteries because Oda never answers a mystery without introducing more. One Piece is like a hydra of mysteries, every answer creates more questions.
Arlong was a slave who became a slave runner when he got the chance. One Piece is full of other characters who were also slaves yet they did the right thing given the chance. Almost like real world. Some do the right thing. Others don’t.
Yeah Usopp suffers the most from the cutting room floor. The time compression in the show really leaves out a lot of his best character moments and the set up for the "brave warrior of the sea" vow that did exist in the source material.
If I’m remembering correctly,in the manga and the anime the devil fruit rules only apply if you’re submerged. The splashing thing was only added to the live action version.
I loved it, my wife who is not in any capacity also loved it. My daughter (8 yr) liked it up until Arlong who was a tad too scary for her. Sadly I agree that this success is will be difficult to replicate. 😢
Well the story gets way way better . Season one is the slow part of one piece. As long as Oda is involved I think they will be fine staying true to the story hopefully they have enough budget to make it not look really cheesy because east blue one piece is very tame compared to grand line and beyond.
it's not a dig at you exactly, I'm just curious how westerners that - like you said - are hyperfocused on gender stuff will react to one piece characters that would have all the hallmarks of "representation" but were originally written in the early 2000s
The map they were after wasn’t a map TO the Grand Line. It was a map OF the Grand Line. In the Grand Line compasses don’t work, and a lot of weird anime shit goes on, so it’s impossible to navigate without a map, but there are also very few maps, because the place is so dangerous. Very few people ever return with accurate maps, which is why the map was under guard by the marines.
I watched the anime up until episode 960 or so, and by what I've seen from clips and reviews it looks esthetically decent. I wonder how they are working out the pacing of the story and delivery of the lines.
The way I see politics in fiction is like this: Politics to serve the story - art (good worldbuilding / contains politics) Story there to serve politics - propaganda / political (see the conversation surrounding the last few years of Star Trek) An excellent example of this - see 'Hello Future Me' and his videos on writing revolutions in fantasy - revolutions are very political, but they make for excellent worldbuilding. Also just finished the first book of 'The Hierarchy' by James Islington (fantasy book) and it contains a protagonist who experiences colonialism by an oppressive empire - a very political subject, but it wasn't a commentary on real-world politics, it just made the story so much better.
In the manga and anime sanji’s bit is that he’s a straight up perv who goes crazy about every woman. It’s funny at some points but it is really overdone, so I’m happy they made him a lady’s man in OPLA
There is the devil fruit magic system, and there’s another magic system. The live action show changed the weakness for the devil fruit a little bit. In the original comic you have to be submerged a certain amount to be weakened. Like you could be in a shower and rain but not a tub. It also applies to all bodies of water, not just the “Mother Ocean” In the live action version it looks like splashes can affect you. So it was fully a live action mistake that Buggy wasn’t effected by the splash much in episode 2.
Best way to explian the sea water is a scene that was cut/ changed in the LA. In the original Arlong Park, Luffy gets trapped underwater, so his crew actually stretches his neck till he is above water so he doesn't drown till he can get freed. Sea water exhausts devil fruit users, but does not shut down their powers and they cannot swim, period.
Aw man, good review. the map bit tho, ill just say that it was stated in passing that there is a world government. Governments usually try to control the masses by withholding information from them. So it makes sense that grand lines maps are only found in naval bases. I debated on whether on or not to type this but I don't think the show will outright talk about government censorship of the grand line since it was mostly a show dont tell thing in this case and probably wont be covered going forward.
I'm not big on asparagus, but man that does look good. Addressing some of your points in no particular order: -In the manga, Sanji's attitude towards women is actually his main and only flaw. It's played for laughs, and sometimes it does hit the mark, but more often than not you're just gonna sigh through his shenanigans. On the other hand, if he didn't have that, he would almost be too perfect. -There is indeed a very good reason you can't just sail directly into the Grand Line, imo they should've have taken the time to let Nami explain it. -The show is adapted from a manga that was created in a time in which words like "woke" or "twitter" didn't exist. It does get suprisingly political at times, but I never got the feeling the author was trying to force his ideals onto his readers. -For Garp or Mihawk's strength, yeah that was one of my main concerns for a live adaptation. It reminds me of the first time I watched the movie Watchmen and got hella confused, not knowing that it was adapted from a comic book. In this universe, even regular humans with no special powers can get crazy, ridiculously strong. You get used to it, but it's definitely easier to digest in an anime / comic format than in live action.
Asparagus can be tricky, but I assure you it was as good as it looked. Unfortunately, live action has its limits, and I think that our brains simply expect certain things when looking at live actors, even if the setting is clearly a fantasy one. It’s so much easier to shrug your shoulders and just go along with crazy stuff when a cartoon character is doing it. Still excited for season 2, however. This new magic system and possibly sea beasts sounds cool!
About Garp and Mihawk having super human strength there IS a magic system for that but It is supposed to be showed later. Note: Garp is not supposed to show up fully till many many chapters later but the show shows him immediately. So about when you will know is a mystery to even us readers cause they changed stuff about when they want to tell.
The speech by Zorro's friend, about how as a man he will one day be swordsman superior to her because he will grow bigger, stronger, have a longer reach and there is nothing she can do to change that was an interesting and truthful moment....ask Andrew Klavan about that...
You may not have meant to do this, but I like how you made onigiri beside the bluefin tuna with sauteed asparagus. Onigiri, while it is a name for a food, also meant "demon slashing," name for one of Zoro's moves in the anime and manga with the whole name being Santouryu: Onigiri meaning Three-Swords Style: Demon Slashing. Your dish reminds me of Zoro and Sanji bickering at each other.😂
Ha! I had no idea it held deep meaning, but I’m glad. It’s embarrassing to admit now, but I just made it because onigiri is delicious and I had extra tuna. Sanji says don’t waste!
There's two ways to obtain powers in this world, it's either through Devil Fruits or powers that Garp, Shanks and Mihawk have demonstrated, can't say what it's called or how it functions since you might not like being spoiled.
I am sure others explained why you need a map, about the whole calm belt thing, but it is also important to note the rarity of those maps, yes if the pirates had good mappers they would draw their own map, but why would they share it so others get to the one piece first ? Also, the marins absolutely don't want more pirates going to the grand line, so it makes sense that all maps of the grand line are only giving to marine personnels amd you actually can't find them in books, otherwise nami could've seen one in a book and redrew it for arlong, but instead she had to go on a solo mission to get this rare kind of map
They basically got a map to the front door of the grand line. The whole world isn't connected really. Most don't ever travel outside their island. That's all I can say without spoilers.
Do you want to know about the magic system? there is another magic power system and Kuro (superhuman agility), Shanks(whatever he did with the sea monster), Garp(tossing cannonballs like nothing), Mihawk(splitting battleships in half) and the fishman(flipping houses with just their hands, also and fishman karate) did not eat a devil fruit, and they use these powers in various capacities. It will be explained way way way later, and it makes sense and it is pretty solid once you get there.
The reason Luffy was weakened by Arlong's splash was because he threw the water hard enough to make Luffy flip several times. Everybody would be, with or without Devil Fruit. Fishmen have a special fighting style called fishmen karate, which didn‘t really get established in the LA, but Arlong's splash can be considered a fishmen karate technique.
All your questions especially about Garp and Mihawk's strength is venturing to spoiler territory. In fact that will also explain Shank's "power" on how he scared off the Sea King. That is how Oda writes. He does alot oof forshadowing and he will never forget what he foreshadows hundreds of episodes later.
The map wasn't the main plot device in the source material and not nearly as rare as portrayed in the live action. They never got kidnapped or attacked 3 times over it. I didn't like that change for the following reasons (MILD SPOILERS)... 1. A regular compass works in the East Blue so finding the entrance to the Grandline should be anything but impossible. A map should just make it a lot easier. 2. Maps become obsolete very soon. 3. Buggy and Arlong both come from there so they should already know where it is. It's to the very south. Southwest from Loguetown to be exact. Maybe Buggy forgot or sucks at navigating but surely not Arlong. 4. Arlong was loaded and had connections to the marines. How was he not able to get his hands on the map? (He wasn't after it in the anime/manga).
The fish-man slavery (and human slavery for that matter) in One Piece is part of the original source material. The complaint I hear about it, which I think is valid, is that they introduce that element too early. We didn't get that in Arlong Park, we got that information in a later arc that retroactively changes the context of Arlong Park and adds dimensions to it, as well as altering relationships with characters we haven't even introduced yet. It mostly, in the source, gets explored 20 or so arcs from where we're at and should we get that far, it threatens to undermine that arc a bit.
Buggy was affected, that's why he and Luffy were crawling at the same speed after the thing they hold dearest. And there is more at work beyond Devil Fruits, but it isn't until we hit in the 400s of chapters and episodes before we see it explained. Mihawk, Garp, Shanks, they are shown as just ridiculously strong people til it gets explained
The map thing will be clearly explained season 2 if it follows the manga/anime. As for the second issue, it’s intentionally shown that way to make the viewer guess. Yet, it is also theorized that we are seeing the story from Luffy’s perspective.
The major issue I have with the story is Baratie timeline. Strawhats fight Kuro at night, get Merry and set sail in the morning. They meet Garp immediately, and go into the fog. Garp calls Mihawk who is busy fighting Don Krieg online. And by the dawn Mihawk is on Baratie. And meanwhile Gin shows up telling that he was starwing for a WEEK, since his crew was annihilated on the GRAND LINE. Like, WHAT? Aren't you've been beaten today and in the vicinity of Baratie?
They never confirmed Gin is part of Don Krieg's crew, so they might've removed their connection in the live action. Since they changed the story, that connection is no longer important, anyway.
The success of the show is not because of "Netflix" per se, but it's primarily because of the Production Team who actually care for the original. Especially the head writer, executive producer and show runner Matt Owens who is a huge one piece fan and it is HIM who convinced Oda sensei that he can do it and how much one piece means to him. And ofc Oda sensei sealed the deal by demanding creative control so that Netflix can't pull anything fishy later. But a long a Matt Owens is on the job, it'll not go bad. As he understands one piece deeper than any casual fan out there and he is way too deep into one piece and he owes it so much that he can't ruin it purposefully. And we saw the result in the season 1
Regarding your criticism towards the show: 1 - In the Manga/Anime, the map is just a small plot point introduced and resolved in the Orange Town arc (not the holy grail of the season) 2 - Lets go step by step: A) As a devil fruit user, you must be submerged to a certain point to not move (they can also feel a little "debilitated" if body parts such as arms are submerged but they can still fight and use their powers) B) Unlike the Manga/Anime where it is explained crystal clear that Arlong is throwing water so fast that it feels like small knives/needles, the LA version just has him throwing water at Luffy resulting in him feeling weak (breaking the rules in the process) 3) Garp and Mihawk's "capabilities" are fully explained later on (no spoilers from me but just make sure to pay attention until it happens 😉) These are sadly the consequences of trying to condense 95 chapters into 8 episodes
With your problem about the map and how mihawk is so strong, the reason it wasn’t talked about in the show is mainly since, they really haven’t gotten to a point in the story where they could give an explanation yet, for the map you’d have to see the calm belt, which would get explained around the next arc if season 2 comes out, as for mihawk’s and garp’s absurd strength, that’d be around season 6 or so...maybe read the manga, that way you’ll get a lot answered before season 2 shows up One piece is a great manga and someone who seems to enjoy great storytelling you’ll love it
The biggest issue with the devil fruit system is that luffy learns more about his fruit and fruits in general as the story goes on. When he leaves fusia village you just know that he can’t swim you later learn that the water drains his energy. Then later you learn that it’s not a total you get touched by water your screwed it’s the amount of water. Basically if it rained he’s not pass out an die but you get submerged under water you’ll basically lose all your energy and drown. It doesn’t actually negate the devil fruit either. The point about arlong splashing luffy is that that’s actually an ability fishman have and that it’s not quite the same as if someone splashed you at a pool it’s actually got some power behind it. Ultimately in season you have even scratched the surface with devil fruit. When talking about the other characters showing abilities that’s not explained mainly because luffy doesn’t know. The live action actually moved up a few reveals like 400 chapters so there is a lot luffy has no clue about that you’ll learn along the way as he learns more on his journey.
The map contains the direct route of entering the grand line safely. Otherwise you cant freely enter the grand line as it is seperated by a dangerous stretch of water filled with sea beasts.
It's not a map to but a map of the Grand Line. You won't understand why they needed one until you see it. There are only two main rules for a devil fruit: 1. The Sea steals your stamina. 2. You cannot swim. In the manga, 1 branches out to any natural standing body of water. Everything that seems throw away or not well put together will make more sense as the story goes on. Sanji and Ussop get ton of development don't worry 😁 Really enjoyed your review. Gonna subscribe and check out your other stuff. Will be here for anything OP related no matter what 👍🏿
I suppose the gap between Garp/Mihawk and our crew is exasperated in the live action, as Luffy and Co appear to be normal human level strenghts. Originally, Luffy Zoro and Sanji are actual superhumans and mop the floor in East Blue, no contest. Even against Arlong. So the suspension of disbelief is easier with Mihawk given those cicrumstances. Theyre severly nerfed in the live action, which kinda eats into the bigger theme of the East Blue itself. It wasnt about overcoming enemies, it was about freeing their new crewmates from the shackles theyve put upon themselves. They werent supposed to struggle until season 2 and entering the Grand Line
The map isn't to get TO the grand line. It is a map of (the first half) of the grand line. Anyway the grand line is a fucked up place and having a map is very useful there.
Arlong is considerably nore complex than he appears at first glance. You wont learn that until 600 or so chapters in but around that point you get the most nuanced and well done story about generational hate, oppression, and what it does to people ive seen in a long, long time. In the same story where people chuck cannonballs with their bare hands, split themselves into multiple pieces, and look like Nezumi.
Buggy is affected by it, he crawls towards the map. Of course, he's just a little bit wet, he's not soaked in water, but he does struggle to get to the map. Funny, because I saw another reactor complaining about Buggy going for the map in all four being too goofy XD Well, he goes in all four towards the map because he's been weakened.
The 'water splash' from Arlong can be explained via the anime and probable the manga aswell, where he is shown and mentally commented by Sanji when Arlong flings a handful of water at Sanji that the water that hits him is like a 'shotgun' in force, which is also reinforced further in the anime and manga where fishmen do even more crazy things with handfuls of water. So instead of the somewhat powerful 'splash' of water you saw in the live action you can consider it like a full body shotgun to Luffy, though I honestly have not personally watched this scene in whole, just pieced together from various reactions, and I do not recall them showing this 'weakness' you describe, so if he was out of breath and staggered you can probably consider it what I suggest it is, if he became weak and was just unable to move like shown when he started to drown then I can only guess made a mistake when it came to that moment, and/or the buggy moment, but more likely that moment.
Idk if you're going to read this but I'll just say it anyway. One Piece World as already explained to you by many people is divided into 4 quadrants called Blues(North, South, West, East). The thing that divides this spherical world into 4 are the *Red Line* (Super Continent) and the *Grand Line* (band of sea, split into two parts because the Red Line cuts it in half). Surrounding the Grand Line on both sides are the *Calm Belts.* They're called the Calm Belts because of how usually calm they are. No wind and water currents. Because of this, they are where Sea Kings(Sea Beasts like the one that ate Shanks' arm) usually dwell and breed. Getting past the Calm Belt is usually impossible in an age where majority of boats still uses sails and along with the threat of Sea Kings, only an idiot or somebody confident in their strength would even try. As for the magic system. Devil Fruits Users are weak to standing/still water. Getting submerged usually weakens them to the point of being incapable to even move. Moving water like rain or splash usually don't weaken them at all. Other than the standard weakness to water(any water not just seawater) they're also either immune or weak to certain things because of their devil fruit. Like Luffy being basically immune to blunt damage but very vulnerable to piercing and slashing which in contrast Buggy is immune to piercing and slashing but blunt damage is good against him. As for the unusual feats of strength for certain characters, this is because of another power system but also because the vast difference of the capability and physical limits of the humans in the One Piece world compared to ours. There's legit human characters(no fruits or other power) that are just physically gigantic, strong and unusually tough. In fact humans of this world are weirder in that there's many that you would consider to be subspecies that has weird traits like long arms, long legs, third eyes etc. Anyway as I mention, there's another power system, it's called Haki. This is a power system that is used by majority of the characters especially the strongest ones. Mihawk and Garp are representative of the "strongest" characters in the story so it makes sense that they know of and use it. It's also a hint that Shanks who could use it is just as strong or stronger.
To be fair, I’m not actually sure if this was explained in the manga before Reverse Mountain either.
I don't think they're doing Loguetown anymore if they already did the barrel thing.
The seawater kind of affected buggy, he crawls to the map instead of walking
well, all devil fruit eater are weak against the seawater
@@MrCantspeak i know, just responding to a question
Also the reason why Fishman Karate works against devil fruit users is explained later on with Jinbe. Its not so much the sea water that hurt luffy but the way fishman karate works. (Matt Owens definitely took a creative liberty with this interaction)
@@MuscleboundKage But Arlong doesn't know Fishmen Karate like Jimbei does which is to be hurt people from the inside. That's why in the anime he had to resolve to sharp attacks like his teeth, nose, swords and water darts.
@@zackfross98 He does, he do it to Zoro and Sanji.
@@Lonn715
@@Lonn715 luffy stupidly got himself stuck in one of the tiles and arlong just gets the tile and throws him into the seawater pool
I’m excited to see more of the world get developed. Season 2 come quick!
@@gregowen2022 throughout one piece you get froeshadowed of the other power system. in season 1 its been shown 3 times already but audience dont get it confirmed
and Shanks.. The second type of power system for normal people
For the magic system: the sea water did affect buggy, but the show didn't do a good enough job showing it, so to me, I let it slide.
It’s a little frustrating, but a cool idea of having Luffy and the audience learn things together. I can’t wait for more
@@gregowen2022 i think the best way to explain sea water weakness is like this: when submerged, they will lose strength and become exhausted super fast so even if they know how to swim they will sink in exhaustion like immediatly, they will recover when outside the water, there is another related weakness shown later, that will make it more visible.
Altho some funny jokes do come through the problem starts later on
@@ehellstrom7127Wanji is peak medium doesnt matter
I agree with you on the devil fruit rules, but NOT the other superhuman abilities rules. The show plants little easter eggs throughout the season to make you more and more curious about how the world operates: the warlords, the snails, baroque works, the fish men, even the grand line...it's not really meant to be explained right off the bat, but to invoke your curiosity and make you continuously question what you think you know.
SPOILER ALERT:
There is indeed a whole other "magic system" apart from the devil fruits, but it doesn't really get explained until much later in the story.
I'm a little worried for the show moving forward given the other types of fruits we'll see
@@theanimeunderworld8338 not gonna lie, this is a concern of mine too. BUT, the fact that this season turned out good AT ALL is nothing short of a miracle, so you never know...
@erubin100 the east blue was kind of normal for a fantasy but the grandline is where trouble will be. Can't always be inside pubs like season 1
Giants, strange animals, new fruits, wild islands, new species, it's going to be tough
At this point in the show Zoro is like lvl 5 and Mohawk is lvl 75. Also, the power/magic system really hasn't been explained yet. Although I would say sometimes in the anime it isn't always consistent.
75? More like Level 97 lol

Honestly there should just be a LV. ??? above Mihawks head because we have no idea what him going all out looks like. Especially considering he is Shanks Rival.
Interesting to think of it in level terms, haha. Mihawk can have a skull and red bar next to his, lol
The same I had to watch the video twice. One for the show review and second for the dish being cooked

Accidental, but I’ll take it
I actually didn't care about the show, not gonna watch it, so I was just entertained with the cooking bit😂😊
Finished the show, now onto the anime!
good luck on your long, long, long,.....LONG journey!
A long journey that you will NOT regret. 😊
Its worth it and amazing journey
I've started watching the anime before the LA came out and I'm now 3 episodes into the Thriller Bark Arc at episode 339. I'm enjoying this massive journey a lot, so I hope you will too!
I hope to join you one day, I’m so intimidated though
How are they going to adapt that without ballooning the budget to unsustainable levels.
if they were smart, they would just throw truckloads on money at it.
@@erubin100 I don’t think you understood my point
@@erubin100 Perhaps their point is money isn't the answer anymore, because it can only get you so far. Many ridiculous things happen later on in many fight scenes, which would look ridiculous in any live action setting. I'm thinking of Sykpiea Arc for instance... Or CP9
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the live action, the fight scenes in general were already much more subdued compared to the anime equivalent making them seem way less grand in scale (and importance).
I hope you didn't put oregano into this dish 😂
OREGANO IS FOR SAVAGES!!
Never! 😂
@@aldrinsaclolospit
the answer is the map for the Grandline is EXCLUSIVELY controlled by the Marines
Yeah but problem starts later on
@@royalfun1031i'm wondering wtf they will do about this island where sanji was trained during the skip
I’m looking forward to it. It was confusing, admittedly, but it’s nice to have something to look forward to
The map to the Grand Line is not a big deal in the original if I remember right.
I really hope we get the scene where they accidently enter the calm belt. Imagine the scale of those monsters in the live action
I enjoyed the one monster scene, I don’t know what to expect, but I do hope for more monsters
"How does Mihawk have superhuman reflexes and strength, how does Garp have superhuman reflexes and strength?"
They don't. It's just the nature of this world that the upper limits of human potential are much greater. Still very difficult to reach, but not a superpower in itself.
That said, more things may still be explained later, potentially much later. Thing about One Piece is set ups and pay offs can be separated by more than a decade sometimes.
Calm belts and Red Line are why people cannot sail into the Grand Line using common sense and knowledge in this world.
I feel like just a couple lines would have made that clear and would have resolved a lot of confusion, but I still really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for season 2!
People will get this answer at episode 1 or 2 next season, they will not be lost
There is a lot lot of things in one piece
Same with politics (but i'm not talking about today US politics obviously and fortunatly)
@@gregowen2022 It's also a world like north korea where the government keeps maps out of everyone so the population can't go wherever they want.
Usopp is the most underrated. I still have faith he will have his biggest moment in elbaf
if they get to Water 7, he certainly will...
He has plenty of room for growth, and I can’t wait to see it, he’s so sweet!
I really hope you read the manga after this. It's such a beautiful story with amazing artwork. One piece is a full blown epic.
I’m hoping to get into manga, it sounds interesting. Picked up vol 1 of My Hero Academia the other day, since it’s one of the few I’ve even heard of. I was a little confused that it was backward at first, haha
@@gregowen2022 Lol 😂 The backwards reading definitely takes some time to get used to. My Hero is an awesome series as well. Enjoy!
We live in a great timeline where we get a live action adaptation of probably the best manga/anime that even normies love
I’m impressed that fans like it. Feels like every adaptation is almost designed to piss fans off these days. Big win for fans and fan service
@Greg Owen When the water tank broke and the sea water splashes on buggy, it did weaken buggy which is why he was crawling to the grand line map when luffy was also crawling to his straw hat.
I'm new to OP and I quickly fell in love with the live action because of word of mouth.
Some clarification of a few of your questions:
It’s less a map to the Grand Line and more a map to the *entrance* of the Grand Line.
I’m excited to see them develop the second power system. Seems right to have a counter to the overpowered devil fruit
@@gregowen2022imagine how a lightning devil fruit user react fighting someone whose made of rubber
(Hence you get to see rivers flowing up mountains, as Nami hinted at.)
We'll also find out in Season Two that the other characters are using, in effect, what is Chi (Haki in the story).
@@gregowen2022there was a hint, actually. It's a blink and you'll miss it moment with Shank's eye.
And yeah most of my complains were just with the devil fruit system and how it works with the ocean, in the manga I’m pretty sure the rules are:
You lose the powers of the devil fruit while being wet
You sink like a rock in the ocean (and thereby you can’t swim)
(it was a while ago I read mangas so might not be 100% correct with the rules, but they are something like that)
Great show, really recommended for both anime/manga fans and those who has seen nothing of it :D
The Grand Line Map is important because it shows how you enter the Grand Line. You can’t just sail directly into it.
I’m so happy they made it family friendly, too! My 15yo wants to check it out now, I think she’s really going to like it.
"is it woke" reviewers when bon chan shows up in season 2:
it's not a dig at you exactly, I'm just curious how westerners that - like you said - are hyperfocused on gender stuff will react to one piece characters that would have all the hallmarks of "representation" but were originally written in the early 2000s
Will you check out the anime as a comparison, even if it's just the east blue saga?
I’m going to try, but I’m so overwhelmed! I have paralysis just thinking about getting started
I watched the anime up until episode 960 or so, and by what I've seen from clips and reviews it looks esthetically decent. I wonder how they are working out the pacing of the story and delivery of the lines.
The way I see politics in fiction is like this:
Politics to serve the story - art (good worldbuilding / contains politics)
Story there to serve politics - propaganda / political (see the conversation surrounding the last few years of Star Trek)
An excellent example of this - see 'Hello Future Me' and his videos on writing revolutions in fantasy - revolutions are very political, but they make for excellent worldbuilding.
It also applies to all bodies of water, not just the “Mother Ocean”
In the live action version it looks like splashes can affect you. So it was fully a live action mistake that Buggy wasn’t effected by the splash much in episode 2.
it has to be mother ocean. hence thats why they have seastone
There is a sanji's cookbook you can check it out
Aw man, good review. the map bit tho, ill just say that it was stated in passing that there is a world government.
That does make sense! I guess they don’t want more people joining the pirate bs in the grand line, so that tracks
I'm not big on asparagus, but man that does look good.
Addressing some of your points in no particular order:
-In the manga, Sanji's attitude towards women is actually his main and only flaw.
Exactly Oda nerfs Wanji
One piece is a tale of liberty; there's so much telling you to be yourself and fight for the things you care
I dig the beard, Greg.
Sigh, I liked it too. Back to work now, so it had to go. 😭
Calling that your favorite character may be Sanji up front, for some reason
😂🤣, you got me
All your questions especially about Garp and Mihawk's strength is venturing to spoiler territory.
Mihawk, Garp, Shanks, they are shown as just ridiculously strong people til it gets explained
the cooking segment was a nice touch
Good job on the review and the cooking.
Thank you very much!

Regarding your criticism towards the show:
1 - In the Manga/Anime, the map is just a small plot point introduced and resolved in the Orange Town arc (not the holy grail of the season)
2 - Lets go step by step:
A) As a devil fruit user, you must be submerged to a certain point to not move (they can also feel a little "debilitated" if body parts such as arms are submerged but they can still fight and use their powers)
B) Unlike the Manga/Anime where it is explained crystal clear that Arlong is throwing water so fast that it feels like small knives/needles, the LA version just has him throwing water at Luffy resulting in him feeling weak (breaking the rules in the process)
3) Garp and Mihawk's "capabilities" are fully explained later on (no spoilers from me but just make sure to pay attention until it happens 😉)
These are sadly the consequences of trying to condense 95 chapters into 8 episodes
It's on my holiday binge list so I didn't watch the video but I left a like and a comment to feed the algorithm
That is much appreciated. I hope you enjoy it when the time comes!
@gregowen2022 got your back Greggers
With your problem about the map and how mihawk is so strong, the reason it wasn’t talked about in the show is mainly since, they really haven’t gotten to a point in the story where they could give an explanation yet, for the map you’d have to see the calm belt, which would get explained around the next arc if season 2 comes out, as for mihawk’s and garp’s absurd strength, that’d be around season 6 or so...maybe read the manga, that way you’ll get a lot answered before season 2 shows up
One piece is a great manga and someone who seems to enjoy great storytelling you’ll love it
when you see the grand line, you will understand why the map is so important
And there technically is another system in play that's not explained until a MUCH later point in the story and has to do with a person's willpower.
One Piece doesn't need a WOKE 😂. They already have all humanity issue in their stories
Sanji and Ussop get ton of development don't worry 😁
Really enjoyed your review.
Oh those extra magic bits youre on about? those come later, well, will be explained later.
I’m so excited to find out!
I don't know how you couldn't see that Buggy got affected by the seawater but great review!
power system is introduce slowly even in the manga and anime.. relax youll get there..
The other magic systems that say Garp and Hawkeye use are not explained in the Manga, either until much later. And Sanji is a hound dog😂
