- Movie Prop Collectors was fortunate to a special interview and showing of Judy Garland's Ruby Slippers she wore as Dorothy in the MGM classic film, The Wizard of Oz..
The color of the Ruby Slippers vary depending on lighting. With indoor lighting the color varies from a deep burgundy to mid red. With natural outside lighting the color is a brighter red.
The Ruby Slippers, and many other rare and historic pieces of Hollywood history will be auctioned in a 3 day auction on December 15th, 16th, and 17th, at The Paley Center, in Beverly Hills, CA.
Those shoes definitely looked fantastic in Technicolor. That deep red.
My life would be complete just to place my hands on them. All of my Wizard of Oz memorabilia combined isnt worth a fraction of these shoes. Heaven 👠

The authorities got a tip off a few years ago, and now months ago the shoes were retrieved, and are back with the Insurers. Michael, the owner at the time of the theft, I believe will get first option to re-acquire them (as his claim was paid out after the theft) ... waiting keenly to hear what happens next!

The owner of the other slippers could have paid to have them stolen. His shoes have Tripled in value and he will always have a pair that only he knows about.

Amazing. Joe Maddalena seems like a really genuine film fan and it's a pleasure to see him describe these props in detail and see his enthusiasm outside of the frenetic show he hosts.
@RubySlippersProject Thank you very much for the kind words. I wanted to take as many close shots as possible, and Joe was kind enough to allow me to. The color varied depending on how the light hit them so I tried to have no additional light sources. Hope everyone enjoys :)
There is a reason the shoes dont look as ruby red as they do in the film.If they were made in a ruby red they would appear almost orange in technicolour,so the shade had to be lighter to make a good transition in technicolour.
Holy wow. I think my mouth opened all the way to the floor and stayed there during the close ups of these EPIC shoes. I was actually stunned when he said they might go for 2 to 3 million at auction. I expected 10 million easy! 😳🤭❤️
Thanks for you comment :). Being you believe you see/hear the "owners always talking about auctioning items", you need to ask those same "owners" why they choose to sell things. I can't answer for them. The Ruby Slippers above are now owned by the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, CA.and are supposed to be on display in 2017 when the museum is schedueled to open. The Smithsonian also has a pair of Ruby Slippers, and there are other pairs privately owned as well. One pair were stolen and never recovered from a museum while on loan. I am not sure if The Academy Museum also has one of Judy's dresses as their are a few of them out there. Hope I have helped to answer your questions.
They didn't sell at auction. They sold afterward to a team of "Dream Donors" including Stephen Spielburg and Leonardo DiCaprio and were donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Museum which is being built now :)

while they are the "beauty" pair. and omg they are stunning!!!!!! they are not the pair used for the clicking of her heels, if you really look closely in that shot in the movie you can clearly see from the top view that the right and left shoes in that shot are from 2 different pairs of ruby slippers. the toe lengths are completely different and one bow is far more angled than the other, there were actually said to have been up to 12 pairs made for the film but only the 4 we know of now survive. Id actually guess theses ones here were the Wicked Witch Of the East pair, there's like no wear damage its all aging. and the WWE pair was known to have a slightly higher heel than the ones Judy wore throughout the film. Im also thrilled to know that the stolen pair has been recovered! and its funny its actually the corresponding pair to the miss-matched pair in the Smithsonian. together they make make up 2 complete pairs of ruby slippers.

Those are real ruby. I really like to have those in my room somewhere up high. I just play to honor Julie Garland.
They have always been this dark color, due to technicolor in those days over exposing colors, if they were really Red they would have come out bright Orange. Also not many people know but Dorothy's blouse actually Pink, technicolor makes it White.
I'm not sure if it's just the lighting in the room or what, but it looks like the colour has sadly faded. Which i suppose is understandable after this amount of time. But the bows definitely slightly more red, whereas the rest of the shoes almost look like a pink colour.
Believe it or not, depending on how the shoes are lighted affects the color. They always were a burgundy color and appear bright red under the right bright lights in the movie. I used no light but the light in the room while filming. If I had a bright light shined on the slippers they would appear red as in the film :) .
Debbie Reynolds once told me the story of how she was able to acquire a pair of ruby slippers.🤫
This is outstanding to see (the video images are great, patina and all)..If they infact, did not sell, they quite simply should be donated to a museum. In my opinion there is no price on these slippers... I believe they belong to the world and the world should see them upclose when ever they get a chance.

Yes there were/are. It is believed about 6 or 7 pairs were created based on the numbers written in the slippers still around today.
They made multiple pairs as back ups, and for Judy's stand in, as well as a pair with a different design that was never used in the film, but that are seen in test photographs
Tyler Hastings theres a youtube video thats about 45 mins that explains all of them. I think it was a history channel thing or somethin. Its outdated, but it was interesting. I find these shoes as bout as fascinating as the Titanic.

After the doubles sold for 150,000, Albert Samuels was able to buy this pair for the same price in lieu of another auction. I wished the shoes had not been mix matched b/c I prefer the larger bows. Yet, thankful they survived ! Shame on Kent Warner who retained the two best pairs and offered the Auction "As the Only Pair" for millions to view at the Smithsonian. Once in a private collection will never be seen again. Thrilled this pair is now at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures thanks to celebrities who made it happen. Joe Maddalena is famous for selling So many Oz items. Sincerely wish he would wear gloves to preserve and protect.
I thought the Ruby Slippers were at a theme park that went under and some one stole them from the display and lost to history

I don't think this is the pair from the clip they showed because if you watch the movie closely there is a strand of sequins missing from the left heel. From the bow down. They isn't any missing on this pair.
They actually bought it for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS). They give out the Academy Awards (Oscars).
ihave an idea that there is another pair of slippers that judy had in her possession and gave as a gift to a big star in London in the very early 70s,they were very great friends,i worked on a west end show he was starring in and remrmber it well.........

No, they aren't pink, if you watch the video about the auction they just had a few weeks ago for the actual dress that sold for 450,000 I believe, they show many close up shots of the dress, and it is most certainly not pink. Not trying to argue, just thought you might be interested :)
If you're so fascinated by them then here's a little tidbit for you. I've seen them up close. I knew Kent Warner, the person who snatched them from the studios. He kept the best pair in hius living room and whenever I went there...there they were.

The Western Costume Ruby Slippers were not used in the movie. The Innes Shoe Company were used for the ruby slippers.
Debbie Reynolds did have a pair of Western Costume slippers but I've heard that she has since sold them. She thought they were the one's Judy wore in the film but weren't.
I have contacted Western Costume because I was interested in purchasing a pair of ruby slippers, because they had extras left over, but it would have cost me $5,000. I passed on that. Now I make my own.
