This is not more advanced than the S Class. What exactly is there more here than the facelifted S Class already has? The A8's technology is being overhyped. The S Class also has new 48V electrics and enhanced drive pilot. And why would one need it to be electric. It wouldn't work with the lack of infrastructure an charging times and immature battery technology.
Hey Thomas , I've been faithfully watching your great reviews for almost 2 years now and I thought I would say : "Hello from Vancouver BC, Canada!". We would love to have some more Germans here :) ...If only for their JS Bach and their cars.
I strongly recommend to watch the dynamic driving part later in the video, very beautiful in the hills with curvy roads and also quite astonishing driving performance - was a lot of fun!
Superb review of the 2018 Audi A8L. Thomas, you are by far the best automobile reviewer I've ever seen. I had a 2001 Audi A8L and loved it. Best car I've ever driven. Large car that handled like a sports car. Your review has given me a desire for another.
I was about to comment on that :) Great review Thomas. This is a superb luxury car but it's exterior styling is very tradional looking. The interior is where it truly shines.
The attention to detail of the team behind the review is astounding! Usually, the review from other channels don't take care of trivial details like cleaning the fingerprints on the piano black interior parts and the screen while taking passing video shots. They cleaned it and made it very presentable. Also notice the nerves of steel of the camerawoman/cameraman! Steady in all situations! It is subtle but important details such as these that make your channel the most impressive! Thank you Thomas and the lovely team behind Autogefühl for making this possible. On another note, I find the approach of Volkswagen group towards not providing luxurious alternatives like high quality fabrics instead of the same old leather on seat surfaces. The seats of the Japanese Toyota Century is a solid case to prove just that! Also to remember is that our beds (the most comfortable part of our homes) are not usually leather! Fabrics keep the interior more breathable and it is also sustainable to the environment! On that note, could you also do a review of the Toyota Century? I know, the logistics of going to Japan to get it done is a big task, but it will be worth it. Thank you once again. Keep up the great work! - Ghanshyam T. Premnath (Student. TU Braunschweig, Braunschweig)
thank you so much for your kind words. Indeed we are looking at every single detail of production and have a big effort for every single minute. It's great when people realize that!
This was an excellent video. I'm so glad that you're not shouting or speaking too quickly like other car journalists do. The info of the vehicle was explained meticulously, and your observations on use and possible issues were insightful. I've subscribed! Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Thomas, you’ve done it again! Your review of the 2018 BMW 750 last year helped me to perfectly configure my 750, which I love more now than I did the day I brought it home last July. And now you’ve given me the information I need to configure the new A8L, which will replace my 2012 A8L later this year. It’s great to be able to hear intelligent, unbiased opinions. Aside from your bias against “animal skin” which , by the way, almost everyone else calls “leather” :-) , one really can’t go wrong taking your opinions into consideration. Herzlichen Dank für die hilfreiche Information!
Loved the review of this great car Thomas. In the UK it just beat the S Class in this segment in the WhatCar? awards. Well deserved. Just a comment about the steering wheel. I agree with what you said, but if you take a distance view of the chrome lines and connect them together you can actually see that it resembles the front grill, just like the logo you pointed out. I think from a pure design aspect this is absolutely amazing. That’s what makes an Audi an Audi.
Astonishing car, so much technology in it and it's time for new Transporter movie with this car of course. Great review Thomas, really enjoying your and everyone else who work for this channel, so much attention to details is great.
Great review again. I got the chance to see it in detail and stay inside the A8 at IAA, also I checked the S Class several times, in the end still the S class is my favorite and for me was more comfortable. Regarding those glossy parts and touch screens, I think it is too much... Not a fan of fake exhaust either. But of course, A8 is still a great car overall.
Kind regards to Katharina! The amount of work and research that's gone into these videos - as always - kudos. 35:41 the Side Assist didn't help too much here - your motorcycle 'life-saver' shoulder-check was more effective! 38:09 an interesting illustration! And some drivers don't want the car to overrule you - some switch off an active Lane Assist for example. Agree Thomas, it's an interesting technical-dinosaur; and personally I'd want a much smaller compact car! Many Thanks team.
Autogefuhl - I'm biased, I like Suzuki! Reasonably small and a reasonable reliability record! I am biased, this A8 LWB is interesting, and I am glad they make it, but it is not my type of car, too complicated & expensive...!
I drive an Audi A4, and my favorite thing about the car is the simplicity of the controls. I love the MMI interface and having the rotary knob to control while driving. Unfortunately, this new MMI system seems like a step backward. why take away the rotary knob?
great documentry Thomas . always goin the extra mile thats why you stand above the rest ! amazin tech in this Audi . so who makes the best seats then . ? audi or volvo 👍
thanks Dave! Good question, indeed I also find that Volvo has great seats. Those ones here are also amazing, from the form. So sad that both Audi and Volvo dont offer so many animal skin alternatives as surfaces :/
Though obviously divisive, I think that Audi's philosophy with design is really working out. It feels like they don't want their cars to stand out in that you can pick them out from a half a mile away, but when you get closer and all the smaller design elements come together they just look beautiful to me. It's a car you can scoot around in without attracting too much attention. I'm not a fan of all that glossy black in the interior though from a practical perspective even if you clean it regularly, seems like you couldn't keep that clean after a few minutes of use.
Thats a dream: An Autogefühl documentary about the beautiful new A8 in the wonderful Catalonia 😱😘👏 Audi has probably chosen a design evolution instead of a revolution because it is important not to stand out in this segment! The progress to the predecessor is definitely in the whole car to see and the new operating concept I find through the touchscreen with haptic feedback, the buttons well replaced, very successful! 👍 Audi AI after level 3, the new suspension as well as the new innovations are the new benchmark in the upper class and we will soon see them in the upcoming face-lined Audis. And it's finally time again: Vorsprung durch Technik💪😍
Thank you for the review, first hour felt like a test drive together with a sales consultant. Later it got much more interesting. The active-predictive suspension test was great. The question about the radar sensors in bad weather was excellent. Looks like they still do not have a possibility to disable the radar functionality using the active cruise control in bad weather. You pay premium and in the end you got no cruise control at all in rainy weather :))
It will be great to see the tech introduced here trickle down to, say, the A7 and A5, which are predominantly driver's cars and not chauffeur cars for board members. Intriguing, nimble sporty cars if you want them to be, disconnected, serene floaters if you don't: That would be perfect! Great review, Thomas!
Great comment Thomas on the fact that this vehicle has so many complicated features, that if it was to go wrong sometime in the future it would be very expensive to fix.Having said that I have just purchased one that is 1 year old ( €37,000 ) as opposed to (€82.500) new...I also insisted that I have a full 3 years warranty for the very reason stated.I will be trading in after the warranty has finished.Great review as always!!!😀👍👏
Thomas, I have a very good suggestion for future reviews. Since you have such great reviews with in-depth footage, it would be nice to have more footage of engineering aspects of the vehicles. So, how about putting each vehicle you review on a lift (get access to one) and get some shots of the suspension engineering and under the engine covers? It would be interesting to see the actual quality of components used underneath the surface. Edit- Not the press drives, but the regular reviews.
Thanks! Yeah indeed that would only be possible for home reviews. Big effort and it is hard to find someone to cooperate for that. Plus, you can imagine that the manufacturers are really keen on forbidding this. Some people already to test cars on a test bench to show that cars always vary in real horse power figures - and manufacturers were not amused ;-) Question is: What could you find underneath a very new car?
No doubt that this A8 brings the most innovative technology onboard. But the design is not that impressive. I mean the A7 came with impressive design and I think the A7’s is the best Audi design.
Markus Deep. I say the 2015 R8 was the most beautiful R8, the 2015 Q5 exterior design was much better than today’s Q5...and on and on I can go. I absolutely love the rear and interior design of this 2018 A8, but front looks boring.
Markus Deep Audi makes too much subtle designs, which is sort of a VW thing. I think they should’ve given the car more presence, just like mercedes does
+Markus Deep I totally agree. The A8 interior is beautifully styled & the advanced tech features are top notch, however the exterior is very bland & a little too conservative for a large premium luxury sedan.
Well, 3 screens in a car (2 touchable) which can be operated while driving but using a smartphone is charged with up to 200€ motoring fine, 2 points and a temporary driving ban. Not that I am against it, but there might be something wrong here.
Yeah I get where you're coming from. Those touch screens controls can be extremely distracting whilst driving but I guess common sense should be advised. I would set everything up before driving.
I like it quite a lot. I don’t think the tech is too much apart from the rear screen for the climate and seats that you can remove. I think they should probably have that fixed in place. But everything else is good. I think a touch screen for the climate is not the best solution but if they have voice control for it then I’d be happy with that as long as it works well. The safety and comfort features look really good. Hopefully that stuff trickles down to the rest of the cars most people can actually afford in the next few years. And that camera which views the car from behind is so cool. One more thing, make it an EV. But that goes without saying.
Excellent work Thomas. Funny comment regarding "massage" I'll see you 10 mins later" I appreciate the fact about "even the dealer cant fix everything..." Very true, too much tech is not good, just make a reliable car.
Autogefühl Yes. I have watched the whole video. You are the best car review chanel in the whole youtube, so i love your videos and im watching them whole :D I know, that on the beginning is showen the car in the night. But the lights are already on. I have meaned to show the cars welcome lightening when you unlock it in the night. And also when you lock it in the night. Same way like you are showing in the video how the indicators are working by locking and unlocking the car. And also the interior is on the video only from the back right seat. So what about showing it from drivers seat?
I would love to see what they will do with the new A6 I strongly believe they need to do the fundamental thing of simply changing up the front grille to a significantly new design, or the whole range will look almost identical to the point of being absurd!! Hopefully the will employ the 'shroud bonnet' grille style Jaguar and Mercedes are now using and to great success
Great car ,great tech, super quality interior, but looks like a giant smartphone inside, not majestic and luxurious as a top luxury car should, like Mercedes S-class is.Going full touchscreen inside is a mistake in my opinion ,should have left a few physical buttons inside because it's easier for the driver .The exterior design is a bit bland, should have been bolder . But super car anyway.Great review Thomas, keep it up!
Hi Thomas. Great review.. One question though.. At 42:50, u mentioned great noise insulation whereas, we cud hear a lot of road noise 42:00 to 42:30.. How come?
My take on assistance systems: I've already owned a couple of cars (Mazda and Audi) that feature them and I'm convinced they are not ready for the market yet. They will be great to have in maybe 10 years, but currently they are to be avoided. Not only can they be unpleasant in some situations, they can be a safety hazard.
Regarding the servicing of these cars. I recently bought a 2003 VW Phaeton 3.2 VR6. There's nothing seriously wrong with it but I would love to have an extended warranty along with reasonable servicing costs. This would have a number of positives for VW. The resale value of the car would increase as people would not be afraid to invest in luxury cars and then lose 2/3rds of their value after 3 years. This means more private purchases. It would get me visiting their showrooms on a regular basis and eyeing up new models, rather than some local garage. It would also give me confidence in the brand and instill brand loyalty. That I'm being taken care of.
Another great extended review Thomas, thumbs up :) I also saw in another review that the front wheels can be decoupled to increase the angle at which they can be turned, very interesting. Do the front speakers come out and retract when you start and shut the engine down? cheers !
Thomas, I couldn't find is it possible to move passenger seat from driver's position? Just like in Mercedes. With a physical button, not by using infotainment menu. Thank you
Great review as usual of a very interesting car, thank you. I'm not convinced by the exterior design however. I feel they could have done something a bit more interesting with the styling.
You said the upper media screen doesn't have the same "button style" response as the lower one, but I think you can change that in the settings because I'm pretty sure I've seen that feature in other youtubers' reviews
16:55 also wenn so komfortables sitzen in einer aktuellen oberklasse limousine aussieht dann ist das schon traurig. Die Beine viel zu stark abgewickelt keine Unterstützung der Oberschenkel usw....
I currently lease A8 short wheel base. Looking to lease a new A8 but too many features for me. I really don't need all of those features in technology. My current vehicle has the blind spot, park, stop and go.Those tech features are fine and don't any other. But I may be able to deal with the adaptive cruise control as in level 3 autonomous driving I may like that. Lane Departure, lane assist I can do without.
From outside this Audi looks so much like American VW Passat 2017. Of course Audi is much better. But Mercedes S is still number 1! . Very nice presentation Thomas 👍 And please do review of new Mazda 6 2018 when is available.
Funny. They call it a blind spot monitor, but you can always see the cars in the mirror. Well, at least it alerts you in case you're dozing off. Obviously, Thomas has his mirrors well positioned. 👍
Very good review, thank you Thomas! I like your idea that it is a dinosaur full of technologies) I think S class will continue to be the leader with the 7 series on the second position. In case of Audi with all its screens and technologies it feels like “sometimes enough means enough “. So many technology there, but it still doesn’t feel so luxury as you expect it. Plus the previous generation had a much better exterior, especially the front of the car.
I know they work with a system. It is gradually increasing horse power. What I mean that there is no logic in the system at all considering the numbers. So there is no reference for 55 with the real horse power figure. It is randomly set in a "stairs schematic". It's like "hm, lets call all vehicles from 100 to 200 hp 33 and all vehicles from 200 to 400 hp 55" - something like that.
The numbers are calculated from the 0-100kph time not the engine output. The final velocity of 100kph acceleration expressed in meters per second and then that figure divided by the 0-100kph in seconds, this total then divided by 9.81 (1G in M/S) then this figure will be between 0 an 1 and we assuming that 1G equals 1 in this calculation so the dynamic badging indicates what acceleration the car can achieve as a percentage of 1G. We've had this badging system for some years here in the Middle East, the usually round it up to the nearest 5. Although for whatever reason in this example with the new A8 the calculation is off, it should be 50TFSi as it is with the old gen A8. 100kph in M/S (27.78) divided by the 0-100kph time of 5.7 seconds divided by 1G in M/S (9.81) = 0.4969 so it should have a 50TFSI badge on it. Unless they've scrapped this system for the new A8, this is how it works on all the other models in the Middle East except for the S, RS and R8 model.
Oh wow, interesting! They explained it to me with a table that they set different hp ranges for different numbers and that they would not correlate in a number scale. Whatever, I think the old scheme like 3.0 TFSI was more clear as it at least showed the correct displacement.
I figured it out, they base the badge on the LWB on the same calculation as above but using the acceleration times/force from the SWB model which is slightly quicker at 5.6 seconds so the result of the calculation is .5057 so rounded up to the nearest 5 it becomes 55TFSI badging. Yes I much prefer having the regular system of having the badge correlate to the engine size or my personal preference just remove the badge entirely for the clean look. Having to explain what the badges mean to every person who comes to the showroom messes with my brain after a while.
hmm but the 33 engines dont have 3,3 seconds acceleration? Pretty confusing =) BMW and Mercedes arent logical either anyway. They used to be, but no more. So I was happy that Audi did have some sense, but they wanted to have comparable numbers for the cars, so that you know that a 55 is same power in the A8 and also in a n A6 for example. Not sure what should the customer benefit be for that...
Target market for this car is for the specific ppl; which prefer something unique for example buying an old dinosaur with some future gadget in it. An A8 4th gen, I believe its a total refinement from the first gen and if I am not mistaken the next loop will be at the fifth gen A8.
Hi Thomas, I feel that going too much digitalized has some how ruined the identity of the dashboard. The new Range Rovers have gone digital while maintaining some design identity in the dashboard, so is the S-class coupe. what do you think?
for an autobahn cruiser, this is hard to beat. mercedes s class also punches in this arena, as does bmw 7 series. lexus ls460 also competes here but perhaps doesnt get the respect that it deserves. its a solid offering but is it worthy of taking on an s class?, perhaps not i think. i havnt been in the a8, but i have been in the s class, 7 series and lexus extensively. if i were stumping up the cash it would be between a8 and s class. the a8 looks good in this video but s class is just something else, it feels special when you are inside. so i'd take s class, with the full banana tyre shredding amg spec v8.
While i love audi pushing for technology, i'm dissapointed that they went to touch screens, i at least would like a controller knob, i feel like i could get easily distracted with those screens when i drive, and it would be super hard to find certain functions without looking to close, why would they change something so good to this, also audi needs to rethink their current designs more

A8 documentary from Thomas and Autogefühl. I really like this car and review
cheers mehmet!
Maybe the documentary it's a bit lengthy, but for sure it's the best review so far I've seen on the Audi A8!

Some people already to test cars on a test bench to show that cars always vary in real horse power figures - and manufacturers were not amused ;-)
Question is: What could you find underneath a very new car?
Check out the channel SavageGeese to get an idea.
I think they should’ve given the car more presence, just like mercedes does
Yes, this is too subtle for someone wanting to make a statement. For pure driven comfort it's probably great it's just not a "look at me" car.
It's level 5 autonomy driving? No? Even level 3 itsn't capable. So you my dear follower are wrong about innovative technology.
+Markus Deep
I totally agree.
The law states (at least in the uk) that if the device can be operated without holding it. It is legal. I think
Greetings. I am looking at buying another Audi for very long trips. Currently narrowed down to A8 or Q8. Any recommendations?
Good job you've done.
Thanks a lot.
thanks as always!
Is there gonna be a review for the New BMW M760Li/M760i? Great review!
7 Series review is linked in the video description!
+Sun Lee 👌
amazing , loved
@8.25: I think the length must be 5m17 and 5m30 instead of 4m17 and 4m30.
Oh yeah of course, sorry. It's of course 5 metres, had the right one in my mind but spoken out loud failed =)
Perfect rewiew! But maybe you could show the car also in the night. Mainly the organic LED back lights.
Thanks! Erm, did you really watch the video? Maybe just re-start at the beginning ;-)
I would love to see what they will do with the new A6
I strongly believe they need to do the fundamental thing of simply changing up the front grille to a significantly new design, or the whole range will look almost identical to the point of being absurd!! Hopefully the will employ the 'shroud bonnet' grille style Jaguar and Mercedes are now using and to great success
1:05:55 I saw this on Matt Watson's review, do you think this is a good idea? wont it just sets a leverage that might flip the car from side impact?
It's good
Great car ,great tech, super quality interior, but looks like a giant smartphone inside, not majestic and luxurious as a top luxury car should, like Mercedes S-class is.Going full touchscreen inside is a mistake in my opinion ,should have left a few physical buttons inside because it's easier for the driver .The exterior design is a bit bland, should have been bolder . But super car anyway.Great review Thomas, keep it up!
thanks greg!!
Hi Thomas. Great review.. One question though..
At 42:50, u mentioned great noise insulation whereas, we cud hear a lot of road noise 42:00 to 42:30..
How come?
cheers!
That always depends on the road surface. Some roads have louder feedback.
I dont like the idea of selfdriving cars, and not sure why we need them, but I love this car.
I dont think the interior will date all that well. It looks good now but I don't think it screams luxury like an S class.
Its beautiful, people need to stop hating!
Another great extended review Thomas, thumbs up :)
I also saw in another review that the front wheels can be decoupled to increase the angle at which they can be turned, very interesting.
Do the front speakers come out and retract when you start and shut the engine down?
cheers !
cheers! Afaik that coming out speaker function is not present anymore. I know what u mean, I found it very cool with the last generation
Worthy of being in a Transporter Movie?
W12 🤓
Boss had an A8 ten years ago and felt like a couch on wheels compared to my A2
Thomas, I couldn't find is it possible to move passenger seat from driver's position? Just like in Mercedes. With a physical button, not by using infotainment menu.
Thank you
Great review as usual of a very interesting car, thank you. I'm not convinced by the exterior design however. I feel they could have done something a bit more interesting with the styling.
+rennied2 you're welcome. Stick to us :)
Review the Lexus LS 500 executive package!
see the review links in the video description
I was thinking more of a full test drive review.
Autogefühl i am a land rover fan
51:15 blind spot monitoring detecting car so far behind, how does this work?
+wordpress good sensor/radar
Very nice anti curb rash feature @ 22.25👍
In the headlight assembly there appears to be a blue component. Could you please tell me what this is? It looks quite unusual and out of place.
can we get 3 spoke steering wheel like a7 Sportback?
Love the new Audi! Sunroof?
German engineering!!! Perfect!
You said the upper media screen doesn't have the same "button style" response as the lower one, but I think you can change that in the settings because I'm pretty sure I've seen that feature in other youtubers' reviews
it occured to me later as well that it also has some functions of those in the lower part
Yes I thought you would, but didn't want to wait till the end of the video to find out. Great review as always anyway :)
cheers!
16:55 also wenn so komfortables sitzen in einer aktuellen oberklasse limousine aussieht dann ist das schon traurig. Die Beine viel zu stark abgewickelt keine Unterstützung der Oberschenkel usw....
It sounds like the connection for the iPhone doesn’t work properly. I used to have the same issue with my Panamera.
+European 1 will do!
Funny.
They call it a blind spot monitor, but you can always see the cars in the mirror.
Well, at least it alerts you in case you're dozing off.
Obviously, Thomas has his mirrors well positioned. 👍
=)
Very good review, thank you Thomas! I like your idea that it is a dinosaur full of technologies) I think S class will continue to be the leader with the 7 series on the second position. In case of Audi with all its screens and technologies it feels like “sometimes enough means enough “. So many technology there, but it still doesn’t feel so luxury as you expect it. Plus the previous generation had a much better exterior, especially the front of the car.
thanks m8 !
i must say, that suit is awesome! =)
=)
There is a system to the badging is based off of the cars acceleration force. Check 'Dynamic Badging' on the Audi Media Services page.
Pretty confusing =)
BMW and Mercedes arent logical either anyway.
54:00 wow, it sounds amazing =0
the steering wheel in a highway scenario is only for legal purposes :DD there is no phisical conection between the wheels and the steering
Burmester 3d sound or bang and olufsen ?
Hi Thomas, I feel that going too much digitalized has some how ruined the identity of the dashboard. The new Range Rovers have gone digital while maintaining some design identity in the dashboard, so is the S-class coupe. what do you think?
yeah I also see over-designing
for an autobahn cruiser, this is hard to beat. mercedes s class also punches in this arena, as does bmw 7 series. lexus ls460 also competes here but perhaps doesnt get the respect that it deserves. its a solid offering but is it worthy of taking on an s class?, perhaps not i think. i havnt been in the a8, but i have been in the s class, 7 series and lexus extensively. if i were stumping up the cash it would be between a8 and s class. the a8 looks good in this video but s class is just something else, it feels special when you are inside. so i'd take s class, with the full banana tyre shredding amg spec v8.
amazing 😍
While i love audi pushing for technology, i'm dissapointed that they went to touch screens, i at least would like a controller knob, i feel like i could get easily distracted with those screens when i drive, and it would be super hard to find certain functions without looking to close, why would they change something so good to this, also audi needs to rethink their current designs more
very good review. how does it compare with s class and 7 series?
see video description for reviews to those
You should have asked the AI suspension engineer how it is different or better than Mercedes ABC system which has a 20 years advantage.
