This show is incredible. Absolutely INCREDIBLE. It’s very episodic in season 1 but season 2 goes SO HARD. There’s BLOOD, in this cotton candy pastel magical girl ballet anime. BLOOOOOODDDD! ITS ACTUALLY INSANE
The correct answer is yes. 🦊✨ I say this as someone who thought Princess Tutu kinda dragged for the first several episodes but the payoff was very much worth it. Good conclusion to a decent show. With older media, it's much harder to do the three episode analysis because during that era of media, you'd get a proper payoff to any sort of setup. Sadly, that's rarely is the case now, so the three episode analysis has become a staple for modern media. I'd love to see you continue with Princess Tutu and finish watching it and see a post-analysis video from you! 🦊👍✨
It's also lovely how compact the cast is. You have Duck, Myuto, Fakir, Rue, and Drosselmeyer and that's about it for the important characters. Means there's space for the overarching plot to interface with the character dynamics without everything getting so crowded.
I remember watching this RELIGIOUSLY when I was in kindergarten. I love the craziness of the show and how everyone but duck seems to see the menagerie of this story town as normal. It’s a great root for some pretty funny humor. Also, I love how cute the art style is contrasted with the extremely dark plot, especially later on.
if you like animes with cute art styles but darker themes I would absolutely suggest watching Kiaba. It’s honestly kinda similar with its themes too now that I’m thinking about it. My profile picture is actually one of the characters
I'm glad you enjoyed your dip into it! Twilight showed me this probably about a year ago at this rate. One thing you can expect from Princess Tutu; you will not be able to expect anything from Princess Tutu. This show is _wild_ and it will go all over the place in the best of ways. I hope you give us your thoughts when you finally finish it!
The show may be a slow start but God is it worth it. The use of ballet to tell the narrative is so fascinating and the story itself is just so beautifully crafted it leaves so much to think about. I would love for you to continue watching it til the end to hear your complete thoughts on everything.
Princess Tutu is SO good! It is such a classic in the Magical Girl genre, but sets itself apart by avoiding a lot of tropes and story beats you usually see. The fairytale theming is also peak.
I remember enjoying this up to the end. It's basically an earlier kind of dark maho shoujo. but unlike series like Madoka, they don't do soft gore or violence. It's weird, but in a fun way.
Yesssss ✨ It's one of those shows that just keeps ramping up the twists and the finale means I can't listen to certain pieces by Tchaikovsky without tearing up over a duck.
Wow, I think this show might be right up my alley. I discovered a show on youtube called Flowering Heart with a similar premise. Children transforming into magical girls to help lift other people out of despair. Sadly, it was canceled before it could finish. Thanks for doing this, Critter.
I really hope we get to hear your thoughts on the rest of the show, especially your thoughts on what’s really going on. Love how they play with the story book idea. Would love to gush more about exactly what I liked but I don’t want to spoil things
My friend who has a bg in classical music made me watch this bc they thought I'd appreciate the music and i do, but it's SO MUCH MORE! The style, the care with which they animate the dancing and emphasize the weight and beats of the movement, the Drama and the eternal love and passion ahiru has as a character, the way every main characters' storyline evolves until it comes together...i was floored. It does start off a little slow, and the dub sounds like it doesn't do any favors to the show (ahiru in the japanese version is so stinking cute and adorable), but it's so worth a watch if you want a magical girl anime that's not your usual. Please give it a chance
Drosselmeyers design is cooler than...whoever that was. Also, one of my favorite animes ever. I remember making fun of the title and trying to watch it with my sis as a joke assuming it was a bad kids show. We were very, very wrong. We totally cried at the end.
Honestly, I've heard so much about Princess Tutu about how great it is and I wanted to check it out... But I never did since the art was beautiful but most things I've heard about it never mentioned the story much so I wasn't to interested. But this video made me really want to watch and I have a couple of hours, so why the heck not! Time to binge!
Its ballet the anime. It is hard to explain the story, since you can see just from the video how crazy things get. If you have even a slight interest in ballet or like old timey storybooks, or what not, it is completely worth it. It takes the theme and runs with it and it is amazing.
I think one of the strongest things about PTT was it’s story, themes, and the nuance of its characters. It really sets off with the basic concept of “restoring the prince’s true self” with a main cast who all seems to actively forget, go against, or avoid their own “true selves”-said Prince included. The first half introduces the characters and makes sure the audience gets a good grasp on them and their traditional roles in the story (the selfless prince, the pure hearted heroine, the fated for death antihero knight, and the villainess crow who can never be loved), only to completely flip those around and expand on them in the second half. A good majority of fans felt the ending was dissatisfying or bittersweet, but I loved it as it was a perfect conclusion to a fairytale about people who tried everything they could to reject themselves.
I would legit put Princess Tutu in my top ten anime of all time. When it came out, it definitely was. Twenty years later I am not as sure it would still be in the top 10 if I made a complete list of every anime I ever watched but it would definitely be a contender. I would certainly call it a classic. It is weird and crazy, but in a way that makes perfect sense for the theme.
Highly recommend. Especially if you love the classical movie and arts. It may start a little slow, but what it builds up to is incredibly good. It's really worth it. I will say at least this, without giving anything away because it's so worth going into this without spoilers, but I'd have loved a little more to have been done with the lead character and secondary male character, but with what we had, it was just beautiful. :) That would be my only thing, which is only just a nitpick honestly.
one more thing is that almost all the episodes are named after famous ballets and orchestras that usually relate to the plot of the episode! the the whole idea of duck is based on swan lake.
I hope we get another video of you reviewing the show ones you finished it! Maybe in the same style as this, with your thoughts on each episode? (Listen, I'm starved for Princess Tutu content xD No one has any reaction videos on it, besides the one chanel who's reaction I alredy watched, and another chanel with poor quality. I alredy watched all the review and essay videos I could find! Please have it in you to fed this starving fandom T.T ) This show is soooo good, and so criminaly underrated!
There are so many jokes here that I love in a review. The dun-dun-duuuuns and the small tidbits on your opinions on the characters. Duck is a fun and relatable and Myoto being made of paper mache cracked me up.
Princess Tutu was one of my first animes and I remember being so hooked on it that I finished it in just a couple days! It’s cute and has an interesting concept but concludes as a deep and grand story. Definitely a must watch to the end.
Late comment but glad you liked it! I also watched this later, around 2009-2011 or so when I was already an adult, and what always struck for me about this anime was the freshness of it. It felt different from things like Cardcaptor Sakura and Ojamajo Doremi, which I'd watched before, or anime which were popular then like Madoka. It came out in 2002, so I'm sure why it's called a classic now, is how different it is from many of the magical girl anime before and after, and people have a different perspective on it now. I often hear how people are sorta blindsided by the title, because of how girly/silly it sounds I guess? But it's a good short title and I've somewhat felt it's good how it tricks people into lowering their expectations.... as someone who grew up with both ballet/opera as well as rock and metal music, this show is like.... the hard rock of magical girl anime. lol idk how else to describe it, it's just something very comforting for me, but also, without spoilers.... it goes hard with its themes. Very satisfying ending. Hope you continued watching it! There's definitely payoffs to all those things you've noticed this far :D :D
This is one of those shows I've been meaning to watch for like over a decade now XD. Really should try to get it off my list. Definitely want to watch h it more now. The girl you think might be the raven for some reason makes me think of Raven from RWBY. Would love it if the prince was the bad guy and losing his heart was punishment or some way of sealing him. That's why the " friends" treat him so poorly. Loved all those red text inserts you did. Made me laugh every time
Okay, so, two things. I am WEEPING with laughter just watching your reactions to these first three episodes. Seriously, it IS a fever dream, I get it, but the second thing is that I am so unbelievably delighted that you're going to stick with it and watch the rest. Princess Tutu is tied for my top favorite anime EVER. The story is rich and takes interesting turns, and the characters have wonderful growth. Fakir does start out as a complete bastard, there's no bones about that, but his character arc is magnificent and he becomes my favorite character of the entire show. One of my favorite characters of all time, in fact. GOD, I hope you love it and keep going to the end!!
I remember watching this and SGT. Frog when I was like 8 on Netflix. This show definitely won a place in my heart. Ive been meaning to rewatch the show but I’ve always ended up postponing it or just forgetting to get around to it. I’ll get around to it now thanks to you.
Princess Tutu tends to misdirect you and continues to trick you if you don't pay attention. Its like a musical, more specifically like Into The Woods or more accurately a play in the same way that Revolutionary Girl Utena is a play but its less sexual misconduct. God I wish I could go into all of my thoughts man I could make an ESSAY plus tax
princess tutu is indeed like a fever dream. i remember first watching it after getting interested by an amv (this was so long ago. danse de raven by chickboom studios) the absurdity of the characters and just... unhinged direction of the story sometimes, had me stopping after most episodes to process what i had just watched XD
Me watching the show for the first time... Where is this going? Me at the end of the show... Germany the show went to Germany and clearly read the original versions of the faerie tales instead of the watered-down Disney stuff.
Watched Princess Tutu last year, best decision of my life if I'm completely honest! Not sure if it'll be the same for you but this is the first magical girl anime that felt any close to what Madoka Magica made me feel. It's a good anime,a classic for a reason, totally worth it.
My only history with this show is a single AMV from 16 years ago (Side note, I felt my life slipping away looking up how old it is at this point -_-) that I saved as one of my favorites from the early days of UA-cam. It was always one of those shows from the AMVs where I was like "yeah, looks cool, I should watch it some time." Then I forgot about it for ten years XD When you mentioned you were starting Magical Girl May with it, I was like "oh, wow, cool. I guess I'll find out Critter's thoughts, and if it sounds good I'll finally give it a shot." Welp, you've convinced me. I don't know if it's going to be more or less of a head-fk than Gundam: Witch from Mercury, but I need a break from that show anyway, so time to finally watch Princess Tutu! Thanks got the great review, amazing and hilarious video as always! Can't wait for the next one!
I think only watching the first 3 episodes of Princess Tutu is a huge mistake, given the reason it's one of the greatest anime in history is the way it retroactively makes the entire series great with its second act :P It's kind of like only watching Bojack Horseman for 3 episodes.
This is one of my favorite shows. I first watched it a long time ago, and recently watched it with my partner, who ended up polishing it off in 2 days. The main joke the fans give towards this show, especially pre brony era, is that it is the manliest show for little girls.
Also Fakir is one my favorite characters in the whole series. You will either love or hate Uzura, just gonna put that one out there. There is no in between.
The unique premise got me to watch it years ago, and I was lucky to have bought the complete series under 30 bucks on EBay nearly at the same time I discovered the show. Yes, I bought something off of EBay based on a hunch, but it was a worthy purchase.
DCHSVEHX YES!! It's my favorite and absolutely love all of these characters. I was introduced by my cousin who also loved it but instantly regrets based on an unhealthy amount of times I've rewatched this AND to answer your question about the Raven I wouldn't say you're right but nor can I say you're wrong since you've been on point (pun intended) about the plot of the story lol
I've never seen this before but you got me hooked on it but yeah you bring up some really good theories and points you have this is what I like is when you guys break something down bit by bit to explain why it's so good or bad depending on what it is
This show is my absolute favorite, I watch it every Christmas and even after 10 viewings the last two episodes make me cry. It's incredible how well it adapts the motifs and effects of ballet into a totally new medium. Honestly an absolute underdog of anime and I wish more people gave it a shot because just like the heroine it is not what it seems on the surface. Total side note but I actually dropped RWBY v9 simply because Luci Christian, the voice of Duck, also voices the mouse in a similar voice and I can't let rwby tarnish Tutu for me lol
oh! something I thought was cool was that from what I know, the reason Mr. Cat tries to marry the girls and stuff is because he's based on all the fairytales where an animal makes a young girl their bride and I think thats just... kind of grown on me hilarious???? I don't know why, like the idea that these guys went "shit man, theres A LOT of stories of weird forest creatures taking young girls as brides... we can't like not have these stories coz they're classics... hmm... what about a side character?"
If you're going to keep watching Princess Tutu, you have to watch the Hold Me Now AMV. Spoiler warning for the rest of series though but highly recommend.
What I hardly like about that was that Ahiru/Duck gave away the pendant and stopped changing forms before the final episode and remain the duck she was born as. At least I knew a fan-made sequel and had to wait for years for the whole episodes of that to complete then I would know whether to fully like or partly like.
That happened to me lol It was great but somewhere along the way I didn't know what was going on anymore I don't think it was the shows fault tho I think I missed alot of the subtle details/deeper story which added up as it went on
@@heyyou9903 I was expecting it to be a normal magical girl show, the first season was that but season 2 started that way then vered in a direction I didn't expect and wow that ending amazing but sad 😞
This show was amazing to me. Definitely a slow start because it tries to set up how you think the story will go but then improves in my opinion. I liked the ending but i wish a little thing would be different but thats just my opinion and even though it didnt have what i wanted it was still great. Honestly this vid is making me want to rewatch the show simply because with the new mindset i have with shows it'll probably make me appreciate it more. Also the fact that i like the dub more than the sub is really nice too, i feel like the actors did really good. Also also, critter likes it when the show keeps the fairy tale aesthetic and i think they really keep it throughout the whole show
I loved this anime in middle school.... Only thing is I hated the ending😂 I wanted Fakir and Duck to be together and was so pissed when she stayed a duck.
I will say the show gets a lot better as the series goes on please stick with it, it’s my comfort show.
"There's no fight to the death.."
Wait til season two.

You're right, but this is Edel erasure

Me before they showed the anteater girl: I might check this out.
Me after they showed the anteater girl: I'm definitely checking this out.

Ah yes, the childhood anime that sadly awaken my love for "brooding" or "serious" male character. 😂
0:40 That movie is Bring It On: All or Nothing. Fitting since Princess Tutu is about dance.
"I'm not sure if this is metaphorical or literal"
Yes!
Hearing you refer to the big evil looking guy as discount Cackletta made me laugh way harder than it should have xD
Oh. Oh Mytho becomes Steve in between Duck and Fakir. It's glorious.
Highly recommend. Especially if you love the classical movie and arts. It may start a little slow, but what it builds up to is incredibly good. It's really worth it.

This show is soooo good, and so criminaly underrated!
That merch plug was pretty good, ngl. XD
I always love this channel, but something about magical girl may really makes me genuinely happy.
Princess Tutu is a weird, but fun and heartwarming ride. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
There are so many jokes here that I love in a review. The dun-dun-duuuuns and the small tidbits on your opinions on the characters.
Duck is a fun and relatable and Myoto being made of paper mache cracked me up.

awww princess tutù my first ever magical girl show
"IT can't JUST be his character"
*nervous laughter*
Princess Tutu is one of my favorite animes! I remember watching it while I was in ballet and I wanted to be like Ahiru.
aaah, princess tutu my beloved, one of the first anime i'd ever seen and watched 1 thousand times, truly it has my entire heart forever
Made me laugh every time
I'd love to hear your take on Princess Tutu in its entirety tbh Happy to have more Magical Girl discussion videos!
This anime is a classic. Another good classic is Revolutionary Girl Utena
You're so right and so wrong about Rue in the most interesting way and I really want to find out your reaction to the reveal
I watched this show when I was younger and I remember the story being really good so I hope you stick with it and watch the rest of it
I really hope that you'll review how you felt about the whole show and all the twist it and turns it brings you down

This is one of those anime’s that kicks off in the second half the story really hits
Its cool to see you reaching out to other magical girl media in your content!
I remember watching this and SGT. Frog when I was like 8 on Netflix. This show definitely won a place in my heart. Ive been meaning to rewatch the show but I’ve always ended up postponing it or just forgetting to get around to it. I’ll get around to it now thanks to you.
This show is surprisingly chill for being in the magical girl genre.
Princess Tutu tends to misdirect you and continues to trick you if you don't pay attention. as a german girl, I really apreciate this hilarious comment xD
You should do a video for magical girl may about Fushigiboshi no futagohime! Its a really fun magical girl anime!
Princess Tutu is one of the great cult classics and I would love to see a full review/analysis.
Watched Princess Tutu last year, best decision of my life if I'm completely honest! Not sure if it'll be the same for you but this is the first magical girl anime that felt any close to what Madoka Magica made me feel.
It's a good anime,a classic for a reason,totally worth it.

Thanks got the great review, amazing and hilarious video as always! Can't wait for the next one!
i kinda wish they either make a remake or add more details about the ending because it was so good
I think only watching the first 3 episodes of Princess Tutu is a huge mistake, given the reason it's one of the greatest anime in history is the way it retroactively makes the entire series great with its second act :P It's kind of like only watching Bojack Horseman for 3 episodes.
It is one of the classic anime series and they're great to watch.
Oh Princess Tutu gets better later on, trust me
Flip Flappers is def a Magical Girl show you need to watch. Highly underrated.
I think this was a first anime I ever watched and it’s stuck with me for forever

7:57 so so accurate, shadow the hedgehog flavored ballerina
I’d love to see a follow up video for this!!
Ah, it is that time of year again. I wonder what will come next!
i've been meaning to watch this show for a long time, this video convinced me to finally commit. Binged it and absolutely loved it 💖
I saw this anime and I was instantly hooked on the story, plots, and what would happen next.

I've never seen this before but you got me hooked on it but yeah you bring up some really good theories and points you have this is what I like is when you guys break something down bit by bit to explain why it's so good or bad depending on what it is
When I got to the end of the series, I got so sad, just because it was over.
PLEASE update us on your thoughts when you've finished it.
Is it just me, or why are the old animes so much better then the new ones?
Where did you watch this, i would like to know. To watch myself.
I watched it on Amazon Prime video!
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 😮 really great, i’m currently sharing it with my big sis.
Please keep watching Princess Tutu!!! It was my first and all time favorite anime!
oh! something I thought was cool was that from what I know, the reason Mr. Cat tries to marry the girls and stuff is because he's based on all the fairytales where an animal makes a young girl their bride and I think thats just... kind of grown on me hilarious????
I don't know why, like the idea that these guys went "shit man, theres A LOT of stories of weird forest creatures taking young girls as brides... we can't like not have these stories coz they're classics... hmm... what about a side character?"
maybe finish it and do a whole review? Lemme know how you feel about the ending! I was kinna mixed on it but lemme know what you think
Is it worth watching? Yes absolutely!
What is it with May and theme months your magical girl may 4th Snakes Mortal May Event Comics Month from Linkara is there a quota?
*reads title* Yes it is.
Princess tutu is amazing. My absolute favorite anime.
will you be watching mahou shoujo lyrical nanoha?
Fair warning if you stick with this season 2 will take you down though what the hell just happened hole
That happened to me lol
It was great but somewhere along the way I didn't know what was going on anymore I don't think it was the shows fault tho
I think I missed alot of the subtle details/deeper story which added up as it went on
@@heyyou9903 I was expecting it to be a normal magical girl show, the first season was that but season 2 started that way then vered in a direction I didn't expect and wow that ending amazing but sad 😞
Also also, critter likes it when the show keeps the fairy tale aesthetic and i think they really keep it throughout the whole show
Yes it's an amazing anime!!! So underrated it's criminal.
I say yes keep watching since it will be worth it later. also reading the manga wld also be interesting too.
I want to know what you think after you have watched the whole season, because things happen that you dont expect
Yes.
i love ur reaction to this anime
How does it end i never got to finish
I loved this anime in middle school.... Only thing is I hated the ending😂 I wanted Fakir and Duck to be together and was so pissed when she stayed a duck.
Technically he could maybe use his power to turn her into an human
Once you finish the anime, watch Tutuon Abridgers abridged version, they make Mytho even funnier
Second part of the show is good i think
The fucking SpongeBob movie clip😆 I love this, and wow the show has me as shocked as you tbh
Why didn't you make a DuckTales reference at the end?
I didn't watch Duck Tales, so it didn't cross my mind.
