They get a shitload of money from selling their products and ads, compared to RBL which was basically invented and almost solely financed by Red Bull. The only reason you idiots hate Bayern Munich is because your clubs never manage to compete against them. Myths like a "Bayern bonus" have long been busted so do yourself a favor and stop making a fool out of yourself.

@@danii5630 Bayern buying dead other teams may have been true 10-15 years ago. Look at the stats, Dortmund have surpassed Bayern in investing in other Bundeliga teams years ago. Also do you know that Bayern has already saved multiple other german clubs from bankruptcy, including their city rival 1860 München??
But Schalke didn't lose Özil to a bigger club. They just thought he wouldn't be good enough, so he went to Bremen - not really a bigger club.

No, and also to the other user, no Bremen wasn't bigger. Fans, Managers and Coaches all were sure that Özil was the biggest talent back to that time and they've all wanted him to stay. But not at any costs. Back in that time Özil's father was his agent and after his son's debut he got greedy as fuck. Özil himself got a little bit pissed that Rakitic got the no.10 shirt and not him and his father started demanding a huge salary and bonuses. Both parties end in huge dispute and they couldn't agree on a new contract. Schalke wanted at least some money and Bremen came around with an acceptable offer (to that time 5m were a lot for a talent that just played ~30 games and only had 6 months of contract left). Bremen wasn't a really big club anymore but they've still played international for years and could guarantee Özil enough playing time (as he still was a very young talent). In Bremen and at Real he still had many problems with his father being his manager and they ended up in a huge fight. Özil himself still loves Schalke as his favorite club and admitted that it was a huge mistake leaving the club, it all tunred out good for him, but he admitted that he had luck in finding a good club with Bremen and that it was his father's greed that 'forced' him to leave.

Oh yes, all leagues and please stand up for the ffp rule equally. English clubs dont't have 50+1 but what really messes things up is ignoring and sneaking around the ffp. Many teams (with less money) get banned from international tournaments every year, or are forced to sell all their best players (Roma) because they spend more money than they generate but ManCity (and Paris SG) are just doing what they want because they threat to suit the uefa to death... there's a really good explanation about that by the tifo football channel

Football was always a sport for the masses, just look at england with mk dons. Much tradition etc. Or look at france, with psg the title is basically set before the ball is even touched.
50+1 hands the power to the club, which results in less high money, which is spend between clubs (like 222mio € for neymar). And if the owner loses his interested, the club is milked to the last drop and will find itself a few leauges below without money and if they are smart, without fans.
Its not about tieing down to something, its more like, you take away crystal meth from junkies, so they can get in life.
And this is exactly why the Bundesliga is the best league. I’m not biased. At all.
That 50+1 rule is looking especially attractive today...

@D HJ Karl Heinz Rumenigge wants to abolish it, which suggests that Bayern would benefit from it as well. They would attract more money than their rivals as they're also in the richest part of the country.

As an English Bundesliga fan the 50+1 rule was what got me interested in the Bundesliga
Alex Purvis it’s the same here in Sweden. My team Malmö FF has despite this reached the europa and champions league and we even won our europa league group last year. We’ve knocked out red bull Salzburg twice in the qualifying rounds which as a 51% rule team is a huge achievement

That rule may be a good idea, but we still got several clubs like Wolfsburg, Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen for which there are exceptions.

In Romania private investors have ruined the biggest clubs, including the '86 Champions League winners Steaua Bucharest, that is now playing in the 4th division. Football is a passion, not a business!

Yes, because nothing says "sport" and "fun" like Bayern Munich winning the title every single season. The 50+1 rule is a scam designed to appeal to a sense of virtue and purism, but with the secret aim of maintaining the status quo of Bayern as eternal champions. Smart people like the Germans shouldn't fall for it... much less tolerate it.

@@samsofield3059 I don't regard the club as an end in itself; winning trophies is the true end, so if a club only exists to give its fans something to follow, that's not sport; it's a social life, a substitute for enjoying sporting success. It's like my club (Everton) and their tripe about "Everton in the Community" which is a feel-good diversion from the fact that the team is and has been useless for decades.
50+1 is designed to tap into the idea that being a fan is the reason why a club exists and that fans can congratulate themselves for sticking by their team regardless of how bad the team is, whereas I take the view that winning trophies is why a club should exist. And there is no bigger barrier in Germany to any club (Bayern aside) winning major honours than the hateful 50+1 rule.
Sure, support your team (as I do) even when they are hopeless (as mine is), but don't be manipulated into being taken for granted by the club or conned into thinking that fandom is the highest end for following your team. Winning trophies is where the joy is.

Everyone seems to point out the last 6 seasons, but don't we all know the 50+1 rule was also around when Bayern wasn't winning every title??
Other leagues may have given in to greed and money, but that's no reason for the Bundesliga to follow. Bayern isn't dominating the league solely because of the 50+1 rule. Lets look at seasons 98 - 2009: 6 different Bundesliga champions during this time VS 3 different champions in the EPL. (Dortmund also won again 2 more times after this)
Bayern have become a much better side with a way deeper squad than almost every other team in Europe, so they can compete in 3 different competitions without losing consistency - this is why they've consistently won the Bundesliga for 6 seasons straight and attract the best players as a result. - & a lot of this is down to the increased investment in youth systems in Germany starting in the early 2000's. Bayern's youth system produces players better than most.
If the 50+1 rule is abolished, Bundesliga will turn into most other leagues: Only teams with rich foreign owners can win, nobody cares about local players and their development (or the club or fans), the national team suffers as a result, and even the club teams aren't as consistent since they keep buying and selling several players every season. - Sure this season wasn't the greatest for Bundesliga in CL, but look at every other season for the past 6 -7 years: The Bundesliga has done very well in Europe (During this same time that Bayern has been dominating this "noncompetitive" league).
Great comment! I agree that Bayern aren't dominating becuase of 50+1, but aboloshing it could help to even things up a little. It might be a tad harsh on Bayern though, who have earned their dominance through sound decision making and giving youth team players a chance, as you've said. But you make an excellent point about the Bundesliga being different from other leagues and personally I think that's a great thing...Thanks for your insightful comment.
Ed McCambridge - thanks! I 100% agree with your comment as well. Abolishing it would even things up faster, but I think it's better to let it happen naturally over time and keep the Bundesliga the way it's meant to be!

Latest Player from Bayerns youth academy was Thomas Müller. Many talented players from Bayern Youth Academy Play for other Clubs in Germany or never started a career as Professional footballplayer

Before that they tried to get into some other clubs (St. Pauli, 1860 Munich and Fortuna Düsseldorf) but that failed due to fan and club protest

I’ve only recently gotten into football and it’s things like this that I find fascinating. I also like the promotion and relegation system which would never fly in sports leagues here in the US. I appreciate how the fans are a part of the organization and not just end users for billionaires to suck dry. Plus you’ve got clubs like Union Berlin fans literally bleeding for their team.

Mesut Özil was a youth player at Schalke who hasn´t made many minutes for the first team. So Werder bought him were he had the oppertunity to make the breakthrought. Werder will never have enough money to outbid a Bundesliga club, unless it is a second division club.

Leipzig haven't exactly gone out and spent hundreds of millions like a PSG or a Man City. In fact if you factor in the sales of guys like Naby Keita, Oliver Burke, Bruma etc then they haven't really spent all that much. they've been quite suave in the transfer market identifying young players for the future at low prices. They also use their feeder clubs well. Tyler Adams has come in from New York Red Bulls and they've brought in some really good players from Salzburg. Even Bernardo began his career at Red Bull Brazil, then moved on to Salzburg then Leipzeg. They're by far the most equipped team to topple Bayern and they will probably do it spending a fraction of what Bayern do.

That is one of the reasons why we hate RB. This feeder team bullshit. Good talent comes up in the US, Austria, Brazil etc and the "main" club Leipzig just comes around and picks a player up for €2M when any other club would have to pay at least €10M.
Even RB Salzburg hates RB Leipzig because they can just take away their best players for basically nothing since the money stays in the RB Ecosystem and just gets reinvested into Leipzig.

Should be 50% +1...... also check out the Brazilian league where pretty much all teams are owned by the fans.
And obviously no corruption ever takes place in Brazilian football.
Most Brazilian teams are actually part of a sports club setup with multiple sports teams competing in different sports including football and are also social clubs where members hang out and hold dances etc. It's more of a community than just a football club.

Scrapping the 50+1 rule is not the way to stop clubs from losing their best players to better paying ones. Fairer system of sharing the TV money and capping the professional footballers earnings worldwide is.
The rule should stay... maybe tweaked a little... but I don't want our football culture ruined by foreign investors... Plus at least Leipzig doesnt just throw their money around and buys star after star... they have a great youth development system and a good eye for talent.

@David Clinging no that's not the same. If the club is controlled by the fans rather than investors with no affiliation to the club then the club will be run better and truer to the club's values. Investors regularly use English clubs as cash cows, and destroy their identities (Cardiff and Wimbledon being the most high profile examples). But if the fans had control that would never happen. In Germany football clubs are just that, they're clubs, still retaining their local feel, even if they become global powerhouses like Bayern and BvB, unlike in England where they're just businesses
Here in Brazil, Red Bull has recently bought a club called Bragantino, from the city of Bragança Paulista. Bragantino is a very traditional club in Brazilian football and even though they've never been a top club here, they still had their fans in Bragança Paulista and some neighbor cities.
They got promoted to Brasileirão Série A (the first division of Brazil) last season, but Red Bull changed their club badge, the kits and the name from Clube Atlético Bragantino to Red Bull Bragantino. Their fans are really divided about this, some of them are really angry saying they killed the traditions of the club, but some are happy because Red Bull possibilitated them to get promoted to the first division after 22 years.
Now in the season 2020 we're gonna see what's gonna happen
But we also don't have risk of seeing this thing happening with the biggest clubs. Most of them are legally considered Non-profit Associations, so they don't really have an owner or something like that, they have a president selected by the associates via elections

Many fans, especially from outside Germany, seem to think that the Bundesliga only has 1 big club (FC Bayern) when actually there are many other big clubs like Schalke, Dortmund, Bremen, Stuttgart and HSV who could also be challenging Bayern Munich if it wasn't for restrictions. The fans should always have a sizeable share of control of their club but they should also accept that their clubs needs more money from external sources which can help them compete domestically and in Europe

True and I agree. But it would be great if the other big clubs stop feeding the super-club. My first memory of the Bundesliga was when Werder Bremen won the Double in 2004 and I also remember Stuttgart snatching the title from Schalke in 2007 I think. I feel sorry for Schalke fans and it would be great if they keep their young talents and build a team around their academy players so they can finally win the Bundesliga and grow like Dortmund have done this decade.

DW - Kick off! I'm actually a neutral fan in the Bundesliga. As for how can teams give Bayern a challenge and make them sweat for the championship, it would help if Dortmund don't mess up their transfers of players cos they bought a lot of good players last summer but just haven't jelled well together this season. Schalke also need to behave like a big club and convince their talented youngsters that the club is not a feeder club to the rest of Europe like Ajax. Ajax play in a weak league but Schalke don't have the same excuse as the Bundesliga is one of the best leagues.
It's such a shame however to see the demise of a proud club like HSV. Also I hope Dynamo Dresden get promoted to increase the number of Eastern teams

I like the rule, its basically saying we put the club and its fans first. That’s special and it keeps it pure, it also gives the clubs a chance to develop youngsters. There are many things to admire about the rule
Read the book "Soccernomics" if you want to know more. The billionaires buying clubs will most likely, never turn a profit. The clubs are like supercars to be shown off as a status symbol. However, ticket prices would go sky high if not for the 50+1 rule.

Great explanation allround, but I've left without an understanding how the rule makes the league less competitive internally and externally. Obviously externally it's limited due to not using money to capture the top talent, but why has it's implementation left bayern munich at the top for 5 straight years?

I get why people defend the 50+1 rule and I think it is a crude version of how clubs should be run. Football clubs aren't just businesses and their fans aren't just consumers. Having said that Bayern are sitting pretty for their 10th straight title and I think they are the real benefactors of the 50+1. The way they predate on every other team in the league is very reminiscent of Man Utd in the 90s. Any young player at Dortmund or Gladbach knows if they run down their contact Bayern will come knocking. This is extremely damaging to the competition in the league, not only are Bayern fortifying their position at the top, they are undermining their rivals by taking their best players and in many cases there's no transfer fee involved or if there is it's a derisory figure because it's clear the player will just leave on a free if not sold. It's extremely predatory and ultimately it's going to kill the league. I think it's lazy to say you can't hold owners to account without a 50+1 rule.
What was not touched upon is the good that Red Bull’s investment has done for the chronically under developed East German sides. Finally they have given the area a squad that they can be proud of!

Not really, the Brazilean league is arguably the most competitive in terms of most teams with a legit chance to win it at the beggining of the tournament and not a single one of the teams in the first division is privately owned

The Brazilean league is an example that the system in which a team that has no owner can make multiple competitive squads for both national and international level, as they have won the club world cup as recently as 2012 (I believe) and is a league that has multiple potential winners every single year

The rule doesn't exist in the Portuguese league, but it is in the statutes of most Portuguese clubs. However, in Portugal most clubs have an associated Anonymous Sports Society (SAD) which manages assets and has nearly full control over the first team in a club, and that can be taken over by buying shares. What ends up happening is that investors can take control of the first team, ripping the club apart. This has happened with "smaller clubs" (one of which is actually an historic club in Portuguese football) like Belenenses, Cova da Piedade and others that actually went bankrupt over SAD's decisions that ultimately were way over the club's capacity to handle. For a number of years investment societies (such as Abramovich's or Jorge Mendes's) have tried to boost smaller clubs in the Portuguese league in order to get profit, but all that ends up happening is that those clubs are ripped apart and end up fighting for survival. My hometown club (Beira-Mar) has gone all the way down to the lowest tier in regional football due to a succession of poor investment decisions made by people who did not care about the club at all, but managed to acquire majority in the SAD, and basically moved on whenever things weren't going the way they had expected. Right now, there's a team that is performing quite well, having just gone up from the 2nd tier to the 1st tier, Famalicão, and they've had a massive boost, with Atlético Madrid's boss Behind them. Whenever it all ends, the club might just see its end, as it is nearly impossible for these clubs to bounce back from these periods.

It has pros and cons. But football is not a recreation sport anymore. It's a profitable business venture that's why German football has to stop resisting change. And, start building their league to compete with likes of England , Italy and Spain.
If the 50 + 1 rule was in force in the EFL city would be in league 2 and nobody would be able to come close to Manchester United, Arsenal or Liverpool
Well, in my opinion the reason why bayern can secure title after title is because TV money is distributed unequally, unlike in the Premier league, they have millions in advantage which is stacking up to an even bigger advantage over such a long time.

Honestly, the Bundesliga should get rid of the 50+1 rule and go back to what we previously had. It’s only exists for 21 years but Bayern still won more league titles than they did before the 50+1 rule existed.

But the German team also doesn't look too bad... U21 EC 3 (15), 1 (17), 2 (19).
U20 WC won by England in 17 is nice, but this year, both teams weren't even qualified because they were both too bad in the U19 EC last year.....
I don't see Germany doing so much worse in the U-tournaments. I would surely dispute the fact that England "in the last 5 years DOMINATED youth international football".
But it is always a question how valuable those results really are... U21 and U20, okay - but younger players I do not consider very valuable for the grown-ups WCs/ECs, because let's face it, how many u17 players even play in a first team in a highest league? How many U19 players actually make it to the national team? They are indicators for the long run, but a lot can change in that kind of time....

@@thebillbo well. Most FS1 and FS2 Bundesliga games are usually just Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund, or RB Leipzig games with the occasional exception during rivalry games.

It is PL's lucrative TV rights and fair sharing of money among the 20 clubs that makes the PL more competitive than Bundesliga. Not ownership structure. Barcelona and Real Madrid are also fan owned and have no problems buying anyone they want to.
that is because in Spain, the big clubs negotiate their own TV rights- hence Barcelona will make more money on a game than say, Espanyol will. It also doesn't help that Barcelona and Real are multi-sport clubs with serious corporate backing and will never lose money. If Spain followed the PL model of an independent top division that spread outside income fairly (along with parachute payments for recently relegated teams) we'd suddenly see Valencia, Bilbao and Atletico added to the title mix and the likes of Florentino Perez acting less like a wannabe Franco.
