Seeing it rolled down the road with people and cars nearby gives that sense of perspective that is hard to comprehend when watching it take off and land. You look at that massive structure with people walking in front of it, and then realize it flew to space and came back and landed, and then you're hit with the awe all over again
Being an old underground copper miner from Arizona, who used a lot of explosives in the mining process, I believe that the chine damage was due to an internal increase of pressure, that blew the skin outward.
I like that theory. There just seemed to be missing skin, but no crumpled structure underneath, which is more consistent with a blowout than a collision with the hot-staging ring.
The more likely theory would be that the chine had a small gap that was made ever larger by the wind it encountered on the way back. Even a small gap can easily enlarge - and that chine cover is very thin.
I would *love* to know how all of the engineers expected this to go... 😊 Me personally, I expected it'd be SO close, but would ultimately fail in some way. That shot when the booster is driving by on the road and the camera pans up, then back down, reminds me of that shot in cloverfield when they go into the subway. When they look up and the monster screeches at them.
If the hot staging ring had impacted the booster as a few have speculated, the underlying chine frame would show evidence of impact- yet it is remarkably intact.
@@jameshoffman4138 Indeed. Breaking the sound barrier is no joke! After all, it's damaged many a plane back before we understood it. Granted, they had much thinner skins, and it was aluminum at that, not stainless steel! _(eg: WWII planes in a dive which managed to)_
I was wondering how they would realign the booster for a catch and re-mount. I had no idea they could already horizontally adjust the booster! Incredible

For the damage on the side of the chimes, I'm betting is from vented methane from the q.d and it getting inside the chimes and igniting went the vented methane ignited during landing, blowing out the panels parallel to the q.d.
I was literally rocking back and forth watching, as that thing flew back like freaking Mjolnir (MARVEL's Thor1, my guilty pleasure), conversion trail, sonic booms and all. And the way those booms reverberated through the clouds! And, last but not least, those sexy little opening width adjustments made by Mechazilla's arms as the booster was about to land... Ooooh. I've watched streams F9's first landing attempts almost a decade ago, and now I got to see this. Whenever I get depressed, I console myself with thoughts of technological breakthroughs. I'm not picky about industries (though Space is by far my favorite) - just the thought of the marvels that people can create is a potent pick-me-up, I'm sure you'd agree.))))
days later, this whole event seems surreal. It's pretty unusual to see a 20 story office building sized object soft land. Even more unusual to see it being gently caught like some 350 ton ballerina who just diminished her dance in the air. Either way, it's a grand performance
The booster's almost-pure liquid methane burns very cleanly in it's almost-pure liquid oxygen without long-chained byproducts forming, it's pretty much all just H2O and CO2, so it's not sooty. If I recall the facts right, and "soot" that forms is from the hot exhaust parts in contact with our somewhat dirty atmosphere.
First time I have seen most of this. Afraid I was out for the day. I watched the rollback live. Apologies to you all for missing it on Sunday.😥 Might catch some other replays from the team that were there on the day.
When it was on the OLM, did they remove the rest of the fuel via the quick disconnect? There probably wasn’t much, but I guess they would want to purge the tanks and the lines before they put it in the bay…
Awesome footage...great Galactica reference. I'm wondering how they made sure the fueling ports weren't 180' degrees off. Obviously it affects all the connections from the Booster-QD, just wondering if it won't even "sit" on the OLM properly...
You can see the metal panel fly off as the rockets reignite. Looks more like an explosion than being ripped from by contact. Also no substructure damage to the ribs if there had been contact. Love your work.
