    Stage zero is the unsung hero of the catch. I have seen the tower roasted on other launches. Everything needed to be pretty much flawless post launch to enable the booster to come back.

      And roasted metaphorically, by the media and haters. How much did NASA's new SLS tower cost again? And how long ago now was that tower finished? Oh, that's right, its not finished and the cost is $2.7B (that's with a B) and counting. If you ever needed an example of why private enterprise is more efficient (and better) than Government this is it.

    If you can catch the booster and you can bring Starship in for a pinpoint landing, then you can catch Starship if you have a second tower.
    Until you have a second tower, it is a good time to test Starship with landing legs and land Starship on a barge. You might want to have elevated capture ring segments to embrace the ship on landing to avoid having Starship tip over if the barge rolls.

    It's incredible 😲 Still getting over my shock of a successful booster catch on first try.
    My concern is still the TPS. Ship 30 held together so much better during re-entry but unfortunately it still blew up. Why?
    I'm not saying SpaceX won't eventually solve this, but the TPS is still a serious problem. Especially if they want Ships/TPS that requires no refurbishment. Also can't wait to see how they will catch the Starships. If they do it the same as the boosters it's likley to damage the TPS tiles. Meaning tile replacement. Its a few years away but I wonder if Nasa would even allow crew on a Starship that was going to be caught.
    Obviously the HLS versions for moon and Mars will need landing legs, but those don't land on earth. However, how will SpaceX test HLS Starship landing legs without testing on earth? It would make sense at tgat point to do 20km hopes with HLS Starships to verify the landing legs.

  • @torben777
    @torben777 2 години тому

    They may have the positive problem, that they need to change plans for flight 6, because it was planned as another booster landing attempt. The next things they need to work on, like heatshield issues, survivability of booster engine section, catch of the ship, fuel transfer in orbit, etc., may require redesign before they can test it.

    Absolutely amazing how it went, worrying about the fire after catch. And how heated the raptors got from atmosphere, I feel another slow down burn is needed. Maybe as both booster and ship get lighter and raptor 3 with the extra thrust it maybe a simple solution?

    • @qwerty112311
      @qwerty112311 6 годин тому +1

      They’ve got to vent the residual propellants somehow. Is that the way? Not sure. But I doubt a fire of that sort does any meaningful damage. As for the speed coming in… the thermal protection is being upgraded/integrated into the engines in raptor 3. They can also potentially flow an inert cyro through the regen cooling system in the bells.

  • @briangalton7068

    The question regarding the next flight is what SpaceX wants from the next flight. It would be pointless to repeat flight 5 UNLESS they have made some interesting changes to the heat shield and want to test those changes. I think next flight will be late December.

  • @gk...
    @gk... 10 годин тому

    14:50 The damage could have been caused by a collision with the hot staging ring. This can be seen in a long-range video. The defect then became larger due to air pressure and fire.

    Question for our Kerbal experts out there..... Can Super Heavy booster under either of the two scenarios, make a flight from Starbase to Cape Canaveral? Its 1035 miles from Starbase to Cape.
    #1 Booster with starship, boosts starship into orbit and rather then return to Starbase uses that boost back fuel to continue forward to Cape Canaveral landing booster their?
    #2 Booster alone, no starship, boosts from Starbase, and without the weight of a starship can make a landing in Florida?
    If one, either or both are possible, that would be a way to "transport" booster and starship to other launch sites?

    • @oberonpanopticon
      @oberonpanopticon 8 годин тому

      I haven’t played KSP in a while but the first scenario sounds highly dubious and the second one sounds vaguely possible

    • @Simple_experiments

      Скажу сразу - я не эксперт.
      Склонен считать, что SuperHeavy хоть технически вполне способна совершить перелёт между космодромами, но, такой способ доставки будет сопряжён с дополнительными рисками и прочими сложностями. В первую очередь - бюрократическими.
      Вобщем, ближайшие несколько лет водная транспортировка видится самым реальным решением.
      А вот в будущем, да, всё может быть

  • @DennisDaroczy

    With all the propellant that was left after the catch, it looks like they could do an ‘entry burn’, like Falcon-9, which would greatly reduce return velocity, frictional heating and the aerodynamic forces that bent (warped) the nozzles.
    Just Sayin’...

  • @ferenczhucker4561
    @ferenczhucker4561 Годину тому

    Even though the catch was perfect, I’m still in favour of boosters having legs and being less dependent of the tower for a catch.
    Possibly having both options would be incredible ?.
    As power output from the raptors and fuel capacity increase these options might become attainable in the near future.

    All im saying. It’s going to be very very difficult for the starship with this TPS philosophy to be reusable like the booster. The whole point of using steel was to take advantage of its heat properties, but they are finding that if the TPS fails enough all the steel is going to do is bring the ship back in a near unusable state. The only option is going to be the shuttle option. Of having the heat tiles take the thermal load and can never fail like they did on flight 5.

    • @Papershields001
      @Papershields001 3 години тому

      If that’s the case you might as well just build the ship out of aluminum and put some of the mass you saved into a beefier heat shield.
      What I would do tho is the SR71 solution: titanium ship with some spray on ablator before each flight like a deicing fluid. But ya know shoot for the stars b an an
