I'm zone 5, and I have a section of my garden that is pretty much full shade and a bit rocky with medium soil. It's about a 7 x 5-foot area that will be butting up to my native garden, and I'm looking for two ground covers that could compliment each other in this little rocky section. This is in a residential area, not in the woods per se.
I'd be curious to know how much you've had to remove to thin out the patch. 6 plants in 2 years, I'm hoping that they grew a lot more than that and you've been busy cutting them back. I've been thinking about both of those for a 10x10 spot that I have, but I wasn't sure how many plants I'd need for the area if I wanted it to fill in reasonably fast.
My area is a bit larger than it appears on camera. It is about 7X3. The first year the roots were growing and there wasn't much plant growth. Last year it started to really fill in and this year it is a carpet. The golden groundsel really grows robustly and flowers in the spring. Then it recedes to a low green layer while the wild ginger grows and becomes more prominent. The two work great together. I'm hoping they will spread to cover another 2 feet. I haven't had to thin them out yet but it may be necessary in the future. I wanted it to fill in fast so I planted 12 inches apart. I hope this helps.
thank you very much for this! will be adding these to my garden soon.
Thanks for watching and for adding more native ground cover to your garden. Every plant counts!

Two native plants that should grow well in gravelly soil in the shade are wild columbine and wild sedum.

@@sagmorainenativeplantcommunity Thanks for the info. I feel better knowing they'll fill in decently fast.
