  • Hey guys. This is a new one. What do you do when you dont have a line bore machine big enough to handle the job, you think of other ways to accomplish the challenge. Follow along as you see how I jumped this hurdle. Kick back and break out the popcorn or cold drinks. Enjoy. Thanks for the support in advance.

I wanted to thank you for your inspiration. A year ago I was stuck at home with Covid. I discovered your channel along with alistairarc. I decided to change my career, I went to school for welding and I was offered a job even before I graduated. I have now been welding for almost 6 months and I love it. Thanks for sharing your craft, you inspired this 40 year old to change his life.

Old old old school techniques are the best and you are the best at working with metal hands down. With your talent you could have knocked out this job in the field even without a lathe I am sure. You have the stediest hands, of anybody in the business. Thanks for this video and the lesson that comes with it that proves that the man is the technology 100 %.

As a farmer, we make a tremendous amount of repairs on the go just to get the job done. Some get redone the correct way for the future operation of the equipment, some never get done any better and if we are lucky they run for years. We have many examples of the latter working hard for us to this day. I have utilized techniques learned from you on this channel a number of times making on the go fixes and am happy to say most of them panned out positively. Thanks for the videos and your ideas! Like you always tell us - it’s not a how to video, it’s a video of how you did it.
As far as the lathe work goes, you got it done, it fits well enough that it needed to be tapped home with a hammer. There’s not much more that could be asked for except was the customer satisfied?
I’ll bet he was, so it’s a win/win all the way around.

Good job, as usual. Nothing wrong with using a normal lathe tool to do an inside bore. The only thing you have to check is if the bottom of the tool blank will clear the curve of the part. Not much of a problem on large holes, but can be one for smaller holes. You can grind some extra relief on the tool, or sometimes just offset the tool a little above center, or a combination of both.

Next time you might try placing three small pieces of sacrificial brass or aluminum between the steel ring you are machining and the step in each vise jaw (make sure the pieces are the same thickness)... That will enable you to complete the ID cut from one side and not have to worry about lining up the ring again after you turn it around. You might want to look up how to do trepanning cuts. Seems like it could be a useful technique for doing rings like that. Wouldn't take much of an investment in tools either.
Also, what I've found useful is that it's often the thickness of the ring that's more important than the diameters. So, get the thickness right, then slit the ring to buy you some fudge room on the diameter. Not saying it's the fix for all solutions, but it can certainly help if you're "accuracy challenged".
