    Hey, if I only have 8GB of RAM and 4 CPUs, what do you recommend for my VirtualBox System settings for Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +14

      David Chacko If you're on 4 CPU cores, you really can only run 1 VM at a time. Give Windows 2 CPUs and 4 GB of RAM since it's a resource hog. If you try running Xubuntu 20.04, you may be able to get a way with 2GB RAM and 1 CPU core to run it simultaneously

    If anyone is teaching me anything about virtualisation and networking than you are my star. I honestly believe that you are utterly underrated since your approach and teaching capabilities are second to none. I have tried many before without making real progress; whereas you get me going in no time. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.

    Really well done. Good information and good delivery. The links with time stamps are really handy. Your speed is a bit high. If you are going to go at that pace with a click through you might need written instructions somewhere that people can follow. Either way just a touch slower would be easier to follow. I actually installed two Ubuntu VMs last night so I know the process and what you are doing. I did pick up a couple of tips and that is great. Thanks for breaking out the networking options and the prerequisite linux install for the VM tools.

    I guess I'm just dumber than most. I don't have any Linux experience. For 30 years I've only dealt with Microsoft. Some of the things you suggest doing I have no idea of how to do. Believe me, I would really like to understand and learn other things besides Microsoft. I'm very much against MS but it nearly 80 years old I am challenged a bit about new and different things. I've managed to do about 99.9% of all my computer maintenance myself just being self-taught. Thanks for UA-cam!!! Just wish I had started long ago doing things like Linux and or virtualbox. It would come a lot easier for me now if I had learned this younger.

    How my RAM, CPU cores and disk space allocation process would look like, if I choose a 32-bit Windows 10? How does it look in older Windows systems without support like Windows XP? I wanna use a VM for 32-bit programs from the 90s or early 2000s, that I won't force to run on my 64-bit Win 10. I've got 16GB of RAM, Intel Core 7700k (4 cores), SSD disk for my host with 42,5GB of 110GB left and HDD disk with 444GB of 931 left. What is the recommended VM setup for these cases?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +1

      For something like 32-bit XP, 1GB RAM and 1 CPU core will get you going fine. You can bump up to 2GB RAM and 2 CPU cores if you need some extra horsepower. Disk you'll need 4-6 GB for a VM.

      If you want your VM traffic going over VPN and its in NAT mode, the host VPN will protect the VM. If it's in bridged mode, you'll have to double check.

    How would you do updates? Cause if you install a fresh os, say for surfing, and updates come. So you install the updates, make a new copy (fresh install + update 1) and then, ow...you were surfing, so instead of only saving the updates you also saved the cookies etc from when you were browsing, and then it makes your vm slow over time, exactly what you wanted to avoid. Installing the updates every time over and over is also not an option, cause then you not only use unnecessary bandwidth, but in time you're spending more time installing updates then surfing the web, especially on Windows. So again, my question: how do you do updates?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому

      When you want to re-baseline, restore to snapshot, then update.
      Then take a new snapshot. If you prune the old one it'll merge the differences.

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  3 роки тому +1

      The resources allocated to the VM get returned when you close it out. It's just the hypervisor software that's borrowing it from the computer when it's running the VMs.

  • @Freakazoid12345
    @Freakazoid12345 4 роки тому

    You're supposed to be able to move files from your virtual machine to your host by three methods
    1) Copy and paste
    2) Connecting to external usb
    3) Creating a shared folder
    I've tried all three and haven't been successful.
    Then I tried it on VMware and couldn't figure that out either.
    Nice for security, but sucks if you download big files in your VM with a slow internet connection and have to do it all over again.

I have used a NAT connexion, so when I check the IP address in the cmd in the VM, it showed me a different address IP from my real computer so it's good, but the problem is that when I tried to search my IP on the internet by tapping where is my IP in google, it detects the real address IP of my real computer. So I think that I don't have a good isolating, can you help me? Thanks a looot !!

    • @JJFlores197
      @JJFlores197 3 роки тому

      That is normal. Even though your VM has a different private IP address, it will still share the same public ip address as everything on your network since you are going through the same router. You would need to run a VPN of some sort on your vm to get a different public IP.

      Hi Kenz,
      If you have 4GB RAM it will be difficult to run Ubuntu, since it needs a minimum of 2GB to run smoothly. Giving the remaining two to your host OS (Windows) might make it slow.
      Give Xbuntu or Lubuntu a try, you might be able to give it just 1 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores.

    I am building my gaming pc with rhyzen 5(6 cores) and 16gb ram. But also interested in cybersecurity so for VM should I go for rhyzen 7 (8 core) or rhyzen 9 (12 core) with more ram? Can I play high graphic online games on VM? Or offline games too??

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +1

      Afzal imam Some people have had success playing games in a VM but it’s a mixed bag. You’ll have to see if the hypervisor supports GPU passthrough. If it does, you’ll have better luck with an eGPU, since it will need to pass the entire one to the VM.
      VMs tends to do better with more resources. I like giving mine 4-8GB of RAM each, with 4 cores. With more resources it also lets you run multiple VMs as a home lab if you need.

    • @afzal1988
      @afzal1988 4 роки тому

      Let's just say if my CPU has 8 cores and from which I hv given VM 4 cores so when I am not using VM so my pc will work as 4cores only or it can use 4VM cores also?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому

      If the VM is shutdown/suspended, you will have 8 cores
      If the VM is running, you will have 4 cores remaining.

    In Windows 8.1 I can't copy the whole hash from PowerShell. First off all I had to go into settings and manually enlarge the window size to be able to see the whole hash. (I used the command Get-FileHash [fileName] if anyone is interested.) Then I tried copying the hash, but the last 5 or 6 something characters wouldn't copy.
    I tried pasting what I could copy in a .txt file and then copying the rest, but that didn't work either, it just repasted the same thing as before. So I ended up just manually typing the last 5 or 6 characters and then searched the whole hash in the hash list on vb's web page. Why is PowerShell this weird on 8.1? And also, why is paste [mouse right click] instead of [ctrl + v] ?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +1

      The stock Windows command terminals aren't as user-friendly as Linux ones. You can also upload the file to an online service that will calculate different hashes for you. Virustotal will scan and give you the SHA256 hash, for examples.

    I have a question.
    Does virtualbox take my PC's resources permanently or
    does my PC share its resources only when virtualbox is running?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +1

      PC shares its resources when it's running. VMs will take up hard disk space when not running.

      Yes there are smartphone emulators you can use. I recommend GenyMotion (Android), which requires Virtualbox.

    Fun Question: Is it possible to run a virtual machine on Windows 95 that is running Windows 10? Like, a virtual machine on an old PC that's running Windows 95, and the virtual machine on the Windows 95 PC is running Windows 10.
    Obviously this has literally no practical use (that I can think of) but it kind-of just popped into my head lol

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +1

      If you're running on really old hardware chances are that the CPU doesn't support hardware virtualization. Virtualbox and VMware is also unlikely to run on Windows 95.

    Can the snapshot be recovered after deleting. by any means ?

    • @Cyberspatial
      @Cyberspatial  4 роки тому +1

      Theoretically files on disk can be recovered if they weren't overwritten. In practice, this is very unfeasible because VM's are likely going to overwrite things. Even if you use advanced disk forensics, it's not guaranteed the snapshot will be in a consistent state.
      If you delete the snapshot, it is difficult to recover unless you have backups of the VM.
      If you are referring to reverting to a snapshot, the current state will be lost when you revert.
