years ago I used to play these on classical guitar they were called, turn's or ornamentations. However in baroque music like a Bach lute suite you did this by a quick hammer and pull using the third and fourth left hand fingers. What interests me is how sliding quickly instead sounds so different from hammers and pulls.
Such a subtle thing but has the potential to add nice characteristic to a line. Awesome lesson as usual, thanks a bunch.

I think Steve Howe popularized this in "All Good People" a quick way to use minor bluesy sounds but in an uplifting way.
He was the first I’d seen do this trick back in my teens 👍

Whenever I copy Mateus (try my best), I always do a quick little half step bend up and back down. Did not know it was a slide.
A combination of both sounds great! Bend first, then quick slide 🙌

a glissando is a different effect. glissando is more of a super slippery vibrato thing.....this is more of a phrasing thing...for me..it was an out growth of my double stop technique...i was thinking...how can i make this even more expressive. It' s definitly one those things that separates the really good or great players from the average ham fisted guy you run in every guitar shop. it sounds subtle and sophisticated. if you add it as a tool in your box to an already bendy, wiggly, pushy pully vibrato-y style....its just super expressive.
I heard that technique ones on Music is Win's video. Its called the "flick"

Angus Young uses these slides a lot. Also MI instructor Barrett Tagliarino taught this technique.
You have great lessons on Asato. I think this quick slide is also a signature sound of Derek Trucks, Asato said that he is a fan of Derek.

Darryl I would like to know about your tone in this video. You have quite a lot of top end, but it doesn't sound brittle. What is happening with the EQ section? Can I hear some compression too?
I used BIAS FX for this. I’m no tone wizard, in fact I don’t really have much clue what I’m talking about, but I’m glad you like the tone 👍 There’s a little EQ boost around 1k, and a compressor at the start of the chain. What really drives it is the boost, but I’ve still got the bass up and treble down on there. Feel free to shoot me a message on Instagram if you want me to send you some pics or something 🙂

How did you make this ibanez sounds so mateus? Haha. I thought the tones of ibanez are somewhat a little different from strats.

Hi Darryl how are you? friend, I would like you to give me some advice, since I see that you are someone who knows a lot. I would like to know what you think is better to buy, an ibanez s1070? or ... an ibanez rg350dxz + an middle range squier stratocaster or a low range fender stratocaster. Since the ibanez s1070 is the same value as the other two together. Thanks for your time! incredible videos.
Honestly, I’m not very knowledgable with gear. But, I do prefer the feel and shape of the RG’s, so I’d choose that option if it were me 👍🙂

Isnt that just a really fast and difficult legato ? Do you have any other exercises to practice this or would you say one just has to do it often enough to get it ?
For the most part, no. You can certainly combine it with legato as I did in one of the final examples. The technique itself can't really be broken down into an exercise since it kind of is an exercise in itself. Take pentatonic notes to begin and use your third finger to drill the technique. The best and most useful note to try it on in my opinion is that 11th Fret on the G as I showed in the video, since this makes for a good slide into your "blues note" which is something John Mayer would often do

Ahh I understand! Great question! And a very difficult and broud one to answer. Technique is certainly one aspect, which I try to cover a lot of on my UA-cam channel. But Theory is another thing that you need to understand. I recently created an awesome theory course on my website that you might want to check out for some guidance: courses.darrylsyms.com . hey darryl ur boi Josh again i wanna ask...could u do another vid on mateus asato using diff alt tunings..i c he uses alt tuning a lot as well and he uses a lot of harmonics.....slides...pull o0ffs...legato in general...basically wht he does on alt tunings is amazing....if u wanna know wht i mean see his song done like in 2012 called "Another Farewell"
oh yea one more thing if u can...go over the tunings he uses XD hope i didnt ask for a lot xp
Hey Josh. I wasn't aware that he uses altered tunings? He often plays in Eb but besides that, maybe drop D once in a while, or standard? Another Farewell is in DADGAD I believe, but again that seems to be a one off :) Besides tunings though, there's certainly a lot of phrasing applications and techniques that everyone can learn from Mateus!

Not glissando at all, sorry. As the glissando is just a slide between two notes. It's not a Trill either, as the trill is several quick alternations between two adjacent notes. The word you are looking for is Mordent : "a single rapid alternation with the note above or below". It's can also be a "broderie" (french word, don't know the english version, sorry).

@@DarrylSyms lmao, the technique is common for slide players, slide guitar copys voices specificly. Then you have mandolin players like alle akbar khan,who can sound like they're playing slide but he is using his fingers. Point is this, that technique has been around along time. It the phrasing he uses it with that make it his sound.
