This is so cool to see, i always wondered how certain armour pieces are made and now seeing how you create the gambeson. This makes Forge of Svan one of the most transparent and sympathic armour makers i can think of :D

This is not how gambeson was made historically, but this is how they would have made them if they could. That batting has similar resistance to cutting as several layers of linen or cotton, and as for the sewing machine it's just plain faster. So it is not historical per se, but at the same time it is not in any way a perversion of history or an inferior product.

Recently ordered some arming garments from this company, this video only got me more excited to see how they turn out.

Traditionally, it was actually 3 sheets of cloth, sheep's wool, and then 3 more sheets of cloth sandwiched together. Then it was sewn together where it became and compacted. The hand sewing of Gambeson's was a mans job and it was the traditional wear of military peasants, if you were rich you could also get a chain mail shirt to go over it.

What a brilliant video! Mind me asking what sort of material do you use for the edgings?

Do you make all your gambesons with a cotton batting or do you also use polyester?

What are you using for the pattern cut outs? Is that just cardboard sheeting of some kind

gambeson is made with a single layer of natural sheet wadding. The thickness is approx. 0.5 cm

Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world?
I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect)
Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes,
Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail.
Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson.
I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used.
    Correct me if I’m wrong.

How many meters of fabric does it take to make 1 gambeson?

Ive been trying to find the cotton batting used in this video, but cant find anything even remotely similar. Does anyone know what this kind of batting is called?

I bought bamboo batting from Winline. It’s reasonably priced and a bit better than cotton.
