I had to pause the video at #1 and say that this 🇨🇦ian high school sewing teacher has enjoyed the incredibly positive and empowering experience that my students are having in my classroom when they sew their own face masks. They are so proud and they seem blown away that they can make something that is so purposeful and so cool looking. They love picking out their fabric and seeing the face mask take shape as they follow the steps to make it. Best of all they love walking out of the classroom proudly wearing their new face mask as they head to the bus loop to catch their school bus home.

FYI: For cleaning ears, you can also use a bamboo skewer. Just take a cotton ball and twirl it on until you get the amount you want. Very little is actually needed. You can remove the cotton and reuse the skewer. Another option is a single square of toilet paper. Twist it until it's the size you want. Not zero waste but definitely a better option from standard plastic swabs. Saves $ too!
I actually bought a period cup about 10 years ago. I never got to try it. I went into menopause. D'OH!
For deodorant I use baking soda. It's actually better than regular deodorant.(I have an allergy to aluminum in care products.) It goes on dry and you don't even see it. However, it's not anti-perspirant.
Shampoo bars are ok. But I find I need to do a baking soda wash every other week, to get residue off hair. For conditioner I use organic apple cider vinegar. I wish I discovered it years ago. No more clumps of hair coming out after shower. I will NEVERR use standard shampoo or conditioner again.
With bamboo toothbrushes I've noticed some can have a long tip that can hinder getting at the back teeth. If that happens, use a piece of sandpaper and whittle it down until it works for you. Make sure to smooth it out with a finer grade paper.
I use a bidet bottle too. But mine isn't electric. It's just a squeezable bottle with a "L" shape tube. It was $6 on Amazon 5 years ago.

About the period cramps: Have you seen a doctor about your extreme cramps to make sure nothing is wrong with your reproductove system, or to make sure you dont have endometriosis? Cramps are normal but cramps so bad you cant walk can be symptoms of something being wrong.

@@olibob8 Extremely painful cramps or extreme period pain are never normal and there is always a reason for that. In my case, I can't get out of the bed the day I get my period and I feel like my whole body is just falling apart, but my doctors always told me "it is what it is/that's perfectly normal" and to just take painkillers, and then I found out I have ovarian fibroma. Change your doctor.

    • @PheOfTheFae
      @PheOfTheFae 3 роки тому +7

I was going to comment about this, too. Also with a side note: I participated in a study about endometriosis and told them this part, and they said that they had heard other such comments (tho that wasn't what they were studying), so it might not just be me. I got diagnosed with a bunch of food allergies a few years back, and when I started eating the allergy-safe diet (previously I had been vegan, cannot be anymore due to how restrictive the allergy diet is), my endo pain ratcheted WAY down. Way, way, way down. My theory is that since soy was one of my allergens and it can effect your hormones to boot, maybe that was the culprit, since I ate a fair amount since soy was my favored dairy replacement before. But I don't know for sure. But either way, it's WILD what diet can effect!

Fire works: Consider video game alternatives, there’s online articles about the best video game Fire work displays. Also if you have VR maybe paint or art some digital fire works. Light shows are a great alternative. If you simply must have fire works go to a large show, then the fireworks are shared and the number is reduced and shared with a crowd.

I agree with the fireworks thing, over the new years holiday the amount of random fireworks I heard was ridiculous. And with the ones that were let off in London I was perfectly happy to sit and watch them on TV over standing out in the cold watching some very very sad one bang ones going off. It's not zero waste to attend commercial ones, but it's less waste and I would hope councils were more responsible in clearing up after them.

When our kids were growing up, our entire neighborhood would do fireworks on July 4th and New Year’s. We would pace our kids on doing small fireworks in the early evening, and then sit outside and watch others that bought the big stuff. It wasn’t perfect low waste but it was sooo much less resources and money than our neighbors spent. Now we live in the woods, so no fireworks, but our grown children come over for games and an evening of cooking hotdogs and marshmallows around the fire pit. We never miss the fireworks.

@@candicebrown1781 So my eyeshadow palette was from an etsy shop called LittleStuff4u(i am not sure if they have sustainable business practices but their stuff is pretty good), and the foundation is from RawbeautyLLC. I would also recommend checking out DabHerbmakeup on etsy as well :)

So inspiring for starting the New Year, especially since one of my resolutions is to go zero waste! I’m already doing most of these things so maybe I’m further along than I thought. Also, thanks for sharing the dental tabs-I’ve been looking for a zero waste option with flouride.

I loved your videos :) I never knew about the portable bidet. We love our stationary one and got one for the second bathroom. Now the whole family loves them and has been a great swap when you live with a lot of people. Also this year I switched to Blueland laundry soap and it is been great and an amazing game changer. It cleans well and helps us not over use soap.

I bought this this year and it legit was the best purchase of the year I have multiple boxes of Cora pads. That I have had to touch in months! It is so nice! Also I'm less worried about what pants I wear which is great.
I also love the zero waste dental floss. I'm trying to convince my dentist to offer the refills. Though I have gotten them to stop giving me the little ones they usual include.

Hi Gittemary! Thank you for the videos, your passion really comes across and is addictive! I have adopted many of your recommendations (glass jars, cotton bags, safety razor etc etc.) but even so, I feel like I'm creating too much plastic waste and feel bad about it... I'm a vegan and when I buy products like tofu or hummous it always comes in plastic. For things like pasta there are no zero waste shops in my area so even that I have to buy from supermarket (in plastic). There's a market closeby but it closes early (I work a 9to6 job) so I have no chance of buying local produce. Because I work so much I also dont have time to make my own produce (like hummous) You get the idea, society makes it difficult for me to avoid plastic completely and I feel helpless when I have to carry a huge bag of plastic trash to the recycling bin, once a week, knowing most of it wont be recycled and not knowing where that trash will end up.

I've pre-ordered a DuraPik. it's a reusable, made from recycled stainless steel dental pic (similar in shape to the disposable ones) and you just replace the floss portion. it comes with a biodegradable dental floss as well.

I looooove LastSwab so much! Please buy from this brand if you can, rather than the knock-offs, because they're producing responsibly (albeit in China) and they're made of compostable plant-based "plastic".
I would also recommend Modibodi as an alternative to Thinx, especially if you're in Australia or New Zealand. They have even more heavy duty underwear than Thinx that will absorb many tampons worth without getting slightly wet, so it's fantastic if you are really, really heavy or have a bleeding disorder.

I’ve been using Thinx for years and I love them. They’re a bit of an upfront cost, but if you time your laundry right, they really can save money, too. Sadly the menstrual cup doesn’t work for me but Thinx has been a great alternative!
